Seriously for short story, this writing for this story is so good. I love the plot and like all the character. Although ML is like typical ancient man but eventually he realize which one is more important for him (his wife and child) and try his best to reconcile with FL. FL character is also relatable and not OP like other novel. She just ordinary modern person that have a bit survival skill since she was a firefighter but of course she more tough compared to other woman in ancient... more>> era. Actually this story have a lot potential for long novel. As person who love reading long novel, I really wish the author elaborate more all the scenes instead of just summarize all the things happened. <<less

Edit: Since I'm being quoted, here's my two cents:

I stand by my review.

I think a novel meant to be cute/fluffy/romantic but also featuring a ML with misogynistic behaviour is in itself a dichotomy/oxymoron.

... more>> And excusing said actions with the general gist of "oh but he didn't really mean it", "he felt bad afterward and look how contrite he is now", " it's just a misunderstanding"... Please. Bad behaviour is simply bad behaviour.

Mind you, most historical Chinese novels contain a baseline of chauvinistic ideology, whether it's through context (systemic) or portrayed in side characters. So we all need and have a certain pain threshold when stepping into the genre.

Towards casual misogyny and lack of respect towards women, à la 2023, being portrayed in a love interest (the ML), my tolerance is close to nil. It's the very reason I can't and don't read a lot of Chinese novels written by male authors, regardless of genre.

The only time I tolerate it, in historical novels, is when they are either:

a) thrillers/tragedies like Wife can't escape or Strategy to Capture Men (no romance there) or like the heart-wrenching Mei Gongqing (where foolish MC is ruthlessly and selfishly used by her prospective mls)

b) survival themed - like Dreamer of the Spring Boudoir (hardly would call that romance, more an arrangement between grown adults)

c) bodice rippers/yandere-esque - a very clear-cut "Abandon all hope -and brain cells- yee who enters here"

d) or where a ML atones for current/past misdeeds type with a cue for their happily ever after. Needless to say, a lot of those are... questionable. The topic is generally just whitewashed and swept under the rug. Very few truly acknowledge it, hold ML accountable and show growth. One of the rare good ones atm is Chang'an's First Beauty.

Notice a trend here? All the books I mentioned are somewhat dark/serious because they deal with tough topics and don't shy from it.

This novel here never really reached, imo, case (d). As I've already clearly said in my original review, the whole tone of the writing as those events were happening, were one of lightheartedness and cutesy talk. It hit a nerve, so I decided to give up on it.

Ultimately, it just comes down to my personal preferences and limits.

So, I'll finish by saying this: imo there is no absolute for what should be or should not be, well tolerated. Hence why trigger warnings exist. If you've read and enjoyed this novel, that's great. Just because I can't doesn't mean you can't either. But to come and say that others' feelings or point of view are "exaggerated", just because they don't match yours, speaks more to your mindset than it does mine.

***Unedited Original review***

Beautiful translation, and was enjoying it till that hateful ML showed up.

My opinion and rating? Purely emotional.

So... as it goes for all personal reviews, take it with a grain of salt. Read the chapters available and decide then. Meanwhile here's what I think.

it's a transmigration novel where MC wakes up to scum in-laws and a "nice" ML who went to war and apparently died there, leaving her with his awful family and infant daughter. She decides to leave and make a life of her own. It's the summary and interesting to read up to there.

You get pretty cool moments with the MC and the kids life and then the supposedly dead ML shows up... and in the span of a few chapters, walks all over her, proceeds to dismantle any plan and mesures she had previously put in place in order for her to live safely and independently as a single mother with three children in ancient time... ALL IN THE NAME OF LOVE.

And no, ML is not a yandere (a.k.a chronically brain-damaged guy who needs a shield woman to reign him in), nahhh. Our boy here just thinks that as his wife she belongs by his side, that she is obviously incapable of taking care of herself as women are too weak (and implied s*upid) and needs a man to take care of her... So just plain old misogynistic rethoric. Oh, and he also proceeds to stalk her home, force entry into her house, destroys her cover as a widow by telling his neighbour he is her "man", she leaves and then he tries to follow her to her second house, and when he falls into her b**by traps and fails to find her, he then gets help from his military men to destroy the traps and manages to find her second house.

Y'all, reading it left me with this big ball of dread and anger in my stomach. And here is the KICKER, all of this is told by the author in a very well-meant to be, lighthearted and slightly comedic tone with a pretty complacent MC and a ML whose behaviour is portrayed as just somewhat awkward, and "overprotective" and not proof of his utter lack of respect towards her.

No. Just no. Normalizing and rationalizing stalkers and entrapment and describing it as a type of simply misguided form of love and care is a travesty.

Had the MC been given just a smidgen of choice or a voice in the decision process of the ML, I might have been more tolerant of it but there was none there. Plus, everything happening so quickly (just a few chapters) just emphasizes how much he steamrolled her and left me with the feeling of a fish-bone stuck in my throat.

I can take author who write pretty messed up characters but I can't stand author who write messed up characters and try to pass it off as normal behaviour. For me it's the difference between make-belief and the author's real life view and values seeping through their fictional writing. And when their value and mine clashes, well... you got this.

Maybe I took it too personal, maybe it gets better but I saw red and couldn't keep on reading.

After reading this story, I think ML wasn't as bad as others said, mainly because as a man who was born in ancient era who was raised as a chauvinist man, he was considered as a gentleman. But from the POV of modern people, ML was indeed still not in an acceptable range so it's inevitable for MC, who was an independent woman in the modern era, to despise him in the beginning.

Was ML wrong to act like a normal man in ancient era? Well, I don't think so. Don't... more>> forget that ML was raised that way by his family and the society at that time also valued man more than woman. At that era, it's normal for men to work outside to provide his family while women was at home to raise children so it wasn't that ML was looking on down on MC but he was just born with that belief. However, ML was willing to change for MC so don't be too hard on him.

I also love how the couple wasn't greedy of power, including their children. They contended with what they had and even thought that having too much power was troublesome and risky (one mistake and the whole family could get beheaded). It's a pity that the Xiao family's ending was only mentioned briefly and I didn't even get to see the face slapping moment where ML cut ties with them. <<less

Interesting. The Male Lead is funny. He doesn't want divorced when he can. Like other story he can married above his class just like his exwife suggested. He won't married other woman, he was trying to won her back.

The female lead also has strong character. She is protecting her children and never surrender.

I hope they can be together though. The Male lead is to honest and naive.

Started ok, although a bit odd. It was good for a while, enjoyed the slice of life, her interaction with the kids, his earnest attempts to get back into her life, and such. But then the pace suddenly changed, shortcuts taken, out of place scenes and out of character actions start to appear here and there, I began to skip things from here on, especially that something big happened that took out an annoying character out in a very graphic and strange way, I was like what the hell is... more>> this....

Following that is a huge shortcut to 12 years later with everything abruptly concluded in totally, outrageously, dreamily good, as if a 12 years long of golden shower of good luck has poured on the family. Finally it ended in a completely unbelievable way, with them being buddies with the emperor, with them being so wealthy like Midas. What the heck of a story. Thankful to the translator, but the story itself is not my cup of tea. Or rather, the tea was switched to something different. <<less

This is a decent (good) slice of life novel. The writing is actually really good. The way the author began the story, introduced various side characters and let the FL/ ML recall any past happenings were very well written. And with the FL being a fire fighter and knowing survival skills, it makes an interesting storyline. What’s more, it is really well paced.

I wouldn’t say it fits into any genre of slice of life because the story was simply too short for it to be developed into any direction. But... more>> if I would HAVE to fit it in a genre, it’ll be child care and a very very very mild business management (in the sense that she sold mountain produce to survive).

The plot was very compact. Not the most interesting (that’s why it lacks one star, I’m tryna restructure my ratings, but based on my old ratings, it’ll be a 5 star. But I think this novel is a 3.8 - 4.0 star quality novel) but at least there’s a plot! I enjoyed how the author compacted what could have made up an additional 50 or so chapters worth of story into the last chapter!

The entire storyline is as follows:

Spoiler

The FL starts off being kicked out of her (dead) husband’s home because the greedy family members wanted the severance payment all to themselves and because they don’t wanna feed her nor her 6 months old child. And the FL manages to con her way into getting some of the money and taking her belongings away along with a letter of divorce. She traveled north with other refugees (because it was drought/flood/ war season), picked up a few children along the way and in the end settled in the mountains. Her protagonist halo kicked in and she stumbled upon a ready made well hidden stone house with a natural dry area, a freezer and a hot spring of sorts with a bed that can lay 10 people, urns that can preserve stuff and tables. She was living her tough yet pleasant and merry life with the kids in the mountains, earning lucrative earnings by selling medicinal herbs and snakes. One day when she entered the city she bumped into her deceased husband. Apparently, the military accidentally sent out a death report because they thought he couldn’t survive. He pestered her all the way and refused to let her leave which resulted in her missing her ride home and had to walk with the children. In the end he stayed at her place and refused to leave so she conned him and left him behind (she owned a house in the village but their main residence is in the mountain). Later on he managed to find her mountain residence and he worms his way into their lives and the FL slowly fell in love with him. Somewhere along the line some brain dead antagonist pops up and braindeads everywhere (and hot damn the stuff she spews is NEXT LEVEL). Then, the bad people came and was led to the FL by the antagonist but the FL manages to escape and was found by the ML. The ML set off to war, she got rich and the children grew up and then happily ever after then the end.

[collapse]

For the characters, the FL is the I’m an independent girl who won’t owe no one any favours. A point the author keeps harping on is that the FL won’t accept charity and won’t owe anyone favours. But one thing enjoyable about her is that she wasn’t too Mary Sue until the last fast forward chapter. Her golden fingers were her skills as a fire fighter (which is quite realistic) and her s*upid luck (but it wasn’t annoying dumb luck). She’s quite realistic about life and doesn’t seek fortune and fame, just safety for her and her family.

The ML was really hateful at first, especially when he didn’t let the FL leave and kept insisting that they were husband and wife and wouldn’t let go. And because I read xXLicorneXx (which almost stopped me from picking up the novel), I disliked him even more and really didn’t want him to be with the FL. After a few chapters, where the ML started sharing the FL’s burdens and caring for her, he grew to be more acceptable and became a lovable husband and father to the family.

After reading finish, I’ve dissected his character and just placed him under the headstrong dumb ox, golden retriever ML type. We’ve actually seen these types of ML quite often especially with a tsundere FL, which requires persistent effort to be won over. These kind of guys in reality would be labelled as a stalker but hey it’s a novel right? Most of the characters we read about ain’t all that good if their characteristics were to be manifested in people in reality. Anyways the reason why he’s so hateful is because of the way he reacted when he found the FL which resulted in us having a bad impression of him. Other than that, he is actually a decent ML. He knows that she’s very capable and she doesn’t need him in her life and that he basically brings nothing but labour to the family so he helps her out and does his best to be there for her. His reaction towards the extra children was logical and he also came around, caring for them equally. So if you managed to get past his hateful actions in the beginning, I think one would enjoy the novel.

Also, xXLicorneXx’s review was a wee bit exaggerated, the ML really wasn’t that bad.

1. He didn’t dismantle the safety plans and measure, he “figured it out” with his subordinates (which led to some stuff but I honestly think it’s the dumb subordinates fault tbh). It’s like figuring out a pathway to a maze kinda thing.

2. “His wife belongs by his side and is incapable of taking care of herself and needs a man to take care of her”. He doesn’t think that his wife is incapable of taking care of herself or that women are weak. Instead after he found out about how she’s living, he knows that she is so capable that she doesn’t even need him so he tries hard to be useful. Even his friends implied that bro get your sh*t together coz she can do so much better without you. As for thinking his wife belongs with him, he does have that mindset. I think he is trying to be responsible here (think ancient people mindset and this boy got a dumb one track mind) and the author made it so that it’s to the point that it’s pestering, annoying and a little forceful which made readers dislike him because he doesn’t listen to her (and because the author made the FL very adamant about being against the relationship, like usually this type of NO is written for the ex husband that is not the ML if you get what mean) but it’s only at the initial part of the story.

3. “Destroys her cover as a widow and in a way destroy her reputation.” I think the author was trying to be funny here. He does remedy his wrong the very next day

4. “FL has no choice or voice in the decision of the ML” Yeah initial he was like I will marry her back no matter what then his friend be like does she agree though and he be like oops didn’t think of it. So I think it’s the author’ character set up for him for his “growth”?

Anyways, just read everything with a pinch of salt and enjoy the novel. This really was an enjoyable slice of life novel that I’d recommend if you’re browsing by. Short, fast paced and cute. <<less

This is a very short read, so it's fast-paced. It's still a slice of life though. I feel like sometimes author gets carried away with random details, thus it becomes unnecessarily wordy, but at least it helps with the setting and allows readers to visualize and understand things more. There's some complexity in her feelings towards ML. I like that she is not completely stubborn and changes her mind according to her feelings. That is realistic. ML is imperfect and he was pretty much a victim to his family's selfishness,... more>> so that was a huge obstacle to their relationship, since his beliefs were ingrained to his head. And the time period didn't help too, since their values differ. <<less

3.5 But rounded up because this is one of my guilty pleasure favorites.

This story moves quickly as it is only 45 chapters and the romance is more falling in lust coupled with a sense of duty but it ends with the MC and ML as a happy couple (very happy with 6 biological kids & 2 adopted).

The MC is a female firefighter who ends up transmigrating into the body of a strong but average-looking farm girl just at the moment of giving birth. She suffers at the hands of her... more>> husband's family while he is off in the military. When they receive news of his death, the MC's mother-in-law practically kicks her out and gives her a letter of divorce in place of the ML. From there, she travels to a mountain to begin a new life. Along the way, she picks up 2 children and eventually discovers a huge surprise. Her husband isn't actually dead!

The ML is the husband of the MC's host body. He only spent 20 days with her before being shuffled off to the military but has never shied away from the fact that she is his wife. To him, he has no intention of ever finding another woman and he begins to woo her. His part of the story is really about finding a new home with her.

Storyline-wise, it's a bit different than the usual transmigration as it doesn't descend into the MC being super quick-witted or a super cook. She does have some skill with an "outdoors" kind of lifestyle which is all backed by her previous life as a Firefighter but most of the story is really all about luck.

Spoiler

She managed to find a "hut" in the mountain that was perfect to live in. There is also coincidentally a hot spring near there. She managed to find snakes, critters, plants; basically, anything that she could make money off or eat, she could find. Plus there were also people that were willing to buy what she was selling. Like it was relatively easy for her to adapt to living in the middle of nowhere with three children.

[collapse]

The children are cute and the interactions between them and the ML were rather entertaining.

Spoiler

He's a little hostile at first given that his wife shouldn't have more children besides the daughter between them. Then he views the son as his "love rival" but this all changes when someone threatens to beat the child to death. From that point on, he pretty much sees the adopted kids as his.

[collapse]

Everything is on track for a short romp through a slice of life but then the ending gets super dark. Like DC Universe super dark. Like this needs a trigger warning for r*pe level of dark.

Spoiler

A woman was lusting after the ML and plotted to convince him that she was better than his wife. Unfortunately, she was found by spies/soldiers from another country first. They killed her carriage driver and her maid so she hatches the plan to lead them up the mountain to the MC's home. So she reveals she's the sister of one of the generals and talks up the MC so that they would make the MC a hostage instead of her.

Upon arrival, she literally threatens the MC to open the door and says how the men were going to r*pe the MC to death and then use the three kids as "two-legged lambs" (as in the men were going to roast and eat the children). This woman doesn't use the few opportunities she has to escape but the MC and the kids manage to escape.

In the end, the woman ends up gang-banged/raped to death.

[collapse]

After that, we get a small jump to the future where we see how the ML dealt with his family, how the MC set up a luxury vacation spot (that even the emperor likes to visit) and how she has become one of the wealthier people in the Dynasty. Also, the adopted son is apparently a genius but only wants to complete the exams for tax purposes.

It's a fun little read as long as you ignore the fate of the female antagonist. <<less
