This is the first novel in the series.

There is an urban legend that children tell one another about a shinigami that can release people from the pain they may be suffering. This “Angel of Death” has a name–Boogiepop. And the legends are true. Boogiepop is real.

Told in a non-linear fashion that asks the reader to piece together the sequence of events to solve the mysteries alongside the characters, Kouhei Kadono’s first Boogiepop novel took First Place in Media Works’ Dengeki Game Novel Contest in 1997 and ignited the Japanese “light novel” trend. Today, there are over 2 million Boogiepop novels in print, a feature film and manga adaptation based on the first book, an original manga entitled Boogiepop Dual, and the unforgettable original anime series Boogiepop Phantom.

Boogiepop and Others is an excellent character-driven mystery novel. The plot is very simple, and author announces this himself at the very beginning, but the execution of multiple narrative perspective was so high quality, that reading it was a very satisfying experience nonetheless. The way you get more details and clues with every new viewpoint, that's what impressed me in this work.

Don't expect much action or horror, at least in this volume the focus was on establishing the lore and characters. Also the whole novel is slow, so be ready... more>> for that.

Now, about other aspects. Unlike in other works with multiple protagonists, here they are, for the most part, tools for delivering information. You never get the chance to observe the internal monologue for the truly important characters (aside from the interludes). Although don't misunderstand - all the protagonists have their unique personality and story, but they are not always related to the core mystery and events.

I also liked the romance aspect. Some of the characters have some very really weird relationships, but that's what makes it interesting to watch. And I would say that romance has pretty important place from the thematical standpoint, so it definitely didn't feel redundant.

The only thing that bothered me was that the final chapter wasn't as satisfying as I'd hoped, because

protagonist in it was the most boring one, and we knew the outcome from the very beginning

. But I know, this is just the first volume out of 20+, so it's wrong to call it a flaw. The real payoff will likely be in the next arcs, as there are still plenty of mysteries and potential for character development left. <<less
