At last, after almost 2 years of constant restarts and re-reads, I finished Beatless. Like many readers, I started with the anime first, the concept of modern future with humanoid robots, powered by AIs far smarter than humans was very interesting and eye-catching. After expiriencing both the novel and the animation, I can say that even though animation wasn't bad at all, it failed to explain all the story details clearly, so if you want to truly understand what is happening, the motivations of different characters and the concept of... more>> analog hacking, I recommend reading the novel first.

The next thing regarding why it took so long to finish the novel is that the first volume was too boring. And it is a pretty serious issue, considering that there are only two volumes. First volume felt like a far too long intro, with actually important events only near the end. But the second one, mama mia, finished it like in 2-3 days, and was very reluctant to take breaks. All in all, it was pretty good story, with bits of romance, action, battles using sci-fi weapons and even some adventures-like moments. Sometimes the actions of the main characters (humans) raised some questions and doubts, but they are like 17 years old, though most adults were "that is not our business" 90% of time.

What I liked the most was the concept of analog hacking and its further projection by author onto things that only look like humans. Made me wonder how I would behave and what my thought would be in the world where you can't be certain that person in front of you isn't living being at all. And considering the last decade's rapid progress in AI development, I would say the future portrayed in the novel is really not that far away. LLM AI models already can do so much, as an example I heard of AI V-tuber, that became popular in last years. Basically, it can interact with chat, respond to what is displayed on the screen, hear and speak with other people during a stream, make tweets, reply to emails and much more, like it is just crazy. Who knows, maybe in 10-20 years we will witness the birth of the ultra-high perfomace AI, which will suprass humanity's intelegence. Excited for the future, though the only problem is to actually be alive at that time with all the tension and conflicts around the world right now. As for rating, I think it's definitely not perfect, but quite close, so 4.5 would be fair. <<less
