My Daughter Grew Up to “Rank S” Adventurer

After losing his leg as a startup adventurer, he retired to his hometown in the countryside. Doing things such as collecting medicinal herbs, exterminating magic beasts and wild beasts, and helping with the villagers’ farm work, it’s hard to decide whether to call our protagonist an adventurer or a handyman. And while doing these things his age quickly approached thirty.

One day while searching the mountains for herbs, he discovered an abandoned child. Thinking that he couldn’t just leave it, he took it home and raised it until his age approached forty.

His now grown-up daughter had also wanted to become an adventurer, likely from growing up watching her father. Although her father had taught her the sword since she was young for self-defense, her talent at it was quite impressive. Thinking that it would be better for her not to be stuck out in the country for the rest of her life, our protagonist sent her to the adventurers’ guild in the Capital.

His daughter officially became an adventurer.

After another five years, the protagonist, now in his forties, is still acting as a pseudo-adventurer in the countryside. However his daughter is now a distinguished S Class adventurer but hasn’t returned home once yet…

“Just when will I get to see Daddy again…!?”

Based on MTL chapters 1 ~ 50, I am rating this JP web-novel as better than average vs. The 150+ I've read. It mixes (a) slice of life tales from the father and the daughter when they are separated early on and (b) action & adventure sequences of battling magic beasts, demons, and other more human antagonists.

The characters are likable and not entirely flat, the writing seems reasonably sophisticated (though my judgment is limited by MTL), and the in*est vibe is somewhat tamer than I expected (I consider that good... more>> thing). Daughter and father meet quite a crew of somewhat fleshed out characters and there's plenty of friendships, mofufu moments, and betrayals to make the plot and characters move and, depending on your POV, maybe even develop a little. <<less

A lovely read, very fun! The characters are very likable, especially the MC and her dad. The beginning plot line is quite light hearted and cute.

character wise, it's pretty solid. The relationship between her and her dad is very cute and fluffy. Yes, she has a father complex but it's strictly familial (a la my dads the best, no one can come close!! Kinda complex). Her father is also a very cool and upstanding man, and it's easy to see why his daughter is so taken with him!

There is a... more>> kind of disconnect however by what he says his power level is vs who he tussles with. Even if they're supposedly better than him he still beats them in a sort of "lucky" way and comes out on top, repeatedly. The stories feels like it can't make up its mind by having the father repeatedly say "oh I lost my leg and came home with no glory, I'm low ranked!" And yet lucks his way into wins with at least two or more swordsmen that are way stronger than him. It can grate on your nerves a bit.

Plot wise, the beginning is as summary states (OP daughter just wants to visit her dad) but there's a deeper plot about a demon king reviving and monsters increasing, but we have yet to truly reach that part yet. <<less

You know how some stories are about buolding a big harem? This is about building a big adoptive family. It’s like let’s start with a few daughter figures but also start to add uncle figures, aunt figures, grandfather figures, and son figures (and maybe even a wife figure one day). It’s wholesome as can be and has enough mystery for me to be invested.

This is a real good one.

A story of a doting parent and a adopted child who feels the same. What happens when a retired, humble adventurer raises a child and they become diligently resourceful? Definitely a gorgeous novel, dramatically emotional, with solid and basic fundamentals. I came across the manga and was inspired into wanting more. The world is beautiful and full of reason, plus it's realistic, sound theories with strong storytelling makes me feel like I am just a commoner viewing it all by chance. I can't help but fall in love with the... more>> characters, not one-all of them. I'm saddened when one dies, and on the edge of my seat when villains are near. <<less

It has a decent first impression.

The premise is that an ex-adventurer finds an orphaned baby in the wilderness and raises her. She grows up, and in an attempt to make a name for herself, leaves him to become an adventurer herself. She becomes an S rank adventurer 5 years later (hence the title), but she has a huge case of father complex, wanting to go home to see her father, but since she's too valuable of an asset to the country, she's not allowed to leave to go see him.

It's... more>> still too early to see how it will pan out, but it fleshes out the setting and characters decently. For the setting, while there's the whole adventurers, guild, and the usual fantasy tropes, there's none of the bullsh*t game stats that I'm sure you are all too tired of skimming. To be honest, that's a low standard to have for a setting, but the media is what it is. Characters on the other hand, while a bit too PG (which makes it feel like it's aimed at young adults), are reasonable and somewhat understandable.

However, I will be very disappointed if that's the whole story; daughter not being able to come home for the entire novel will be insanely dull. I hope that there will be an actual development, whether that be the characters, or the people around them. It seems a bit slice-of-life ish, which I'm okay with, but we'll see how it goes from here.

All in all, a promising start. <<less

From what I've read so far, which is one chapter, I like the writing style and didn't find any of the wording awkward, personally.

The plot may not be that unique, but the author is able to keep the mood. Our main protagonist isn't OP and is very normal in strength. The dynamic relationship between the daughter and the protagonist is what really sold this story for me. The fact that the protagonist continues to treat his adoptive daughter like real family. He doesn't only pamper her, like most stories, but... more>> her isn't overly strict either. I think it's rare to find a "family" in which the main character is not overly strict or pampering towards his/her family.

Update: This feels like for real bullsh*t how much trouble she has, going to see her father. <<less

I truly recommend to read this novel, even though its release time too slow.

The story tell about two MCs, father and daughter. The father is ex-adventurer and the daughter is S-rank adventurer. Each of them have their own story that connected one each other and you can feel the harmony from them when they meet each other. For me personally, the plot is interesting and the twist not like tragic or something like that. If you want to read like slow life, you can get from the father MCs, and... more>> if you want to read some action, comedy or youth you can get from the daughter MCs.

As for character growth, both the MCs growth base of their pace. The daughter MCs is easy to see the progress of her character growth, as for the father MCs you only know his character growth when tracing his past history as adventurer and his return to hometown.

Well I recommend this novel with good story and fully enjoy this. <<less

So far so good. Was looking for parenting novels with lots of sweetness but ended up finding this. I have to say that there are a lot of good Slice of Life Japanese WNs, and this is one of the better ones. This type of novel is good for a short binge and casual read. Hopefully it doesn't start feeling repetitive and slow-pace.

f*cking finally, a f*cking good Slice of Life

The MC is a well-mannered, good-natured, level-headed, mature, and loving father which is pretty damn rare in LN/WN. Although most of the story atmosphere is rather mild and comfortable, there are plenty of tense moments as well as combats but they are not the main focus, the bigger plot is there but most of the time the story focused more on the personal relationship and detail between characters and the conflict is mostly used to drive the story rather than the main driver... more>> and goal. The pacing is neither slow nor fast and the mood is laid back and comfortable most of the time but without being sloppy or annoying.

Most SoL I've found is just a wish-fulfillment filled with indulgent and Mary Sue/Gary Stu MC (which is understandable don't get me wrong, after all most of us are already tired of the sad and tiring reality so I can understand why some people love to read that kind of story but I personally can't stand it). It is difficult for me to get immersed in a story where the MC is a dumb mary sue but get 999 luck so anything and everything they do is blessed by the heaven and earth so they can get anything and everything without putting in any effort and they can never be wrong because they are the bestest at everything and the world revolve around them yada yada yada

Anyway, I end up ranting about unrelated stuff, my bad. Those stories just get on my nerve and I'm just happy to finally found something worthwhile. <<less

I have been reading this ever since we were in the first volume. The translator/editor/whoeveralsohelps are doing a great job so you are in for a translation with effort put in, not a MTlL copypaste.

Now for the actual novel. It is great, of course it has some things that may feel a bit convenient so it could deter people who enjoy something more mature. However it is very well done, the relationship with her father is wholesome. I wont go into detail because for that you already have many other... more>> reviews and the description, just to. Say that with the first volume you already know if it is for you. I can also recommend the manga in case you are unwilling to invest time in the novel without knowing if its a 5/5 for you. It wont give you everything but its a nice way to get into it.

i enjoy the manga illustrations very much, its also a 4.5 or 5 for that one. <<less

This is my first time reviewing But that huge time-skip from the daughter, it would have been nice to see how she grew, trained and adapted to her village, her relationship from the children, her pov as a child and how her father showed her to the mountain to train also to meet newb monstas and the same time to learn knowledge about her world but at the present she is killin calamity beasts (which are really very strong) cuz its irritatin, and gets in her reunion between her and his father.I know Im biased, well its still chapter 4 but I cant wait for the future chaps, I wan read her and other side character's POV; what happened in before the timeskip, knowlesge about the world, beasts and most of all the future relationship with her father, and what her father is going to be. Iwant more!

Ty, and sorry for bad english

At first, I thought we're going to get the cliche isekai, where the MC will get op, the world is light and bright without any shreds of black in the society and that we'll see this more in MC's pov.

But I was wrong. We get to see more of the father who lives in the village, things to do for a retired adventurer.

LOL this novel is really fun.

The writer give you a very heartwarming story of MC and her father. But because this is an isekai story, there is a plot about Demon King and all, but the writer really want to focus on the fluffy and happy parts. Just when you are about to know more about the Demon King, the writer just slap that plot away, don't give a sh*t and give you a heartwarming plot. Lol he just didn't care. If you want to know about the demon king,... more>> wait for another 100 chapter. If you want a fluffy developement, this novel is for you. No 'I wanna marry my daughter' sh*t happening. Thank god. <<less

First impressions are pretty good so far. Reads like an actual novel, no tacked-on Isekai elements, although it does have the pretty common swords+magic+adventurer's guild setting, and it explains enough about the world that it's engaging without giving out so much useless or uninteresting information that it gets boring and I get the urge to start skimming paragraphs. Takes a pretty realistic approach to most scenarios. Translation is good.

There's no incessant focus on raising skills by accomplishing vague goals (swing sword or fight a long time and you get better),... more>> but more focusing on honing instincts and learning through practice rather than lazy supernatural boosts and whatnot. Inherent power is still absolutely a factor in how powerful people are, but there's less using game mechanics as a narrative crutch because, well, this isn't a game-world. It's a refreshing read after all the bog-standard Isekai novels lately. <<less

Pretty promising so far!

With the setting properly fleshed out in the prologue, the beginning chapters have followed up nicely.

That being, Begriff's teenage S Rank Adventurer daughter is too busy being constantly bombarded with work to go home.

It's too soon to tell, but I get the feeling it's going to be a good fic.

I try to review works without spoiling anything in an objective manner focusing on style, pacing, technique and what is appropriate for each work, so here goes!

This work is quite an experience, the focus on the premise seems counterintuitive at first, but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing, the author goes to great lengths to make the story enjoyable and fun while still retaining a certain degree of somberness and mystery through the whole ordeal, the dialog is great! everyone has a great personality and they are all interesting... more>> and enjoyable to read, the only drawback I see here is that there is barely any character growth, although the characterizations are amazing, some character quirks stay the same from beginning to the end which is kind of unrealistic, but this is part of the course with this kinds of works... so I can't really complain, it's part of the style... I personally dislike "one quirk" characters but I have to make emphasis here, they aren't monotone, they just have a very clear and distinct personality that never changes.

The story is split right down the middle focusing on two different POVs, ML and FL (father and daughter) which gives the author plenty of leeway to portray each one and characterize their struggles and adventures separately, I was overjoyed by the fact that there doesn't seem to be any "romance" (in*est) shoved into the story, it's a doting father and a spoiled daughter and that's what it had to be from the start to actually work.

This splitting of the arches until they converge again is refreshing and exiting, you really look forward towards when and how things are going to converge, and I find it greatly enjoyable that while one is focusing on adventure and advancing the "plot", the other is focusing on deepening the character and exploring their personality further.

Regarding worldbuilding... the world is small, veeeery small, but what has being shown and explained is what matters and I don't think this lack of focus is a drawback, you're left wondering about the mysteries of the world and when things start to get explained a bit more it doesn't feel like an exposition dump, the author has being very good at the golden rule of "show, don't tell".

The fight sequences are very well portrayed and you can clearly see the actions and the events unfold as they are being acted, what I found most enjoyable is how you can basically "see" the distinct fighting styles of each character, it's not just "swing swong he ded" the way the sequence is portrayed could very well be the script for an animated sequence.

The only reason why I don't give this work 5 stars is because the pacing is kind of wonky, although it's supposed to jump between POVs, sometimes I feel like this works against the work because suddenly you have to keep track of two separate cliffhangers that aren't going to be resolved on the next couple of chapters, perhaps if the timing was adjusted a bit it would work better but the synchronization of the plot devices appearing mostly at the same time on both POVs left me thinking that maybe, if he had just waited one more chapter to give the reader a bit of a breathing space, it would have being better.

That being said, I would have given this work 4.5 stars if the rating allowed for it.

Thank you for reading!!! <<less

First off I'm going to say I enjoy reading this story. The translation is good and story is somewhat interesting. Belgriff is a fun MC and reading about how he lives his life and deals with the loss of his leg is refreshing and inspiring.

The reason I only gave 4/5 is because nothing has happened so far to really draw me in. I stopped reading for a few weeks and never felt desperate for more chapters. It's just something I'll stop to read when I have time, and enjoy.

Really nice story, while the writing stile is somewhat parculiar it is not bad and gives the story a unique feeling. The story presents a nice father-daughter relastionship that doesn`t transform in some wierd loli-romance.

Another big plus is the character depth that makes every single one feel special. They follow through with their individual goals (living in your birth village, beeing an succesful adventurer ect.) and don`t get sweept up in the protagonists goal and develope in different directions. The plotline doesn`t branch of into all directions and stays mostly... more>> liniar but doesn`t become monotone, like storys with similiar motives do.

All in all in all a relaxing, uniquely written and exciting story <<less
