Okay so I finally get to finish this one teehee.

If you like:

  • Cases that connected to each other like a circle;
  • Mystery-solving laced with;
  • tragic romance (not between main couple) ;
  • Humorous writing style that might help your heart beat normally after an intense scene,
Then I think it's for you. :D

I wish the author writes an extra about MC's master's past. The knife will be a quite tasty one... /ey

Granted, I'm only at chapter 37, but character development and plot progression can't negate the flaws that are already there, personally I won't waste more time on it considering that it seems to deteriorate further.

Still, take my review as a closeup of these aspects, and if they don't bother you, then don't feel discouraged from reading the novel.

MC is straight, the author emphasises this constantly, and he is an adult, yet he behaves like a 13 years old that just discovered women – he's crushing on every single female in... more>> his age range from the moment he sees her for the first time.

On the other hand, it takes only around 20 chapters before he "goes weak" when ML (forces) intimacy on him, he doesn't object, doesn't really try to stop him, at most he's internally lamenting.

The most annoying part is, that he seriously thinks ML sees him as his pet and has some kind of warped s*xual interest in that, instead of coming to the only logical conclusion – ML is gay.

MC's logic is convoluted beyond what's believable, this is such a common thing in BL, to make the MC extremely s*upid in this regard, only to prolong the realisation that ML is interested in him, but this time it's especially ridiculous.

I normally don't care much about questionable characterisations, but up until chapter 37, not a single woman/girl was a decent person, they are either downright evil, or obtrusive, borderline obsessive Yanderes.

This is even sadder when you know that there are only three female characters up until that point, and all three are horrible, they only exist to push ML and MC together, and two of those are basically carbon copies of each other – interchange the names and you wouldn't be able to tell them apart.

Characterisation as a whole is disappointing, MC's setting as a fox demon is wasted, it's mentioned again and again how naturally alluring and seductive he is, yet no one actually reacts to him accordingly and he himself makes zero use of it either.

Why is it mentioned so often when this point doesn't seem to exist the rest of the time?

ML isn't any better, everything outstanding about him is explained with "he's the protagonist" and that's it, in addition, it takes only a few chapters for him to go from not trusting MC to wanting to jump him, with no real transition or reason why.

Worldbuilding is very wonky as well, which isn't a big surprise if you read some of the author's notes, such as that she will inform the readers should she decide to change the rules of her own story... in the middle of the story.

Consistency is just all over the place.

The original would have needed to cultivate for 1000 years before he could turn into a human, cultivators rarely live longer than 100 years, so he couldn't meet any of the other characters.

MC did it prematurely, but the system still showed him the original timeline, which included an incidence with one of the characters... that the original wouldn't have met because they all died at least 900 years before he shapeshifted.

According to the author, cultivators don't have superhuman abilities, they aren't much different from mortals, rely on physical strength to fight, travel, etc.

ML proceeds to jump over high walls and cross long distances at breakneck speed, all while carrying an adult man, without getting exhausted or at least sweaty.

The comedy reminds me a lot of "comedy" Anime targeted at 13 to 16 years old teens, with its trademark over-the-top antics that aren't funny the first time and even less the hundredth time.

I have to point out that the author herself seems to have a furry kink... a gay-furry kink. It's either a con or pro for you, I just felt the need to mention it.

Maybe I expected too much, but the novel reads like a half-baked fanfiction on Wattpad, with poorly crafted, stereotypical characters, the typical BL downfalls from straight-to-gay over to 'women are bad', and really everything in between.

I do want to mention that the criminal cases are fairly decent, I truly think the author has talent for this genre and that it's a shame she's wasting it on BL - which she's clearly not good at.

If she ever writes a crime novel, I'd gladly try it out, but this one here is obviously not for me. <<less

I dropped this novel because I just couldn't stand it.

The MC is really.. S*upid. I guess the author was trying to make it a s*upidly funny type of character but it just turned annoying. He's supposed to be a fox demon. Author keeps on saying he has a seductive face but I had yet to see this seductive face doing it's work. It's like a worthless detail that the author keep on mentioning that they don't even use.

Some say MC is cute maybe because he's childish but I don't like... more>> this part of him. In the first chapter, the author build MC an image of a tough guy that won't let himself be wronged and then by the next moment it's all broken down and turns to dust.

I couldn't understand the ml's character at all. At first, he doesn't trust MC then after one moment he's already all for MC. Also he kissed MC and sends all this hints for MC yet MC just ignores it like what? Does the MC not care if he's being mol*sted???? Didn't he beat up a costumer for touching his thighs and pinching his butt??????

Characters don't have personality or rather they are inconsistent. Some are just stereotypical cold and black-bellied characters. They don't have purpose and if they have a purpose, it's not enough for their actions to be justified. Other than if they were a part of a mystery case, most characters serve no purpose other than to drive MC and ML together.

Some details are unnecessary. The romance just doesn't work.

It's supposed to be comedic and funny but the joke doesn't make me laugh or even smile. I guess this kind of humor just doesn't fit me. <<less

if you like the idiot child MC/ big bad wolf daddy ML dynamic you might like this, depending on how picky you are about other things. As for my other complaints, there are two other reviews that lay everything out very clearly and in detail, so I don't feel that there's a need to repeat whats already been said.

I'll just add that I can definitely see why this is ranked so low on jjwxc (82, 700+). The characterization inconsistencies aside, there are some basic problems with the writing itself; things... more>> like world building, pacing, story arc, plot progression, etc.. The only thing I thought was halfway decent were the crime cases.

Great story, well written/ translated, funny, and our MC is just adorable! He is straight (for now) but as a cannon fodder the female character's he likes all dislike him, this just pushes him towards the ML looking for comfort.

I also enjoy the detective/ CSI aspect of the novel, where the ML and MC have to solve mysteries together. This has everything I am looking for and I look forward to reading more!

I just can’t help myself. I need to write a review the day I finished this book. To start off, I read EVERYTHING that Infinite translates. There is something about the books she picks. I don’t know if we’re soul siblings or what... but I LOVE EVERYTHING Infinite translated. It hits me. Kinda sweet kinda sour. So great job Infinite. I can’t wait to read what you have coming next.

Many have said they do not like the MC or the ML and I almost didn’t read this story because of... more>> that. There are some key things you need to know before you choose to start.

1. This is not a fluffy story – yeah, there is fluff but it ripped me up in a few places and there were trigger warnings scattered all throughout this novel.

2. Every character in this book is very very flawed..... to the point you want to smack them. But I actually think these flaws make the story more interesting.

I will try my very best to avoid spoilers. This is the story of Zhou ZiRou who is transmigrated after being killed many times during a video game. He ends up in a martial arts story with a hero Lu LiXiao the ML. Zhou ZiRou is transmigrated as a fox demon. He and the ML pair up to solve crimes and develop a relationship.

The MC is bitter about having to do all the tasks the “system” gives him, and they are the stereotypical tasks and rewards like spiritual pets, approval value, and shape-shifting. What makes this novel outside the norm is a well woven mystery with lots of little sub-plots that contribute to one big whole. The mysteries include many interesting side characters, almost none of which are really bad or really good..... except the two dudes in the last mystery. They were the only two in the story that seemed to be written with no redeeming qualities nor relationships.

While the story does have some holes, especially since it is a mystery, it still wrapped up pretty nicely. The extras haven’t been translated yet. According to the TL they are the back stories of the marionette lady and Bro # 2 and #3 from the sect. Since we saw what happened to those folks before the story ended, I can kinda see why Infinite wasn’t excited about translating it.

Gosh thank you translator for translating this wonderful story. The translation are fantastic and I love that the details, explanation and reminders notes of each characters (which help alot when try to remember who is who)

(And pls, I hope that translator can continue translating the 2 extra🙏🙏)

For me, I enjoyed the story very very much. There’s alot of mystery and intriguing plots here. The romance is good the MC is funny and all the side characters have their own unique twist. But I feel there’s still... more>> some unanswered questions. Maybe that’s in the extras ? I laughed and cried abit through the whole story. So recommended this. Thank you. <<less

For now, I'll rate it 5. The story seems very promising with more focus on the mystery and has just sprinkles of BL with it. The MC and ML both seem quite distinct for now, but I don't know if it'll continue to be the same in the future. The translation is very good. It was a bit rough in the firat few chapters but became smoother in the current ones.

The translation is very good. I like it it's very smooth so one star for that.

Other than that this story plot is simple despite being a detective type novel. There are many opportunities author could use to make interesting plots, great characters setup that could make a well rounded characters and foreshadowings that can make a great pay off. Instead it was all for nothing.

Let's start this broadly. The mysteries are compelling but the way it was written was not by the 'show don't tell' technique, instead it was elaborated... more>> detective conan style where it's the casts that said it out loud instead of the readers figuring it out. Granted that I did not try my hardest to figure it out, probably bc I was bored. The way the mysteries are setup are also weird. Sometimes stuff came out of left field with zero clues that it threw me off.

About the protagonist, I do not dislike him, as he was only a fictional character that was our eyes into the world, so that's why I'm not that mad that he's kinda dumb. He was not made to be the one with the brain as the author intended. He was emotional, unstable mood that causes problems from time to time. Author doesn't give him much agency within the story, he literally got the MC thrown left and right and got him kidnapped several times like a damn damsel in distress.

The ML on the other hand, the author wrote him as this cool, calm headed guy that falls for MC within the first arc which also came out of nowhere like ??? Bro you only met him for like what, three days ????? And as a reminder the ML on in his late 20s or early 30s abd the author wrote him like he's an emotionally unstable teenager that got jealous his boyfriend has a friend. Not to mention consent issues. Not touching that.

Alright now for things I personally feel let down is where are you using the mc's fox demon heritage?? Author you mentioned it more times than I can count but you didn't even do it a shred of justice. Where is MC using his fox demon charm?? Whre is MC going monster fox berserk when ML got hurt??? It was all for nothing????? I waited literally until the end thinking 'there must be more it can't be' Yes it can. It ended on high note but no down notes like what am I supposed to do rn. Also MCs shifu definitely has it down bad for sqjy. I just know it.

What an amazing story and thoughtfully translated.

I loved the mini - mysteries that built up into a big mystery that made you realize the subtleties of black and white. I loved the couples in this story and feel that they each had their unique and compelling personalities. Every character felt so well fleshed out.

My only criticism is that even though the author tried desperately to give the MC growth, in the end, he was just a weakling that depends on the ml, his system, and luck to survive. At the... more>> end of the day, it's hard to decipher why the ML loves him. However, their relationship is still sweet and filled with doting (and a pinch of dogs-blooded drama right where it's needed). All the other objections that I see in the reviews (straight person being forced, straight person not showing interest early enough, stereotyping women as disgusting) I think are overblown. You're thinking too much, the author is writing in a comedic style and exaggerating the mc's thoughts and actions. Also, there will be some pretty impressive women towards the end. I really hope the translator finds the time to translate the two extras - they sound like they help add some resolution to the story's side characters. <<less

Holy cow.

Characterisation and growth are very important in a story. Let just be clear about that.

At chapter 19, MC did not give me any defining traits that will denote that he's MC and not an actual cannon fodder.

The point of cannon fodder counterattacks is that these side characters develope into main characters and take control of their own narrative literally. So to see a supposed MC act powerless and with no method but to literally toss this dude's salad everytime his brows so much as furrow for 19 chaps out... more>> of 115 or so in is annoying. <<less

Pretty interesting..

I started reading quite a while ago, and read about 70 chapters and ending up dropping it, 'cause felt quite bored in middle. And thank god I read it again. An amazing read.

The romance was pretty rushed and feelings of MC and ML seemed bit shallow to me.

The plots were nice and quite puzzling at first but later it went on a good pace.

The ending seemed rushed. I wanted to read extras about MC and the ml. Anyway overall liked it.

Thanku translator for amazing work as well as author.

Enjoyable read...I Hate s*upid ass MCs who stays s*upid till the end but great plot and well developed side characters are my weakness, So...
Plot is good... Tho some little holes here and there but still good enough...I wish cheap shifu had more screen time lol, he's hilarious... It'd have been better if there were more... Ending wasn't rushed but kinda lacked closure...I wished for a more detailed ending but it's not bad...
And Siqing Jiangye, such a complex character... Don't get me wrong, he's bad and deserves punishment... but his crimes were just mentioned, we didn't get to see him doing those bad things so I don't hate him...I wish we had more on him and what happened to him later...
I really wanted to see a more happy ending for Zi Jin, I really liked his characters although he had little screen time... That person didn't deserve Zi Jin's love- that Bai guy, I really despise him... He reminded me of Murong Yu from Cold Sands, saying all that you're different and special to me but not having any actual power, guts or will to do anything, can't let go of ambition or fake pride, pei useless... Tho Zi Jin broke it off (very good decision) and seemed relaxed but I wished to see more happier version of him... No, a lover isn't necessary just free and happy later on his life... There isn't an extra about him tho *sighs*...
But I really wish translator sama will translate the extras soon...

Eh, it's not bad. The story's been entertaining so far. The MC jumps leaps in his logic but it's funny when he does so, the ML's really cool and capable, the side characters are nice too but I haven't gotten too far in the story to make a sound judgement about their characterization.

The ML has his moments of possessiveness but I'm just taking it as a funny addition for his character, he's pretty awesome despite his black-bellyness.

Plus, since the beginning, he's already shown hints of being *bends hands a few times* bent, you know?

I personally don't think the story's supposed to be taken at face value too much, you can read it mindlessly. Their investigations are quite easy to follow, the crimes and mysteries are interesting enough to make me proceed to the next chapter- overall, it's not that bad. For casual readers. It's said to the MC is straight but I don't see any of his part that is straight. The only thing I got from this is emotional damage from side charater and I don't think MC beat the customer bc he was mol*st I think bc that customer is ugly that he beat him. As u can see he don't do a f*ck being kiss by ML actually he did f*ck the ML tho. There are loopholes and things that just doesn't quite make sense but over all I really enjoy it. MC is a small fry with big ego. Not sure how the author and translator does it but I find myself unable to hate him.

What happen to Mister Hen and Leng Mo? Did they ever get together? How does Mister Hen, who should only be knowledgeable about human computer programing, manage to influence the system as he isn't a spirit to begin with? He is a human who also transmigrate with MC and somehow also is a mission task for MC; so, doesn't that mean Mister Hen transmigrating is intentional by the system?

ML's father and SQ sounds like ill fate lovers. They're like a pair that have feelings for each other, but doesn't confess their feelings (it sounds like they haven't) and in turn their fate together become ill separating them forever. Like a slap and kiss couple who doesn't learn to compromise until one is gone. I kinda feel sad for them. I think SQ isn't all that bad while ML's father is too burden by his sense of responsibility. IDK why SQ is so focus on resurrecting ML's father even after he lost his eyes. If me, I might as well willingly die and hope we have the next life together. Perhaps, SQ did just that because he uses his last strength to send the group out. Eventually, he'll succumb to his injury and/or the force of the underworld realm. I think I have a thing for ill fate lover. Oh my heart - it's bleeding again. Aiyo.

How does the ghost in the mirror knows that MC is summon to their world? The ghost claims to not have killed anymore, but the members of Bloodmoon palace says the ghost has done some evil things. This character is the most confusing one.

This was a nice story, with an interesting mystery plot, but it's not to be taken seriously. For me its one of these novels to read to pass time, not to save and reread again.

It does have character flaws that others have already mentioned, but on the other hand, for once I wasn't too bothered by them.

I did skip paragraphs at some points as I felt the author dragged the story more than they should and I think at some point the author backtracked on some points they felt the need to explain.

My only question at the end of the story remains
