Opening his eyes, Lin Haoqiang returned to the day he divorced his wife.

In the last life, he was a gambling addict, lazy, and abandoned his wife and daughter.

As he was dying, he learned that his wife became ill from overwork and had long since passed away, and his daughter became a criminal and died on the street after ten years of being in prison.

Although Lin Haoqiang died, he did not go to after life as he expected. God not only gave him a chance to return back in time, but also gave him a small farming space.

A three Michelin stars chef dies of old age having lived the last fifty years of his life completely alone. He was heavily addicted to drinking and gambling in his younger years and divorced his wife of five years, left to the US and there straigtened up and learned to cook. His biggest regret was losing his family back then.

So, now he is reborn at the age of thirty, still married with a daughter, on the day of his upcoming divorce. Not only he manages to convince his wife to... more>> give him another chance, he discovers that he has a magical space with fertile land and spirit water which makes plants grow and mature practically overnight.

He is extremely hardworking, capable, extremely experienced in business, and no doubt a genius chef, making money hand over fist, first with steamed buns with tasty stuffings, then with juices, with porridge, with medicinal plants grown in his space all by himself (he does a lot of backbreaking farming!!!) but he never misses the important part - good family, not good work, nor good money is what makes life worth living.

Spoiler

At the end of the novel the secret of his rebirth and who stands behind the space is revealed and he is offered a choice again - personal immortality away from his home or a normal mortal life with his family. He again choses his fam.

This is the usual fairy taleish "pill for regret" C-novel about second chances in life with a number of cheats. The story is told in a very simple language, easy to mtl, if you do not want to wait for the translation. It describes all normal pleasures in life that hard work, money and a lot of magic luck can buy. Good business, good home, good people, good luck, good values. The ML is a very likeable man, truly, the best modern Chinese husband one can imagine. He is good looking both outside and inside.

Except a couple of things that looked way off to me, even on him, because he lived and worked for half a century in North America and should know better. I understand that it reflects more on the author than him, but still

Spoiler

It's about him hiring staff for his tiny juice joint where he sells freshly squeezed juices.

The first thing that was off was his ageism and maybe sexism, prejudice against women who are barely ten years older than him. He refuses to hire and pay good wages to women as young as forty years old! They are like unattractive old grannies in his mind and he is thirty himself! They only deserve low pay in his mind (2.5K yuan vs 5K yuan per month to the twenty years old pretty employees), and he feels that they will not be attractive to his customers who are, by the way, school kids, elderly, sick people who need medicinal juices, and white collar workers from nearby offices.

And the second thing was working conditions for his employees. 8-9 hours a day work, no formal breaks, and no days off whatsoever!!! 365 days a year! WTF??? Is this even human? That was how his wife worked in his first life, no days off, and that is why she eventually died from overwork. Coincidentally, at the age of forty! He himself lived until he was eighty or so.

Anyways, I am happy to be the first to leave a review and I am grateful to the translator who introduced this novel to us. Thank you! It was a pleasant, relaxing read about good things in life. <<less
