Buddha Said

This novel should be called “Guts on Display,” born from a dream where the abdomen is split open by a scalpel. The intestines, meant to produce excrement, spill out brain matter instead. Amoebas writhe and dance, supernovas explode, giants paint on Jupiter’s surface, and aliens hungrily gnaw at genetic chains.

Among garlic pork, rivers of vodka, and acid rain made of colourful pills, people march through urban towers wearing astronaut helmets. A steel-crafted dancer, unable to find its eyes, turns to its customer and says, “Amitabha.”

And the Buddha replied, “Love me if you dare.”

It’s hard to say what this piece is describing. It has the surrealism of a circus, and so that’s what I’ll call it: Circus Literature.

I feel like I need to write a review, as this is one of my favorite novels, and it really is just such an interesting and beautifully written work. The writing is fantastic, and the emotions are written so genuinely and poetically, with many actual references to classical poetry and modern works. It's really hard to describe this novel without spoilers, so if you genuinely want to experience it, I'd recommend just avoiding looking at any tags or reading any reviews, and just trust me when I say it's amazing.

To... more>> somewhat explain the plot, I'd say it's mostly sci-fi with dystopian and somewhat fantastical elements. The two main characters are government assigned "archaeologists" that are tasked with exploring a series of "ruins / sites" that are basically quantum worlds outside of the usual reality, which only a certain number of the population are able to enter. Falling into each of these worlds is basically like reading a series of fever dreams, with insane happenings and completely unpredictable plots, and it really is as the author describes it: circus literature.

The main protagonist Zhao Meiyou is a little crazy in the head, but he's very down to earth and likeable, while the male lead Qian Duoduo is this bigshot with flowing long hair and immense confidence. Their romance happens very early and almost abruptly, but there's definitely more to their story, and as the plot unfolds, the pacing will eventually make sense. The novel has a relatively small cast of characters that all have important roles to play, and while I wouldn't call this an ensemble cast necessarily, every side character is well developed and has their own relevant storyline.

There's so much to this plot despite its relatively shorter length, and the author is able to bring in entire side plots with only side characters that will genuinely tear your heart out, without even one mention of either of the main characters. I only mention this, because sometimes I find it difficult to stay invested in novels when both main characters are missing in the story, but somehow I have never felt this way with this author's novels - every side character's story drew me in and had me so engaged the entire way through.

There really is not a single plot point that is left unexplained in this novel, and it is one of the most rewarding and emotionally poignant novels I've read. Genuinely to this day it still makes me cry just thinking about these characters, and is one of those plots that will stick with me for a long time. Even without writing a single word about this novel for months, I can still vividly picture the plot in my head, and feel the same emotions that I felt during my first read.

A few content warnings that may or may not turn you off, but the shou is taller than the gong in this, and the ending to this novel is an open ending, though it does lean HE. I did also listen to the audio drama, and the ending to that added a line that made it a fully confirmed HE, though a little questionable depending on what you consider happy. It's really hard to explain, but I do want to say that even if you only read HE novels please consider still giving this a shot!

To explain the m-preg and cannibalism tags, as I know they can be a little off putting to some:

Spoiler

The m-preg is a simulation, and not entirely real. There is no baby actually created. The ML does however actually get pregnant and go through all nine months of pregnancy, but... it won't be as you expect haha

The cannibalism is not described in detail, but MC does actually eat his father and share the meal with his friend. He also tends to make a lot of cannibalism jokes, and the ML does genuinely eat MC in an extra, though I won't go too into detail on that point. It's not as crazy as it sounds, I promise.

[collapse]

Also a thank you to the translator for picking this one up, I've really enjoyed rereading the first few chapters! This is really such a difficult novel to translate, and the hard work is appreciated :) <<less
