This story has everything in it for me. There are aspects of the story that I would find five-star quality, then there are aspects of this story that are one-star quality. Of course, this is relative to ones' own tastes.

Five Star Aspects: My most favorite thing about this story is the dialogue. You can tell the author has fully thought through a characters thought-process when writing their dialogue. Granted, this is not 100% perfect as the author is a human being. There are some mistakes, but I have been most... more>> impressed with the dialogue. Consequently, the dialogue adds richness to the plot and characterization. Each character feels pretty distinct and unique for the most part. While there are some overlapping character-types, they have unique aspects to them that differentiate them.

Regarding the plot, I can only say the author takes his time building the plot up. Each event that takes place in the story does feel as if they are separate, instead, they are connected together as if strung together. You will see threads of a plot start several hundred chapters earlier and not conclude or even continue until much later in the story. I find this pretty refreshing.

The women are also not just jade doll playthings for the MC as a reward. As a fact, the women are consistently stronger than the MC when they are introduced and are his strongest allies in whichever arc or event the MC is involved in. They do not really lose their purpose either and are brought back time and again. I find that very interesting and refreshing. You do not really find that even in Western media.

Four Star Aspects: The world is huge and it is built up pretty well. Nothing much to say about that but the scale of the world does reflect the size of the story. I also enjoy the fights. The techniques named and used are some of my most favorite to read. Even though the MC is protected by the plot and consistently comes out on top, the execution is satisfying to read. You will read the MC curb-stomp some characters, and then finally meet a match at the end or near the end and watch the MC come up with interesting tactics and methods to defeat the opponent. The fights are well executed and you get both worlds.

Three Star Aspects: The harem relationships--The author is pretty average when it comes to relationships, but there is a level of substance there. Relationships are also not a one-and-done deal as mentioned previously; however, the relationship stability is not entirely convincing. The build-up is there, but there is nothing much that shows sustainability. However, they are built on the MC doing exceptional things for them and whatnot. They also show up repeatedly and are consistently involved with the event or plot. But that doesn't mean a loving relationship can be maintained with that. But the relationship is formed after going through tough experiences, which builds tough bonds.

The MCs personality also falls in the average category. The MC's personality hardly goes through changes and transformations that he should go through based on his beliefs and or experience. The MC also hardly ever reflects on certain revelations that should obviously trigger that type of behavior. His personality also isn't really always consistent with some of his own beliefs either. He will do things to others that will infuriate him if done to him. However, when the MC is smart, he is written as smart and clever. He is definitely a gary-stu type character, but it's not exactly overbearing and it can be a fun read.

Plot devices are reused, such as arrogant young-masters, people looking down on the MC only for them to change their mind later. Granted, they are warranted since MC does s*upid things and places himself in s*upid situations. He is also shown as "weak" based on the cultivation system of the universe so it is natural for people to look down on him. That is why I don't consider this any lower. The arrogant young master trope isn't really that overbearing either and naturally fits into the scene. However, it can get excessive...

Two Star Aspects: Love and s*x is a joke in this novel. The concept of dual cultivation is there, and if that was it, that would be fine, but sometimes life-saving situations are saved through s*x, it is laughable. It is a shame too because women are otherwise written pretty well, but s*upid plot-devices are used to have the MC engage in s*xual acts so save their lives or his own life. The saving grace is that this does not happen often at all and is rarely used, which is why it is a two-star aspect for me, but the impact of its presence is strong enough that it does impact the story.

One Star Aspects: The story is a little too wordy as points are often repeated. This may or may not be a big deal though as it is nice to be reminded of certain things as a lot can go on. I can see some people being annoyed by it though.

Overall, I gave this a four-star rating. This is an enjoyable read and will pull at all sorts of emotions. You will love and hate certain aspects of the story. It does fall into the category of a wish-fulfillment story but it's one of the best-executed. <<less

ATG is one of these rare cases where you look for redeeming factors just to give it a one-star, which you then have to give anyway because zero is no option. If an author can do a mistake, mars will gladly do it. In fact I wouldn't believe you if you told me that it was meant to be a parody of the classic tropes simply because such perfection is impossible if done on puprose.

Setting: As logically broken as many other CN settings since the long timespans don't work well... more>> with status quo. It might be not as mindnumbing ret*rded as SOTR but well... its still a generic mess at best.

Characters: At this point a meme, really. It either has a pu*sy or doesn't matter. And the waifus turn from s*upid to mindless fleshlight within a few chapters. They have the average depth of a sheet of paper. Descriptions are repetive at best and insulting the readers memory at worst. I don't even know how many more oppai lolis Mars needs until his ultimate self-insert Mary Sue is done. Most of these characters act incredibly out of character the moment the MC is involved and includes the average bullsh*t like a sect master more or less ordering her virg*n elites to bang the MC. At one point a 13-year old girl was literally described as being so gorgeous that a bunch of old geezers got a boner over her. Nuff said.

Story: Ugh... where to start? The plot can almost be classified as p*rn at this point (as p*rn always has the obvious goal of getting into the action). Plot lines are predictable with the simple concept of "Mars will do the most obvious asspull for dramatic reasons". Heavenly luck? Don't insult the MC... he has more luck than that. What power differences between realms? Can I eat them? (He is legit fighting two great realms up at this point, which is the difference between a pebble and a nuke). The MC post chapter 100 or so will solve all problems with overwhelming violence, even if better options exist. His enemy has 3 cultivators which are 10 times stronger than him? No problem! Ez stomp. There is no tension in this novel since you can always assume two things: A: The MC might loose against an opponent a few billion times stronger than him but will never die (natural MC plot armor) and B: It will have no lasting side effects on him or his women. (Actually I should say girls here cuz ya know) In cases like these the way to victory is more important than the actual result. Don't worry, head-on violence solves it all. Also JC is half goku. Stronger every time he almost dies... Also uhm... damsell in distress alert. Because thats what his waifus are before they turn into mindless fleshlights. Also tournaments.

The biggest f*ckup of them all: The MC: The single worst element of the story and that is quite a statement given how bland the rest is. Its rare to see such an overpowered narcistic psychopath of a Mary Sue. A mighty and powerful item is mentioned? He either already has it or will obtain it in the future. Something is an achievement of the ages? He will at least go even or even surpass it. There is a pretty girl? Waifu aquired. More often than not with an action that would get him slapped at best. On top of that he is a ruthless bastard, just that he lacks the smarts department completely and instead is only buff (but still looks like a super weak pretty boy).

So uh... yeah. I would give it a negative score for insulting the readers intelligence but I unfortunately can't. Stay away at all cost and read something better instead. If you are an author and just wanna have a negative example then go ahead. Its perfection. <<less

I will not give this novel a 5 star rating since it is also plagued by the tag we call "Harem". This is one the MCs you will see that has a lot of love debts to many girls. He then tries to hide them after having s*x with them from his other women but they accept him anyways. He also has a big problem with his intelligence, often letting mortal enemies that will later kill his loved ones off just because of his hoes that asks him to "please... more>> forgive them once". His harem is also very s*upid apart from Jasmin who in my opinion is the smartest and only intelligent one in the group since she isn't brain dead and can see all those enemies need to be killed before they come for revenge.

Action wise, this novel is very good in that there are a lot of action scenes but not very well in the description compared to other novels that make you imagine epic battle. Scenes like "Taste my phoenix charge HAAAAA!" are very common in this novel although the story and plot make up for that in this story.

Ah, the plot is probably the only thing in this story apart from the hilarity of the ret*rded MC that keeps this story being how good it is. The plot is very deep with a lot of mystery that once solved, makes you feel awesome and the backstory is also the main part in this story and also the reason why the MC is trying to get stronger apart from needing to get revenge on his enemies that just got revenge on him because of a cycle of s*upidity.

All in all this story is not perfect but good enough to read until it's finished, while you wait for the really good stories that have a history of bad translators that only post 1 update a month, to post something new. <<less

Admittedly while I like this book a lot, I thought to outline some points that may be demerits for others if they cant stand them. I couldn't initially.

The author absolutely loves coincidences:

Spoiler

Every time the main character needs a seed like the fire seed or the devil seed, it is pretty much going to be handed to him at the right time. He gains the appropriate power ups to fight the enemy and eventually come out on top. When he needs to pose as a medical saint or fakes an old master (old man doutian) they happen to exist in real life and completely works with his disguise, though these two particular examples only happened twice so it is somewhat bearable.

[collapse]

The romance and a bit about his master:

Spoiler

It was expected to be somewhat shallow, though some unique characters eventually develop a real personality later on. Princess Cang Yue eventually suffers the assassination of her father and becomes more befitting of a monarch and is somewhat ruthless though she still remains aware of what her country needs and makes concessions others probably couldn't in Volume 7. She hates the divine phoenix sect but knows she is not in a position to retaliate.

Chu Yuechan, well she kind of disappears so not much can be said at the moment but the main character is lucky enough to probably find out she is alive. Most haven't fully read how their relationship developed, and though it is r*pe in some sense, at least it wasn't like MGA Chu Feng r*pe. She regained her cultivation and rose a realm. The author does at least give enough time for her to develop feelings for him anyway. She was crippled for months and essentially helpless, and could only depend on him so like many female characters in many other novels, it was expected to see feelings develop to some extent. She does not abandon her cultivation or get crippled as some state, she abandons her profound art willingly which still leaves her with the abilities of an emperor to some extent but I didn't really care to pay attention at that point. Admittedly her personality is pretty undeveloped among all the love intersts.

Xia Qingyue is not terrible though every time the main character has to make her actually feel something for him because she is gone for so long that her emotions are somewhat stale due to her profound art. She is another undeveloped character but considering the amount of actual time he spent with her that is stated in the novel, I wasn't expecting much out of it until much later.

Jasmine, while not yet, is expected to fall in love with him. The signs were pretty obvious. Unlike some other novels, she doesn't die and the main character doesn't attempt to revive her. She recovers in chapters 800+ but is eventually found by those looking for her (with unsavory intentions). The obvious foreshadowing throughout the novel indicated it would eventually happen and it is expected the Yun Che will go save her. Some say she is way too powerful, well they haven;t read far enough. Her power is inherited from another through special conditions. And it is hinted that she is a sacrifice (perhaps for another to get her power to collect it in one person) because after further profound power transfers it is blatantly stated that there is a loss or degradation.

The Little Demon Empress (Huan Caiyi) has by far the most noticeable personality traits. Ruthless and domineering with a soft heart for those she cares about. She was the most interesting love interest out of them all, and the relationship could actually be seen to form, at least to some degree, with Yun Che in Volume 6.

Feng Xue'r is probably a staple love interest. She is innocent and naive, trusting and utterly forgiving. She presents an all encompassing heart that would care for just about every living thing in the world.

While some of these relationships became intimate through generic means, others were somewhat forced. As one reviewer stated in Wuxia, at least the author was consistent. The golden crow pretty much states the little demon empress and Feng Xue'r must have s*x with Yun Che to either help themselves, or Yun Che, or both. That is how the relationship is either started for the former, or cemented at least for the latter. Dual cultivation makes a prominant appearance, and is even the driving force for the plot at certain times. But Yun Che was finally stated as an ideal male incubator, it isn't often the main character is indicated to be one. It is a pity it isn't really explained much.

I almost forgot Su Linger, she doesn't show up again until Volume 9 where she reunites with Yun Che. He saves her and etc. Her personality is kind of dull but that again she hasn't had a chance to develop one because the last time Yun Che saw her she was a child so not really a demerit just yet. Surprisingly for a plot twist she vaguely remembers the past Yun Che on the Azure cloud continent which brings about a bit of mystery to the story. MTL was kind of hard to understand for this though.

[collapse]

Regardless all the love interests get along surprisingly which is quite a detriment. They all just accept it but I guess emperors in the story are stated to have over 100 wives, specifically the divine phoenix sect master so it was expected they would accept it because Yun Che appears to be so powerful.

One particular pet peeve of mine was the consistent adventure into the secret realms where everyone always thought Yun Che died.

Spoiler

There was the phoenix realm, the azure dragon realm, (pseudo heavenly punishment seal with Yun Che's grandfather), Primordial Profound ark which later leads to illusory demon realm continent, and the most recent would be the devil nest in supreme ocean palace. I am not counting the one at cloud end cliff because nobody really knew about Yun Che entering it.

[collapse]

These moments were bearable, I just ignored them because of Yun Che kicking ass. One point I found a little disappointing is the versatility of the sky poison pearl. It pretty much solves everything related to the body health etc. And the main character doesn't even have to use any actual techniques to refine a pill because the treasure does it for him. While he does state that he can do them without it, I find it somewhat lackluster. Admittedly the pearl does not play a significant part in the story aside from healing Jasmine.

Spoiler

The mirror of Samsara, while it is considered a key portion in the story for various reasons, it has other secrets as indicated by when it flashes so obviously in the story. I don't remember the chapter but as of right now It pretty much does nothing. It's just a necklace that serves as a target for ignorant enemies (like Xuanyuan Wentian who doesn't know what it even does).

[collapse]

While I stated I hated the coincidences so much, later exposition leads to why there is so many realms on the blue pole star. This is a pretty major spoiler for those who haven't read to Volume 6.

Spoiler

Essentially the blue pole star was the first world created by the evil god, and he had friends I.E. The phoenix, gold crow and azure dragon. Hence all the heritages. The world actually traveled across the cosmos after being partially destroyed (pretty much equivalent to falling from higher realms I guess).

[collapse]

One of the advantages towards world building is the fact that some history has been slowly fed to the reader, allowing them to understand why the blue pole star is the way it is and why so many treasures (lucky chances) are everywhere. The location of secret realms are even indicated to have some form of aura (which I forgot) that attracts all manner of beasts, leaving them in pretty dangerous areas unless discovered. Another advantage is the fact that the main character has explored all three of the continents though I do find the story is lacking on painting an actual picture of what it is really like. Mainly the distribution of civilization and where the cities are etc. Or perhaps I didn't really pay attention to it.

Yun Che himself, well there was enough statements to indicate what kind of character traits he has. He is lecherous and somehow women accept it to some extent though sometimes there are obvious reasons why if people pay attention (it does create a strange atmosphere considering the woman are all conservative but some don't mind being groped before marriage). And while some find him too ruthless, setting an example Yun Che style is definitely presented effectively. Pretty much everyone is too fearful to even attempt to kill him unless they are sure they can actually succeed. If there is even a possibility of him actually having an old powerful master, they won't try attack lest he survives. I do enjoy the fact that the Yun Che doesn't think he is a good person, he doesn't think he is just, nor does he think he is truly evil. His morals are pretty clear, and while they may not be the best, they don't really change much.

The cultivation system could be fleshed out a bit more. Some stages don't really serve a purpose or I forgot the reason. A few though are clearly indicated. Sky profound realm is when people can use the profound floating technique and emperor profound realm is the moment when they can summon their domain. The divine profound realm is when they gain a better understanding of the laws of the world as well as their body, life and soul are supposedly are elevated (MTL is hard). Yun Che just breaks the rules around this but he isn't the only one anyway. This in fact is probably the reason why not much focus is placed on the cultivation. The evil god profound veins' nature is berserk and the great way of the buddha of the rage god gives strength, essentially making the main character have multiple times the profound energy and strength equal to those of a higher realm than himself.

Personally though I really enjoy him taking out his revenge in the novel. It's the best and sometimes it involves scheming. Other characters just go and kill but Yun Che:

Spoiler

His revenge on the divine phoenix sect is awesome, unfortunately the author blatantly tells the reader that Yun Che wanted them to refuse his offers so he can humiliate them even more. He made them think he was weaker and showed them a bit more power, and each time they thought they had a chance only to get completely crushed the very next day.

[collapse]

Sometimes I think the author doesn't realize others can read between the lines. But ignoring that fact, Yun Che comes off as a decisive character that some may enjoy while others find him going too far. Killing innocents may not be fine but the mob isn't really fleshed out enough. The villains, well they're villains, I don't really care too much about them, most act out of spite or arrogance but sometimes it's hard not to notice they are lacking somewhat.

Regardless I personally enjoy it because it is still one of the better and more interesting stories out there. <<less

One of the few CNs that make me want to read them again and, so far, the only one that I have actually read again.

Against the Gods, while not being necessarily original in some ways, has a uniqueness to it that manages to resonate with me completely. The novel shares many tropes with other CNs, however, no other novel can replicate its overall narrative as perfectly. The story-lines may not be the most creative that I've read, and it may not have the deepest, well-built up, characters, however, it is... more>> undeniably the most enjoyable novel that I've read. I love good writing and, in that prospect, the novel goes above and beyond. The story, writing, and the translation do an excellent job in making the novel feel completely immersive. Amongst the novels I've read, no other could make me feel the same interest, excitement, anticipation, and emotion. Whether it comes from the backstory of the character, the way he interacts with those around him, or even the whole world itself, there was rarely a dull moment in reading, with the emotion in the novel actually making me tear up at some points. Occasionally, however, this strength can hurt the novel. When random chapters in the story dip in quality, you quickly get drawn out and may want to skip reading a little bit until the high standard is regained. Fortunately, this happens extremely rarely, and when the standard is there, it is always above and beyond.

While the story contains everything that I look for in a novel, others may not necessarily enjoy the same things as much. The story features reincarnation from a past life and, as a result, the main character is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to medicine, cultivating, craftiness, and killing. What I like about the novel is that it doesn't make it seem like the character is completely overpowered but, at the same time, doesn't make him annoyingly dependent on other people/things. The character relies almost solely on himself, due to his past experiences, and he possesses the ruthlessness and attitude necessary to make it seem like those experiences were real, instead of just one time things that are forever forgotten. The story also contains romance and if you're anything like me, romance is a MUST. In my incredibly simple mind, the romance in the novel is great. All the girls (spoilers there's more than one girl) have their own deep plot and it isn't like many other novels where the romance is just a 'hey we've had 2 chapters of interaction and I'm hopelessly in love with you for no reason' type thing. That being said, even a hardcore romance lover such as myself was a little annoyed by the extent of the harem. In the beginning it's extremely well done but, eventually, after many hundred chapters, you'll see again and again mentions of 'peerless beauties' and you already know that the MC is ready to slide into those DMs. Okay, the harem isn't actually that big, and impressively, all the girls manage to stay decently relevant even 700+ chapters in the story. Other than momentary annoyances, I am completely satisfied with all of the romance.

Against the Gods is not a perfect novel, however, despite its flaws, it manages to rise above them all in my opinion. They never fully take away from the enjoyment and the overall experience. Things you see in the novel have an immediate, and far future, meaning that is real and affects the outcomes of individual character stories. The world, its characters, the writing, its pacing, and the stories all combine to make it one of the best novels I have ever read.

(Note: I am not someone who demands constant originality, or new ways to tell stories and as a result have no problem with repetition and, instead, enjoy because it means I get more of what I want rather than what might turn me off.) <<less

I really, really liked the novel at the beginning... but I disliked how women (and "love") were portrayed and the MC's increasing ruthlessness. I tried to ignore it but it grew a wee bit too annoying and tedious. I enjoyed the challenges the MC faced, the little details on how he cultivates or whatever items he aquired, which were creative and fun to read. So I guess it was a difference in taste.

God, I just love this one.

It's just a wonderful one. I... just.... No, this novel.. is undescribeable. Sad, funny, cool, I just can not describe it.

If you like Wuxia/Xianxia genre, definitely read this. I've read some other xianxia novel, yet this is one of the best I've read. I couldn't stop reading even though there's exam that time.

Read it if you have the time! If not, note it and read it when you have much time (like, days or weeks of free time).

Nice for both new readers and veterans of xianxia/wuxia novels, with the usual plot of protagonist starting out weak and advancing towards letting the world knows of his fame and power.

Different thing is, the protagonist somehow never did pass over his generations' level. Meaning, each of his confrontation is where is he is under-leveled but managed to be the black sheep and wins it all. Till the newest chapter, a total of 3 tournaments and all of it follows the same old tournament where he uses his power to... more>> prove "level gap" is useless against him. But, you gotta admit the way he writes the stuff for the tournament does not get you bored, even if the plot is overused. Personally, I'm liking it the tournament in the demon world right now ^^

As for other people's rant like why don't Yun Che gets homesick after 18 months of leaving Tianxuan Continent etc..., he did try to rush going back when he first stepped into demon world. Plus, he cant leap through space and no other alternatives, plus one big plot where he met his biological parents and their crisis. You think homesick got anything to do with these? Get lost, you furballs.

Although I do praise this novel, but it's got the downsides, yeah.
1. Overused plot-Overused but interesting still but only for now. But from how I see it, the story is still in the late-early phase if not the mid-phase so if the author got better ideas for the latter part, it's alright.
2. Harems Overload! - I mean, all men dream of harem. But, this story turns all of em' into his wife lol. From how I see it, Xiao Ling Xi, Chu Yue Chan and the little phoenix girl is 100% ending up as his "wife". Good thing is, the way relationships are initiated got some comedical romance and other plots. However, this story is still early and he got himeself around 5-6 wifes already?? Since the recent chapters are still about the tournament, no romance are enacted in the arc ""YET"", but I'm thinking it has gotta be the demon empress. This is really bad, Yun Che's age is 22/23 and the empress is not only married although a widow now but her age is...... over his damn biological pops. Speaking of yet another to be in his wife-harem thingy, once the one residing in his poison bead comes out, its gonna be another harem inclusion. This author got some bad taste, seriously. Sorry for my rant but this is about the only part of the novel that I am SERIOUSLY not happy with.
3. Slow-probably nothing much for readers reading english translation but for the chinese ones, it's not even one chapter per day... from where I am now, its still 567. Slow, too slow compared to other novel releases.

Haha, but still it's not a bad read. It's among my top reads for now (depends on how the latter part goes anyway) <<less

THIS NOVEL IS JUST TOO GOOD!

There’s some comedy, action, romance, and of course revenge. This is my favorite novel to read right now. Yup, I like it better than any other novel I read so far.

It is one of the best Wuxia/Xianxia web novel I have read up till now.

I've been reading ATG for 6 years now,

This novel is hands down one of the most impactful book in my life.

Please don't take the words of some of these 1 -2 star reviews seriously

... more>> If your a boy that wants to gain life experiences without leaving your house this book is it.

The Author really did a great job creating a whole story even when I thought there was no more that could be done, I was surprised.

Some parts are raw which might trigger some people, but honestly if they knew the truth of everything in thier history books they'd come to grips with biological nature and how some people are the same just look different.

I'm at Ch.1958 at the time of review

A novel that creates a conflicting feeling. For the first time in my entire experience of reading oriental literature, I wanted the characters to have a tragic end.

MC is a conceited, hypocritical, selfish, narcissistic, and lustful person. It is difficult to correctly judge the moral principles of MC, because the given genre itself has questionable morals. MC moral can be traced back to the following things:

Spoiler

1) Even if there are other ways of solving things, MC will choose s*x (rape). At the same time, he criticizes other people for this.

2) He can kill billions of people and everything will be right. If another person kills even one person, then it will be a "gigantic crime".

3) MC is the source of all the problems in this novel. Almost all the problems in the novel could be solved at the initial stage if MC listened to other people, but he has no desire to do it or his pride hinders it. When all this happens, then he simply forgets about past warnings (he can even blame someone for this).

[collapse]

Throughout the novel, he thinks that he is above all people. Good, if he was a villain or an anti-hero, but the author aims to make him a hero every time. For this, he can change black and white or exaggerate good or bad deeds. Unfortunately, the novel does not have a character who provide criticism him actions.

In certain qualities, he looks like an ordinary person, but even this is shown in a surreal way. As a result, dislike/ hate create in towards MC.

FMC is the only character that I liked in this novel and I feel sorry for her because of her tragic plot (Why sacrifice so much for MC (husband) for whom you are an empty place?). She also has certain problems, but she is more like a protagonist than MC of this novel. At the same time, for the first time during the reading of novels, I wanted to:

Spoiler

1) So that the character does not get a harem end (she herself appears against harems).

2) Every tragic MC/ FMC in most cases gets a happy ending, but in her case, the tragic ending (or something close to it) will be the perfect ending for her.

[collapse]

Harem is also one of the most controversial parts of this novel. This could be understood from the very beginning of the novel:

Spoiler

When MC was reincarnated at the beginning of the novel, the first thing he thought about was what a beautiful bride the previous owner of the body had and began to s*xual mol*st his blood relative. Of course, in the future, the author will soften this whole plot, but the essence of these actions does not change, because MC didn't know about it at that time.

[collapse]

This isn't the biggest problem for a harem novel. At the same time, it shows the wretchedness of the future plot. The harem is completely surreal, even if we don't pay attention to the ways of adding characters to the harem, the characters are completely incompatible with each other. In the best case, such a relationship would end in mental disorder in all the characters.

Enemies had several interesting characters. In theories, their plot/ backstory is quite interesting. In the same way, how can an idiot MC defeat enemies that are many times stronger/ smarter than him? Only through plot armor (and reducing the intelligence of enemies). This is what happens in this novel, each enemy becomes just cannon fodder for MC. With female enemies, everything is much worse. It doesn't matter what this character has done or what potential he has, her ending will degenerate into MC s*x toy anyway.

Plot is pretty weak. If you forget about a bunch of plot holes, the development of the novel is pointless. The first half of the novel MC just gathers women (although the first traces of the main plot appeared in 200-300 chapters and were simply forgotten). Then in 1300 chapters, amain plot puzzle appeared, which MC completely ignores and continues to collect women. In fact, the main plot fades into the background, and the plot moves simply in the direction of fan-service.

Spoiler

Although it is worth saying, thanks to the author, that the plot has an explanation for the super lucky/ strange actions of the characters. Everything that goes into the novel is the result of destiny/ manipulation of supercreatures. MC as such should never have existed (his destiny was to die at the beginning of the novel), but he was saved and given talent.

[collapse]

Conclusion: The main emphasis of the novel is on fan service (MC is tr*sh on which all the cool girls hang, and the enemies are even more tr*sh, because they are enemies), besides this, the novel does not contain anything at the moment. If censorship had not been introduced in China, the novel would have become a hentai. From this point of view, the novel does not deserve more than 1 point. I will give this novel 2 + 1 point in the hope that in the final we will be given a good plot (hope dies last... although this is in vain). The ending does not have to satisfy all readers/ be predictable, but at the same time it has to be fair. In the case of this author, he simply copy-past his past novels. If you really want to get to know this author, then you can read past novels to some extent they are better written. Although I would recommend that you skip this author. There are many more decent authors/ novels out there. <<less

One of the best novels ever written. Created an account just to write this review. Let me just tell you that i've spend the past 7-8 years reading all kinds of novels, Japanese, Chinese & Korean. I assure you this is on a whole other level compared to the rest. Easily my top 3.

  1. Deep plot - I cant say much but to all those naysayers who gave it bad reviews, its funny how they keep claiming this novel to be typical wuxia when they didn't even read up to the latest arc. I'm up to the latest raw chapters and let me tell you I've been refreshing the updates EVERYDAY even though the author went to hiatus for months, so the release is like once per month for now. The plot gets very interesting from 1300 chapter onwards and its unlike any other wuxia out there. No other novel had kept me this excited to know what's going to happen next, and I'm pretty sure I've tried out all major novels.
  2. Dynamic characters - Despite the amount of harem, every girl is different and they are still relevant to the story till now. Though I'm not sure what's going to happen next, but let me just say they greatly affects how the MC acts in ways more than you think. You'd like it if you are into mature interactions.
  3. Foreshadowing - this novel has a lot of foreshadowing and I think its done in some of best writings ever. I consider myself not easily pleased but I am with this novel.
  4. Mature. As above, I think this novel is written towards the mature audience, definitely not 14-15 year old kids hoping for a harem while the MC conveniently saves everyone.
Anyways, its only 1700 chapters, and its already better than the bulk out there.

This is my favorite cultivation novel of all time along with Martial World. It has a very solid developement and the quality never drops like almost all cultivation storys with 1k+ chapters. On the contrary, it only becomes better so definetely worth a read. But im not here to convince you as to how great this novel is.

The reason I am here leaving a review is because I see some comments rating this novel 1 star and complaining about how sh*t it is. Every single person who said that is... more>> completely biased and im gonna explain bellow why.

The reason they rate this novel 1 star is because "Yun Che (MC) is dependend on his woman for the actions he takes". While this is partially true and false I ask you whats wrong with it?

Every other cultivation story MC pretty much be like "I wanna defy the heavens!!" or "I am gonna become invincible!". Then they get some super treasure and super plot armor so they slowly become invincible. Thats pretty unrealistic if you ask me. When they are nothing but ants, they aim to become the strongest person in the universe. Sure;). If not for plot armor they'd die in first 100 chapters.

W/e. Back to this novel. MC has no ambition to rule the universe or some sh*t like that. He is merely overly protective and sentimental about his close people. Be that friends/family/harem/masters. No matter who gets hurt from his close ones, he will do whatever it takes to get revenge, and protect them. Even if the enemy is much stronger than himself, he will train like crazy in order to protect his family and friends. He almost died many times to protect people who were not in his harem, so basically people saying Yun Che is depended on his woman its mostly wrong.

So going into this novel, dont expect a MC with inflated ambition to rule the fckin universe, but merely expect a guy who wants to protect everyone close to him. And so different situations force him to cultivate in order to achieve that, while getting some harem along the way (Which is also one of the best harem novels i've read).

Now if

you dont like that kind of MC, just get the f*ck out and dont even start the novel, because in the end you are gonna give it a 1 star based on your f*cking biased review. :)
Spoiler

In case you arent reading this because of the negative reviews, I suggest you check the people who rate this 1 star.

  • Many of them just have 1 comment on ATG rating it 1 star while flaming it.
  • While the rest, either are people who dont like something specific in a novel (For example how much of a womanizer MC is) so they rate it 1 star,
  • Or they are people who rate novels like DRAGON MARKED WAR GOD 5 stars. You can imagine how bad a taste these unfortunate souls have. I pity them

I honestly love this novel. It was the first Chinese one I read that someone recommended me 4 years ago, and I'm glad it was because it got me hooked on xianxia. Yun Che is probably the ideal main protagonist that I'm looking for in a story. Not naive and cucked like in Japanese stories. He will not spare people or be a pacifist if he thinks he will be at a disadvantage later on. Intelligent and ruthless enough to get things done and kill his enemies, but not too... more>> overly ruthless, arrogant and chaotic evil like in other Chinese stories. There is some sort of balance that I tend to look for, and I feel like this one really hits all the right notes for me for some reason. There is a lot of other stories on this site, especially Chinese ones, where I feel like they tend to be a little bit too arrogant and ruthless, and it either bites them in the ass, or the reader just gets disgusted with their behavior because the MC just acts shameless or without any emotion.

His personality, however, does change a lot in the later half of the story, so just be aware of that.

Is the story generic? Yes. Does it get boring at times? Absolutely. But its enjoyable to read for me. I don't know how to explain it. I guess its like watching a summer blockbuster movie while turning your mind off and enjoying the dopamine rush.

I also won't comment on the harem stuff. Look, you either like it or you don't. I personally love it. In fact, sometimes I wish Japanese storytelling took some pointers from this story and made their MC a little bit more aggressive with women if they decide to write a Harem story.

Just like building an American football team. It starts at the Quarterback. If you don't have a QB, the whole team is going to fall apart. Same with story telling. Without having a good main character, even with all other parts of the novel being good such as the world building, pacing, side characters, and plot, it will still drag the story down for me if the main character just sucks. For ATG, even with some other parts being mediocre at times, since the main character is good, then I think all other things are forgivable in my eyes. <<less

Although this novel has its ups and downs, it was overall a very satisfying read. Characters have emotional depth, especially harem members. Anyone looking for decent romance coupled with action xianxia, this is it.

What this novel showcases the best is how to build up tension. From the very start, the MC get thrashed around or ridiculed for many chapters to the point that makes one really irritated. But the execution of the revenge time is what make this novel enjoying. Add on the great world building and decent plot, the pros outweigh the flaws.

There are several flaws to this novel. First, the MC is a reckless guy that goes full ret*rd mode when his harem is in danger which causes him to suffer... more>> consequences such as death but ofc plot armor kicks in. Another flaw is it there are arcs that are boring like the demon continent arc that are just mainly talk no jutsu but this is a chinese novel, just skim all those fillers. I've read other reviews that are criticizing that the MC is a rapist. I, personally dont like it but hey it is a fantasy world where killing is natural. If you dont like this then perhaps stories about Disney princesses would be right up your alley. Lastly, the author loves prolonging chapters. 10 chapter tribulation? Yep you can find it here. <<less

Extremely good novel, up until around 700+. At that time, the MC (Yun Che), completely forgoes all of his values, morals, and previous beliefs for p**sy. The rest of every chapter becomes pretty much the same.

If you enjoy novels where the MC solely lives off of, and seeking, fresh pu*sy then this is for you. If you want actually good/smart/reliable characters then don't bother.

This novel is not a good one, maybe it can be entertaining if you like a MC kicking young masters ass. I will put the pros and cons here:

Pros:

  • The characters are not forgotten, some were useful in their respective arcs and then they can't do anything for the MC but at least the MC interacts with and help them. In conclusion the MC doesn't forget about the side characters which is something that is strange in Xianxias.
  • The mysteries of the story are very interesting and keep you with the intrigue.
  • Some characters have a little of development and have good reasons to do the things they do.
    Spoiler

For example Qinyue or Cangyue. Also Jasmine is at least a character with personality and her relationship with the MC was well done

    [collapse]
  • The skills of the MC are fun and interesting but maybe a bit OP. So this makes the battles of the MC more enjoyable.
  • Sometimes when the MC used to use his brain, he tricked in very funny ways his enemies and that were my favorite parts of this novel.
Cons:

  • The villains are all unidimensional and sometimes very ret*rds.
  • The MC at the beginning of the story was a little inteligent but as the story advanced he is more and more s*upid. In the last 600 or so chapters he really has shown how s*upid he is.
    Spoiler

He couldn't figure it out that Qinyue was the daughter of Yue Wugou when he had all the clues, a f*ck*ng ret*rded could figure it out. Also it put me on my nerves when in the last chapters the Ice Phoenix explained to him everything about Hong'er and he couldn't figure it out she was the daughter of the Evil God with all the clues. He was like "OH REALLY? I NEVER WOULD HAVE IMAGINED!!!.-."

    [collapse]
  • The reactions of people about how awesome the MC is are really annoying. Basically s*upid filler.
  • A lot of battles between side characters are so boring and unnecesary to write about them, you can skip them and don't lose the track of anything. The author should use 2 pharagraphs to do those battles and finish them fast...
  • The MC has a lot of plot armor
  • The cultivation system is really bad but I found it funny how the MC sometimes level up
    Spoiler

I mean he fuc*s a virg*n and get a power up every time, I don't think is good way to get power ups all the time but I always laugh at this sh*tty thing hahaha

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

The MC was so s*upid when he decided to su*cide for Jasmine, he has so many people who cares about him but he go su*cide anyway.

    [collapse]
Overall this is a 4/10 novel, I need to say that I really enjoyed it sometimes but it really annoys me usually, as I said if you like the MC kicking young masters ass and being op you will like it. Otherwise you should read other novel, there are a lot of better ones than this.

I initially like this and read it as soon as newly translated is up then I decided to give up when he is becoming more of a lecher and have one woman one after the other. Seriously I could put up with the repetitive story in each arcs about his road to power ups and what nots. But I have had enough of his stud horse antics. Thanks for the ride up to here, but that's it for me with this novel.

It was promising at the start, it would even make you laugh, he later goes on a classical strong MC template but then YC couldn't control his lust, like he would die if he didn't smash, eventually it became stale and the chapters felt like filler, his character seems smart sometimes and an utter wreck at others, the fanservice is over the top and even the female main lead downgraded into a forced plot which made little sense, God of Slaughter seems more coherent, even PMG seems like a spring... more>> breeze after I read this, this is the type of story that makes Chu Feng look good in later chapters, it got so watered down that it became what it is, another novel that burned out too quickly. Gave a 2 since it had a fun plot for some tens of chapters <<less
