As a Captain, You Must Be Cold

As the youngest captain of the league team, Yu Zhaohan knew that if he wanted to establish his prestige, he must establish a stable personality. His eyes were indifferent, he has a cold face, and he always used a full stop when sending messages. Especially in front of Shi Du, the new transfer, who was too much to handle.

Everyone thought Yu Zhaohan is a beautiful and cold flower, and so did Shi Du. He has never been interested in Bking, and he was too lazy to interact with Yu Zhaohan. Until one day, Shi Du ended his vacation early and returned to the base.

He saw Yu Zhaohan wearing a little dinosaur’s plush pajamas, sitting cross-legged on the sofa watching “Ultraman”, battling an unopenable canned fruit, and even using his teeth.

The two looked at each other, and the scene was very awkward.
Yu Zhaohan’s face was still cold, but his ears were red: “It’s a misunderstanding, I’m not a fool.”

“I see.” Shi Du smiled and approached Yu Zhaohan with full aggression, “Then, does the captain need help?”

After the two dated –
Shi Du: “Do you know baby, you don’t need to pretend to be in front of your boyfriend.”

Yu Zhaohan pondered for a long time, then slowly raised his head: “Oh… can that boyfriend touch my head?”

Note: Bking : Something like a “bking” is a king of “装逼“ which is someone who does cool stuff effortlessly or everything they do is unusually “cool”.

(▼_▼) Cold and emotionless captain but an airhead and a dumdum in the inside x Carefree, sly and quick witted ML

Im a bit dissatisfied that even tho its an esports novel, there isnt much battle nor explanation of the competition as much. Like 90% of this is full slice of life... This usually revolves around the team's slice of life dynamics and interactions. Plus, some romance progress for ML and MC. Its pretty cute and fluffly. gotta say MC is too cute!!!! Is the MC what people consider a... more>> moe....? (//∇//) lol

Just gotta remind you all, if you want to read some solid esports. I dont really recommend this at all but if you want some light, cute and fluffly romance plus some slice of life with side characters, I recommend it a looot!! SO DANG CUUTE!! <<less

This novel is basically slice of life.

There's no big challenge or hurdle that the MC's have to conquer except for winning the championship, which they're obviously going to win. Either way, there's nothing in this novel that gets my blood boiling with excitement, so I feel kinda bored.

The MC is cute and the ML isn't just some cold, black-bellied CEO and actually has a personality so that's a plus point.

The romance in this novel in pretty neat. But most of the plot has no suspense at all, the MC's team... more>> wins every game easily. This stands true for upto chapter 67.

Another thing to note, this novel has heavy elements of xenophobia especially against Koreans.

There hasn't been a single good or morally upstanding Korean team in this novel yet. According to the author, they all have to use underhanded tactics or are bad-mannered and rude.

This makes me quite uncomfortable as it seems like the author is really digging at the Koreans here, going as far as to diss a Korean team for not liking Chinese food even though the main cast also expressed slight dislike towards Korean food.

If you don't mind this and are looking for a novel filled with fluff where basically everyone is a fan of MC (lmao) and romance comes pretty early (MC and ML are already open about their feelings to eachother even though it's only chapter 67), then you can go ahead and read this novel.

You can basically turn your brain off and read this, you don't even have to read the eSports part as it doesn't even affect the following dialogues much.

Overall, I'd rate this novel a 4.2/5. <<less

4 stars

5 stars for the couple, team relationship, development and all. I loved the gap moe and how the relationship progressed. They developed so well together and it was so sweet. The main CP definitely had great chemistry and complimented each other really well.

Spoiler

YZH is very clingy (in a cute way) and SD definitely indulges him but they fit so well. This is probably one of the best chemistry couple I've seen in a while. I also adore the team chemistry even with the newer characters like Stone who became their CP fan which was kind of funny. And JD and Cheese both keeping a secret they cannot tell. And QX who held the most EQ in the team. Even coach Lu with the weak mentality was kind of funny. And everyone being a fan of YZH.

There's some emotional plotline not just revolving around the couple, from

Splendid (whom I was kind of glad eventually left. To the classic e-sport injury issue but this time falling on another team member rather than the main CP.

little boss! There more to push the development of the main CP. I almost want a little more story to them but there really isn't. They're just there.

As for the minus 1 star
Spoiler

probably has to do with the competition aspect. I'm not sure if I was reading too deeply into a sweet romance book but. I felt it was almost a bit xenophobic? Or just very one-sided? Like very against people of other nationalities? Particularly towards the Koreans for no real reason. Like the Korean teams that they go up against are usually using some underhanded tactics that undermine their professionalism. Which was just so bizarre. And then when they went up against the US team, even the US team did some shady backhand PR tactic. Like I enjoy when the team wins but it would have been more enjoyable if there was a fair fighting ground? Because of all these almost backhand stuffs it just felt very slimy? And what was even the point? I ended up just fast forward reading some parts of the competition portion.

Overall, I read for the cute relationship and was satisfied with it. <<less

This novel is so silly, and I laughed so hard reading MC's gap moe ways. Whenever he switched between Shine and Yuyu I felt so much maternal affection it is unreal. Every time he asked for praise and looked expectantly at ML my heart literally could not take the cuteness. Also the way he just says whatever is on his mind to ML had me crying tears of laughter- he's so straightforward it almost gave second hand embarrassment, if not for how accepting and loving ML is of all his... more>> quirks.

Shi Du is the sweetest ML, always ready to sacrifice his own pride to help Yuyu keep up his pretense, and he never harshly judges or shames MC for his oddities. The way he phrases his feelings towards MC is beautiful. Everyone deserves to be loved the way that Shi Du loves his Yuyu, but of course, no one can be quite as lovable as Yuyu. Honestly a lot to learn from ML on how to treat those you love with how he takes care of and supports MC. In ML's words:

"When you liked someone, you had to accept all of them. Only scoundrels would be picky about their partners. He wasn't a scoundrel; he would accept and tolerate all the quirks of his silly wife."

Such a great story, more just a romance than an esports though which is a pro for those not great at following lengthy esports games (aka me). Most of the games in this novel are over in just a few lines, and there's no extensive description of the battles. Even when there is more detail, it's not as intense or engaging as other esports novels. The novel is definitely not boring by any means though, as the characters really drive the plot with their individual likability and chemistry together.

The two MCs have such frank and open conversations about literally everything and there's really no room for misunderstandings between them. Never before have I seen two characters having an in-depth retrospective on s*x with one of them even taking notes on the side?? I just love how much trust they have in each other to communicate so clearly and know that the other person will respect and listen to their words.

Some other notes: there's no h*mophobia in this world and gay relationships are normal, but there is some mild xenophobia against Koreans and other non-Chinese. It's not as prominent or exaggerated as it can get in other Chinese novels but there's a little us vs them mentality. Makes sense for a competition based novel though.

Also there's no detailed s*x scenes but they do talk about the process so frankly I was really taken aback at first haha! They're really not afraid of talking through their likes and dislikes, and it's just so refreshing.
Spoiler

THE REVELATION A FEW CHAPTERS AFTER THEIR FIRST TIME THAT THEY DIDNT USE LUBE NO WONDER IT HURT HAHA?? What was all that researching they did before for?? They're both just so silly.

This is wholesome.

It's cute and fluffy. But as seen from the summary, there's a lot of moments of second hand embarrassment.

Spoiler

The shou is a super straightforward, dense, and adorable ball of a good captain. The gong is arrogant and adorable. The side characters have personalities that make me like them. The hateful enemy teams are indeed hateful, but you get over them quickly.

Overall, very cute, in my opinion.

4.5/5. This game isn't LOL so I found it hard to understand at parts, but no matter bc you can just skim through the game parts if u don't understand. I kinda wish there was a real reveal of the mc's true personality, there was a subtle reveal at the last chapter but it's not enough for me. The MC is vvvv cute, though I think at some parts he was written to be way to dumb to be realistic.

overall this novel was enjoyable and I can see myself rereading... more>> it. The translation was abit iffy at the start but it will improve as the story goes on <<less

This is so silly.

I have been laughing so loudly at 2 am.

AHHHHHHH. This is so wholesome and cute. I want this to be adapted in a drama or smth. Especially that one scene where Shi Du, almost believe that Yuyu is naturally cold and profound.

Spoiler

In the bathroom scene, where Yuyu said something deep and the light is shining on him and Shi Du almost got awed. HAHAHAHAHAHA. But he noticed that Yuyu is trying to find that center of light. This is so silly. I was laughing so hard.

The story is pretty ok.

As someone who loves reading esports novels, I didn't actually feel the "esports vibe" while I was reading the story. Maybe because it was kinda a slice of life kind so it didn't explain much to the game 🤷🏻‍♀️

So if you're like me who loves to read solid esport—with battles, competition, and the thrill while reading it, I don't recommend reading this but if you want light, cute, and all about fluff, I highly recommend this for you to give this a try <3

B-tier (3.2 star point)

The story is the usual e-sports, but with quite a lot of funny points. The main character, Yu Zhaohan, is someone who creates a false persona in order to be the "captain" that everyone respect. His childish personality is so hidden, until it's found out by his teammate, and kinda ex-enemy, though in a cute way, Shi Du. Then their relationship started from there.

It's not a perfect story, but it's also not that bad. I had my fun share of laugh throughout the story. There are... more>> times when it's crazy and there are times when it's actually quite good. It's a balanced story, and I do like that it's all about the e-sports and the 2 leads playing together and reaching the highest point in e-sports together.

Because it's e-sports, you will see the usual e-sports dynamic. Livestreaming, fans commenting, the competition, and so on. It's all present. Nothing new. <<less

Cute and funny story.

Soft marshmallow forced to become the cold ice beauty pillar of support for his team. It kind of still works because both leads are still quite young, so the immaturity is understandable and fits in well. MC is an eccentric straight shooting naive boy, which makes for very amusing and unexpected reactions, especially romantically.

Both leads are a bit dumb but it can be attributed to their age and inexperience.

... more>> Quite a romance-led e-sports novel with some gaming elements done alright. Mostly quite predictable but got me invested enough.

Laughed out loud a few times. Wish the translation was better.

Likely won’t re-read. <<less

Not much interest in finishing the story since MC and ML are together and the only plot points are winning the tournament and officially coming out. That and the translation is honestly so bad. I’m pretty confident the translation is not MTL but it reads like the translator understands Chinese but not English because some parts even MTL would not make that mistake. I recommend reading the raws instead.

The story was genuinely fun to read. MC is adorable as aloof Shine and ditzy Yuyu. And the story is tastefully written... more>> so it doesn’t feel forced when MC switches between his Shine and Yuyu personas or that every single script that MC designs magically works out because it’s MC. In fact, I feel even worse for Shine who has gone through and endured so much suffering to the point where his default mode is his persona.

But it does get repetitive seeing everyone falling for MC’s divine looks, and ML acting helpless around the MC because MC is too pretty for ML to stay mad. <<less

If you looking for comedy with slice of life and good balance between gaming scenes with IRL scenes, this one is for you.

At the beginning of the story, there was too many characters to keep up but you will get the hang of it! You will see MC’s pov and his hillarious thoughts of hiding his true feelings.

MC is very likable, cute and super funny (I laughed out loud while reading this in class). The ML is mature and very charismatic but because he is 18-19, he stills have some... more>> childish sides in him (it’s toleratable). The CP is super adorable together that makes me feel like I’m third wheeling them LOL.

The only thing I confused me a bit was the game system. Maybe this is a made-up game inside the author’s mind or maybe I do not know about it. It took me quite a bit of chapters to understand the concept of the gameplay but eh.

I would give this a 4.5/5 for the comedy and the CP. Why not 5/5? It’s hard to understand the game system lol. <<less

The storyline is good, the characters are cute and fun and I enjoyed spending time on this.

However, I will say that it gets pretty boring here and there. It's a cliche trajectory to win the championship, and the romance gets pretty lackluster as you continue.

Maybe it's because I was hoping they'd have more character development, but they didn't. They were pretty immature the whole story and I honestly don't see them lasting after the story's end. They buy houses together and prepared an entire life together, but their immaturity may... more>> create issues, especially once they start maturing.

I feel like it would have been better to have the two of them face that separation due to MLs family sending him to school. It would have given them more time to establish their personal feelings and understand the world more and more mature more. Maybe that's just my opinion. Anyway, the story was perfect to pass the time. I'll rate this a 3.5/5 <<less

The story is OK.

It is kind of cute but not sugary sweet. MC is a genius as captain but instantly becomes kind of s*upid when in private.

I did like how ML just went with it when ever MC had one of his s*upid ideas.

... more>> Over all, there was no real progress about their characters. In my opinion there are too much unsolved things... be it their parents, career or future plans. That kind of annoyed me.

The translation was Ok. Though I'm not sure if it is a problem of the writer or translator.... some times the invented game characters were directly called by the hero names of Overwatch. All the heroes described sound a lot like Overwatch heroes... so I'm not sure if the writer or translator changed the names.

I most likely will not read this again but it also was not a time waste. <<less

This story was so cute, I felt like it ended too soon!

tbh, I didn’t feel like there was much second hand embarrassment at all, I’ve definitely had to endure much worse 🥲 but it was definitely silly and funny and endearing! I also didn’t mind less focus on the e-sports and matches but that may be because I used to love those stories, read too much of it and then got sick of it 😂 I especially love the double silly protagonists, both clumsy and adorable 🥰

Super adorable 🥹 Shine is a cool ice beauty but Yuyu is just an adorable baby!! I love the contrast between his two characters to be honest. But it does seem to be quite tiring for him to act almost 24/7 so I'm glad that ShiDu caught him as Yuyu 🤭

And I have to say, I quite like Yuyu's interesting way of thinking because he's definitely not normal hahahhahaha. And the way he makes ShiDu 'wither' when he speaks HAHAHHAHAHA

Cold beauty shou whose genius is limited to e-sports and academics BUT is a soft, innocent baby deep inside x Doting, straightforward gong who has no choice but to submit to the whims of his cute and precious lover

Giving it a 5-star because Yuyu deserves it. If you’re looking for in-depth gaming, this probably isn’t for you. This story focuses more on the storyline between the two and some dynamics between people around them.

I honestly adore Yu Zhaohan (MC) and though I found myself laughing on so many points because... more>> the characters are so comical, I honestly just felt so f*cking sad for him sometimes.
Spoiler

Like no matter how lightly it was mentioned throughout, the pressure he’d had to endure all these years is f*cking insane. The man’s only 19 and he’s been the pillar ever since the captaincy changed when he was... 17? While I was always actively aware of it from the beginning, it hit hardest during the Finals chapter when Coach Lu started wondering when the crybaby YZH became the stone cold character that he is now. Because everyone was crying, the crybaby wasn’t allowed to cry and tasked himself with the responsibility of holding everyone up no matter what. And that Hurt for me the same way it did for ML.

However, like ML, I went with him in the journey of hurting for YZH (like when MC said he forgot how to smile properly with teeth, how he can’t allow himself to cry in an ugly way, how he can’t ever cry publicly, or that even when he was just gazing out, he would often look lonely and unreachable) but also got through the journey of being endeared by the discovery of who YZH truly is. That YZH isn’t as fragile as one would perceive him to be and he does things that he finds needs to be done and accomplishes them brilliantly. And he deserves every bit of glory for everything he’s done, he deserves all the respect as well. You do not need to pity a captain as brilliant as Yu Zhaohan.

[collapse]

I love that Shi Du (ML) exists, I love that of all the people that MC had to meet, it was him. I love that Shi Du absolutely adores MC to the point that he did. And I love that among everyone, he realized and respected the development that YZH had to make and do for himself and for his team. It’s the realization that while the mask front may have started out as fake, it eventually became something that was just another brilliant side of YZH that was still lovable, worth adoring, worth respecting. I honestly just love all the characters in this novel that even though I don’t think the novel was perfectly written, it deserves the 5-star just for the way the characters were laid out.

this was so silly and cute, more slice of life with esports sprinkled here and there, but it was good all the same. This was my very first esports danmei and I think it served as a good intro to the genre as it wasn't very esports-focused but rather more on the couple's relationship dynamics, and the game was easy enough to understand.
