Angela was my friend. I wanted to give anything to her, who I thought more precious than my own family. And I eventually turned Angela, a lowly aristocrat from the countryside, into the flower of the capital society. But it was betrayal that came back. She sold me and my family to become an imperial princess.

“Did you have to go this far?”

“Because I wanted you to be unhappy. I wanted to take your whole life away.”

But when I thought I had died under the guillotine, I was surprisingly back in the past.

“Oh, hello. My name is Angela Vito…”

“You’re Angela! Nice to meet you. Everyone was waiting for you.”

With a bright smile, I held her hands together again.

I just read the manhua. But the story has major flaws.

It's a classic revenge story where the MC return to the past after a betrayal. But there is just no balance between MC and her nemesis.

I underline characteristics who have bad influence on the character in the story

MC is :

  • The only daughter of one of the most influential family
  • Live in the capital
  • Pretty
  • Rich
  • Has a good reputation
  • Has connection with peoples
  • Know the future to some extent. It's her second time, after all
  • Too influenced by her knowledge about the future
  • Has a great education
  • Has trust friends and allies
In opposition Angela, the antagonist start with :

  • The daughter of a hero of war, but his title was only baron
  • Live in the countryside until the start of the story
  • Gorgeous
  • Poor
  • Has no reputation
  • Has no connection to any nobles or anything
  • Don't know the future
  • Has no education
  • Has one trust friend (but lose it at the beginning)
  • Has a secret cheat item (I don't name it for not spoil)
  • Has a manipulative skill (level beginner)
At the starting point, Angela can't compare to Jayna the MC. Angela's schemes are either already know by Jayna since it's the second time, either easily destroy by Jayna with her overwhelming capacity.

Example of Jayna know the future... more>>
Spoiler

Jayna know that after a certain tea party, her reputation sink. So she contacts the organizator, her friend, and propose to do a masked tea party. Masked, she assists at Angela putting her down with manipulation before reveling herself. Angela leaves and Jayna explain to others what really happen about the "mistreatment" Angela was talking about. Since Jayna purposely buy a ton of things for her in public, she clear her name and Angela start to have a bad reputation.

Example of Jayna ability
Spoiler

Jayna doesn't want Angela to shine. So she sabotages her chance to be the muse of a stylist by manipulating the stylist's fiance to break up and court Angela. Then she uses her family name to threaten the stylist to protect Angela from her wrath. Cutting their relationship in the root while pretended to be her allied.

[collapse]

Angela just can't do anything. All her scheme is already known to some extent by Jayna. She doesn't have power or money, no trust allies to help her, the one she has was quickly remove by Jayna and replace by a spy. Her manipulative skill is akin to a beginner. She knows how to cry and being pitiful, but that all. She doesn't know how to use logic to manipulate others, neither how to make other people look bad even if they didn't do anything.

I know that Angela is the bad guy, I understand that, and I don't pity her. But she is so helpless that it's more a bullying than revenge at this point. If she has more card to play, the story could be interesting.

If I take "The vilainess return the hourglass" as example. We have a protagonist who return to the past and try to get her revenge too. But she is the daughter of a prostitute who marry a count. She doesn't have education, even in the first timeline since she didn't want to learn at the time, she regretted it later and obtain it after her return. She is look down because of her origin, has no friends, no money on her own. Her sister is the exact opposite, she is the rightful daughter of the house, rich, educated, fiance to a future duke, trust and loved by everyone. But MC has two things her sister don't, she knows the future, and she is intelligent.

MC starts to learn, to make connections, make friends and especially that all that will be her foundation to her revenge. She didn't win every time either. Even when she almost stole her sister fiance, the duke family interfere to separate them. She did struggle to win, it's not served in a silver plate like Jayna.

It's a shame the author didn't give Angela any worth as the antagonist. <<less

I enjoy this series but the antagonist is weak. It's a satisfying overpowered revenge tale, the FL has all the cards after her return to the past. I can't say its a masterpiece because the stakes never feel particularly raised, but I still enjoy the series and I definitely enjoy the fact that the FL shows no remorse.

I have only read the manhwa (ch 48) but I got to say, this is how a rive travel revenge plot should be!

Let me explain.

So without giving to much away, the MC is best friends with Angela and does everything for her, including guarding her from slander and even giving upon on her fiance for her. Only for her to realized she was no more than a pawn for Angela to get to the top and throw away. So she is executed and goes back in time, (the means... more>> for some may be too convinient but I found it better than other stories who make it too complicated).

Anyways, she swears she'll get her revenge on Angela and make her life miserable this time But (and this is the good part) she doesn't have all the answers. The MC herself says she can't she the future, so she has to act carefully. And Angel is a tough opponent even in the second life, although the MC handles her well. The more time goes on the more things are revealed do we don't know everything from the get go. The suspense is maintained. Another good example of this is "The villainess turned the hourglass". All in all I give it a 4/5. <<less
