Koushun Takami’s notorious high-octane thriller envisions a nightmare scenario: a class of junior high school students is taken to a deserted island where, as part of a ruthless authoritarian program, they are provided arms and forced to kill until only one survivor is left standing. Criticized as violet exploitation when first published in Japan—where it became a runaway best seller—Battle Royale is a Lord of the Flies for the 21st century, a potent allegory of what it means to be young and (barely) alive in a dog-eat-dog world.

Read the official english translation a couple of years ago.

Its similarities to The Hunger Games has been talked about by many others, so I shall skip that. But both stories, even with a similar premise, evoke very different emotions and both are worth reading for different reasons. Where Battle Royale shines is that it shows a very realistic depiction of the thought processes and feelings of a group of students who are thrown into an arena to fight for their lives.

Their dialogue and their introspection was beautifully portrayed.

The author does... more>> not shy away from gore or the horror.

Very memorable & worth a read. <<less
