“Baccano”, which Narita translates as “s*upid commotion”, is Italian for “ruckus”. Each of the stories in the series involves several unrelated plots intersecting and crossing each other as events spiral farther and farther out of control. Immortal alchemists, mafia operated speakeasies, and many other elements of pulp fiction mashed together for a world straight out of the movies.

It all started 300 years ago on a boat where the alchemists summoned the “demon” in order to obtain the method of immortality. The demon gave the alchemist the liquor of immortality, the only way to die is to pass down the way to produce the liquor.

But the following night, one of the alchemist started to devour his companions. To escape the threat, the alchemists scattered all over the world. In America during the temperance movement, centering around the liquor of immortality, the “s*upid commotion” starts!

One of the most complex and interesting light novel there is. The story in Baccano revolve around a set of immortals, ranging from the year of 1705 to 2000-s. Which is crazy. Be prepared to remember huge number of cast, multiple character view and epic story. The first arc of Baccano! The Rolling Bootlegs (1930) mainly follow the story of Firo, a young cammora member as he get entangled with mysterious organization, thief couple, and alchemist. One thing lead to another, and this character lead to another, and you get... more>> a set of almost immortal character you can’t bear to separate with. Narita-sensei really play a lot with perspective here, which could be seen from the Grand Punk Railroad arc. The conclusion and feeling you got from side-A and side-B are really different. Then when you think it all already finished, it comes back 11 volume later with Another Junk Railroad which completely change the story all over again. It’s a sheer madness. Madly good.
