The villager who was so poor that he couldn’t afford a bride price, did not learn to do anything, and was idle, actually got a beautiful and rich wife from the city!

The beautiful and rich Bai (white) Fu (rich) Mei (beautiful), Zhao Lanxiang was reborn, and the first thing she did when she woke up was to find her husband in a hurry.

In their last life, they met each other in their later years, he had suffered through the ups and downs in life, and she was scarred. They warmed and healed each other in their remaining years.

In this life, she decided to give this man a good beginning, help him avoid the hidden arrows, and walk onto the bright road!

However… who could tell her why her steady, refined husband is actually such a cold, fierce, and th**ny bully as a young man?

The rough man impatiently pressed the Bai Fumei into the cornfield, patted her tender face, and said fiercely: “You know, you can’t run away if you mess with me again.”

Porridge novel. Recc if you in the mood to destress or just, generally don't really feel like going all in. Very much a slice of life.

The overall flow is good, but I really don't understand why we were just given a 4y time skip in the end, and switched from MC POV completely, not being shown a smidge of what went down and only seeing a hand full of sentences from the ML about those years, who was very much outside of the plot at that time. So it basically... more>> was conducting the story in a place the readers had no access to, only telling us 'oh yeah, the story is over there but due to some unavoidable circumstance u're being shown this paint dry over here'.

As for the characters, their description was pretty great, but their presence was sorta lacking all in all, they were shown off in front of us and then we were given no info about their circumstance after at all. Would've been better to include some stories in the extras. There's also the problem of ML's little sister, who is basically a ghost tbo. She is only every mentioned when it's time to eat, and genuinely feels like some sort of specter in the family.
Spoiler

When talking about the way the grandma does nothing, she basically ignores the youngest granddaughter when she taught both of the older grandchildren, yet it's presented in a strange way of her regretting not being able to teach the eldest bcs of her lack of hearing and thus wanting grandchildren she could teach. The eldest one has quite a bit of focus on her, which I like, but it only makes the younger ones lack of substance weird and makes a person wonder why she was even written in. Then going into the alternate life timeline, she isn't even mentioned once, as if a person who doesn't exist, makes you wonder if the author sorta forgot about her, which is somewhat laughable confirmed when every character says gb in the final AN except for her.

[collapse]

When talking about the small things, sorta like, uk this person doesn't understand how some things work, like thinking a bike is gonna rot after 5y..... liikkeee, nooooo, bikes won't fall apart after 5y what is that about. Also, tea plant needs moisture and loves rainy places, so having tea plants is more of an area specialty bcs of that, and not like, an after thought. There's def a rsn certain agriculture products are tied to certain locations, and it's not that ppl don't like consuming them in that area.... Also the use of raw feces in planting.... no.

This is sorta iritating when seen but it's common enough for us all to be used to it. Like, MC magically being extremely soft handed, smooth skinned, seen as week overall yet doing all the cooking, washes clothes by hand, does some other work, don't really sleep that much bcs of chasing money. Esp funny when she's being labeled as a person who doesn't touch water, when she spends her day with hands in water to her elbows.... It sorta presents this work as not difficult and very easy, when it's anything but. This is repeated in the entirety of the novel and then in the extra regarded as especially hard by the scum ex. Tbo it can't work both ways, you have to be consistent with the presentation of your viewpoint. Makes a person more annoyed when it's like this. The other thing is mentioning non het in one sentence as like, unavoidable bcs a person did not marry bfr 30.... as always a take.

Talking about extras, wasn't very interested in the kids tbo, felt it'd be better to give us some stories of the side charas. Esp don't understand why, if you already decided on doing the kids, you mess up with the son's chara presentation,
Spoiler

who was described as mostly non verbal and thus a point of fear for the MC, who was scared he might be neurodivergent or 'lacking' something

[collapse]
but when actually shown on screen not even similar to the prior description. Mild ableism esp in the form equating neurodivergence as lack of IQ and educational capability.

All in all a good enough read with some points of annoyance. <<less

It made me feel like I also grew up with them... like they were my parents and I was watching their love story. Add to the fact that I and my boyfriend have similar personalities to the FL and ML, I really enjoyed reading the novel more than I expected.

Both leads weren't OP and they struggled and had their own ups and downs in life. All of the characters around the leads were reasonable (even the second male lead villain, with the exception of that rapist) and were properly fleshed... more>> out, making them seem more alive. No one was truly good and no one was also truly evil (except that one character). The novel was written so well and the plot twist, in the end, made everything make sense.
Spoiler

TLDR; FL after her death reborn back to her teens and went to ML. They got together. After death due to old age, ML woke up to the time he was released in prison. He helped FL move on from her ex-husband and married her. Then, that was the reason FL looked for him in the next life. Basically, it was a loop.

[collapse]

FL in her past life was passionate and blindly chased after the second ML (her ex-husband). She ended up divorcing him after 11/16 years (?)
Spoiler

because her love for him died when she suffered a second miscarriage caused by the second ML's first love.

[collapse]

ML was more of a lone wolf on the outside but a little milk dog on the inside. He was wild, a bit harsh on his words, and incredibly cunning. Just as I said, ML really reminded me of my bf/future hubby uwu. They're very attentive and caring as partners and just irresistible and insatiable when it comes to intimacy. Their love is passionate to the extreme, incredibly loyal, and unimaginably deep. I do hope our love will also last as long as the leads' love, too.
Spoiler

ML did fall for FL at first sight, but since it really was just almost impossible for a rich lady from the city to fall in love with him who was a poor boy from a landlord's family, he did his best to avoid and ignore her. His words to her were quite rude in order to push her away. He does get even more moved by FL after seeing her high capabilities and her openness to business. When FL confessed to him and established a relationship with him, he thought that FL would get bored with him sooner or later. But FL never left him even during his hardest and most shameful times and even supported him and loved him no matter how stinky and dirty he is, his idea quickly changed into saving for the bride price to be able to marry FL. sh*t happens

Spoiler

re: the as*hole rapist and clingy and stalker second ML

[collapse]

Honestly, the second ML (Jiang Jianjun) could've been ML in another novel had FL not been reborn too. Unfortunately for him, FL was also reborn and no longer wanted to do anything with him, and her heart already belonged to ML since the previous timeline. He reminds me so much of 1st timeline Emperor Ruvi from Abandoned Empress (though Ruvi wasn't reborn so he was a good ML in the 2nd timeline lol) and Duke Wislash from I Don't Love You Anymore. He loved FL too late. By the time he realized he couldn't live without FL, FL's love was already exhausted and he can no longer make it up to her (especially since she could no longer bear children after her 2nd miscarriage). Yes, he was tragic but it can't be helped. He and FL are incompatible since they both have different expectations for their marriage and their personalities clashed. I really didn't pity him since he never changed after being reborn and kept on forcing himself (figuratively) into FL's life even though she didn't want to be involved with him anymore.

[collapse]

Anyway, the romance here is impecable. All I can say is they are my parents and yes, I may actually be Tangtang (just joking, lol). This novel was longer than the novels I usually read nowadays but the time I spent reading this was worth it~ <<less

Slice of life is slice of life. Gets pretty slow.

Girl goes back in time to meet her husband. She loves up on him but she’s rich and he’s poor. He wants to marry her, starts doin illegal things. Before you say mafia, it’s actually just doing capitalism and owning private business.

spoilers below

... more>> Pros.

-translator has a heart for this. They link videos and info about each traditional food or song or history in the novel so it is easy to understand.

-they eat GOOD every meal is an event. The descriptions are so yummy, I am so hungry. Literally made me go out and find beef noodles after reading the chapter. You will want to eat everything and translator actually put recipes there. Got me feeling some way about mung bean paste.

-characters have thoughts lmao. This needs to be said, there’s some kind of depth and Life tone in the novel, it’s good, which is why I rated 4 stars despite the train wreck of cons that I did not like.

cons

- some of the translations are a bit too literal. Cultural wife instead of cultured wife, but that’s minor.

-the inherent problems with this setting. Author never directly criticized the era but geez, who wants this? The communism dystopia and government watching and illegal black market activity that both the leads engage in is crazy. And ML goes to jail 10 years in plot fashion so he can start economizing in a time period where it’s legal. It’s not saying that communism is bad, but its written like a grinding leveling story where they open companies and just accumulate wealth in a very capitalism way. It’s just...... why this setting. like ML needs to get beaten down so MC can love him up but like the reason he’s getting hurt is bcos he’s related to a landlord. It’s just without any context (me) I am so confused. I’m going back to the good old fashioned cults/racism/s*avery fantasy abuse reasons.

-pig farm. He works on pig farm. This is not romantic hhahsgdgd. He literally gets rich through pig farm. Realistic, but in a romance novel?

-it’s not a feminist masterpiece, that’s for sure. The time period+author’s preference+Chinese culture makes it that the female MC’s life centers around feminine pursuits. And her accomplishments are similarly measured. She’s good at cooking, sewing, cleaning house. Her life goals are centered around marriage, a man, having kids. Women are supporters, nurturers. They get r*ped, taking advantage of, saved and rescued from failed marriages. Idk maybe I’m nitpicking. Some woman would have lived through this. But I just wish it wasn’t... the way that it is here.

-the romance kind of killed me lmaoooo. Idk but I hate the way that the author describes the love scenes. It’s all like the man has wolf like instinct, he’s so man and scary and sweaty and violent. And the girl is tender and soft and WHITE PALE SMOOTH. It’s alright I guess. But kind of ick with the possession, it’s giving rich ceo. Especially in the epilogue when he was rich man stalking her for three years. When MC isekai and went back, she did not do this stalking sh*t and was less creepy by far. ML gave her flowers everyday. Idk about u but that’s f*cking too much flower. And she starts taking a different road to avoid him and he’s like I’ll never give up and no matter how many time she rejects him he’s like no we were together in a past life. I hate it.

- “v**ginity is sacred”; immediately after s*x ML is like you belong to me now I’m ur man. And I hate that ideologically ugh. And how is it canon that ML is written as obsessed lovey husband but their first time is painful? Does he not notice. Ok, but the fact that MC didn’t want to tell him that he sucks and it hurt her and she just lies and says it was good? Don’t normalize girls not being allowed to enjoy sex? Don’t normalize lying about the sex? Why do you need to make it painful?? It’s human, not a male thing. Hello this is fiction, why can’t we do the unrealistic, and they finished at the same time thing.

-another thing, read the other reviews, literally went oh so the ex is important? Read the novel I feel like he appeared for max 10 chapters scattered across the novel. He has so little presence to me. A gnat. A footnote. And people feel sorry for him? Were we reading the same thing? He obvi never loved her, he just craves the comfort of another person he can just use. He’s a little boy who is afraid to be alone and too little too late, he can’t even begin to apologize because he doesn’t even know all the things that he did wrong. He has never put a space for her in his heart and he just suckkkks. In proper terms, he’s a foil to make ML look better, it’s just a tragedy for all involved. Yesh.

-love story of the daughter and the other guy in the epilogue. Big no, I don’t like him either. Goodbye.

I say all this negative sh*t but who read the whole novel? Me, that’s who. <<less

Really really good.

I love the loop in the story that sometimes it made me wonder whichever lifetime happened first.

They were both having the past memory of different timelines.

I like how loyal He Bai and Zhao Lanxiang with their memories and how they strived to make the life of the other better.

Very fiew rewind novels that shows devotion and commitment as thorough as this

The author really put effort in crafting the characters and the storyline. The novel itself had the right amount of fluff, intrigue, and touching scenes to keep the reader entertained. There were no braindead moments too, and the leads are both capable but not to the point of being OP/Mary Sue levels — just realistically hardworking and daring, which is admirable.

All in all, I deeply appreciate the quality of this novel. It was also calming but still entertaining.

I hope others will give this a chance too.

A very beautiful and heartwarming story.

ML comes from a very dirt-poor background, MC from a wealthier one, but she made decisions that caused her lifelong regret. They were married in their previous life, but had met each other much later in life.

After rebirth to the past, MC decided that she would help her wonderful husband from her previous life during his hardest times and meet him earlier!

... more>> MC is a very bold and courageous young woman. ML is also an admirable and honorable young man.

The story is also very grounded in the historical significance of the times (esp for poor villagers during the communism revolution). It has some fantastic rural life x smuggling tones, kind of a blast to the past to more adventurous times such as during the Prohibition era in the USA.

Slice-of-life, leveling up (improving quality of life), lots of delicious food, and some smuggling adventures make up the main theme of the story. The majority of the setting takes place in rural life, which makes it very unique and different feeling. There's a hint of danger, risk, and adventure as well.

Really well paced. Translation was pretty good, well-edited, only a few issues and mistakes here and there.

I highly recommend. (Reminds me a little of [Epiphanies of Rebirth]. Which I highly recommend as well.) <<less

Such a good read.

The last few chapters I kept crying and crying.

Spoiler

The best chapters are the last chapters because after reading about ZLX pursuit to get her hubby HSB back, Pei Sheng (the author) does a splendid job of tying back timeline references through HSB perspective. I wholeheartedly recommend reading the book till the end. I'm still crying.

So many people gave good reviews. I will also give a good but short review.

It was the story about how our Bai Fu Mei Lanxiang was chasing her husband. How she tried to improve his family's life quality. It was all about the process but the author described it in a very close to reality situation. I learned so many things about China's condition in the 70's era.

It was desperate situation for many people especially for our ML because of his family's background but our MC brought hope for our... more>> desperate ML, with her encouragement and love, he was working hard to be worthy of her.

It was sweet and heart warming as other reviews told. <<less

I rarely write review.I loved this novel so here I am after re-reading it for nth time. The story is awesome. Loved the female lead. she is really optimistic to the core. even in the previous life (Shown in end) she is positive for life even after being horribly treated from her ex-husband and In-laws.

Male lead is a mixture of domineering president and milk dog puppy ML. I loved that author described his conflict when the FL shamelessly flirted (Seduced?) with him. he loves his family and loves the FL... more>> and will also love his kids in the future. The part where the FL was forced to leave ML because of that damn ex-Husband was unclear in the MTL so I am waiting.

I also loved how the story is just a loop. For the FL - she met him after her divorce and miscarriage. he solved all her worries. healed her and made the second half of life best... so she rushed to him after she realised she came back in time. and helped Him

FOR THE ML - she came as educated youth and helped him improve. saved his sister, saved his grandma. made delicious food to keep their family full. loved him despite his low status and finally made him successful in life. so when he died and woke up in a jail (realised he was in a parallel universe) he was released from jail. he made money fast. he was not very healthy and his sister also was not married his grandma died. he searched for FL and found her suffering in a broken marriage. waited for 4 years until her divorce silently protecting her. making her strong and independent after her divorce and healing her heart.

It is just a wonderful loop of life. her previous life is the ML's next life. I teared up with how beautiful this novel was...

The kid's story epilogue was not that great (I mtled. so MTL was also kinda bad). it was ordinary compared to the huge great story of the ML and FL

PS. read this novel only if you have lots of food around you. Don't read when you are on diet. <<less

I cried so much in the last extra! I'm glad the story plot started with the reincarnation first, it gives a better reassurance feeling knowing things were better in FL's 2nd live.

The story is educational, moving, sweet and gluttonous the same time. I recommend this very much.

It educated me about China back in late 70s, it was very informative and such an eye opener.

It had me thinking about helping kids in poverty. Coz even though the world has reformed now, there are still kids who are too poor like the... more>> FL's little sister in law.

If you're looking for romance, not only both FL and ML has the best characters; but their relationships with their families so sweet. Almost all of the main characters developed very well.

And boy, this story is a hardcore foodie show down.. It has food in almost every page, be ready to salivate. Don't read on an empty stomach, you've been warned!

The critic from me is the word the FL used to call her young boyfriend in her 2nd live: her old man. This always remind me that the FL is actually 60 or 80 years old lady. Whenever I'm reminded, I kinda cringe that an 80 yo is pursuing this young meat. There are so many other names of endearment that the author/ translator can choose from. <<less

Finally! A really good read in a long time. ❤️😭 I love everything about it. I had it in my list for over 2 years but never opened it 😭. I regret not reading it sooner. If it's on your list, I highly recommend it. I feel I'll remember this story for a long time. At first I thought it will be the same old boring reincarnation plot that I will read to pass time but I was not soo ready for the emotional roller coasters, I cried a lot... more>> specially in the side stories.

I'm so envious I will never experience that kind of love, young, impulsive, passionate and innocent at the same time? The way they loved and lived reminds me of the wedding vows.

I skipped most of the parts where they described the food in detail because it's always making me hungry.

The scenarios are not too ridiculous and the story line is solid. I enjoyed how the author presented and solved the conflicts. Those parts were definitely page turners.

It describes country life and others may find that boring so pay attention to the slice of life tag. <<less

A tear involuntarily fell from my eyes the moment I finished reading it. I am even shocked that I would be affected this much. The story is just too beautiful, warm, and pure. I love how each and everyone was very hard working and has their own goals. The MC's relationship progress on the FL's rebirth was really cute and funny at the same time. Because of the ML's life complex status, it wasn't easy for the FL to break down his wall, but what more can I say other... more>> than everything's destined to happen for a reason. I'm so proud of my girl coz right after her rebirth, her first thought is too help her hubby from his tormenting situation and past tragedy. What I also love about this novel was that the ML was very much aware of his inferiorities but instead of lurking too much on his shadows, he still chose to love and have the FL while working really hard and going through dangerous phases just so can be deserving of her.
Spoiler

In both timelines, They're meant to be together to grow, heal, and be each other's support while growing old and retaining their unconditional love coz yes, the ML was rebirthed too on the marriage life that the FL remembered or came from. On their first life, ML wasn't too sad when the FL couldn't give him a child anymore due to her twice miscarriages (due to her ex-husband's Idiocracy that'd caused her sufferings) cause the ML was very much aware that they're going to have twins on her rebirth. It actually warms my heart whenever I remember the encouragement that they tend to remind one another during their deepest and hopeless times.

Book left me wiser (lol) and heartwarming. Worth the read. I'd say there wasn't much face-slapping by normal standards in which the protagonist directly solves someone - however, the characters end up seeing the protagonist live her life and are face-slapped that way. No better revenge than to live well.

99999/5 ☆ In the many, many years of reading novels on this site, I can say that Bai Fumei in the ‘70s is a novel that deserves to take the number one spot in my favorites list. Please, PLEASE DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND READ THIS GEM 😭 The plot, the writing, the characters, and the romance are done so well that I just can’t express how much I LOVE reading this.

Our MC, our precious Lanxiang is a literal breath of fresh air - she is not a green lotus... more>> nor a saint, but is such a down-to-earth person who is passionate about her love. She’s not shy with expressing her feelings with our ML, and she is so patient in supporting the ML so that he can break past his insecurities. She is a strong person with clear morals and is just so precious that I FREAKIN LOVE HER. She’s not a pushover and in fact, has a great personality.

Our ML, our precious Songbai is also a hardworking, patient, and realistic character. Sick of all the cookie cutter, copy and paste MLs that feel robotic and 2D? HAVE NO FEAR, because our Brother Bai is absolutely different. Even as a reader, you’d think that he is absolutely adorable and endearing yet at the same time you can’t help but just look up to him for being so admirable.

The side characters were also well written, they weren’t there to make our main CP look good, they had their own relationships and places in the story, especially MC’s ex-husband (although I still absolutely hate him for what he did to our MC). They are not 2D either, but have depth and their own character developments which I think is such a rare sight to see.

IF YOU’RE STILL HESITATING, THIS IS YOUR SIGN TO READ IT! Give it a try. I shelved this novel since it was slice of life and the setting was in the late ‘70s, but trust me, once I started reading I just couldn’t stop.

It will make you feel the ups and downs of life, but you will always be fed with so much dog food and fluff to make you smiling from happiness the whole time :)

BEST GIRL MC AND BEST BOY ML, they are adorable cuties that you won’t get enough of. Such a satisfying and fulfilling read, definitely my favorite novel now~

Kudos as well to the great translation! <<less

Lovely story. I feel bad for her ex though.. Although not that much.

I don’t like the part after the ML and FL get married. It takes a bit too long and quite boring. It wrapped up the story well though.. Could be shorter.

I like Jiang Li in both life times. She is a good princess character.

Highly recommended.

I often don't much like the kind of drama that comes with historical farming life stories, but this is just lovely, and on top of that extremely educational about Chinese life during the Cultural Revolution. Also, the FL enjoys occasionally squeezing ML's bu*t while walking past and I support that.
