Gu Shuyao, a translator proficient in multiple foreign languages, finds herself transported to the Republic of China era (~1920s) after a car accident. She becomes Gu Shuyao, a young lady from a gentry family with a good background and pleasant appearance. She is also engaged to a dashing and promising young marshal. At first glance, she seems to be a winner in life!

However, Gu Shuyao’s new life is far from perfect. The original, born into a declining traditional family, faces conservative and ignorant attitudes. She was almost subjected to foot binding and has nothing in common with the sophisticated socialites of the foreign concessions. Her fiancé looks down on her, surrounded by other women, mocking her for her feudal mindset and lack of worldly experience. Even when she becomes pregnant, he refuses to marry her. His confidante flaunts their relationship in front of her, speaking in foreign languages.

I will probably be the first to admit that this novel is a guilty pleasure of mine.

It is set around 1920s China, when the old culture, which is often seen in historical novels with empresses, concubines and life in boudoirs, intersects with modern life as it is now. This time in China was of fighting for freedom, women demanding for education and independence, but still living in patriarchal society. But it is also a time of parties, beautiful qipaos, western culture intertwining with eastern, travel and free love.

The timeline is... more>> also a significant part of the premise of the story. At the beginning, the FL is restricted by the past societal norms which state that women should be at home, birth children and education & career are unimportant. She strives for independence and for her life to be decided on her own rather than her elders or men. The ML, on the other hand, is a standard example of a man born into patriarchal society. He expects the woman to be dependant on him and to stay at home, although he also admires those who are educated and 'up to the times'.

As the story progresses, it can be seen how FL and ML grow individually and in their relationship with each other. The FL gradually opens up her heart and begins to trust him, while the ML gradually realises that to have you have to let go, and it truly grips my heart to see how he loves the FL and tries to change for her.

Actually, I haven't finished reading the novel as of writing this review. I have started reading it a few years ago and recently, when I came back to it, I discovered that it was taken down from the original site. I am unsure to the reasons (maybe because this time period in China is glossed over in history due to it being a socialist country now and the story is too liberal?), but I am determined to translate it to the end both because I like it so much, and because it is unlikely that someone else will find it and decides to share it with wider audience.

I believe this novel is definitely worth it so I invite you to give it a try!

Edit: people rate it so badly after only a few chapters have been released, not even writing reviews to explain why - sad :/ <<less
