When Shen Huai returned victorious from the great war, the Emperor, inspired by the emperors in books, intended to reclaim military power through a cup of wine.

However, unlike those tales, what he handed Shen Huai was not wine but my corpse, shrouded in white cloth.

My younger sister, the current Empress, looked down at him from her lofty position.

“Prince Rui, I heard that you and your wife were childhood sweethearts, a deeply loving couple. What a pity that your wife, so ill-fated, passed away during her visit to the palace to see me. Now, His Majesty and I have decided to bestow upon you ten beauties and a thousand taels of gold to console you in your grief over her loss. How does that sound?”

Everyone waited for him to tremble with fear and gratefully accept the grace.

But they did not know that Shen Huai had never been a loyal minister or a virtuous general from the beginning. Everything he did was for me.

Yet, what they made him see upon his return was my lifeless body.

Ah, what a wonderful short story. It had funny parts, it had loving parts, it had anger inducing parts — they were all good. I especially loved the MCs’ interactions as youths, young adults, and as married couples. Although it’s a tragedy, I guess since the writer had it set up from the very beginning, it wasn’t hard to accept the FL’s early death, and it was really more the aftermath and what the ML would do then. Highly recommended reading!

This short story focused on the loyal love of the leads despite tragic separation. Shen Huai (ML) 's devoted actions to his wife (the FL, Lu Cai Wei) even after she died. Even the reason of being good leader still due to FL to have comfortable on afterlife. Meanwhile, FL (as soul) refused to reincarnate immediately just to watch over ML for years.

Meanwhile, disliked the idiotic couple, Emperor (ML's cousin) & Empress (FL's sister). Emperor lack comprehension & easily manipulated by Empress. His jealousy to ML was petty. This couple... more>> only got role to cause trouble and their punishment was satisfying. <<less

I normally dislike tragedies and definitely wouldn’t rate them this high. However, despite this story being a really short novel, it tightly grasped the reader. The author did a fantastic job with story pacing, character portrayal and used all plot devices brilliantly. It was heartbreaking, infuriating and occasionally childishly endearing. It was short enough that the angst didn’t kill me. It was poignant enough to make me love it despite my aversion to non-happily ever afters.

The thing I will remember the most in this novel is the scene where he see her deceased body.

Like most other Chinese novel male lead, I expect anger, maybe even calm and coldness calculating for a revenge plan. But what I saw was the reaction that always should have been the first and most important one, sadness.

He weep, he fainted, he drink and mourn. Only after the s*upid couple deliberately insult his wife did he pour his anger on them.

This story is a tragedy from the start, and in a... more>> short few chapter make me sympathy with the main character couple. They not even getting a few months of happiness together is heart-breaking. Yet the overall story is not too angsty, even endearing sometime. <<less
