It is quite a good novel. I will rate it on the basis of how good is the plot and characters.

Positive:

    1. Plot: Interesting cultivation/power-up method and not repetitive.
Negative:

    1. Too much description maybe author wants to increase word count.
    2. Characters: Side characters don't have much role in the story.
    3. Heavy plot armor.

This novel is a hit or miss.

If you are not bothered that much by the mind numbing amount of luck the MC hold and just treat reading this as low level entertainment then it's a great choice.

The MC always win, but he usually win in pretty entertaining way so I still find myself reading to the end. The strongest part of this novel would be the long list of character introduced, several factions, decent world building.

I find a really strong influence from Naruto (except that the Naruto here always win... more>> and is extremely lucky) so if you enjoy battle shonen stuff, this is a good fit for you.

Beware: The first 25-30% is pretty rough, sub-par comparing to the rest, both plot and writing. <<less

I won't say that it is the best thing I have ever read, however I am fond of this. It has many instances of plot armor, and cliches, and I felt the ending was rushed. Despite that though, I can honestly say that I enjoyed the experience of reading this.

It is good. The MC is too lucky and all the females are described beautiful by MC who is lecherous and I didn't like how the ending of this novel didn't coincide with the next novel.

I would rate this novel 3.5 if I could, but since I cant I give 4 because the initial 900 chapters are actually very good.

The things I like the most is the fact that there are many character that you start looking up to the progress of them and the MC doesn't abandon them, HOWEVER, this get worse with the progress of the novel until is get negligible (sadly).

what I really don't like is that the last 500 chapter are clearly rushed with increased lack of consistence of the author,... more>> always forgetting things and leave plot holes. <<less

I have read it all... and I can say that the translator is completely bad....... it could have been a 4star novel in my opinion, even a 5 if that person know more then one way to describe "i am going to the toilet", but I will set it at 3 because of that person simply bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad translation and I will not recommend reading this because of his... translation? can we even call it that?

BUT !!! BUT!!!! if you can see... more>> beyond the repetition of words its actually a good novel and can be used as a "in-between" for your current novels, its perfect for that, specially if you allow yourself to give a fresher sentences of the one's that are used all the time too describe things but means the same.. so all in all, it is worth to give a try (but ofc, its a typical one you will find everywhere, but one of the above average, so do not be put off by what I said about the translator) <<less

I have to clarify in the beginning, that I'm not a native English speaker.

The only reason I mention it is that there are lots of descriptions in the novel, and it should be included in a review. (I'm also not an experienced commenter, and even though I've read a lot, it doesn't mean, I can decide whether a novel is an 'objectively' good one.)

My mother language contains lots of versions of the same expression with different shades of meaning which makes way easier writing and reading descriptions. In... more>> comparison, most descriptions in English are very dim.

1) the author

I don't know the author, so I won't write too much about him.

I like the way, he leads the storyline and his style in most aspects, but he (seemingly?) has some problems with his memory.

A good example is when the MC goes underground, and the author writes a quite long description of the way down, how deep they went, or how complicated the tunnels are, then after a few chapters a big battle broke out, and they are suddenly no more in an abyss deep underground, but in a mountain range above. (It's not a concrete example, so I didn't put it in spoiler tag) Or they are in a desert, and without a given reason they can land on a mountain with lush green forest.

2) the world, the power-system

The best aspect of this novel, in my opinion, is the world it created.

The power system is quite logical, and even though there are some points in the levelling up, which are explained only later, it's not too disturbing.

The basic levels are:

Dou Zhe > Dou Shi > Da Dou Shi > Dou Ling > Dou Wang > Dou Huang > Dou Zong > Dou Zun > (Ban Sheng) > Dou Sheng > Dou Di > ?

Spoiler

The reason the '?' mark is there is because the last chapter indicates, that there is an even higher realm than Dou Di (or at least there is a place, where the Dou Dis went off to, where in my opinion should be even higher levels.

[collapse]

The world is vast and has unlimited potential, and in my opinion, it's perspective-leading is extremely well-made.

Spoiler

In the beginning, we are in a small town, where a 'little' clan lives, and there are some small fights with the two other clans. When the MC's wife-to-be (Yanran) comes to cancel the marriage, due to the conflict with an overlord of the empire the MC's long training begins.

We get to know the mountain range nearby, then some other places in the empire, but ultimately he has to flee - how unexpected - he leaves for a region with even stronger individuals. After some training, we get to know, how tiny his original clan was.

He goes to the Jia Nan Academy in the Black Corner Region, where he trains, and after some effort on his side (and with some luck from the author), he grows in strength again.

He can exterminate that originally large being (Misty Cloud Sect), but in the process - 'accidentally' - his teacher falls into the hands of the Hall of Souls (more likely the Hun clan), which gives him the want to train and to attain even more power.

I won't write down the whole story, but it's still true, that he - and the reader too - only gradually discovers, how grand the world truly is:

He was born in a small clan in a small town in the smallest empire at the outer part of the continent, etc.

(Sorry for my inability to write it down coherently, and correctly, I hope it can be understood.)

[collapse]

The reason I decided to write about the world and the power-system together is due to their quite complicated connection to each other.

Although the training environment is a basic need in the xianxia, wuxia, etc. novels, it's not so close every time. The energy-absorption from nature is clearly a common aspect of these novels, but
Spoiler

I don't remember a novel with such a restriction toward advancement, like in the case of Origin Qi.

It's explained, that every time a new world is created, it's creation produces a set amount of Origin Qi, which is later absorbed in order to break through to the Dou Di class.

This might be common for some more experienced readers, but I've never met a novel (or just didn't read to that stage yet), where there was such a strong limitation. (It's basically impossible to step into the Dou Di class, the MC's case was only a lucky encounter with the help of the author.)

[collapse]

The world is vast and has unlimited potential. - In every aspect. The main reason for my statement is the title of the last chapter:

Chapter 1648 - The End Is Also A Beginning

Spoiler

At the end of the story Xiao Yan is a Dou Di, but he suddenly finds another realm, which is unexplored (at least we don't know it yet) - and in my opinion it should be on an even higher standard, than the ancient clans, and the ancient times of the Dou Qi Continent.

2.5) the Heavenly Flames

Sorry for putting the whole thing into a spoiler tag, but I can't talk about them without spoilers...

Spoiler

I'm fond of this kind of natural treasures and/or spirits, but I greatly missed the other elements. Although there were some others mentioned, they didn't appear during the fights or the other events.

The only exception is that Black Demon Lightning, but it's only strengthening the 'emptiness-feeling'... Although there is also extremely cold - like the Ice River Valley's special Qi or the Nine Serene Spring, the elements aren't used for anything.

In the beginning, it was hard for the MC to deal with someone whose Qi had the earth's properties, but at the end, it just faded away, and I don't remember anyone with a too special water, earth, wind, or any other strength, excluding the poison... (Poison Qi)

Naturally, it can be explained by the special environment, the different world, and it can be considered one speciality of this novel (?).

[collapse]

3) the characters

I don't really want to write about it, because I'm not experienced with judging them...

Xiao Yan

He is egotistical and gives back everything hundredfold, be it good- or ill-will. He is always right and any woman he meets falls for him.
Spoiler

At least he doesn't sleep with each of them...

[collapse]

To say something good about him, he's hard-working, and persistent, even though most of this can be assigned to his god-like luck (originating from the author).

It's a funny fact, but his memory isn't the best either...

Spoiler

At the end before the final war, he once has some thoughts about the Tou She Ancient God, and he clearly remembers the location under the Jia Nan Academy, where the jade began to act strangely. If I'm not mistaken, he even considers the possibility of the last Dou Di's Mansion to be there... The only problem is that he doesn't explore it, and eventually forgets about it in only a few months... (Before that he could remember this for years though...)

/Later the author writes this possibility off with the ultra-strong gatekeeper of the Tou She Ancient God. - He didn't have the strength to explore beforehand./

[collapse]

Xun'er

She is in love with Xiao Yan, it's clear from the very beginning (hope it's not considered spoiler (?)), but she ultimately hides her identity from Xiao Yan.

Naturally, it can be justified - 'It would not be beneficial for his growth.', but I think it was mostly due to the author also not having a clue what strength an ancient clan ought to have.

the others

I'm running out of time, but they are not the best side-characters. The only exception is maybe Yao Lao, but in the last part he also falls behind and is 'only' the alliance head.

All the 'special constitutions' are in high regard in the beginning, but after a few hundred chapters the special constitutes are falling back, they're not too important.

The 'god-like' luck of the MC is present here too:
Spoiler

when he is fleeing from seven star Dou Sheng, he almost runs out of Spiritual Strength, but coincidentally the girl who is with him has a constitution, whose blood can nourish one's spiritual strength...

[collapse]

It's not a complete review, naturally, it has many flaws, and there are many other things the novel did well, or just ignored, but I've been working on this for more than 3 hours, and it was quite draining to write in English so much. I hope it wasn't a too bad first try, but ultimately I wish to all of you to have a great time reading any novels. <<less

Unlike other Chinese novels I've read, this one makes an attempt to tie up loose ends by conclusion and relatively succeeds. Like other Chinese LNs, the parts that describe the fake mechanics of the world are all skimable (eg, how to form a 9-tier dan), but the relationships between the MC and his friends, family, and lovers make it a worthwhile read.

Disclaimer: read MTL version for the latter part of the novel... making the lengthy description of fictional mechanics and battles very skimable...

It is a good story, if you don't mind him having a cheat guardian being OP almost the whole time.

There is some crafting, training... unbelievable training speed, lucky treasures, etc that one would normally find in a Xuanhuan. Motivations and a few side characters make it interesting at first but they are quite shallow. They meet, something embarrassing or exciting event that almost happens, then nothing. A few times they often just regret but then that is it, but this is usually passable since its the usual chinese web novel.... more>> The thing that drives the story is how eventful his adventure becomes but it is somewhat ridiculous that he always manages to fight with strong people just because of his cheat teacher.

My major complaint:
Spoiler

The only complaint I have is that the author, or translator, is inconsistent with the timeline of the whole event.

1.5 years until the 3 year meeting, but at one point Ya Fei says they haven't met for 3 years. Ling Ying says MC is going to come back within a few months, but later it is says that "within 3 years time, he collected map 3 fragments".. when he found the map fragment a few months after he left the Xiao clan to train. 1.5 years + couple of months != 3 years...

BTTH is kind of the DBZ of light novels, that is mediocre compared to all the niche series currently available, but set the standard for modern wuxia. The plot is basically your standard recipe – take a weak but arrogant male lead in a lawless society with surprisingly rigid divisions in power levels – get OP in first 10-50 chapters, get addicted to popping pills, get all the treasures and all the women and become a god. However it’s still a pretty decent read since the series’ greatest strength is that it follows all the normal wuxia recipes but doesn’t overplay it. While he’s arrogant he’s not intolerable. While he’s lustful he doesn’t often cross the line. While he’s strong, he has his limits and isn’t completely ruthless. The plot is also relatively simple and easy to follow and the writing style is decent. There is a lot of useless text on the attractiveness of women and for supporting characters to pander to the MC and be in shock of his OPness, but it's not as exaggerated as other series.
Spoiler

While most people prefer the light novel, I seem to prefer the manhua series. It’s true that the novel is better paced, given the extensive descriptions of the world, leveling up, treasures and how beautiful every woman he meets is, but it’s somewhat unnecessary and only serves as the background required given how rigid and complex power levels in the world are.

While the manga skims over the more boring aspects, and although there is a loss of information, it’s not essential to the plot line (just know he seems weaker but will still win the fight). However the main advantage of the manga is that XY’s personality is several times lighter and more likeable in the manga.

He’s still arrogant but part of it is humorous/mocking, and having visuals on the women is several times more enjoyable than having half the series describing how irresistible one part of their body is (sexy legs, snake like waist etc) and how much XY is holding back from ravaging them. So if you like the LN, it’s worth trying the manhua for a less pompous MC who gives off less of a r*pey feel.

Edit:

I had initially rated this novel highly, and quite frankly forgot about this review despite dropping the novel. Now that I found it, it's time for me to propose my updated views. The novel is quite boring, far too slow, and far too anticlimactic. It is foreshadowed and referenced at the beginning that the protagonist will take revenge against his fiance by displaying his strength after abandonment (a typical xianxia trope), but the actual revenge arc is one of the most boring things I have read. The fight is neither... more>> swift, nor is it slow, it is as though we are reading a basic fight that is just filler in a tournament arc. Honestly, completely terrible writing.

Even more tragic is the year this was written in (according to NU). For something written 3 years after Coiling Dragon and a lot of other novels, there is no originality, and the only enjoyment from this novel you will get is if you are new to reading Xianxia novels. I agree with @Clowred, the beginning was nice, but then again, that was due to its stereotypical nature where you could not go wrong. You can try it, but I don't think you will enjoy it. <<less

It is a very good story and I'm pretty sure that if the Xianxia genre had a source, this would be it. However, if one read other novels like ISSTH before this, then they won't like this. Except for the occasional mystery, the whole story is pretty linear and simple, except for some parts. It is definitely not for readers of "profound" novels.

So this story is pretty good for a Xianxai novel; although pacing is terrible and there is too much internal introspection for my taste. Still, its a story which I happily click on the chapter to read, even if that chapter frustrates me with nothing but an introspective dialogue about how x happens to his body...
