The synopsis doesn't do this story justice; it seems like the story will be a bunch of light-hearted fluff. However, both the MC and ML have issues that they slowly decide to work through for their own sakes (rather than for the unhealthy shoujo justification of doing anything for their potential love interests). Surprisingly, there are also some mysteries, mostly political, ongoing and alluded to.

In fact, I find the MC and ML back stories rather dark and cried more than once. They're hearts are in the right places!!! I am... more>> eagerly awaiting for the MC to be vindicated and for some hearty face-slapping, but this story could easily go the tragedy route.

Don't get me wrong; although this seems more mature than the typical shoujo, it still hasn't crossed over to josei territory. There are more light-hearted moments than dark, the latter was naturally increased as we get to know more about the characters. The author does an excellent balancing act between actual plot and romantic moments. The side characters are also interesting and their interactions with the MC are superb.

This novel is not for people who has only been reading fluffy stories. With a narrow mindset, you'll hate the MC's personality, and the pacing of the novel. But you know what? It works.

Her personality is justified, since she is an aristocrat (and many more, but find that out yourself), and works with the pacing.

"Ehh, this novel is so slow why is there still no improvements between her and the male lead? Why is she being treated like that? Why does the male lead doesn't do anything about it?"

Excuse me,... more>> are we even reading the same novel? Do you even know her personality? Have you even met people?? This novel is quite realistic, if I may say so myself. It works for me, and for anyone who has gotten tired of the cliche "exiled, and then woww, immediately liked by so many and even pitied by possible love interests".

This novel respects the characters so much and the natural chemistry between them just makes the story extraordinary. Personally, I never read anything like this, since main characters with an unlikable personality are really hard to come by, and if you do see one, in the middle they just start being kind or something, as if their character was all nothing but a lie.

Their interactions are natural and are to be expected, especially with the MC's stronghead nature. Basically, if you want an emotionally strong character, try this. It does well in showing that there is more to people despite their stubborn self, and as annoyed as I was at first, I couldn't help but love the MC as I come to understand her.

Definitely a new experience for me, wish there was more like this. <<less

Contrary to popular belief, there is no reverse harem. So BIG plus. (Harem implies that all leads are in love with MC, not just "being around them"). A love "V" is hardly a harem.

Yeah, its pretty harsh. Especially the MC. I won't spoil it too much, but to expect lots and lots of persecution. I mean wholly shit, does it get you frustrated. You understand it. It is realistic. Rumors are bad but, this just hits home with how really frustrating it can get. Don't expect much catharsis.

But that's all... more>> part of real life. In fact, compared to every other "villainess" story out there, this is simply the most realistic portrayal of a human possible. Why? Because you can feel that the MC is a real complex character, and not just a 2D caricature. And she doesn't have any special powers. I mean like none. She can literally be the "normal" person sitting next to you. No isekai, no OP magic, none like that. Just a straight up ordinary person, with a bit more rash. Everything you would expect a teenage girl to be.

Expect slow romance development. But that's a plus. Its important that its slow. I'm reading this for people falling in love until the point they officially get together.

Expect realistic portrayals of human nature or behavior (especially for the MC). I can't stress this enough. She is the most realistic portrayal of a human ever, in any series. The author has a better understanding of human nature, and a less romanticized view on "love". Because yeah, in real life it takes months or years to "let go" or some times never.

The ending is expected, but doesn't disappoint. Its the ride that is most important. But the great ending doesn't help. It certainly isn't a weak ending. I think it handles relationships pretty well.

I recommend this 100%, 10/10, re-read again.

It's good, yeah, but it has one big problem.

As of chapter 41, it's been the MC getting unfairly treated nonstop with little-to-no payoffs. That's just under a third of the entire story with all of the build-ups for a good face-slap or two, but without the actual face-slapping.

Either the MC backs down to prove that she isn't a bad guy, or her husband-to-be does all of the work for her.

It's surprisingly good.

First of all, I just want to refute Thousandswor's review and say this is not a reverse harem story.

There's no harem at all.

Secondly, Camilla, our MC, is one of the most lovable MC in this genre. She's not the cunning kind nor the dense kind. She simply do things passionately. And she's a real tough cookie. I was expecting a 1D-ish cookie cutter MC, and was pleasantly surprised that this aint the case at all. Camilla is a multifaceted, flawed heroine. Her personality feels real, and the... more>> her struggle is relatable to some extend. You'll be rooting for her.

Thirdly, One reviewer point out that the "there's no face slapping" and "the duke couldn't even protect her from his maids". That's because this novel really isn't about face-slapping or being an untouchable goddess of revenge by hugging a big thight. Gossips are nasty, and I love how the author potrays it's snowballed effect to our heroine. Because of that, the romance is a slow-burn. The ML is not all powerful--heck, the MC doesn't even really need saving. There would be some frustating moment, but that's exactly the point. Her situation is pretty much believable.

Fourth, I honestly thought that this novel would be full of body shaming. I gritted my teeth through several earlier chapter, and after finishing it, I'm more of the opinion that it's just a product of the MC's flawed belief and character. It's because, the one who really see the ML's constitution as a problem was just the MC, others doesn't really see much problem in that.

When reading a vilainess noble girls stories, I want to see a passionate, and/or borderline obsessive MC since it's basically a story about obsession to the point of ruination. It's nice to see that this novel, although mild and totally not to the point of "obsession", pretth much deliver. But I have to warn you--plot holes are still there, and some of the chapters are honestly not necessary.

Read this if you're looking for a light-hearted story. And yes, the frustations are still in the category of ''light-hearted", so you won't bawl your eyes out.. <<less

It likely isn't a story I should be crying about but I couldn't stop my overflowing tears. The situation the MC is in is completely undeserved and yet she is still able to face the world; it might not be much but that takes a lot of courage when the whole world hates you.

I really like her character she may come off as harsh due to her sharp words and face but she is genuinely a good person. Whatever she did to the heroine was in a way defense and... more>> because she was blinded by love. She had all sorts of things pinned on her as she became a scapegoat and her own parents abandoned her. But I digress, the best thing about this novel is the character growth and how the characters interact with each other.

They all grow as people and as they grow the way they interact reflects that. The love between the MC and ML isn't a love at first sight situation. It grows slowly and takes root firmly. This is likely why they seem really human.

Then again this is just my opinion but I really recommend picking this story up! <<less

Skip or skim my review as usual if you'd like to read this with completely fresh eyes (which I actually highly, highly, recommend!)

This is absolutely amazing. It's a far cry from my usual tastes in depressing, heavily politically novels, and there hasn't been any massive tragedy. And still this novel is absolutely amazing. It excels in its genre and I grew to love it for the world building - the magic, the light, the kingdom -, the story - it takes a commonly overused plot, tossed out any reincarnation,... more>> and made it entirely believable - and, most of all, the characters. For the other common tropes it uses (misunderstandings, appearances, bullying), the execution is astoundingly good.

If there's one way to win over my interest, it's how the characters are written. And Camilla did exactly that; she stole my heart. Both of the main leads aren't carbon-copied of their other "Villainess Nobles" novels, and they have so much more depth to them than what they appear on the surface. Alois isn't defined by his weight, and certainly not by his appearance. Camilla has faults that drags her down, and she's that much more human. The way the events are written makes you feel for her. But while I've felt angry and bitter and proud on her behalf, I never felt pity for this protagonist. Instead, I feel admiration. Even the romance is a slow-cooked, believable one.

What's more is that the characters change. And rather than being given it freely or forcing it out through threats and fear, Camilla earns respect. That makes everything so much better.

I finally finished reading the (very well-done) translations, and its pacing and ending was as satisfying as could be, never being drawn out past its purpose. Without a doubt, I'd recommend this if you want to read something both relaxing and relatable. <<less

Way too slow. I'm not talking about their relationship but the progress of the novel. In the latest chapter, she's hasn't prove anything which is very annoying. She is still being completely looked down on and she can't even clarify herself, so what's the point of here so called revenge if she's not doing anything to change it. The duke is even useless. He can't even fully support the MC. He can't even stop his servants from mistreating their supposed to be Mistress. I mean thats the least thing you... more>> could do but mehh how dumb <<less

I hate the male lead with all my heart and soul. It's not that he's ugly, it's not that he's manipulative: he's absolutely spineless and a terrible, useless lord. Some examples:

  • Despite having a delicate palate, forces himself to eat disgustingly made food because he does everything the head maid says
  • Despite wanting his fiancee to feel welcomed, he's totally ok with all his servants refusing to serve her
  • Allows them to put her in a shitty, dusty, moldy room carrying her luggage herself
  • Is disrespected by all the people he rules over:

    after a mining disaster orders a city to halt mining, they continue to do so regardless, leading to an even worse disaster

He's basically ordered around by all the old and influential people around him. He's the weakest male lead out of every novel I've ever read. He's very wealthy yet all the people he cares about live in squalor, like the old lady in the orphanage having no one to help her and all the orphans being despised by the towns people. He has no authority, he has no personality, and he has not improved one bit through the novel. It's a depressing read.

I really tried reading this. I really did. But there is a reason as to why I avoid reading otomes where the protagonist has or was about to become a true villainess. My stomach just could not handle the amount of pain I personally experienced from reading this novel. For those like me who prefer the perfect “balance” in their stories, this novel is not for you. I don’t like stories with pure fluff or s*upidity either, but the amount of s*upidity and hate that continued to come in without... more>> enough hand tingling romance to back it up was too much for me. Personally any more reading this and I will literally throw my phone to the ground.

Yes, I know that I shouldn't be writing something like this based on pure emotions. But when a novel has made me ever more infuriated than the other novel in which I know is very bad *cough Kumo Desu-ga cough*, but at least made me want to make a proper and logical review on, it says something. I’ll probably edit this entire thing later once I calm down, but god. I don’t care if a novel has the most tragic elements in the world, but everything needs a balance. Otherwise not only will the characters themselves will feel the pain, but so will the readers too, but in a bad way. It’s like trying to read poorly translated novels as hard as you can, but because of the quality your level of enjoyment is at a all time minimum. <<less

Only read a few chapters and dropped it because my blood was boiling and I couldn't keep going.

Camilla is actually a softy with a lot of pride. She fell into someone's schemes, so she got her reputation ruined, kicked out of the capital and potentially betrothed to a fat duke. I say potentially because in the beginning of the novel she wasn't even the duke's official fiancé yet. So even though she was living at the duke's mansion, she had no power there whatsoever.

Yes, that's one of the main sources... more>> of why it's so upsetting. She has no power in the mansion, so even the maids can bully her. She's supposed to be a noblewoman, but even a maid can talk tr*sh to her face and she can't do anything about it.

What a lot of people (characters in the novel and readers equally) don't seem to realize is that she isn't really a villainess. The only thing she did was fall in love with the prince and use her family background to get closer to the prince. That's it. She never did anything evil. She never hurt anybody and from the little hints here and there, it seems that she was rather kind hearted instead. I thought the duke might've realized it, so that's why he never got angry at her when she ran her mouth, but nope. I was wrong.

I thought at least her and the duke's relationship was going to develop sweetly, but no. Every time Camilla tries to have the duke make slight changes towards a more healthy lifestyle, he brushes her off and plays her for a fool. He won't even support her or back her up! He even would get angry at her when it isn't even her fault and berate her and she wouldn't even be able to clarify the situation herself!

Once after the servants bullied her, they went to the duke and vilified her and the duke told them to be tolerant because she has nowhere to go and he only took her in because he pitied her, but she's easy to handle so there's no need to make such a fuzz about it! Of course Camilla heard it and as any other normal human being she decides to leave. What human being with an ounce of self-respect wouldn't??? Later, he goes to find her all angry and screams at her for being s*upid and not thinking of how much trouble she's causing everybody. Saying he gave her everything she needed but she would still complain. WHEN DID SHE EVER COMPLAIN??? But of course, she can't defend herself

To be honest, I would've rather she left and became a commoner, marry a wealthy merchant who loves her and live her life in peace. I would get annoyed at how she would just shut up and not say anything when people bullied her, but I was mostly disappointed in the duke. So much so that I couldn't even ship them.

Maybe farther into the novel there is character development and the duke becomes less hateful and she might start being able to stand up for herself, but up until where I read, I didn't see it happening for a long time. So, I gave up for the sake of my sanity.

At first I thought I thought Camilla would just be a spoiled but foolishly innocent daughter but, from the story progression, she starts to grow as Alois and her learn more about one another and help move on from a past deeper than from where the novel starts. If I read correctly, even some of the characters I thought I would hate had a redeemable quality to them which was quite pleasant.

If you're into characters with more than what's on the surface, this author's story of a love that sprouts from understanding might be for you.

Yes, I rated if 5 stars and yes, I've finished reading it (except the two extra chapters). This is one, if not the best villainess novels out there.

If you want to start the rabbit hole that is villainess stories, you'd come to the right place.

This is by far the best villainess novel I've read. I was even not sure about the reading it as the title "The Villainess Wants to Make Her Husband Slim Down" has gave me frights as there are plenty writers who cross the line from "wanting to slim down" to "being fatphobic" and have seen plenty mess that up for that matter. But the story handles this issue quite well. And what's more interesting was that Camilla, the so-called villainess, and Alois, the toad of the swamp, had been carved... more>> quite nicely as characters.

Camilla is actually a straight-forward character who speaks her thoughts. Her villainous traits that led to her fall were things she did not hide. She was headstrong and had a rough feel to her but she felt very much human. Both her mistakes and her achievements were acknowledged in the story. She had been a breathe of fresh air from all the villainess novels where the villainess had to go through scheme after scheme to win the hearts and overturn their circumstances but that was a given as the storyline starts after all the scheming was said and done and she had already been vanquished from the capital.

Although Camilla had technically been scheming to slim Alois down, saying it to his face would hardly call it scheming at all. And as the story progressed, Camilla isn't truly a cruel person, as most people are. It had been true that she had done some unsightly things but it cannot be denied that when push comes to shove, she's just a person who has done both good and bad even if she denies and acts like she had done not one bit of a good thing. The tough brand of kindness she showed people is certainly something to look forward to.

As for Alois, his character had been a seemingly resilient man who didn't mind taking a step back for the sake of others. He is a good leader to his dukedom despite this but his docile nature certainly would clash with Camilla's straightforward one. When you do first read about him, for a character who is supposedly a duke, he had felt lacking in character and backbone but what I can say is that there is so much more that meets the eye.

Alois, as the story evolves, is shown to be more than his calm and nice composure. That had been a facade, one that Camilla would learn and would definitely dislike. But what prompted me to really admire Alois as a character was that while he favored Camilla greatly, he is someone who took his responsibilities seriously even at the cost of her ire. But it had still been evident that he loved her as he tried unveiling his heart to Camilla bit by bit. The unveiling of his truest self is certainly something to look forward to.

All in all, I would give this novel a perfect score. The storyline has progressed at a smooth and steady pace and the arcs had all been built to connect to the finale. The characters had all certainly been relevant and even the minor characters had depth to them. The author had definitely done a good job at writing this! <<less

I absolutely love this novel. Great plot, great characterization, great world building, etcetera. I love how the relationship between Camilla and Alois starts out rough but slowly smoothens as they gradually understand each other. I love how Alois is not your typical handsome male lead but still managed to capture Camilla's heart and I really love their struggles to understand each other. There's much more I want to write but long story short: This novel is great and I really recommend that you read this. That's all.

I have completely MTL-ed this entire story on syosetu, wahaha! There's some plot, but not overly convoluted. The relationship between the two develops slowly, but there are cute moments. I grew to admire Camilla, and rooted for her.

I mainly left this review to remember to reread this novel.

Just a few words: Cliché setting but written by an adult so we get realistic characters and situations. No fluff, no face slapping, no rag to riches, no harem. Feels (almost) like an actual book.

A great story, an awesome plot, great characters, well designed story but more than anything it felt.. Humane.

Getting used to the web novel industry means in general getting used to the unusual, to the fantastic, to the amazing. But in truth, you get farther away from what it means to be human. Those that develop characters like they describe some robots with perfect qualities and perfect mindsets often forget about the charm of a human who learns from mistakes and evolves.

This story seemed to be your run of the mill... more>> story about a character that failed to become the heroine and instead turned into the villain. Well.. Run of the mill as everyone expected the protagonist to still turn into a heroine. The interesting thing was how much everyone beside the main character changed while the prideful yet humane protagonist remained the same, true to their own desire without becoming overly proud of their noble origins. This instead turned into a turning point in the quality of the novel as the story didn't become a fantastic one, but instead a realistic one, one that does not amaze but teach others about what it means to truly look upon oneself without ignoring the faults or the mistakes.

In the end while the protagonist was the cherry on top of the cake, one important slice was

the true villain, her sister Therese, a person who seemed to be both the true victim and the one most guilty of being the mastermind behind the fall of the protagonist.

Two words: holy shit.

This was so good I can't even fathom my thoughts into words.

Please, please do yourself a favour and read this. Or perhaps not. This has completely ruined every other novel of a similar genre for me.

the MC is getting unfairly treated nonstop with little-to-no payoffs, she backs down or the ML saves her. I assume that there is a big payoff at the end but that is 125 chapters, it is way to long.
