18-year-old Mahoro is tasked with a mission when he enters Loewen Military Academy—to find any clues about the disappearance of Siegfried Baldwin. Loewen Military Academy is a prestigious military academy, the only one in the kingdom authorised to teach magic. There, Mahoro meets Noah, from the noble House of St Johns. Noah is immensely popular and even boasts his own personal fan club, but he only shows interest in Mahoro, a struggling cadet who can barely keep up with the lessons. According to Noah, he says that his instincts tell him to make Mahoro his, but suddenly a storm sweeps over what was supposed to be a peaceful academy life!? This is the start of a saga of magic, dragons, love and conflict—and the secrets that entangle them!

Disclaimer: I am the translator for this series. At the time of this writing, there is only one volume out so far, and I will adjust the rating as new volumes are released.

Magic is restricted in the Durand Kingdom, limited to only military use, and only Loewen Military Academy is authorized to teach it. Furthermore, only bloodlines from the Five Noble Houses are able to use magic, and the elites of the elite gather at Loewen Military Academy. It is under this backdrop that Mahoro Baldwin enters the academy. As... more>> exciting as a new school and learning magic are, he quickly becomes overwhelmed with the courses, and for some reason, the top cadet at the academy, Noah St Johns, intimidates and later propositions him. Mahoro only wishes to do well in his courses and to find out any information about his dear distant cousin, Siegfried Baldwin, whom he had grown up with. As he learns more about the mysterious circumstances surrounding Siegfried's disappearance, he becomes entangled with secrets, conspiracies, and questions about his entire life. This first volume does a wonderful job captivating the reader's interest, building a fascinating world with a great cast of characters to leave you wanting more. It touches on a lot of concepts that I would love to see further development for: familiars, bonding with them, dragons, magical synergies, school friendships and rivalries, magic mentorship, and a certain magical interference at the end of the volume. Due to the short length of the novel and the development of the plot and action, the concepts mentioned are fairly shallow at this point, but I hope to see them further developed in the subsequent novels of this series.

The main couple of the series is Mahoro and Noah. Readers who do not like domineering love interests will probably want to skip this series. The couple dynamics are very unequal at this point, but I can see potential for Mahoro's growth—especially if he can learn to control his magic. (I would love to see the Commandant become a proper mentor to him, and the Platinum Three grow closer to Mahoro, working together as they bicker and support him.) Noah does have layers to him besides being perfect, arrogant, and overbearing. He is always stopping to ask Mahoro philosophical questions—questions he's probably struggling with himself. There are hints that there is more than meets the eye to him, and I hope to see Yakou-sensei develop him more too, as well as the cast of supporting characters.

Overall, it's a great start to a new series, and I look forward to reading more. <<less
