Beryl Gardernant is a humble sword master who runs a dojo in the Reveris Kingdom.

He had come to terms with the limits of his strength and was living a leisurely life in the countryside.

However, his life changes drastically when Alexia, one of his former students, suddenly visits him and tells him that she has recommended Beryl to be a special instructor within the nation’s Knight Order.

He is reunited with his former students who have become big-shots such as knight captains, top-ranking adventurers, and ace magicians, and he is kicked out of his family’s dojo.

Turbulent times were ahead of him.

Beryl was happy that his former disciples adore him, but he is also humble about the fact that he is not very strong.

However, while he wasn’t aware of it, he was the owner of an unparalleled talent.

Unconscious of his power, Beryl is surrounded by ex-disciples who know of his strength, and gradually makes himself known to the world, all the while remaining rather unaware of all of this.

Bless me for having the patience to read this far.

The story is going nowhere. The MC is incompetent. I don't care how his disciples respect him, or how OP he is; it's a fact that he always made blunders, and somehow everything went exactly like he wants.

What use is his swordmanship if all he does is making blunder? How could he thought that he was a 'mediocre' yet he held himself back in fight, even against a master swordsman? Where's your 'mediocre'-mentality, MC?

Spoiler

He fought against Church Knight who was pretty good at fencing, got cornered multiple times... until his disciple came and helped him. After his disciple left him to pursue the fleeing bishop, MC utterly owned the Church Knight in few (3-4) paragraphs, as if his previous struggle (2 chapters long) was a complete bullcr@ps

[collapse]

Have you ever seen someone who think himself as a mediocre yet held back in competition because, who knows, maybe he knew he was too good at it compared to his enemies?

Get your sh¡t together, author. The inconsistencies are so mind-boggling it's not even funny. <<less

The good parts of this novel are as follows: the translator does a great job translating the story into English, it is easy to read, and few to no errors are left when the chapters are posted. The story arcs are relatively short, and in the 83 chapters I've read, we've gone through 5 or 6 arcs, and had a bunch of past students and new characters introduced. The story is a slow-life/forced to be heroic following the MC, which makes for a light and easy to digest read.

The neutral... more>> parts of this novel are as follows: currently, it is a harem story in the sense that there are a bunch of women surrounding the MC, but he doesn't see them as potential lovers, but as his past students or potential trouble. The female characters in this story seem to have a thing for the MC, and are willing to disrupt the MC's daily life for their own purposes. Due to the completely average assumption of the MC, it is relatively easy to place yourself in the MC position when reading - but then you might get frustrated with the lack of personality of the MC.

This is where the bad parts of the story lie in my opinion. The story is about a 45-year old man who cosplays as a doormat in a fantasy world. He thinks he has average talent in swordsmanship, average strength, average looks, average capabilities, and above average talent in teaching. He has no real personality except for thinking he's an old man who should be left alone. A quick spoiler:

Spoiler

The story starts with the MC living at his family sword dojo, where his father is wondering when the MC will get a wife and give him grandkids. Then he gets forced to come to the capitol by one of his past students, a beautiful woman, 15-20 years younger than him, to be a special instructor of the knights. He accepts because the king appointed him to the position that his student decided he needed. He only has to go a few times a month, so no big deal, except his dad suddenly decides to kick him out, take back the dojo that was already left in his management, and appoint a different past student as head of the dojo in the MC's place. The MC, like all doormats, takes this crap with a smile and just moves to the capitol, with no words of complaint spilled.

[collapse]

The MC is caught up in a bunch of different situations, all brought about by his past students, and even says he always has a hard time declining anything. This would be totally okay if we were talking about a young man, or a child, or anyone with limited life experience that is used to being under the control of other people. But the MC is both an established adult, someone who has taught swordsmanship for over 20 years, ran the dojo solo for an undisclosed amount of time, used his swordsmanship skills to kill monsters and wild beasts that threaten his home village, and his dojo was so successful that people from all over came to be taught by the MC and he even reformed delinquent or problem kids. This absolutely feels like the author just slapped a background together to justify the "old-man" trope, while intentionally writing him like a teen who has been abused by his surroundings into being a compliant little robot who can't even voice his complaints.

The female characters are both bland and manipulative, even going as far as using their connections with people in a higher political position to 'force' the MC to do things he otherwise would not do. On the rare occasion that the MC attempts to decline in any way, generally before he actually says something, someone says 'the guildmaster' or 'the king' or 'we vouched for you' and the MC just decides it can't be helped and does whatever is asked of him, despite saying to himself how little he wants to do those things. Likely, if someone were to say, 'my mother's brother's wife's cousin's nephew's friend said you should do it' the MC would agree to do the task.

Spoiler

There was one point where the MC attempted to deny doing something. He asked if other people who be capable of capturing a bishop of a church that was doing illegal s*ave trading. The MC was convinced to do it by a priest of the same church who wanted the bishop's position, and the leader of the magic department for the country to MC lives in. He was convinced by them saying it might cause a diplomatic issue if the knights go, or if the magicians go, but the MC spontaneously forgot about the adventurer's guild, and the black plate ranked (the highest rank in the adventurer's guild) disciple of the MC who already owes the MC a favor.

[collapse]

This story gets 1 star due to the translator's capabilities, and 1 star because the story is easy to digest. Looking at it as fairly as I can, the story feels like it would be something that is read because nothing else was available. If the MC didn't frustrate me so much, I would likely only feel apathy for the story. <<less

I think I'm going to let this one go. The premise is amusing and at first I enjoyed the story. The main character is crazy humble and it makes for some funny situations. Unfortunately, the story devolved into cliche/tropey harem antics which I just find irritating (squabbling between harem members, disregarding what MC actually wants despite being madly in love with him, etc, etc). I won't rate this because I am fully aware that disliking standard harem tropes is a personal pet peeve. If you like the typical harem setup,... more>> you will very likely enjoy this story quite a lot. <<less

Looks like I’m the odd one out lol. But I gotta say as a 30-some year old this book feels comfortable. It feels more like a diary about the daily life of an old geezer, like me, so I enjoy it. Definitely not a very hot-blooded read though, I agree. But I’m looking forward to when the author, if not dropped, introduces a true love interest (the disciples all just feel like his daughters or nieces, no s*xual awareness from him at all), and finally discovers his self worth (really... more>> want more background on what happened when he was an adventurer!).

Excellent translation, world building could use some more detail (currently very basic fantasy trope), and needs definite character development (@ this chapter he finally feels like he has some worth but only a little bit) suggested for those who enjoy slow paced stories, think Aria (the one about akira the undine). <<less

Average jp harem novel, with all the cliches you would expect.

The MC is the usual spineless protagonist that everyone pushes around, and he can't stand up for himself at all.

All the characters have the personality of a wet paper, and if the author were to switch the names when they speak, you would never notice the difference.

The background and lore is none existent, and descriptions of people, places and events is even lower.

This might as well could have been computer generated with how little originality there is

It's an interesting novel! It's mostly slice of life, and the story revolves around a 40 year old swordsman getting into various military and political crises. There are some issues along the way, like how most of the romance targets are 10-15 years younger than the MC and how frequently the MC treats 40 year olds like they're too old to try new things or be creative, but overall it's a solid novel. The translation quality is good, as well.

Completely average beta harem tale about a mental abused old man (mid life in modern times) whose has no self confidence, no self awareness and is possibly born with Asperger's. His old man, put him thru mental abuse telling him he's no good and that he's just average. Not a new storyline, but it usually involves younger MCs, so that's where this one is a little different.

This is a tale that gets VERY TIRING, reading "I'm an old man and I'm average" over and over and over and over. Hey... more>> old man, if you're only average why do ppl travel to BFE to go train with you. How can you keep up with a dangerous monster or top tier adventurer. Seriously, the more I read it, the more upset and annoyed I get. So if that's how you react to self loathing MCs, skip this one. <<less

I read up to c15 before skipping ahead to read 72 through 75 to see if it improved. It did not. Don't bother reading this unless you are utterly obsessed with fantasy harem LNs.

This is just another LN with an extremely dense and passive boy being constantly praised by several beautiful and powerful childhood friends. I know he is supposed to be a full-grown man, but he's not. Technically the childhood friends are students but since nobody has a real personality or backstory, you can imagine that the MC is... more>> a teenager or 20-something and the harem candidates are childhood friends he separated from and the story will still work. It actually makes the MC more tolerable that way. Because the MC is supposed to be a genius sword master with little to no knowledge of things outside his village. Also he is socially awkward. Also seems to have no experience with being romantically involved with a woman. Also the current story is about him starting a new life in the capital after being kicked out of his parents' house. And yet somehow I am supposed to believe that he is a 40 year old man. Basically the author wrote that MC is 40 either to justify the MC being interested in women but weirdly passive or as part of his own fetish. Either way, the MC talks and acts like a young man, but tired. That's the best way I can describe it.

To make matters worse, the MC's humble belief that he is a mediocre swordsman gets annoying pretty quickly. It would have been neat as a learning opportunity, "MC is strongest in his village but thinks that others are stronger in the city. Only to find that he is the strongest in the city too." Unfortunately he never has that realization. Even 70 chapters later he is still saying how average he is. Even though he interacts with the strongest knights in the country every day and is clearly a better swordsman, to the point that he is their teacher. Ultimately it comes back to what I said before. This is the same fantasy LN you have read a hundred times before. Some kid with weirdly low self esteem is surrounded by ridiculously attractive women who worship the ground he walks on. The author tried to make it sound different by saying he is 40 but didn't bother to change anything else. Didn't even bother to make the "man" act like he is actually 40. <<less

This started out alright and in line with the premises, yet several arcs in the MC hasn't made any progress or independent choices. If you want the same sort of thing over and over, it's pretty much as labeled.

It was initially interesting to see the combat and how the matchups reinforced the humility of the MC, but after so many victories, that sort of humility is just arrogance. If you think you're average but you win every battle, then that's insulting to your opponents. There were also multiple instances where... more>> he talks about holding back when there really should not be the leeway to do so.

I really enjoyed seeing the times where he loses his cool and goes all out, but then he's back to his bumbling persona without motivation or interest in much of anything.

As of right now I plan to keep reading with the hope that the trickle of changes eventually build up to him having any inkling of interest in living and trying to meet someone or that one of his admirers actually tries to romance him, but it has become very underwhelming with how little he tries. <<less
