The translation quality after a certain point feels rushed and near the end just went utterly downhill.

Aside from that, what really killed it for me was the random power ups for everyone and their moms.
The author tried to give reasoning and explanations for the power ups but for the majority of the time it just felt forced.
Doesn't help that the power structure for this novel is pretty mediocre / random after a certain point.

The saving grace for this novel is the initial translation quality, the first few hundred... more>> chapters,
And the world building + unique concepts saved it from a 1/5 in my opinion. <<less

So I have read this up to chapter 780. Everything in this review is a spoiler, otherwise, I skipped past it all because I had enough.

You get to this part after Xiao Yan goes into retreat for a year with Zi Yan.

During that time, 3 factions decide to gang up on the Jia Ma Empire and the Yan Alliance, with Medusa, Hai Bo dong and the rest tirelessly fighting the 3 factions off. At the critical moment when they are about to be defeated. Xiao Yan shows up to save... more>> the day before they almost lose for the umpteenth time, and who turns up?

The leader of the 3 factions, his friend the fairy doctor who he met back at the beginning of the story who despite choosing to have a woeful poison body that can kill everyone around her, and promising him that they would still be friends decides to attack the faction that contains a black robed young man with literally the same name as her friend because she killed some people accidentally and became upset at her own choices. It's fine though, because Xiao Yan is here to save the day again, so she decides to join him and according to what happens through the fragments I've seen, she turns out fine and can then turn on or off this poison power at will.

On top of this is Mary Sue AKA Xiao Xun Er. She is descended of the Gu clan which has Dou Di blood and therefore the clan is blessed in some way that makes cultivation easier. Main Character also had a clan with Dou Di blood but for some reason they died, I couldn't care less what happened because it's only there to serve as a convenient barrier separating Mary Sue with Gary Stu. This was all hidden from both Xiao Yan and the reader until chapter 1100 since when I skipped to it.

People can be protective of who their family marries in these kinds of cultures, but this MC is a guy who was keeping up with Xue Er despite not having that blessed Dou Di blood, only le heavenly luck, was part of a clan that had a relationship with the Gu clan with a former Dou Di. He is a powerful alchemist and of course she loves him because of the most creepy and weird sounding stuff (why did they include that?).

At this point, it would be a good idea for them to think "Hold on, this guy is essentially Xue Er's bf, he's got heavenly flame, he's got a good cultivation speed that matches them with Dou Di blood (despite other people also being this fast, but only if they are with op), is a high tier alchemist despite being young and is able to get the jade piece we want for this guy's tomb if he doesn't have it already. Maybe him being in a relationship where we have everything to gain and nothing to lose would be a good idea." In the end, they meet in chapter 1100 when he is powerful enough to *know* what her clan is and that she tells him he has to be a dou zun in order to have the capability of talking to her clan. I don't know about you, but being surrounded by beautiful women and having the only one you love tell you that you literally need to become the most powerful existence alive in order to be able to be with her would make me turn around and walk away. Love is blind, but it's also not deaf and dumb.

But then that would require the plot would have to adapt. Unfortunately, this author has thought of 1 plot point and repeats it over and over again in an extremely unrealistic fashion. (Powerful sect/clan/whatever oppresses op MC who is only able to survive because of outside factors, he goes to train for a year and then pops out of nowhere at the last second for reasons unknown and beats them with lovey dovey girlfriend doing literally nothing to help despite being ultra powerful.)

I only managed to get to chapter 780 because that was when I started seeing repeated plot points, contrived stuff and dense to the point of s*upidity people becoming a trend.

The first arc is good, with the fight up to Yun Shan because it's the first arc and nothing is repeated. The Gu clan is a mystery and he really is too weak to get into that fight without any power protecting him and him not showing any potential means they would have no interest. The Hall of Souls is revealed in a good way that makes them a mysterious and oppressive force that lurks in the shadows to be revealed after Yao Chen gets taken by them giving a good goal to move on to. The reasoning behind being able to contend at the lowest level (because of Yao Chen being a proxy fighter through him) is perfectly realistic and understandable however the elder that tried to accuse him was a somewhat story driven point that was only there to advance the story unrealistically.

So to sum it up. The first arc was good, then it became terrible because the author couldn't come up with anything new to change the story, just change the name from Misty Cloud Sect to whoever else and you've got the same stuff happening. The harem is contrived and they ruined the Gu Clan thing.

TL;DR check the star rating, here's the story summary in about 2 minutes reading: http://battle-through-the-heavens. Wikia. Com/wiki/Spoilers <<less

Although the story itself is rather good, but the author writing style is boring anf tedious to read,

For example: repeat of expression of character and repeat of excessive female physical trait as is author spend most of the time to expand word count that makes his writing style very boring

After reading the latest chapters, I am truly starting to despise this novel. It fails on so many levels. I don't even know where to start. Everything in BTTH feels inconsistent.
The story: The author seems to cherry pick some cliches out of the xianxia genre despite doing no effort to build a decent stroy around them. For example: The MC is a transcender. And that's it. The information is provided somewhere in the beginning, but it does not have any influence on the plot whatsoever.

Writing: It is just terrible.... more>> The same information is repeated over and over again. Cultivation feels stale. Dangerous encounters are dragged out until all suspense is lost. Villains are one dimensional and brainless. MC also always comes at the perfect time to save the day. I have seen instances of ridiculous plot armor (*cough* ATG) but BTTH tops it all. Xiao Yan's luck is world defying (even for xianxia standards).

Spoiler

He literally gets dragged into hell by a heavenly flame on its home turf where he should be dead in 13 of 11 cases. But bullsh*t writing gets him a new body, a huge cultivation increase, a heavenly flame and he still gets a chick.

[collapse]

In some cases your brain cells might get fried by the insane amounts of s*upidity. ATTENTION: Huge spoiler.

Spoiler

At some point MC is willing to provide a nourishing pill for his own offspring. The baby will be a total badass if it gets to take the pill. And MC is still glorified for this decision by the mother of the offspring which he r*ped to get her pregnant in the first place and she even feels more in love with him.

[collapse]

The cultivation levels are highly inconsistent. At some point MC is able to fight highly above his own level with no sensible reason. Then he makes a major breakthrough and got weaker somehow. Suddenly he struggles even more against the level which he managed to beat even before the major power up.

Even with MC's bullsh*t luck and plot armor the author has no shame to still include characters that somehow manage to keep up or outpace Xiao Yan in cultivation speed. I mean how is this even slightly possible? He has an allknowing master pocketing him and providing him with best ressources. He literally jumps across levels by fortuitous encounters and he gets these advantages by going through hell. They can not be replicated.
Spoiler

But his ex-fiancée still manages to keep up somehow in her first reunion by staying in the sect while his childhood sweetheart completely leaves him in her shadow. Impossible? But plot...

[collapse]

Fighting: But the fighting takes it all. It is the worst of the worst. 80% of this novel is about lame RPG-fights that just feel slow and repetitive. Everyone is doing one hit and then taunting for the rest of the chapter instead of just finishing the opponent off. They are literally getting mad when enemies „dare“ to dodge a killing blow. And these people are supposed to be the cream of the crop. MC is literally charging his own attack for a whole freaking minute by standing still and being an easy target. But his opponents are just freezing up, getting shocked even though they should be able to get a kill in a splitt second or simply dodge it. Even worse: The fights are decided by these instances...

Final verdict: Terrible <<less

Its very generic and cliche but it is written pretty well. Though it has gotten repetitive after 600 chapters, I still enjoy it. The're parts that IMO should be changed though, for example I totally forgot this was a reincarnation story until I just read it in a review, it is a redundent part of the story upto this chapter and is useless; if I remember correctly the only significant thing about it was that it raised his spiritual force abit.

Battle Through The Heavens is one of the more superior titles among xianxia/xuanhuan genre. Despite drowning in plot armor, the Author still managed to make the MC hard work stands out. It's interesting how Tian Can Tu Dou properly portrayed the double-side of haughtiness, as shown in the MC personality. On one side, one's haughtiness will always invite troubles toward oneself; but on the other side, it also ensures that one will always have the drive needed to defeat his rivals and hike to the top.... more>> It is clearly not a good ideal to have in real life, but as far as the world of xianxia/xuanhuan, that was how legends are made. Many people want to be haughty, but the ones who can afford it is not that many. There is a need for luck, guidance, ethos, and hard work. The MC, as he is the MC, clearly is one of few that can stand at the top in the end, but his background is mediocre and his path is not smooth, like turtle dreaming of reaching the moon, how can he do that?

BTTH impressed me with its solid background and character. The plot was somewhat shaky at some points, but they almost always came back to the right path with surprising twist every now and then. It might be not a literary masterpiece by any count, but it is definitely one that could be granted five star among its genre. <<less

Spoiler

There are a few problems with the story, but there is a really solid plot to keep readers going.

Unlike many other novels where the problem that the MC faces keep getting bigger (ex. Revenges on father killer but then world plunges in way by invasion and MC joins war, w.e).

There is one main force that the MC is against the whole entire story and more and more about them were revealed as MC gets stronger and finds out more. This keeps the story pretty nicely together.

Also though MC appears to be really lucky he actually isn't as lucky as it would appear. A running theme in the story is something along the line of "Talent from bloodline and support from strong backers can help one get stronger, but ultimately the strongest depends on themselves and face countless death situations."

MC meets MANY people, even his two girls, that are strong because of bloodline (potential from previous strong people) and family support, and laments on it because he got nothing but some luck. To get strong he worked really hard and faced countless deaths. This is how he became the strongest in the end.

Really good theme if you ask me.

It's a very good series. It has the balance of being thorough and being exciting. The MC isnt like others who likes to take advantage of girls and have a harem of wives. The MC is pretty hard working and calm but can erupt if someone provoked the ones he love. I recommend this novel. This is good stuff.

WARNING THIS REVIEW IS VERY LONG (As the book itself is over 1, 600 chapters I decided to review it in 3 separate parts) If you're curious about whether or not reading this entire novel is worth it. Decide after reading this review. The story has very mixed reviews for a reason and I'm here to help you figure it out.

BTTH is a very interesting novel, mostly because of the fantastic world building. I'd say that out of all the harem novels I've read, which are few and far between,... more>> this would have to be my favorite so far. I like Xiao Yan and I like a lot of the female leads. The author so far has made it clear that Xiao Yan will not have only one female love interest and that's fine with me so long as the main male lead is interesting enough to have these women all over him. Xiao Yan is someone that I can believe it makes sense for these women to be all over him. He's good natured and kind to those that he loves and he protects those he cares about to the grave. He's not overly fanatical, obsessive, nasty, or bad natured. He's cool headed, rational, and he's good looking.

I wouldn't say that there aren't flaws in this series. Of course there are. Xiao Yan is vey lucky, as has been stated over and over again in these reviews. There are times where he will find items, medicinal ingredients, and etc. That people have been searching for all of their lives in a short period of time. He has a teacher that is extremely overpowered that takes over his body anytime that Xiao Yan himself can't get out of a situation on his own. Things like that, however, the way that this world is built makes that sense of luck actually quite realistic. In this world, the strong dominates and luck is a huge and necessary trait you need to have to get stronger and the weak and the unlucky tend to fail and get slighted. People who have been training for years can sometimes only get to be level three Da Dou Shi while extremely talented teenagers can become level 7 to 8 Da Dou Shi's or even stronger. For example, Xun Er also has incredible luck and has abilities and items that a lot of old men who've been training for years would want too. Xiao Yan isn't the only one in the world that this extreme luck and strength happens to. Xiao Yan might be lucky but in the world that this story is in stuff like this happens. It just makes it interesting to see what situation Xiao Yan might get himself into next.

Now as I'm not even halfway through with this novel, I know I haven't gotten to the Medusa part that turns off a lot of people from this series. I know what's going to happen but I haven't read it myself yet and so I know that I can't say anything about it until I do. One thing I know though is that Medusa and Xiao Yan are very interesting characters and so I would like to see how exactly a situation so out of character for the both of them was written into the story. If I find that it puts me off the series for good, I will continue this review and discuss more about it in detail. For now though, I've decided to give this story a solid 4 out of 5.

UPDATE: As I continue to get it deeper into this story I've decided to debunk some common misconceptions about this novel. Firstly, people seem to believe that the author has made Xiao Yan some kind of hero of justice who's been wronged and has to carry out his vengeance on everyone. That is not the case. Xiao Yan is consistently selfish. It's part of who he is, he cares about the people he loves deeply and he tries to protect them BUT if you are not a part of the group he loves and admires he couldn't care less about what happens to you. He has responsibilities and duties and people that he has to take care of and so to get stronger, he doesn't mind breaking the law, stealing from people, or even killing people.

Secondly, The whole entire reason he was upset that his engagement was broken off had nothing to do with having feelings for Yanran or that 'promises should be kept' it's because she embarrassed his family in public. If she had broken it off discreetly in a conversation between him and her as well as Xiao Yan's father, he definitely wouldn't have made the three year bet and a lot of the issues that came with it.
Spoiler

Her clan ends up teaming up with the hall of souls and hunting down his entire clan and making him lose his own father, all because he won against Yanran and they had a grudge (the audacity of sore losers these days).

[collapse]
He doesn't have a problem with people breaking off engagements at all as we end up seeing later in the story with Yun Yun. He went to their wedding and he made a bet with the guy she was engaged to and since he lost they broke off the engagement fairly with no shame being put to either Xiao Yan's family, to the guy she was going to marry, or even Yun Yun.

Thirdly, the r*pe scene with Medusa and Xiao Yan was actually done well. They don't go into explicit details. They don't make it seem like the occasion was nothing or harmless. They don't try to play it off as if it never happened. INSTEAD, what they do is they make a point to explain how the situation that occurred effected their mentality and state of being. They make it a point to expose how even though the r*pe was something out of control because of the flame, it's still a horrible tragedy. Xiao Yan couldn't control himself because of the flame and he talks about how he felt violated as well because of that. It's a very harsh topic matter and when done badly it can be incredibly offensive and revolting. However, that doesn't mean that people aren't allowed to write about it. It happens in real life and sometimes, fictitious or not, writing about situation like that makes it easier to help a person who's dealing with something similar.

This is a harem novel but it's one of the most tactful I've ever read so far. Xiao Yan isn't attracted to all of the women he comes across and although most are attracted to him, he stays away. He's honest about how he feels for them and he expresses himself and his emotions as much as he can. His relationship with Medusa is proof of this fact. If he wasn't as honest with her as he was and if he didn't work as hard as he did to protect everyone he could, they would never have gotten to the point they're at now. Especially after what happened between them, since he was open and honest about what happened they both got a sense of peace with the horrible event. I think they both end up scarred from it but they move past it as time goes on as they build a more intimate relationship. They care for each other in a way I never got to see from him until now. She's definitely stronger than him and he respects that strength but he also want to protect her and it's so sweet. Sine I'm enjoying myself, I will be keeping this novel at 4/5. Once I finish the novel, I will come back with another update to see if I will be changing the score or if it falls off at any point.

2ND UPDATE

After reading this story for so long I finally understand why exactly I love Xiao Yan's character so much. It's because despite his overwhelming strength and willpower, he spends almost the entirety of the novel weaker than all his love interests. He never gives up his quest to be stronger because if he doesn't the people he's in love with and the people he loves won't be safe if he doesn't. I'm used to overpowered characters in novels, manga, and etc. And I thought that while reading this novel I'd be able to look at him and say wow this guy is overpowered but I'm over halfway through and although he is incredibly strong, especially for his age, he's really not. There are 1'648 chapters in this novel and I'm more than halfway through and he has battles with enemies that have actual stakes. He could die while battling them and yet he still survives and although it's not shocking, it's impressive and speaks to his character. Once I finish the novel, I'll finish this review but I thought I needed to add this before I get any further. Especially since I know he'll eventually grow stronger than everyone I want everyone to know that the journey is long and it makes sense. He's never suddenly more powerful than everyone, it takes time and that makes it much more interesting.

LAST UPDATE:

I've finally completed the novel. It was a very wild ride and I enjoyed every minute of it. Although, of course this series isn't a masterpiece, I'd stay it's still an amazing novel. Watching this man go through hell and back to protect his family and to have all of his hard work rewarded was a wonderful thing to experience. He spent almost the entirety of the novel struggling to gain power to defeat his odds and he only becomes truly powerful around the end. Every loose end was tied in a little bow and it felt very satisfying to read. By the end of the story there aren't any more questions or plot holes, just a completed and well thought out story. If there was anything that I'd change or that I didn't like about the story, it would be the end game relationships but even those make sense. It makes sense that he didn't end up with Yun Yun despite the fact that they loved each other. They were entirely different people with much different goals and lives. It just wouldn't work. I would've loved if he had only ended up with Cai Lin (Medusa) but if he abandoned Xun Er for Cai Lin then the fact that he spent so much time trying to become worthy of Xun Er just to abandon that for a woman he's growing feelings for recently, would make him an a**hole. Even though I prefer monogamous relationships, I'm happy that these they're all a happy family. I wish that I could've gotten to see Xiao Yan interact with his children so much more than what we got but at the end of the day I still am not complaining. The man was busy protecting them all. When everything finally calmed down he was able to finally just be a dad and I'm really happy for him. I think when people talk about this series and how they don't like it because things don't make sense, it drags on too long, they don't like the ships, those opinions are valid. This story is over 1, 600 chapters. Everything makes sense in the end and not a chapter is wasted. I don't think it drags on for too long at all, this story wouldn't be the same if it was shorter. HOWEVER, anyone who decided that they don't want to finish it because they realize it's sort of a harem and it has too many chapter and they don't like the characters, has a right to that opinion. This story is obviously not for everyone. For people who are simply curious and want to know if reading all of this is worth it, it is. If you want to stop reading though because it's just not your thing, that's perfectly fine. At the end of the day though, the author made an amazing novel and I admire their hard work. Check it out and see whether or not it's your thing. Simple as that. <<less

aaahhhh how do I start this....I guess I can conclude the whole story in 3 points without spoilers

  1. The MC is luckier than a 3 leaf clover and I mean literally... this should not happen even though the MC is supposed to be really lucky... there should have been a few moments where the MC didn't get his targeted treasure and had to go for an alternative route cus it got extremely boring after the first 400 chapters, I already knew the MC was gonna succeed in getting what he wants and I was never proven wrong.
  2. The author is a simp and has a weird r*pe fetish? I don't even know how to describe it but I have read another light novel by the same author and it also had the same type of r*pe scenes and the same type of sh*t relationship development. Every single f*cking whamen in the novel is a beauty like literally, no one is ugly or normal looking and every single one of these whamen just falls for the MC by just "looking at his skinny shoulders that could carry the whole world on them". None of these girls have a character development then again no male character has a decent character development either but they have personalities.... none of the MCs b*tches have a personality and that includes every one of them. It's surprising that the author makes both the girl called yanran and the MC look s*upid at the start... like who goes on to cancel an engagement in public and make fun of your ex for nothing? like do it in private jeeez... then the MC can't handle the humiliation and goes on his revenge... bruh we get it she was being a bit*h about it but there is no need to get revenge just move on dude. Then we have the MC peeping at b*tches at the age of 10? like bruh someone needs to check if this guy has overdosed on testosterone... plus we had some Alabama-type sh*t going on between that. I had read some people saying that the MC had a habit of observing every women's assets for a long time which is kinda false cus it was not a long time more like a few seconds. I don't really have a problem with it cus every guy does that but then it leads to every woman noticing that he just looked at her "assets" when they shouldn't have been able to and then falling in love with him. There weren't any powerful female characters just like most tv shows/anime/light novels/manga... all the female characters just magically relied on dou qi/magic and their gifted resources to become powerful which doesn't indicate strength, anyone can do that even an idiot. I don't why people do not understand that you can just cut off the pen*s of a powerful guy and call it a powerful female... you gotta make a new character for that type of thing...I don't really blame the author for this cus I have only seen a few movies/tv-shows where I saw a powerful female mc/character the rest of them who advertise one don't really have one...A powerful character is someone who gets back on their feet even when they are at their worst, not someone who can make their own choices... anyone can make their own choices no skill is involved in that and most of the time you cant really make your own choices anyways...

  3. Anyways I didn't start reading this novel for the relationships, instead, it was for the action and training arcs. The action/fight scenes can be best described as lacking or completely shit. The whole novel had the same type of fights and the same sound effects... the only sound effect that the author used was "BAM" or "BANG" and the fights would always have 2 parties fighting and the MC would intervene at the last second. The last big fight was no exception. It cant be described as the last big fight instead people should call it the same fight that happened at the start of the novel but everything that was taking place was increased in size. anyways after the fight we got an ending that made me even more confused than I was at the start... the author is clearly not gonna write a second part for BTTH but the ending was terrible and could have been a little more conclusive... the author exposed the reader to even more confusing shit... if the author had actually explained the world a little better in the previous chapters instead of wasting them on pointless sh*t then the ending could be passable but at the end of the day, we were left with a pile of junk that you just wanna read to see what the ending is...

At first I didnt believe the reviews, but after reading through this novel, I have to say the author seems to have a problem with padding literarly every chapter.

The descriptions are long-winded and overdone, the fights are mostly boring, and even the cultivation isnt that interesting.

Worst yet, the author seems to hate his audience.
Spoiler

Early on in the novel, the 3 year arragement is established. 303 chapters in, it still hasnt happened. Worse yet, around chapter 270-280, theres about 13 days left till the day theyre supposed to meet. I did a little research, and only on chapter 334 does it happen. 50 chapters for 13 f*cking days! Because the author just keeps popping up with random subplots that didnt exists five minutes ago!

Maybe in the future I might come back to this. But oh boy have I lost my patience.

Battle through the Heavens is a very generic novel with nothing much original in its plot. I understand that this novel is like an ancestor of cultivation novels, so I don't mind all the cliches because many of them probably came from this novel.

But the fact is that this novel is bad. The characters, the plot, the writing, the story, the MC, the overabundance of women, the Alchemy, the r*pe scene that ruins one woman's character...

Let's first take a look at the good parts:

... more>> - the world building is good

- Nothing else

And now the bad parts:

- The main story is extremely simplistic

MC was a guy reincarnated from our world (you better ignore this fact if you want to like the MC), first he's a genius, then he loses his qi, then his fiance breaks up the marriage which insults his and his father's face, then MC gets a ghost teacher, que a training arc, MC beats up his fiance and breaks the engagement so that he doesn't lose face, oh no the sect is evil, que a training arc, MC destroys evil sect. This was the most solid arc in the novel, the author knew what he wanted and he did it. But after that, it's like he lost his goal.

From that point on everything revolves around MC needing to save his teacher from the Soul Hall (oh yeah his dad as well, but he'll be forgotten for about 1500 chaps) and become strong so that he can marry the woman he loves who is from a big OP clan.

The problem is, the Soul Hall aren't actually the big bads, instead they're lackeys of the true big bad which is just some dude who wants to be god. That's it really. MC has no conflict with the big bad apart from "oh you imprisoned my dad, buhuu, now you have to die because face and revenge and blah blah"

Apart from that, they're only in conflict because the big bad is standing in MC's way to marrying the woman he loves.

The big bad is also an enemy of MC's clan from the distant past, but what does that got to with MC? He only cares about face and women.

[collapse]

- Now that we're on the topic of Soul Hall, every time MC comes across a Soul Hall member, he'll either chase him away with his tail between his legs, or kill him. What were once interesting villains that were a real threat to MC devolved into f*cking Team Rocket that just keep coming back over and over.

- The characters: the worst part of the novel. Every male character is a sh*t for brains h**ny monkey whose only purpose for existing is so that MC can slaughter sects. Either that or they're useless bootlickers that praise MC to high heaven. There exists no grey area in this novel; every character is black or white, no in between. There's also the peanut gallery, so that means a lot of skipped chapters

- The fights/conflicts: Jesus Christ this is so boring! Every conflict revolves around women, the moment a woman comes in everyone's IQ drops into negatives and they fight. Every enemy spends at least a chapter and a half gloating about his sect, his family, his talent, his looks, his height, his d*ck and so on...

The fights are terrible and completely nonsensical
Spoiler

Just like every CN novel, the difference between realms are like heaven and earth... Except they're not.

Author will say a lot of cool things about realms like "controlling the natural energy to fight", "breaking space", "destroying mountains with a wave of a hand" etc. but when MC fights someone it just devolves into "he attacked", "he blocked", "he struck", "he swung his sword" etc.

Where did all the cool sh*t go? It's like I'm watching boxing.

Also, you'll realize that realms aren't so far apart as you might think. In the first chapters, you'll see a Dou Huang fight eight Dou Wangs. Logic dictates that a Dou Huang will one shot them with a single attack. Except, a Dou Huang loses. SHE LOSES!!! She didn't kill even a single Dou Wang and lost!

What the f*ck is this bullshit?! You'll see this throughout the novel and it makes me angry. It's like author just constantly nerfes characters for no reason. And then he gives s*upid explanations later. I don't care what star they were, a Dou Huang should be able to one shot any Dou Wang regardless of star level!

[collapse]

- The writing: It's consistent in its inconsistency. The power creep is especially terribly written.
Spoiler

Everyone keeps saying about how Dou Huangs are so rare that even on the entire continent they're seen as powerful masters, yet when MC becomes a Dou Huang, suddenly every Tom, d*ck and Harry are Dou Huangs while all elders are Dou Zongs and Dou Zuns.

In weak areas that only had a couple of Dou Huangs you'll just suddenly see an OP Dou Zun come out of nowhere to fight MC. It's the most random of shit...

The worst part is how everyone says that it's unknown if there exists even a single Dou Sheng in the world, but by the end there's like a sh*t load of Dou Shengs, even his wife's father is a Dou Sheng...

Author will constantly explain something for paragraphs on end just to contradict that the next paragraph, so just skip any explanations. It's pointless.

[collapse]

- Jia Nan Academy arc
Spoiler

The worst arc out of all. Boring as shit, MC gets challenged and insulted by ignorant brats, face slapping, MC creates a useless faction that falls apart the moment he goes to the bathroom, h**ny monkeys jealous of MC, useless elders that can't protect the academy for shit, plot armor... I warmly suggest you skip this one. The only thing you need to know is that MC joined cause he wanted to find a heavenly flame, r*pes Medusa, gets flame, THE END

[collapse]

- The women:
Spoiler

The triggering part is how every woman has long black hair, black eyes and corpse-like skin. They legit all look the same, heck even Xiao Yan has long black hair and black eyes!!!! It makes it seem like in*est when you think about it.

There are a lot of women in this story, but surprisingly MC married only two, the woman he loves and the woman he r*ped. The first one is a bit creepy because MC is reincarnated (you'll see) but the second one is just forced.

Medusa is a very arrogant, haughty woman that stayed by MC's side unwillingly for a long time, seeing his growth for herself. Their relationship slowly grew, and if they married it would be natural. Except the author f*cked up. He threw them into a death zone and pulled out the thickest plot armor known to man to save them, only to then make MC r*pe her under an aphrodisiac. And after that, she falls in love with him and is content with sharing him with the other wife? WTF author?! The entire character thrown to the garbage bin just like that. And she was my favorite character... f*ck you

[collapse]

- The plot: slow as a dead snail for 650 chapters, then the author suddenly started rushing the story because the MC was always at a same realm for hundreds of chapters doing meaningless side quests because of women. MC even skips one cultivation realm altogether because the author had to rush the story and finally end it. If not, this novel would've probably been over 3000+ chapters.

- The MC:
Spoiler

Xiao Yan is a hypocritical self-centered idiot with so much luck his enemies might as well die from a heart attack in the middle of battle. His luck is so insane that he finds the most rarest sh*t just dropping from the sky in front of him, sometimes literally.

Oh and he's also a pe*ophile. You see, the FL, the woman he loves, comes from an OP clan that sent her to his clan to gather a token and to rest because she was under the strain of transplanting a Heavenly Flame into her body. MC, a reincarnated adult, sneaks into her room at night so that he can grope her body. FL mistakes s*xual assault as a boy trying to ease her pain, and falls in love with him over the years. Dear lord, this is almost Yun Che levels of disgusting... How the hell am I supposed to root for this? It would've been better if MC wasn't reincarnated.

[collapse]

- Alchemy: the most uninteresting, boring, dull, soulless alchemy I have ever read. I ended up just skipping over 10+ chapters of boring explanations with no hype at all. If you want good Alchemy, go read Martial Peak and A Will Eternal, not this shit.

In the end, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, not unless I had a grudge with them and wanted to waste their time. I suggest you read the manhua instead, it has 300 chapters that basically removed most of the pointless side quests and left the main story, there's also some genuinely good comedy. Just avoid the novel. <<less

Here's some advice: Don't read anything by Tian Can Tu Dou. Whatever motive he has behind writing these tr*sh novels, they are just terrible to read. The only story he wrote that is somewhat better than the others is The Great Ruler. But even then, I recommend trying a different author.

As always, xianxia cultivation gente isn’t know for exceptional histories, so any high expectation will only lead to frustration.

BTTH can’t be labeled as good or bad, the writing is ok, some words spelled wrong here and there, but nothing that good sense can’t translate (and that’s on account of the translator, not author).

However, the novel is pratically the epitome of some clichés. I can’t remember how much s*upid and out of context phrases of “this is something beteeen me/my clan/my sect/my valley and him/she/he, don’t interfete...”, one time ok, some... more>> times is boring, but all the times and even in some s*upid moments... difficult to endure.

Another point is the insuferable “don’t kill me or my sect/clan/father/cousin/dog will maie you suffer...” hell, the most hated enemy of MC said that to him after he f*cked MC a lot. Totally out of context.

Overall the novel somehow bend the world to adapt to MC instead of adapt the MC to the world. Heavenly flames this and that... i’m in chapter 1.105 and even now I don’t know the set of elements used by the novel (five elements fire, water, earth, wood and metal Or four elements fire, water, earth and wind), it was never explained, after all only fire (MC affinity), and to the hell with the rest. It’s to the point that everything that randomly appear is fire oriented, and when it isn’t there’s a excuse why MC can substitute other elements with his special flames for one reason or another.

it’s readeable, but nothing more. <<less

If you are looking for a good novel to read, this ain't it. If you are looking for a novel to waste your time cause you have absolutely nothing else you could be doing, go find a different novel to read. If this doesn't stop you, then I am not sure what will.

BTTH starts off interesting, with a declined clan and a genius who fell and declined for 3 years before a 'reawakening'/opportunity appears to reverse the situation. After his finance comes to nullify his engagement due to his declining... more>> status, he finds a teacher who trains him and sets off the journey.

Sounds kind of interesting right? Thats about where it goes... the rest of the novel is pointless training arcs, garbage writing made to lengthen the chapter length (example paragraphs of audience reactions, or 70% of a chapter being about how MC's friends are losing a fight and then at the end of the chapter MC comes in to save the day... this filler sh*t happens all the damn time, you basically have to skip paragraphs while reading cause it hurts reading so much repetition).

MC's harem literally is too good. Hes got at least 6 that I can remember after finishing:

Spoiler

Xun Er, Yun Yun, Nalan Yanran, Little Fairy Doctor, Cai Lin/Medusa, Qing Lin (kind of), Zi Yan (??), Ya Fei (kind of)

And many more who are introduced in small one time arcs but end up falling in love with the MC even though they literally meet/only interact for less than 3 days.

[collapse]

Half the reason the harem exists is cause theres like no other male character the MC has near his age until at least the academy arc, and after that theres like never any consistent male character near his age. Hes almost always surrounded by at least one of his harem girls after the first few arcs, and they only exist to bring disaster/conflict so the author can introduce a pointless fight... The girls are all peerless beauties who more or less end up simping for the MC at some point, and are all extremely unusually powerful or have some other garbage power/bloodline/heritage that keeps their power levels near the MC so they can stay semi-relevant. They basically exist to cause conflict so that a fight can start due to their 'jade skin and beauty surpassing all other females the MC has ever seen'... MC will walk into a new town with a female and you can bet your ass that at least 3 people (whether they be arrogant young masters or something) will get triggered to see MC walking with a beauty. The author will then spend nearly a chapter-length of useless talk/waste fighting/probing before the MC finally decides to act and then one hit K.O. said person, only to invoke the other person's elder/sect/faction/friends who cause even more conflict. And the cycle continues.

MC's luck so ridiculous, I can only best describe it like this: Imagine that there is a once-in-a-millennial lottery coming up, with the odds of winning a lambo at 1/5, 000, 000. Then, you end up miraculously winning which should give you a lambo, except after winning the lambo you discover its not actually a lambo but instead it's an Ancient Jade-White Nine-Coloured Heavenly Lambo of Mystically Burning Ignition And Quantumally Divine Nitro. This extremely rare event likely occured because the lambo acutally titanforged with Best-in-Slot stats and a socket (sorry, WoW reference) thats extremely suitable for the MC. And the odds up of it upgrading from a regular lambo to this seldomly seen Heavenly Lambo were 1/2.5 billion, but perhaps the MC was fated to get such a Lambo. But don't you worry, everything is balanced cause there is a monster/enemy guarding it. Oh wait, MC will more or less always play the fisherman and have his enemy fight the monster and conveniently snatch the keys to the heavenly lambo and ride away to victory, causing endless amounts of Elders to curse at this brat and spurt blood.

One thing I did like though, was that the MC's abilities/power were kind of consistent throughout the novel in that he always relied on techniques based on heavenly flames, and even with his signature attack. Although he got other techniques too, his heavenly flames abilities were always there and powered up with him throughout the novel, and was a good excuse for him to own at pill refining.

Back to another annoying part of the story:

Spoiler

Why the f*ck does no one ever decide to mention that his clan used to be super elite or that Xun Er's clan is still super elite? Their clans Gu/Xiao used to be allies/had an alliance and yet aside from Xun Er hanging out with them, they basically do nothing. And literally everytime the Hall of Souls/Hun Clan interacted with the MC (especially after his father was kidnapped), how could they have not known that the MC was the current clan lead and in possession of the Tou She jade token? They killed so many of his clan members yet every time they went after the MC, they send some tr*sh protectors/elders whose strength are not too close to the MC.

Especially when you think that every time they fought, the MC's strength was literally breaking records and growing exponentially. He literally had the token which the Hun clan would send their top Dou Sheng class experts to acquire from the other clans, yet despite being aware that the Xiao clan has the token, they send tr*sh barely stronger than the MC.

Maybe I'm just ranting too much or my brains rotting after finishing this.

[collapse]

MC has so much luck you would think his opponents would accidentally trip over a rock and impale themselves, or accidentally sneeze too forcefully causing their blood vessels to explode. Why do his enemies still call him a brat even after he comes much stronger than him?

2/5. Quarantine left me with not much to do but I definitely could have done something else instead of binge-reading this slog of incoherently written, hot-garbage novel. I am going insane seeing the word "refine" over and over again. <<less

500 chapters in...

The Good:

- somewhat unique cultivation which the author goes out of his way to try to explain

- endearing interactions & story between MC and fMC, as well as with other women/ potential harem members. In general, the women have their own personalities.

- MC is ruthless to his enemies, throughout the first 500 chapters, the majority of the time he's consistent in this and doesn't discriminate based off gender when it comes to fighting for the first several hundred chapters.

- fairly decent world building,

Spoiler

confusing at times due to authors inconsistent story about actual distances, and in one significant part he fails to mention a place of interest is actually outside of the empire MC starts in, this causes confusion as a reader, but knowing this now should not spoil anything.

[collapse]

several well developed, emotion inducing, despicable enemies

love interests you actually root for,

and contemptible thots that you learn to hate and are satisfied with how they get what they deserve. So far, very little thot-armor.

The bad:

- authors math skills, regarding time, distance and even simple math... just ignore it

- plot holes and severe inconsistencies, illogical choices portrayed as "logical" once even claimed as common sense that's completely nonsense just to push plot. And silly decisions MC makes because authors intellect dropped.

Spoiler

one of the most aggravating things is how much time. MC has to take to acquire resources&funds, constantly finding himself broke, even though he's killing high level experts left and right, the ret*rd NEVER gets a single gold coin from these high level experts. In one case the person he killed was throwing millions of gold coins around in an auction, only to be killed outside of town by MC, who goes throug his spatial ring, ignores millions of coin and who-knows- what- else just to get two items, then leaves.

The very next chapter he's complaining about being broke. Utter nonsense

[collapse]

- the r*pe tag, as of yet I haven't read actual r*pe but am worried it will ruin the series for me.

- blatant discrimination against women. I can't stand feminists, but I have almost the same amount of disgust for chauvinists. The author is heavily sexist a few hundred chapters in and its starting to wear on my nerves.

Over all it shouldn't be rated more than a 3, but out of all the CN's I've read it's probably in the top 10 so far and worth atleast giving a try IMO <<less

This novel was good in the beginning. The plot wasn't totally unique but IMO it was still executed well, at least in the beginning. Sadly, the novel turns into filler in the last 400 or so chapters with the same plot repeating multiple times ... more>>
Spoiler

The MC literally powers up after every single invasion and emerges just in time to foil it

[collapse]
and this turns the rest of the novel into a slog; the author really dropped the ball on these last few chapters. In addition, I found the character development for all but a few of the characters to be really lacking, which only contributes to the numbness I felt for the later parts of the story.

Overall, I think the novel is deserving of it's (current) 3.9 star rating. Still, this novel is worth reading if you don't have any other reading material. It's not terrible, but it's just not the best xuanhuan out there (especially when compared to works like ISSTH or CD). Despite this, the novel still has its (relatively sparse) moments, and is, once again, still worth a shot if you've got nothing else to read. <<less

Pretty entertaining cultivation novel. Nothing too original though. MC plot armor is about as thick as it can get especially later in the novel with stuff "coincidentally" happening at the right moment and the author just making up new things out of the blue as he pleases for the story to progress "smoothly" as the story progresses. Still not completely bad cultivation novel imo and I have read quite a few of them at this point though I can't be called an expert.

... and lets not forget characters face getting... more>> solemn -> getting gradually more solemn -> extremely solemn -> etc. in the duration of one chapter while facing an opponent that is not easy to deal with -> as expected is not easy to deal with -> is truly not easy to deal with after a couple of exchanges.

If you can get past this kind of writing in your mind and enjoy reading cultivation novel I would recommend this to you <<less

At first when I tried reading this novel I had a hard time because of the cultivation level being to many and still in chinese so I got bored and drop it. But when I heard it is already finished I tried reading again because I find this novel having some potential, as I go through the chapters one thing I find and the one thing I hate in this novel the most is almost all the girls same age as him are op, always skipping some cultivation lvl exaggeratedly.... more>> Like its a stroll in the park, Due to the constitutions that appears in the girls "ONLY", and mysteriously no same age males are blessed with constitutions. Heck not even the old people have this constitutions. Even mc's same age male friends are all crappy and lame and no constitution heck even the MC himself! And while MC is consuming 1 full chapter to breakthrough he still ends up being inferior to the girls around him Instead of catching up they level up some more lol. And even some of the random girls he meet are usually at the top of their faction like the pavillions, valleys, academy, empire, desert, beast clans, clans. Heck even the servant. My god are the males in this novel some idiots that all of them are inferior to the girls in the whole continent besides the old guys and MC himself atleast MC can cope up and whats more the young generation males even have the guts to look down on people talk about lame they can't even surpass the girls in their factions, and whats more most of the people there only see the MC in the limelight while usually the one fighting the strongest enemy is the female companion of MC who even acts as his bodyguard. Talk about bias, And usually the female companion belittles him telling him like "he's too strong i'll fight him in your stead" because of the cultivation lvl of the MC is too low. Even though he has more ways to fight. And the girl already knows he have trump cards still ends her suggesting fighting the enemy first. Which in turn pisses me of to the point I wanna throw my phone. Kinda sad for MC needing protection of the girls than protecting them the other way around. All in all im frustrated with the too much girl power in this novel. Being balance is much more better than more girl power or too much "bromance" cause of the lack of powerful girls.

And I forgot to add the battle are kinda lame I dont feel the immersion like what I feel in atg, mga, issth where the battle gets you hooked. Heck chaotic sword god is much better at making battles lol. But still there are some points that are still good. Like heavenly flames. Makes you curious what color is next hahaha. So if you ask me about my evaluation its below avg. It is a good past time read considering its already finished and completely translated. Thumbs up to the translator for the effort and thumbs down to the author for the too much girl power <<less
