Breaking Off the Engagement… Bring it on!

One day, I was called out by my fiance, the first prince, Leon-sama and asked to come to the gardens of the royal palace. When I got there, Leon-sama and a lovely woman who clung to him awaited me… eh? He wants to break off the engagement? Wouldn’t that mean I won’t have to receive that severe queen’s training? Great!

This story is all over the place. It starts off interesting enough: as the empowering tale of a woman who happily accepts the breaking of her engagement, when in fact the other party just wanted to test her. After that though, the MC is suddenly this strong adventurer who fights monsters (sure, cool), then this whole slew of people smitten with her abruptly show up one after the other (um...), then there was this half-assed coup that ended as abruptly as it started and appeared to serve no other purpose... more>> than adding a few More admirers (?!), and the characters increasingly devolve into being mere gag characters (...). It's all becomes terribly confusing, and it feels like the author is just winging it at this point. <<less

The ML breaks off their engagement in order to test her feelings, but it doesn't go as planned since she happily agrees. The plot is interesting, but the misunderstandings are s*upid and the FL is annoyingly dense. The reactions and comments of the people around her all clearly indicates that the ML has feelings for her and yet she just repeatedly ignores it all. Even denseness must have a limit! Furthermore, all these misunderstandings could have been avoided if someone just explained the situation to her from the beginning.

The story is... meh. For the first few chapters I thought it was an interesting storyline, but I was very disappointed. MC has a lot of choices for a love interest, but she doesn't seem to be attracted to anyone. Everyone else seems to be falling in love except her, which makes the story quite dull. It's like talking to a wall. The plot is very, very, very repetitive.

Also, I don't think there will be any closure since I think the author dropped the novel.

So, this is a quick opinion after reading ahead in the raws for about 25 chapters or so. It's a really well balanced story. The world building is done well in the sense that every character that occurs seems to be an actual person (except Chris) with motivations that are, more or less, explained at rather appropriate times. Essentially, things are being so naturally hinted at that instead of saying 'oh, that came out of nowhere' you just go 'alright, now their past actions makes a lot of sense suddenly'.

Also, the heroine is great and not at all dense. She just suffers from the usual phenomen that no one ever tells her anything and then act surprised that she doesn't know about it. Even then, it's done in moderation, nothing overblown.

I'll upload the next ten or so chapters at some point since it seems like the current translator hasn't been active in several months.

Just a minor thing about the tags:
Spoiler

I took the liberty of removing the reverse harem tag since that tag appears neither on the original nor is there any such development as of now.

This story is very typical for the genre and characters are incredibly one dimensional. On top of that is a translation that while comprehensible definitely isn't enjoyable - dialogues especially don't flow well and are very awkward.

I've decided not to torture myself with this poorly written cliche anymore. I suggest you do the same.

This might worth 4 star if it ended with 20-ish chapter. The main idea is interesting, but after that, the story starts to drag a lot and lost it's charm. At chapter 40, the characters are still as boring and lifeless as ever; very 1 dimensional. I can't sympathize with them at all. The plot is paper thin, the scenes are boring, and in later chapters, I can't help but to skip paragraph to (try to find) the exciting stuff—not like there's any, mostly.

Dropping this from reading list.

I honestly have no idea where this story is going. Ririna/Liliana, our MC, is the eye of a force of nature that ridiculous gag-situations revolves around.

Think of this as a story about a muscle-head and her muscle-head friends and muscle-head family who goes around solving international issues through muscle-headed violence.

After reaching chapter 34, the end of the first arc, I can only continue to be dissapointed in many of the male characters. The main two love interests, Leon and Chris, seem to both take Ririina/Lillina for granted, while all the side characters from family to royalty involved, are constantly suprised at her not knowing something that was kept secret from her.

Spoiler

Everyones constant suprise when Lillina thinks Leon hates her, when all he has ever done is avoid her and attend other girls at parties, and then finally calling an anullment of their engagement. From an outsiders perspectice it makes sense that Prince Leon was just timid, embarrassed and wanted to see Liliina jealous. But anyone in her place would only see an annoyed Prince forced into a marriage he did not want.

Next would be Chris, the third (or second, doesn't really matter so didn't remember) prince of a neighboring country that is a spoilt brat. He seduces both Liliinas brother and Prince Leon while passing as a girl at 6 years old (can authors stop with romance before having any level of maturity?). Now he has taken an interest in Liliina and only ever seems to treat her as a plaything that he should have. Even proceeding to be happy that he got his proposal declined by her because it is interesting.

[collapse]

The saving grace of this novel is definitly Liliina herself, as she is very likeable and we are routing for her to get her way out of the engagement. The only other character I like would be Sana, Liliina's maid, after we get more details about her first love in a flashback chapter.

All in all it was entertaining but the majority of characters just left me feeling dissapointed, especially all the possible love interests. Normally in a reverse harem story like this you would root for at least one of them, but I can only root for Liliina to escape from the terrible fate, that is being with any of these male leads.

Incidentally, I have been breezing through these types of novels for a while. I love the idea of having a main character who is nonchalantly moving at her pace. It seems boorish that the releases are slow but I look forward to future developments as I'm sure many people share the same views as I. It refreshes my soul to have a MC that isn't lovestruck and obscure. Anyway, this is merely my own opinion.

My first time writing a review just to express my disappointment.

It started off greatly, the concept of Liliana's denseness of the prince's actions are laughable.

But it comes to a point where it ends up being overused, reading a whole 20 chapters just for their annulment of engagement that keeps getting postponed is getting very dull, I had to skip past a lot of texts just to find interesting plots happening.

Furthermore this novel has :

  • Repetitive writing, we know the situation from the first time she says it but why go over it for every person she meets, there are ways to skip over that conversation to prevent it from being longwinded, y'know.
  • Idiotic characters, not that I mind those types but at the very least have at least 1 character with a proper IQ, all of these family members are idiots... makes you wonder if they really are from royalty or nobles)
  • Characters being too flat, their personalities are very bland and lifeless. Especially the MC, denseness has it's limits.
  • No attachment, while reading i'd tend to empathize with the main character or other characters but there's this feeling of disconnection while you're trying to read.

The title is eye-catching, like there's a nice plot but as the story continues it becomes like a fan service, Everything is going right for the female lead while being surrounded by her harem. I dropped this after the character Chris and Allen entered the story.

It's a bit too disjointed for me. I don't have any strong emotions or thoughts while reading it. Everyone is just running around wanting nothing, except for the useless prince. It's constantly pointed out how much he's ruining everything by the our protagonist, the potatoe. There's a second love interest introduced, who's apparently much better who says 4 lines and was really strong as a kid too. The main character is just too strong and s*upid. She has apparently been stronger than ten trained guards since she was like 7.... more>> The fighting scenes involve pushing 1 person and having everyone behind them also fall down like dominos. If looney toons wrote a novel, this would be it. <<less

The story starts off interesting, with a dense tomboy agreeing to cancel her engagement. However, after that incident is amusingly resolved the dense tomboy turns into a naive shoujo MC. All the story arcs revolve around her friends falling in love or somebody falling in love with her. She even stops focusing on fighting monsters and instead
Spoiler

starts focusing on making sure people don't feel unhappy, because negative emotions create monsters.

Basically an interesting shoujo turns into a boring one.

This is the story of a Highborn Lady, fiance to the Kingdom's Prince who 'broke off' the engagement with her, while in fact, he is madly in love, he is just to shy to approach her and made a mistake. In fact, she is a HIGH LEVEL DENSE CHARACTER, which I usually despise, but maybe because for once it's a girl who is dense, I found it funny rather than annoying (well I think that if I read 2 or 3 other stories with a dense girl char I will... more>> start hating it too anyway).

So it's nothing special really, it's kinda funny and sweet if dense girl char don't piss you off yet. <<less

It's my first time righting a review on this site I usually don't like righting but I couldn't help myself with how much everyone was saying MC is dense no she's not

I mean if were in her place would you really know about the idiot prince's feelings, he is the biggest LOSER I have ever seen!!!

He is a damn coward he literally does nothing to express his feelings even when MC tried to get close to him he ran away he left her Alone at parties and went to laugh... more>> with other ladies never approaching her and don't tell me he sent her a gift and flowers at her birthdays which she didn't even like

I know am ranting but the guy is a joke really a very pathetic man

And to put the ice on the cake he went and told her to break off the engagement while having a woman by his side only to test her I mean c'mon what test thier relationship has no foundation they are practically strangers even after being engaged for years <<less

I gave it till about chapter 35, but the romance and plot in this is so terrible it really makes you wonder what the author was smoking. This is going to be filled with spoilers but I think it's important as a quick review on the first 30 chapters for people to truly understand what kind of story this is.

Our MC hates her princess education and getting married to the prince. She wants nothing to do with it and is more than over the moon when the prince cancels her... more>> engagement. Turns out though, the prince was only testing her and it went terribly. He believed the MC loved him, but she doesn't, she's rather indifferent about him. What really gets me, is that at least her brother and probably her parents too, are completely aware of this. But they continually try and "fix" the relationship in the first 30 or so chapters, with her being increasingly confused. When she finally figures out that the prince actually likes her, she decides to finally just come out and say it straight, "I don't want to get married to the prince".

This entire scenario is just.. Dumb. The "girl" that was supposedly the replacement fiance is actually a man just pretending to be his fiance. Who suggested the entire scenario to try and get there engagement annulled to give the MC her freedom. Well that guys dad ends up launching a rebellion. Our MC saves the prince and they save the royals for the MC's dad to bust in and reveal the entire this was a fake rebellion to capture the real traitors. I mean, it's just constantly, "this isn't what you think it is". Which in alot of stories is awesome! But in this one, there isn't any clues to figure out how things got to the point they did. Also, by chapter 30 we have 4 different ML's. With one of the setup to be the obvious main one, in which I've decided I don't like at all.

And of course, everyone is fighting over her, while she's bewildered by the entire scenario. It's honestly a bit frustrating just getting to chapter 35. This could have gone so many damn different ways, but the author decided to surprise the reader over and over again with no clues. I wanted to read a story about an OP ex-fiance who is finally able to enjoy her life and find true love, while her ex wallows in his own pity at missing something he never had. Instead, I got OP chick who gets jerked around constantly by everything happening around her and has so many men chasing after her she can't do anything she actually wants. <<less

Read up to chapter 182

Just a few points to note:

  • the protagonist is damn OP and dense. She is slowly building the amount of admirers who are all falling for her with every her action. (reverse harem)
  • A typical plot that you can predict what will happens the end BUT you will have no idea who will end up with the protagonist...
  • Strength is No. 1 here.
  • Her family and her friends are all powerful, especially her grandmother and grandfather. Wayyyy OP.
  • And lastly, I want more chapters on Sana!
If you are looking for... more>> a light-hearted novel with OP characters, this may be the one you are finding for:) <<less

It's a little shame that this Mary Sue Saga is most likely over. She was a good one in a way since this work is not meant seriously or dramatic anyway. Also it is not like she is the sole OP character, after all, her retainers and family are all on the same ludicrous level.

Personally I'm fond of her personality, rather carefree yet caring, very calm indeed and sure fit to be queen regent.

Of course it is also a shame that many are infuriated with her but she just cheers... more>> for others and does not know love. At least some relationships did develop and did not just stay as gag.

Who likes it, likes it and who does not does not, I like it quite much for what it is and I hope that it will continue someday. <<less
