First cultivation/chinese novel I picked up, mostly because so many other novels don't address the romance in the series.

A lot of people complain about it but my opinion is that while it's not the best for romance, it's still there and presented in an ok fashion. He goes off and 'dies' a bit too often and it took awhile for people to smarten up to Yun Che's antics, but it's progressing nicely.

It's been one of my most fun reads since I started and it ticks nearly all my boxes, the... more>> MC isn't someone that shies away from the harem (MW) nor a no-balls inferiority complex frustration pile (AST pre-1000) and the loli is left to become an adult. <<less

I don't know why many people giving this novel a five star rating along with their ridiculous review that l can only say "this ret*rd only read the good part without arriving at the part where it become a sh*t or maybe they got paid or something"

Anyway this review was based on what l read so far:

Pro:

... more>> 1, it got harem and all of them was beautiful girl there was also the bip bip scene even thought not much.

2, MC was a collector, he got many treasure and legacy.

3, op MC, even thought his cultivation is weaker he can defeat those with cultivation far higher than him.

4, MC was ruthless and not like those jn or cn with naive MC, he also tortured his enemy.

Con:

1, all of the girl all idiot and too one dimensional with any of their own personality after getting on with the MC (there was this one man who said in his review that the way the MC and the girl meet was throught proper courtship, lol it was the most funniest sh*t l ever read when the MC even r*ped someone and make her pregnant and he said throught proper courtship wow so idiotic)

2, author plot armor was too thick with how he suddenly make the MC level up when after or in the middle of fighting when the author clearly said it was so dangerous to the point that the MC of other novel can die or only choice was to run.

Also the villain are idotic and don't have brain <<less

This is an ego driven story so that is one reason why so many love it. I will even prove it just by thought exercise and some evidence to back up this claim. Yc mol*st many female sect members of his first wife group. The fan boys screams go Smooth Che. Keep in mind, if Jasmine grab teh the junk of thousands of men to stimulate their meridians, the same people would call her a who*e and scream NTR. The only s*x that can be a who*e and a cheater... more>> is just the female ones. Even when a scene pops of something that may signal NTR, the fan boys grows angry while YC just mol*sted hundreds of women he does not even have a relationship with. No one calls him a cheater but cheer him on. All these heavenly beauty, that are as*xual and aromantic are conquered and join a number of women because he saves, r*pes, or helps them. There is usually little interaction, dialogue of even a serious nature or even getting to know one another before these beauties without working g**italia finds that it does work, but only for YC.

This universe feels like it is meant to showcase only the MC and not a world of its own. That is bad writing. Instead of calling this novel 'Against the Gods, ' it should be called the heaven provideth because without the heaven throwing all these goddamn treasures at our MC, he would be nothing special. The story progresses because the MC has the best steroids of the arrogant and mostly idiotic bunch out there. Hell, sometimes he will just run into a random treasure even when he is not even looking for it at the time but they show up conveniently. At certain points it feels like the author just slows down his cultivation but powers him up even more so he can skip even more realms to over play the underdog card in this novel.

As a web novel, this is just a story that deserves a 2.5 since I do have to admit that there is slightly more characterization in comparison to novels like TMW and MW. But, to assume that it reaches novels like Mistborn, A Song of Ice and Fire, Night Angel, where the people feel like real people with flaws and weak points to themselves, this novel is severely lacking in comparison. No tragedy will really ever occur, even YC's dumb decision will really never come to haunt him, and he will keep pressing on, massacring servants, babies, fetuses and his love interest will never view him as a monster in lieu of those choices. Why question the male lead ever or have an opposing view, in the end, they are mostly just good little Chinese Dolls that falls in line with all his decisions. I have read a better harem like 'The Selfless Hero Trilogy.' In that novel, some of the harem embers ahve their own beliefs and would leave the MC, and a shocker, even one harem member was r*ped previously before the MC. That cannot happen in a Mars novel and if it does, she will not be part of the harem because she does not pass some purity test. The MC in the novel I mention falls even for scarred women because he loves her beautiful soul unlike this novel.

So, in terms of those other stories if I had to hold it up to a real standard, this story is just a 1.5 and only because it is slightly better than the majority of crappy xianxia out there. These novels are like those junk romance novels here in the US that are a dime a dozen. Most are tr*sh but a few could be decent in a sea of similar works. <<less

The novel itself is quite enjoyable with some interesting plots (I really enjoy the plot when the MC goes back to his original parents’ hometown for the first time). Yet, some of the plots are also kinda repetitive as well. Furthermore, The MC is kinda way too OP with way too many cheat codes... similar to most Xianxia novels. However, certain aspects of the novel are quite... hmm for the lack of better words..... annoying and disturbing.

Spoiler

Like how all of the female chars are ok and even support our MC to expand his harem endlessly. (I usually support harem but 1-2 additional harems for EVERY arc is a tad bit too excessive)

like how the author keep using s**x as key problem-solver. (I mean c’mon how many times has it been now?)

2nd novel I read after the kings avatar... one of my favs.. it is a bit repetitive bt still doesnt disappoint... has a bit of everything.. action, romance, world building is okey too... hero might hv a bit of plot armor bt m pretty sure all of the stories hv tht so nothing to complain about...i like the MC... he is kind and ruthless... bt he is a bit too much of a perv.. :/

the females so far r okey.. just tht author seems to hv forgotten about a few... more>> of them by now.. hv been waiting for little fairys return for a while now -.-

i guess I hv nothing to complain about regarding this one.. just tht its getting a bit slow.. and it is kind of interesting to read so after catching up I hv to wait for a long time so tht I cn read a few continuous chaps again.... <<less

The novel is good, however, it gets repetitive after a while. Every single time, there is some secretly evil person who disregards the MC and basically plots against one of his girls or his girl-to-be. Then, BAM! The MC suddenly defeats him in a match, shocking everyone in the audience, who had previously only laughed at him.

Though it gets repetitive, it's actual story and writing is not bad and I quite like the harem. The MC actually has a harem instead of just being completely focused on his cultivation. They... more>> are also occasionally brought up again after being conquered, however, not as much as I would like.

Those errors are actually not as severe as it sounds as, even with the same plot being used, you will still wonder what the MC will do next or how he will defy the odd and, to be honest, the harem is also a lot better than many other xianxia or wuxia books.

The only thing that I truly have against this novel is that IT IS SEXIST.

For example, there has been more than one case when, after a girl has fought hard, maybe even sacrificing part of her life to win, had been defeated. After, he finishes off the battle for her and says, as if he did all the work, "it makes sense that she couldn't defeat him because she is only a girl after all". There has also been many many times when he implies that, because a person's gender is female, they need a male such as him to do every single little thing for them because "THEY ARE ONLY GIRLS AFTER ALL"

Really author!?!!??? <<less

I really love this novel. The first arcs are perfect to attract me to this novel. I love how cunning, sharp-tongued, badass, ruthless the MC is.

The strength levels are set so there's like goals for the MC and us, the readers, to follow. It's fun to see the MC leveling up.

Although some people complains how lucky the MC is or how easy for him to overcome problems, for me, I find it relaxing as I don't have to worry too much and deeply inside I have some secured feelings that... more>> everything will be fine.

As a girl, another thing I like is the romance (?) part, I like many of his girls (esp. Cai Yi, Xuan Yin, Jasmine, Little Fairy). However, it's a bit sad that every girls become boring after Yun Che conquered their hearts. (Oh boy, I don't want that to happen :' () <<less

The story is quite easily the biggest timepasser I have ever found, the worldbuilding is not completelly bad and the storyline is slightly above mediocre, with a relativelly realistical MC (although, not having the most likeable personality). Overallo 3 out of 5. Not the best nor the worst, readable and useful if you wish to spend some time in whatever.

Wow where do I start? I absolutely love ATG. As a fan of anime, manga and kdrama I started to become really critical about certain shows that had one detail that I didn’t like which would then cause me to stop watching. Getting into reading ATG I guess I didn’t really know what to expect and went in blind but I soon realised how much I fell in love

Yun Che has every aspect I look for in an MC. He’s smart, cunning, protective, funny and ruthless. He won’t hesitate to... more>> kill someone who hurts his family or loved ones. I love how even though at the start he was absolutely powerless he still felt strong. He’s also very independent even though he has a harem and so many people backing him up.

Jasmine, Little Fairy and (forgot her name but the girl from his previous life) all understand him or are independent. But the rest of the girls annoyed me. They are cute sometimes and the interactions between them can be cute as well but all in all I just really dislike them. Yun che is really in love with little fairy and she is his weak point. He also really loves Jasmin who was literally inside of him for 8 years. With the girl from his past life, she was also his weak point, leaving his heart with guilt and longing. But the others just seem so... 2D. At some points I had to stop reading because Little Aunts personality just annoyed me since it was so different and didn’t fit into the type of world or characters that was introduced before.

In whole it is so enjoyable to read and just gives you that feeling when you read it which you’ll never get from anything else. Try it out and see what I think :) <<less

If you're looking for a novel with a nice balance of action and romance, this the one for you.

This novel pretty much follows the same formula as most wuxia novels out there do. Same tropes, same clichés but the difference is, it's written tastefully. The MC is a ruthless killer in his previous life and has been reincarnated in a noble's body but with a crippled foundation. To summarize, it's a revenge plot zero-to-hero novel. He becomes really OP later on.

The main protagonist Yun Che is not exactly a lecher... more>> but of course like any other man, he likes women. This is a harem novel and so far ****little spoiler alert*** he has three wives, two fiancés, one unclear relationship and one girl missing pregnant with his first child pressumed to be dead (but most likely alive). Although he has a lot of women, he is not really depicted as someone who goes skirt chasing all the time. He has spent a considerable amount of time with the girls before they fell in love with each other. And in his world (like most wuxia novels) polygamy is normal for powerful people, so his wives doesn't have enmity with each other.

The author does like to reuse things in the story and can be quite repetitive like how Yun Che "dies" making his family grieve then he suddenly returns alive and kicking. I think the author, so far, has used this 2 or 3 times already.

In terms of maturity, this novel is somewhere in the middle. Not too mature, not too childish. Their has been several s*x scenes so far although most of them are only implied and not heavily depicted, for example like "he thrusted his mighty sword into the sweet red apple" or somewhere along those lines lol. One thing more the author reused a lot is using as s*x as "cure". So far reused 3 times and an oncoming 4th. To be honest, it's really more of fanservice even though the author tries to write it like it's something very significant in the story. Also, you dont need to worry about r*pe, ntr or any kinds of that shit. Even though the novel is still ongoing, the author's tastes is pretty clear.

The MC gains his power ups, most of the time, from pure coincidence. That's why you see a "lucky protagonist" tag up there lol. It does somewhat affect the quality of the novel but for me, as someone who have watched a lot of shounen anime, I'm already kinda used to this kinds of things.

Overall, although not very original, I'd still put this as one of my favorites. It's one of those novels that kept me entertained almost througout. Kinda like how I felt when reading Tales of demons and gods. <<less

MC is ruthless, badass and is a polygamist what else could you ask for from a novel made by marsgravity. It's' my first Chinese novel so I may be biased but I think it's a great... more>> first read and get still get your blood pumping if it's not. So be ready for cliches left right and centre because if you can't stand it you might as well just get up and leave. Also Yun Che is a very emotionally unstable character in my opinion but that just adds to the fun of reading the book for instance he destroyed a whole clan just for his little ain't, who was perfectly safe. From where I am at he has a total of 3 wives 1 person he had an intimate physical realashonship with another who he has promised to marry and 1 who spent 3 years in a coma thinking about him after she fell in love. Then there's a 'goddes' who gave him some evil god veins who's beautiful and considering we know the author we all know where that will end up... probably. Anyway it's a great novel that is fun enjoyable and has some great suspense every once n awhile, my advice is: as long as you can live through plot armour as thick as the fcking sun then this is a great xaunhaun novel for you. <<less

This one of those novels which likes to repeat the same plot points over and over again. Its cultivation, dungeon, martial tournament, dungeon where MC gets left behind and miraculously escapes and then some. Rinse and repeat. While the first 300 might be able to stand on its leg with this kind of writing a longer novel is surely going to fall flat.

This novel is very predictable that is a fact however isn't every book. I have read over 513 million words to date, but I have hardly got to the end of most of them because the ending is so clear. What I mean is that every book starts by telling you what the main characters going to achive; As the good guy always wins. But it is so important that the ending of a book is not transparent but clear. As there is a big difference between transparent and clear... more>> like transparent is you can see straight through no matter the distance and clear means that it is clear to an extent.

This book hides the ending very clearly; as you know how it is going to end. Have you herd of hiding in plain sight? Well I I am very bad at getting my point through but I was so bored waiting for the next chapter to come out so I yeah this review was started. One thing that this book does as best as you can is moving on. The plot at the start has start the MC to a sad life then he gets married then... BOOM. The story starts. The main character is not the strongest at any time. But is the strongest all the time. Remember that everything that happens needs to happen so the MC evolves. Because he has got 30 years to get what he needs. However needs and wants are two different things that some how come together to produce the the hook. But hooks don't always catch the fish so you need bait in different types for different audiences. What then is important is how big of in impact you want, so if I want a bigger fish I want to use bigger bait. That is the basic of the a story as it is not only meant for in individual but for a wide range. Wide range is still not everybody that is why it is wide. But the most important thing that is needed for a story to be the best it can be is to have another variable. So we got the type of bait and then we got the size of bait. What else is there. For some people they might of guessed it and it is the amount of bait. Think of a whale, what is it attracted to, yes that is a large amount of food. If you already got to this point that is because the hook of this review was good enough as well as the fact the bait was to your liking. Trust me for most people it is worth it if you read this novel because more layers on a cake means for a better party and the I icing on the cake is only ofpn the surface of the 100 layer cake what is in the centre of the cake. Eat to find out. <<less

The reason why I am at c415 is because the story get very complicated and my heart can't handle all that's going on. The one of the best novel I have ever read. It has everything you want in it. You want fight? No problem this novel has many fights, at almost every corner there is a fight. You want a good story? Again this is the novel for you, it has many plot twists and a very interesting story. You want some harem and romance? The novel has it,... more>> atm (c415) the harem grows a few wifes, a few lovers, wait.... not gonna spoil it for you. The training and strength progression is rather unique, the MC is at a lower level but can fight with others that are 10 times his level, which is amazing because after that everyone is super shocked. I think this is not something to fill your time with, this is definitely a main read. Knock yourselves out, this is really enjoyable. <<less

A lot of people don't like this novel and I'm not sure why. Sure, it's not the most original, sure it's your standard xianxia cultivation novel, sure, it's a harem, sure, the MC's something of a douche; all that said, it's still a good read. It's not original, but it's still a good quality story with a lot of interesting twists and turns.

It's got it's peaks and valleys like any other story, but some of the arcs are absolutely fantastic; so if anything, just hold out knowing that it'll get... more>> better as the story progresses, or if it hits a lull it'll eventually pick back up.

All in all, a good read. <<less

It's a popular novel, however it cannot be considered as 'great', even if people claim it can be. The novel sometimes feels like it could have been written by a computer due to how formulaic it can be. The order in which events take place, the situations of the heroines, how the enemies act. Each of these are as if the author chose a template from his stash. Albeit this formulaic feel, the author hasn't failed to keep interest most of the time. It could perhaps be his world-building, but... more>> he does manage to add one or two little interesting tidbits to keep attention. <<less

It's very entertaining, I would sum things up:

Strong Points:
-Strong MC
-Humor
-s*xual interests of the MC
-Entertaining
-Amount of chapters
-Solid plot

Weak (Almost excruciatingly annoying sometimes) Points:
-Person A is 2-3 cultivation realms lower than Person B. Person C has stated defeating someone of a higher cultivation realm is near impossible. Person A beats people like Person B constantly, if not every other couple of chapters.
-Heavy emphasis on MC and all other characters are only there to prop MC up.
-Extremely mighty plot armor
-Fight scenes are a... more>> little bland
-MC is a hypocrite sometimes
Spoiler

(needlessly kills people he doesn't have to kill, while stating he only harms those who insult or harm him, and he is kind to those who are kind to him. Not exactly true when he slaughters over 100 thousand people in a family, only like a hundred or so whom he knows just because 3 people in the family wronged him.

[collapse]

Even though it sounds heavy on the downsides, the entertaining aspect more than makes up for the deficiencies. Moreover I think the story is fairly imaginative, and I definitely think it's worth a read.

It's very 'xianxia' it fits the mold perfectly, but it does it better than a lot of others.

Recommendations: (Only top 5)

1. God's Trials
2. Coiling Dragon
3. Desolate Era
4. Martial World
5. Terror Infinity <<less

Well this was my second xianxia novel and at the time I had started reading it, I had never in any JP book read about an MC with such a character. I think most of the people who started reading with japanese novels and then read novels from other nationality authors can understand the refreshing feeling of reading about how the enemy was pounded into the earth. So I liked it a lot (still do) but most of the other xianxia stories became boring to read.

I don't think any veteran... more>> novel reader will need/agree to this review, so it's basically for new readers.

If you are bored with wimpy, s*upid, weak as hell MCs then try this novel. It's my guarantee you will like it. And if you don't, well then use series finder on NU to search for another one. <<less

I like the savagery of the MC. I’m tired of protagonists, who merely kill the bad guy, after the latter has had his way for decades. He’s a bit too fast to kill, but so is everyone else in his world.

I’m a bit split on his s*xual drive. An Echi anime’s MC would feel tame, compared to this guy’s lust. It’s not entirely helpful that some of the girls are 12-15 yo. While he is 16-19 yo (16 yo at the start, 19 yo at chapter 400). Not to mention... more>> he has the soul of an older person.

Spoiler

So far he spent both his wedding nights proposing marriage to a third woman. Both of his wedding nights. Arguably r*ped and imp**gnated a paralysed woman, who was the sister of his wife’s teacher, groped all of his wife’s seniors, has very, very questionable thoughts about his ex, who is currently 10 yo. And let’s not forget Jasmine is 12. Also lusting after every single good looking female. And wanting to marry his aunt. I'll just stop before I write a light novel on his s*xual exploits.

[collapse]
My biggest gripe is that everyone underestimates the MC. I get it, I do. But maybe you can at least be on guard, if you saw him win 45 battles IN A ROW? They literally think the MC wins several dozens of fights against geniuses in a row... by pure luck. Even if he actually just had that much luck, they’d still have no chance of winning, if you think about it. Where does their supreme confidence some from... It’s not like there aren’t items that hide Profound levels.

I don’t like that as soon as the MC’s strength started going out of control his growth stops. No doubt to keep him in the sweet-spot where he is just barely able to contest his enemies. And they can keep underestimating him.

Overall, I really like this light novel. There is a more complicated plot that surfaces every now and then. Quite often the story is driven by MC’s “as a man” (s*upid) decisions. otherwise he’d already be sovereign class and roflstomp everything in sight

Spoiler

Just on the top of my head he gives up a chance to raise 3 great levels (possibly from Spirit to Emperor) to save his wife. I’m not sure why a genius medical saint at Emperor level with 2 heavenly treasures would have any trouble saving a person with close to no injuries, but maybe it’s just me. Plot armor works both ways. Hero can’t die, but also can’t power up too much.

[collapse]
Overall, this is a pretty good read. <<less
