But Shixiong Doesn’t Want To Be A Villain!

Bai Fanlu transmigrated into an immortal cultivation novel as a villainous demon lord.

In the original novel, the demon lord was originally in the ranks of the immortal class and had a promising future. Unfortunately, he fell in love with the male lead, became a villain for his sake, and ended up with his soul disintegrated.

Bai Fanlu objected to this idiotic plot. The reason for the demon lord to become a villain was not the least justified. He was obviously a decent gentleman! The most important reason, of course, is that the demon lord and him share the same name.

System: [Giving you a chance to prove yourself.] Bai Fanlu: [?] System: [Persevere and do not become a villain to the end, and you can return home when the male lead is done with saving the world.] Bai Fanlu: […What if I become a villain?] System: [Then of course you will end up as cannon fodder.]

Bai Fanlu has a plan. In order to not become a villain, he has to adhere to three principles:

Do not have any physical contact with the main lead.

Do not have any grudge entanglement with the main lead.

Do not have any emotional interaction with the main lead.

However, nothing went as planned…

1. The first day Bai Fanlu escaped from the mountain, he was carried back to the Sect by the main lead in full view of everyone.

All the female disciples: “Sect Leader is so considerate to Shixiong.”

Bai Fanlu: “…”

2. When Bai Fanlu was about to go out of control with his cultivation, the male lead risked his life to unblock his meridians to keep him from harm.

All the male disciples: “Sect Leader was willing to sacrifice his life to save another, such a righteous man and deserving of our admiration.”

Bai Fanlu: “…”

3. The cliff below was an endless abyss, and according to the original plot, he will be pushed down into the 10,000-feet deep demon pit.

Bai Fanlu thought to himself, ‘Am I doomed to become a villain?’

As he was getting desperate, a figure descended from the sky, throwing out a long, colourful damask to him, snatching him out of the red lotus fire and carrying him up into the sky.

Under the divine tree, above the sea of clouds and mountains, the young man forcibly trapped him, with a darkness swirling in his eyes he said, “Shixiong…are you trying to leave me? I will not allow it.”

Bai Fanlu: “…”

Bai Fanlu: “So, who exactly is becoming the villain in the end?”

I rate this 2.5. I MTLed the novel, but I read both English and Chinese so my review comes from comprehending the original language.

A better synopsis (The current one is misleading)

MC transmigrates into a novel world with a cannon fodder fate, destined to fall for the protagonist and suffer. Determined to prevent his own tragic fate, he tries to change his destiny and in doing so encounters people and events that are all linked together in a mystery that slowly unravels as he continues to seek a path to... more>> return to his original world.

Warning about the novel and why I rated it so low (Spoilers)

If you didn't check closely, those tags are no joke. I am not a fan of amnesia and boy does this author love amnesia. It's like everyone gets a serving of it. This persists almost til the end of the novel and also happens many times. If you don't like amnesia as a plot point, you definitely will not like this novel. I stuck to the end to see if the author would have a way to salvage the story but was severely disappointed.

Spoiler

Every story arc all the way to chapter 90 contains amnesia as a theme and mostly centred around the MC who really gets a sh*t deal from the author and is constantly in a mental state of not remembering key info and being lied to by everyone. Almost every story arc MC's memory is tampered with resulting in the being cards always stacked against him. It's hard to get to know his character because he's constantly deprived of memory and also different chunks of it each time. It gimps character development and makes it hard for me to really understand him as a character when even he at times does not know himself. Also everyone lies to the MC. And the amnesia makes the lies work. Basically the author flung the MC from plot to plot without a clear mind constantly being deceived and disoriented that I get angry for the MC. The MC is a pawn to the novel, to the system, to his fate and to the ultimate reason he transmigrated to begin with. At no point did it feel like the MC ever had a say in what to do. He was lead by the nose from plot to plot.

[collapse]

About the MC

MC is a cautious character that aims to return to his original world and all his actions are to achieve that goal. Because of that, he often perceives the people he interacts with as NPCs and that made reading this part uncomfortable to me but that's just a matter of going against my own preference. MC's character is not very well delved into. MC also inexplicably has certain skills just come out of nowhere in opportune times that go unexplained making you constantly question how much MC knows of the world he's in. The plot is always against the MC, making the MC's actions always a s*ave to the story itself. Some of the story arcs with the MC, the ones that weren't disorienting were decent, but when looking at the whole novel through all it's permutations, the plot itself pulled so much attention that not enough was spent in character development.

About the ML

I already think the author ab*ses the MC but boy does the author hate the ML. The poor ML has to go through so many unfortunately plot points, just like the MC, his every action is a s*ave to the story. Yes I know there is a reason for this that readers will get in the novel but honestly this is my first time reading a novel in which the MC and ML had so little say in their own destiny.

About the plot

The plot is exactly why I rated this novel so low. While I can see the author planned the connection between the story arcs in advance, the execution leaves much to be desired. The MC's system spouts cryptic missions without any context and leads the MC by the nose to do god knows what tasks. While everything is somewhat connected together, the dots don't connect until the last few chapters of the novel. As a reader, I am left muddleheaded along with the MC for most of the novel with clues here and there but also knowing the unreliable narrator tag is legit and what is read in one section may not be true later on. I don't know if the author wants to be a writer or a magician because all I feel is trick after trick after trick and massive dose of angst to go with it. Amnesia is way overdone. I absolutely disagree with having so much of it and I think it hurt the story quite a bit. Two of the story arcs were actually very coherent but they are only the minority in a novel that constantly made me frustrated. I read to the end to see if it would change and found there were some good parts but still it was not enough to hold up the story.

About the world building

Or I should say what world building? The author understandably relies on the shared knowledge of cultivation novels to skip having to do world building. However I think that is quite a mistake because when magic items and or factions pop up, it's just barely introduced and then thrusts the characters into the thick of things without much of a background, making the past history of characters love, hate feel empty and without backing. There's not enough substance to the world at all and completely relies on the reader having read prior novels of the genre to follow the story along and even then it's too meagre.

About the ending

Spoiler

Even when the ending explains the reasons why for all the key plot points, it just feels like cheap consolation for slogging through all the amnesia, misunderstandings, angst, drama, love and hate yo-yoing back and forth in a tornado of disorienting plots. Though I will give the author props for at least explaining the whole mess at the end. Still... not worth it. I would have been better off not reading this novel from the start.

[collapse]

TL:DR

If you don't mind a disorienting plot with way overused amnesia plots, read this. There are some good romance bits but the plot really damages that. Don't read this in MTL as the author's chapter end comments give away the answer for most of the major mysteries. <<less

This is actually pretty interesting

I wonder why it has low rating

It's a complicated story that involved time travel, reverse time, time paradox, and a giant chess game between the god of creation vs the dark power (with a lot of shounen ai as the sprinklers in that complicated plot)

I won't give a lot of spoiler, but I guess that summarized it. Well, I suggest you all give it a try

You'll gonna love it

Ch 22

Tbh (so far) not as engaging as other cultivation or shixiong-shidi pair.

The plot still all over the place and mediocre.

... more>>
Spoiler

MC just wants to go as far as possible from ML is a bit cowardice... but understandable. But he easily get caught. Then he avoid him again, but get caught again... and ML pretending to be mortal and deceive MC is just meh. ¯_ (ツ) _/¯

[collapse]

Probably because it's still early.

and there are some hints that's make me curious. So I'm gonna stick for now.

~~~~~
chapter 28
It's personal taste, because I hate being deceived and manipulated the most, so I dislike characters who often do so.
In this story Yun Zhan (ml) deceived Bai Fanlu (mc) so much it makes me uncomfortable.
It's arguably white lie but it's the type that once you lied you have to make up hundred more lies to cover up the first lie. But boy, Yun Zhan made up thousand of lies instead just to eat Shixiong's Tofu (taking advantage).
The author also write their interaction in his fake identity very detailed, a detailed lie, it makes me uncomfortable.
Those fanservice are not cute at all.
The plot was actually started to be good, the mystery is interesting and I got a feeling author has planned everything from the start.
But I'm gotta bye bye for now because personal taste.
It's decent read tho and the translation is good. Kudos to them.
It's constantly updated in the site so you need to go there directly to check updated chapters. <<less
I'll write things that I got strong from this story.
First, amnesia! amnesia! amnesia! Important things must be said three times.
I'm okay with amnesia but I personally don't like the amount of amnesia that it has hahaha, because oh my god MC and ML's moments and interactions are so CUTE and SWEET. But most of the time amnesia prevent them from being lovey dovey. I need more of their warm interactions :'
Gong (ML) is shameless, like to tease MC x Shou (MC) is shy when teased by ML, and... pretty normal... more>> good guy in all aspects.
Hmm for me, this story has an interesting plot and flow (?). I recommended this if you like complicated story and
Spoiler
where the couple have to suffer and going through a lot of things just to be united. The story make me feel like mapping some points and then make a final string to connect all the red dots. Main couple finally united and get HE at the END, but ofc we get sweets throughout the story.
[collapse]
That kind of complicated story. And some angst from main couple and other chara's story. Don't worry it's not that sad though. Good amount of angst! Imo, the story is good and still can be enjoyed.
In the end, I still encourage you to read this by yourself. Because at the end it's personal review. <<less
(Apologies in advance for the weird format, I tried to edit my review and it shifted, changed or removed some punctuation marks and added spaces in between lines that I don't like; don't know how to edit that on a phone unfortunately)
3/5 - I tried to trust the process, but I couldn't as I was approaching the 50's.
My honest opinion (with only what I have read so far, but does not reflect the whole novel, as I have dropped it) :
Overall, the novel is not the... more>> best. I am quite disappointed in the way things were executed between the MC and ML's development, especially regarding the "big reveal" between them and the role of the antagonists. The synopsis is indeed misleading in the aspect that it doesn't capture the plot very well at all.
A better one would be: [Bai Fanglu transmigrates into the body of a 'villainous' cannon fodder, a demon lord with the same name as him. This character was so madly in love with the male lead, played and manipulated much to the point of being driven mad and dying! Bai Fanlu thus decides he must live secluded from the cultivation realm, wanting nothing more than to avoid the scumbag male lead. However, things don't quite go as planned as he keeps finding himself trapped between a rock and a hard place, forced to proceed with the plot with his desire to return back home sooner. But as things progress, Bai Fanglu finds himself encountering countless pieces of the puzzle unbeknownst to him as a reader from his original world
Avoiding the male lead only leads to more attraction and more mysteries!]
My concerns:
    • Some plot holes regarding the MC's background/past, and the original character that MC transmigrated into, the ML and other figures are inevitable but leads to a higher lack of depth for the characters.
    • The MC is quite unreliable but also has his great sides, being compassionate and quite lovable, however behind that is a broken person, holding some sort of trauma (as implied in an early arc),
    • ^ Therefore he seems to dislike the ML a lot because of the prejudice from reading the original novel prior to transmigration, hating deception and scumbag behavior; however, my problem is (this is a spoiler for what happens and is why I have dropped it; read it if you want, but I'm mainly complaining in it)
      Spoiler
      the ML disguised himself with the persona Xiao Liu to drop MC's guard (because from ML's own words, he extracted this identity from our transmigrated MC's memories), and when MC learns that the persona 'Xiao Liu' is actually the ML, he ends up coughing blood and losing his mental willpower (leading to the antagonist taking his human soul, etc.). My issue is, he was so devoted to being detached from the plot, but more specifically the characters, and despite the little affections between him and 'Xiao Liu' that developed slowly (the confession from 'Xiao Liu' and the kiss scenes), they only knew each other for about or less than a month! I understand they went through life and death in the arcs, but it was a bit underwhelming for me as this "big reveal" was very, very overdramatic, and isn't something I would consider the MC coughing up blood and fainting in the hands of the antagonist over
      I was honestly a bit disappointed that the MC could not figure out that he shouldn't waver so pathetically in the face of an antagonist holding him down (but then again, I also understand that there must be an underlying concern in him relating to his past that isn't shared by the author at this point in the novel). But again, the MC made clear distinctions to limit his attachments to the characters and gaslights himself to, and we can see that he subconsciously keeps thinking and worrying about 'Xiao Liu', but at the same time I could not see an attraction or deep devotion from the MC that could evoke that reaction. Therefore, it seemed a bit illogical and unnecessary, a bit too dramatic.
      [collapse]
    • Fight scenes are very, very brief and I understand that that is NOT the point of the novel, however, it makes the reading not very enjoyable and lacking in understanding the abilities that the MC and ML may have? It also makes the reading a bit boring as they start and finish a battle fast what do they call it when the MC succeeds at almost everything they do with little to no difficulties? That's what it gives off, and if there are problems, it's super easily solved by chance or the ML (99% of the time, the ML carries).
    • The world building is very mild and lacks depth. I honestly don't know what's going on most of the time and the side characters (most of them) on the antagonistic side are very bland to me, or don't give off much villain aura.
    • THE SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR. There are times where I just think the author may have forgotten to include it, and there are times where I think its appearance would make the plot more interesting or help the MC navigate the world better, because it felt very much like the MC was SUPER lost (especially with how the plot was shifting from his actions).
Some things I liked overall:
    • I really like the MC's other shidi and their master, although the relationship between the MC and his master seems to have more than what's on the surface and I have my own theories regarding that.
    • MC and ML's interactions (SPOILER: when ML disguises himself) were very cute to me I really liked it and the dynamic of it
    • The beginning was interesting between the MC and ML, and I was very intrigued with their (the ML and original character of MC's character) relationship - it really makes you question:
      Spoiler
      how did the original novel lead to the ML manipulating and playing the Bai Fanglu and brand the ML with the label 'scumbag' by the MC, when he seems to in love with the MC?
      [collapse]
But overall, I suppose it was an okay read
I really got my hopes up with this one and was disappointed with my own standards, so I say, take the gamble if you're interested? The novel can make you lost and disoriented with the plot holes and unreliable narration though. <<less
Incredible. Fantastic. Beautiful. I’m at a bit of a loss for words. When I read a story I crave emotional connections to the story and characters. I want my heart to race, stomach to twist in knots. I want to giggle with excitement and curse in rage. I want to cry, laugh, swoon. This story does all of that. It’s beautifully written, excellently translated, and has a satisfying HE.
I read a lot, but I very seldomly write a review, so let me say this is one of the best transmigration... more>> stories I’ve ever read. As for the genre the story is more about the adventure and bond of the MC and ml, and it focuses less on the cultivation aspect. Personally I don’t mind this. I like pure cultivation novels, but this is a more character driven story.
Do I have complaints? No. Do I have wishes? Yes. I want a happier ending for certain supporting characters, but that doesn’t take away from my love for this story. I read the whole thing in a day and a half. I couldn’t put it down. I’ll probably read anything written by this author. It’s that good. <<less
it honestly dragged a lot for me, and it got briefly interesting for a few chapters from the 90th (?) chapter onwards but nothing about this sticks to me. Neither the MC nor the ML were compelling, and none of the side characters particularly made me attached to them.
but then again the background/explanation for this matter could've been expounded in the main story and I just wanted to finish this so badly that I skimmed over it) so there's that :/ the plot wasn't particularly inspiring and despite transmigration being my poison, none of the tropes (ft. The execution) presented here piqued my interest.
This was one of those stories I had to power through since I was close to the end. It's not bad, but definitely not good.
The overall story was good. I like the plot and it's interesting with an okay closure on some plot holes I didn't really pay attention to. But the biggest thing that killed the story was the tempo of it.
The moment where I do get super invested into the plot, the momentum gets killed with a speed bump. The transitions from one plot point to another is... more>> honestly poorly executed. The one thing I think this story would've solved that was better foreshadowing. It felt like I got cake and spaghetti on the same plate with how the plot just gave me whiplash of different things. While cake and spaghetti are good separate, I would not eat them in the same bite.
The other thing that confused me is the ML's personality. At the beginning, I was under the impression that he had a more aloof character with a hidden yandere side, but turned into a golden retriever. While that change could be excusable due to the reader not getting to know the ML, that change was still off putting. Even though I got used to the golden retriever ML, with primacy at its finest, I still expected the ML to have the former personality because that's how he was introduced.
But honestly, I still stuck with the story because I genuinely liked the plot despite how all over the place it felt. There were plenty of times where I skipped through bodies of paragraphs to get to the end point. But I did liked it.
So 3 stars. <<less
The plot jumps around a lot and does not flow logically. I usually like when you can tell the POV character is saying and doing things he thinks will be interpreted one way and you can tell the other characters interpret it differently (to great effect in another Peach Blossom Codex translation, "Where is Our Agreement to be Arch Rivals"), but it happens constantly in the first 9 chapters and it's not executed well - the MC will say something that I can't see how it would have a different... more>> connotation, ML will give him a "mysterious look", and I'm clearly supposed to infer something from that, but what? The reader is just as confused as the MC. I came to the reviews to see if it got better, but it appears not, so I'm dropping. <<less
The title contains the word villain but the content isn't much about villain.
More like a rather soft hearted MC navigating a world with every person's interactions being fishy and we still don't know who we can trust. And it's quite uncomfortable for some readers.
It's not so engaging so I give it a 3 stars.
This is really interesting so far! It does feel like the summary is intentionally misleading; there's a lot of stuff happening that Bai Fanlu doesn't know about, and we as readers don't really know about. It's very clear that Bai Fanlu doesn't have all the character's memories, which adds another layer of mystery. It will be interesting to see how the story develops from here.
