Definitely one of the few novels I find enjoyable yet sometimes I want to rip my hair out. It's definitely worth the read, there's a few good motivational qoutes in the chapters, mixed with romance and comedy, I feel like I'm loving and the same time a bit dissatisfied with the novel.

The few things I did not like when reading novels is the repeated use of emojis (?), okay maybe I should be used to seeing emojis especially chinese novels but it's just one of my pet peeves.

But honestly, I... more>> enjoyed the novel. It started off a bit childish to show our MCs personality and maturity. The way the misunderstanding sometimes made me wanna punch somebody, the story progress and I realize that it was a story portraying the young adults struggle in taking hold of their career and life in general. So I started to get excited, surprisingly, the plot turned better.

As a romance novel is shows the relationship between co workers and boss and subordinates.

The cold war they made, the doubts in their heart, their resolve to their relationship. Arguments and reconciliation, it's fun to read especially when they learn to communicate more and more. The more they do it the easier it was to talk (although sometimes they really do take long with the cold war, it was quite funny and concerning)

It also talked about same-s*x love and I was quite happy seeing a situation that's close to reality, there will always be some people who might not accept same-s*x relationship, there are some who can't see two men together and some poeple who will support.

Spoiler

the funniest moment was during Gu Yaos wedding, Father Zhang was the only one who didn't know and even The groom's family knew about MC and ML. I laughed at that part cause, clearly, the old man didn't know while everyone was looking at him with cold sweat

[collapse]

Also the slice of life part, yes young adults have different struggles and even had a lot of crisis especially when you are expected to be someone with a big educational background. I'm happy to see a lot of wise words coming from ML and MC even, life is so unexpected.

Our MC is lucky to be chased by a domineering and capable ML who guides him along the way and supports him. We likely do not get this A+++ treatment in real life so seeing such romantic thing here is so wonderful.

I srsly enjoyed it and read it for 3 to 5 days to relax from my school work (I'm also studying to get my masters degree) I'm so happy for MC and ML, I love the ending and how patient and understanding they are at one another. How they really walk in the path together holding eachother, and not letting go. I just love stories like this although I'm more into fantasy, this was a breathe of fresh air. <<less

I literally made an account just to review this.

I can't properly express how touching this story was, from its bitterly realistic lows to its heart warming highs. And the author certainly knows how to end a story with a fufilling close. The slow yet realistically paced romance between the two characters really showcased what it actually is like to fall in love ; issues and all. The financial issues and problems the main character go through hit home and are neither exaggerated or down played ; the author perfectly puts... more>> your ad a reader in the character's shoes and let's you feel the frustration of post graduation and facing the real world.

There was angst, fluff, comedy and smut. Although I'm not saying it's the best novel I've ever read, it certainly is the best (imo) at presenting realistic problems and obstacles and left me with the happiest feeling. The ending made me think this must be how it feels to marry off your child : joyous everything went so well yet an odd bitter feeling at seeing it all end.

If you're hesitant about reading this novel, I understand. I put this novel off thinking it'd be too serious for me, or that it wasn't going to be interesting. I was very wrong. Please read it, although I'm sure our opinions will differ, I hope you too can feel this same heartwrenching joy. <<less

I read halfway about chapter 133 then I realized I don't like MC's chara.

The way he is in a relationship is probably because he grew up spoiled...

How he acted after they confirmed their relationship is not my cup of tea. I'll probably read the rest after reading something fluffy

The translation is inconsistent (long stretches where it's good and then certain stretches where it's just downright odd) but the story is good.

It's a slowbuild with character and relationship development, a get-together which is gradual and very emotional. The story has the highs and lows of a developing young romance in its early stages, as well as highs and lows of people trying to pursue their career/dreams in a competitive, sometimes thankless field. The struggle of young people trying to eke out a living in an expensive city was pretty... more>> relatable. I really liked that the writer didn't rush any part of the story while keeping it interesting all the way to the end.

I really liked the architecture focus earlier in the novel. Seemed like the writer did some research and it felt like an interesting fresh new setting I've never read about before. The work in an architecture company also made the story more 3-dimensional with a touch more realism. Oh, and not to be neglected: it's a very, very romantic story with a ton of dog food to spread around! <<less

This novel is a hidden gem. Please give it a chance. It’s a slow burn, so have patience. It only makes the moment they get together sweeter and satisfying.

It was the first one I stayed up to 3 in the morning reading, the first one that motivated me (a lazy potato) to work hard towards my goal, and the first one that *almost* made me cry. (There isn’t angst BTW, it’s just that the MC’s experience is similar to my own and it hit home really hard)

The novel is... more>> about life after university.
Spoiler

The MC deals with being broke, trying to find a job in an industry that is declining, failure, thinking he’s not good enough and comparing himself to others, wanting to give up, questioning his life choices and many more. The ML helps him overcome these hurdles together.

[collapse]

Unlike *some* other novels, this one makes me feel like the MC has a life outside of his relationship with the ML. The MC has great friends that support him, and a loving family that care about them. Every supporting character is realistic, great character development in not only the MC and ML, but most of their friends, family and colleagues as well.

The ML might seem a little mean and like a bully at the start, but he learns from his mistakes and never oversteps the MC’s bottom line. He respects the MC and cherishes him. They do get into fights and misunderstandings, but hey, what relationship doesn’t? It’s normal to quarrel, and it makes them understand each other better.

It is a great slice of life novel, so go on, give it a try. You won’t regret it, I promise :) <<less

I had started this book last year but left it in the middle. When I picked it up this time, I read it again from begining because I dint remember why I left it in the first place. I really like workplace romance and this is just perfect. It's very slice of life without being boring and fluffy in all the right places. I also really liked the chemistry between the two.

With all of this, as I reached the end, I realised why I left it in the middle. If... more>> you have read author nims other novels you will find they have a thing for mentor-mentee relationship. Although this isn't as bad as her other novel "Black-bellied vs. Black-bellied: Ultimate Showdown", where the ML is straight up a groomer, unequal power dynamics is not hot especially if you are in the same field and same office. ML is almost treats MC like a kid. Tbh, Gu Yu isn't as bad as most OP black-bellied domineering President, nor does he behaves like one but he also isn't very good at communication and admitting his mistakes. He never really apologises and this is imo very problematic. I was also very put off by that one scene

Spoiler

where ML called MC disappointing for no reason AT ALL, like imagine you have a huge ass crush on someone and they have been constantly ignoring you, you don't have money and you have to move out, your work life isn't going as good as you think and then your crush calls you disappointing. Yes, ML don't know the full story but like he keeps calling MC childish but then freaks out when MC acts childish ?!!!

[collapse]

Anyways, these are small things and the story can still be enjoyed imo. I liked all their side Characters and am jealous of Zhang Siyi for having such supportive and loving colleagues, like where do you find them 😭

Story - 10/10

Side Characters - 10/10

Main characters - 8/10 (Siyi gets full 5 while Gu Yu gets 3 out of 5)

I feel like I will definitely read it again because it just puts you in a good mood. <<less

A gratifying slowburn about the grind of kicking off one’s career as a young professional, personal growth, as well as discovering and coming to terms with one’s s*xual identity. Ignoring the romantic aspect of it, ML is the mentor and boss we all could have used—tough but fair, notices the little things, and willing to invest in his employees' professional development. He is seemingly perfect but his flaws emerge when he becomes interested in MC. It is an imbalanced relationship but a major part of the story is about MC... more>> becoming ML's professional equal and ML providing guidance along the way. The relationship is quite sweet and their bedroom shenanigans are a bit of a slowburn, too.

Regarding why Gu Yu falls for ZSY:

Spoiler

You know how there's always that one effortlessly cool person whose presence always makes a social gathering more fun? I'm thinking ZSY is like that. There was a reason why he was beloved among his coworkers and considered the company mascot, so I think GY was initially interested in his talent, attracted by his good looks, and drawn in by his magnetic personality.

As others already write lengthy opinion, I just want to say:

WHY THERE ARE SO MANY RICH PEOPLE IN THIS NOVEL!! HOW DID THEY EARN SO MUCH!!

🤣🤣😅 Well, since this novel really realistic, the only unrealistic part is how some characters can easily earn so much money. Like the MC say, it would take 10 years for him to earn 1 million to further study, how can the others easily make them in short period of time.

Anyway, such a good read. I really love this novel.

This novel is amazing. It shows a lot of problems that young people face nowadays: discovering their s*xual orientation and pressure from society; graduating and taking their first independent steps as adults; frustration because reality is cruel and achieving goals or chasing dreams is truly hard; finding a job and discovering that your degree is useless.

The characters are fantastic too, especially the main character, who grows and changes dramatically throughout the story. I also loved ML, who guided and helped MC. Their love story is sweet. Because they have different... more>> personalities and ML is a bit introverted and cold, observing the development of their relationship was truly fascinating. I liked the side characters too and how the author showed a lot of problems through their stories. Xi He Qing Ling managed to discuss a lot of topics, showing us a lot of problems without exaggerating anything. The novel is perfect; it's too realistic.

The story has a nice flow. Sometimes it was really funny; sometimes I felt sad or frustrated on behalf of the characters, but the story itself is amazing. It's long but not boring, and it's a brilliant slice of life. I really connected with this story because I just graduated and have similar problems. I think this is one of the reasons why this story is so good: we all more or less have the same experiences and struggles, so we understand and connect with the characters better. <<less

It was quite a journey, longer than some novels obviously, but you wouldn't feel it.

I have read quite a lot of complaints about this novel being extremely SLOW and boring, and honestly I was quite reluctant to start this. GOOD THING though that I gave this a chance~ Aside from receiving many mouthfuls of FLUFF, this also expressed the difficulties regarding pursuing one's dreams vs doing what's practical. Overall, I enjoyed it so much~

Thank you very much to the author and the translator of this novel, you made my heart beat faster for this sweet sweet couple until the end.

Unrealistically ideal and toxic relationships are predominant in fiction. I really appreciate that this novel did not take that cliché route and instead depicted a reasonably healthy relationship.

I can't speak of the accuracy of the depicted architecture work, since I at most know the name of autoCAD and what a drafting table looks like, but I can tell that the author put in a sincere effort to research before writing. The economic and cultural struggles were also hinted at in a beautiful and subtle way.

This is my first time reading... more>> anything by the author, but I don't think it will be the last. :) Edit: Turns out it wasn't the first time when I checked! No regrets! I can read them again!!! <<less

Ahh what can I say really? Such a sweet, sweet love story. I really wish I had read this story when I was younger, there are actually some pretty inspirational moments in the story that make me want to go back to school and do it over with a different approach.

I love architenture, however I feel like I am similar to those described in the story, in love with the romance of beautiful buildings, without much thought given to everyday life buildings, and the heart and soul that also goes... more>> into them. This story gave me a whole new appreciation for that industry, and the auther seems to be rather knowledgeable which made it very interesting to read.

I love the character development of this story, and while I feel like there was a lot about the MC's growth and improvement, the love story is very prevalent, and sickeningly sweet, in the best way of course.

Seeing how much the ML loves the MC and the few chapters thrown in from his point of view definitely made my heartache at times. I can't begin to imagine the insecurity that he must have faced pursing his relationship, but I loved reading every angsty moment of it.

The MC is rather immature in the beginning of the story, but you get to watch him mature and struggle as he fights to be on equal ground with the one he loves. Of course there are misunderstandings, and they both are crazy jealous over the other, which is too funny becuase they are both so in love with each other that there is no hope for anyone to come between them.

Not an emotionally heavy story, just a lot of love and dog food with a healthy side of architecture.

Spoiler

There are definitely times when they are celebrating the relationships of their friends and family that I really feel bad for them, not being able to openly express their love and show the same commitment as other couples. They are happy being together though, and they make you feel satisfied as well.

[collapse]

If you have some down time and are looking for a sweet modern love story, I think you will really enjoy this one. I would definitely recommend it, and if I'm being honest I could see myself coming back at some point to read it again. Their love for eachother really is beautifully depicted.

Spoiler

Side Note: There is a bit of NSFW here and there throughout the story. Fairly descriptive at certain times, and low key at others. Good or bad, you can decide.

Honestly, I just came back here to rate this novel. I'm in love with this and the translation team did a wonderful job as well. It's quite fluffy and there's perfect blend of smut and comdey (◡ ω ◡)

It's not perfect in a sense that it's more biased towards the ML as one of the reader pointed out. There were times I really wanted the ML to yk understand the MC and apologize and not only the MC being in the wrong no matter the cause of argument.
Spoiler

Though it never happened for apparently ML is always right ┐ ( ̄ヘ ̄) ┌

[collapse]

The romance is not a quickie which is great because for me personally, I don't usually enjoy "wham, bam, thank you sir". It's more realistic.. Be it about relationships, real-life struggles or whatever it is generally.

I'd advice you to not take the reviews in mind and read the novel with a blank page. Maybe you'll love it more or hate it but either way, it'll be how you perceived it and not influenced by anyone's opinion.

I enjoyed most of it until chapter 172 when they first start having s*x. The relationship power dynamics after they started having s*x just really made me uncomfortable. There is a contradiction that I'm honestly not sure the author realizes they have created because the MC is clearly written as unhappy with his s*x life (the frequency and also the fact that his bf just keeps wanting more even when he says he is tired or it's affecting his work) but then the author has a paragraph that just states... more>> that the MC is happy. That happiness isn't really shown enough for me to actually see it. I am dropping it as of chapter 179 because it doesn't seem like that relationship dynamic is getting solved and I am getting tired of how poorly they communicate with each other. <<less

I didn't expect a lot from this story going in, but found the journey extremely enjoyable.

I was very concerned about the age and status difference between MC and ML for the romance to work out, but I do believe the author handled it well.

Being a bit older, I feel that the MC's foibles (immaturity at work) as well as lessons learned to be very realistic and also inspirational.

... more>> Expect:

  • Surprisingly realistic and detailed depiction of the architecture industry, workplace, and growth
  • Combination of slow-burn romance and realistic life/work challenges
  • Detailed character development of MC (more in the work sphere and less in the romance sphere)
  • Interesting side characters, friend groups, foils that are not one-dimensional
  • Life lessons about tolerance, hard work, generosity, and openness, and the pursuit of one's skill and dreams instead of pursuit of money
  • MC is a naive, selfish, fresh college grad starting off
    • He seems especially self-centered and immature at many parts in his work and in his relationship, but this is depicted quite realistically in my opinion. I've encountered some fresh college grads/or interns who were very similar.
    • MC is also quite immature in his relationship at times, which can get frustrating, but it's also part of his charm
The novel is surprisingly mature and self-aware of its biases, and it's one of the rare novels where there was a huge focus on the MC's job and work development, which was incredibly enjoyable to read. To be honest, I found it more interesting than the MC's romance.

ML is stereotypically Mr. Perfect in every aspect, pretty much, with only minor weaknesses in that he cannot sing. However, his conflicts with the MC and their couples' arguments were depicted very realistically.

A very rare gem in this genre.

Spoiler

I only have a very small issue about the whole top/bottom stereotyping and why MLs are always portrayed forcing their 'bottoms' to have a lot of s*x and why 'bottoms' can't also take initiative or look for s*x ??

Other parts of the novel were depicted so carefully and with so much research, this one part just stuck out quite a lot as being cliche and unrealistic.

[collapse]

Translation starts off a bit immature (MTL) but grows by leaps and bounds. Great translation overall. <<less

I dunno, man... I really don't know. The MC's behavior was embarrassing at the beginning but he's fresh out of college and doesn't really know a lot, so his mistakes at work were excusable. Over the course of the story, he sort of matures, becomes a competent worker, and is sometimes really enjoyable to read about. But then there's the other times when I really want to smack him over the head, like the time when ... more>>
Spoiler

he was trying to get a job for Su Yuan (his friend) and Gu Yu (ML) tells him he can't pull strings just because they're dating, Zhang Siyi (MC) blows up. He expects preferential treatment quite a bit, which makes me angry. He also blew up when he found out that he couldn't share a room with Gu Yu on the Japan trip. Sometimes, he behaves like an utter child which ruins things for me.

[collapse]

That's not to say I like the ML very much, either. It's like he can do no wrong. He's the hottest person, best dressed, great job, smart, can cook, etc. etc. Zhang Siyi is always in the wrong when they fight. I want to see the roles reversed for a bit. He's also almost always calm and collected, which gets boring to read about. Any time it looks like the ML messes up, it's explained away in his favor and the readers realize he had a logical reason for it. I want to see him mess up too, have a few flaws, be human, you know? The author tries giving him "flaws" like how he can't play video games well or how he can't sing well, but compared to Siyi's obvious real-life shortcomings these faults aren't really faults.

I think Zhang Siyi being jealous, hot-headed, and s*upid sometimes are all human traits so it's interesting to see. He also apologizes when he's wrong. I just wish he was a little more mature; it feels like I'm reading about a teenager sometimes.

Spoiler

Zhang Siyi -- before he moved into Gu Yu's house -- was going through a lot. He was incredibly jealous with no outlet for his emotions, he was gonna be kicked out of his house, his hard work in a project amounted to nothing, his best friend had left and his family doesn't know the sh*t he's going through. So when he blew up and told Gu Yu he'd quit, Gu Yu should've tried to calm him down or something rather than calling him a disappointment. The boy is clearly suffering, but wow. It is not unprecedented for Gu Yu to be disappointed, but acting like that was just awful on his part IMO. And of course it was glossed over as Gu Yu being right, as always.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Also when they have s*x, Gu Yu needs to stop pressuring Zhang Siyi when he doesn't want it. Siyi isn't shy about wanting s*x, but he's explained time and time again that it affects his work the next day and that he's incredibly tired if they do it so often. Gu Yu does not pay attention to any of that.

[collapse]

Overall, it's okay. I love the way the author goes into depth about architecture --not that I'm too familiar with it, so I can't comment on the accuracy-- but you can tell they put the effort into creating a believable setting than just making it a basic office setting. I also really liked Gu Yu and Siyi's flirtationship in the early chapters, and the friendships are nuanced and I love it, but some things just weren't to my taste, I guess. <<less
