Everyone knows that Ye Tingtong is Shen Minghuai’s little shadow.

But he is nothing more than a pretty face.

Shen Minghuai is utterly annoyed by him, but no matter how much he rejects him, Ye Tingtong always wears a cheerful smile, clearly deeply in love with him.

During a party at the Shen family’s villa, Shen Minghuai is playing the paper-towel-biting game with a girl next to him.

Ye Tingtong, who is “deeply in love” with Shen Minghuai, sits beside them, his head lowered, dejectedly reaching for the snacks in front of him.

He doesn’t care if Shen Minghuai likes him or not; as long as he can use this relationship to avoid being married off as a pawn by the Ye family to an old man, that’s enough.

The atmosphere is reaching its climax when a cold voice suddenly comes from the top of the stairs.

“You’re being too noisy.”

Shen Minghuai is so startled that the paper ball in his mouth falls out. “Uncle?!”

Shen Minghuai’s uncle, and the current head of the Shen family—

Shen Jun.

Dressed in a suit, tall and straight, standing on the high ground, his implied aura makes everyone below dare not look him in the eye.

Ye Tingtong puts down the snacks: Who’s this? So formidable.

He instinctively starts to think, and before he can look up, he feels a scrutinizing gaze on him.

Ye Tingtong’s hair stands on end.

This person, he can’t afford to offend.

When he meets Shen Jun again at the Shen family, he is carrying honey water to find the hungover Shen Minghuai, and the two meet unexpectedly in the corridor.

Shen Jun: “There are people in his room.”

Ye Tingtong quickly understands and is about to leave when he sees Shen Jun looking at the honey water in his hand. He tentatively offers it, “Uncle, would you like to try some?”

Shen Jun takes the water and leaves a sentence: “Call me Shen Jun.”

Later, Shen Minghuai searches everywhere for Ye Tingtong but to no avail. He knocks on the study door, “Uncle, is Tingtong with you?”

Ye Tingtong is being pressed against the door panel, his hazy consciousness briefly clears, “Shen Jun…”

Before he can finish, his lips are gently kissed.

Then, he hears Shen Jun’s low, hoarse voice.

“He’s not here.”

This was cute but a little too fluffy towards the end. The author does a good job of assessing the story's progress and ends right before it has the chance to get too boring. There's a couple plot points at the end that keep the story going, but I enjoyed the beginning with the mc's desperate attempts at fighting against his arranged marriage more.

There's a boy that appears near the end that we are supposed to despise as the depraved and less deserving version of the MC. But I honestly... more>> didn't see much of a difference between the two - one just wasn't able to escape in time and the other did - it felt more like a matter of luck than any exceptional character difference. If you think about it, the MC was on the path to being like that boy, just with the Shen nephew. I honestly didn't care for the undeserved self-righteousness.

And another big plot hole that doesn't get explained is just why the ML decides to like the MC. If it's because of his appearance, that's so superficial. If it's because he's cute, that cuteness was mostly a defense mechanism the MC developed in order to curry favor with others. The affection is really puzzling and I feel like it really just boils down to the MC being in the right place, at the right time, which then makes the ml's considerate care pretty puzzling and out of character.

Overall, this is a fun story about two loners with no familial love getting together, and the powerful one helping the pitiful one grow into his own person. I do think the author is very right in pointing out that someone who makes all the decisions for their partner and caters to their needs only when it's convenient us not really in love with a person. They're raising a pet. Whether the other person is willing to be a pet is their own decision, but it's an unequal relationship where the owner probably won't ever see the other as an equal. <<less

A nice bite-sized length for the story. Not too long and not too short.

It had good pacing and was well-translated. Very positive overall without a lot of drama. I liked how sensible the MC was, even though his archetype (weak, canary), is not my favorite (I prefer more OP main characters).

There's also a definite age gap between him and the ML, which was okay in the story, but again, felt a little too parental imo if it were a real relationship in real life. For fiction, meh, I'll accept it... more>> lol.

Spoiler

There's a moment where the MC asks the ML for permission to go out and the ML is like, you don't have to ask for permission. The MC goes, what if I go counter to your wishes in the future? And the ML looks forward to it. It's like a conversation an adopted child would have with the adopted father.

The story was great, and I didn't regret reading it.

So, what about the story itself and the characters. The MC is an illegitimate child of a rich family who wanted to marry him off to an old man in order to strengthen ties with this man. The MC, who didn't want to get married, decided to find someone who would have more power and who would be about his age. He found someone like. This guy promised that he would help the MC and always protect him (what he didn't... more>> do when the MC needed it most). The MC ran after him, always flaunting his expensive gifts and the parties he invited MC to, so that MC's family would not force him to marry. The guy he was chasing was flattered. At one of the parties, MC meets ML, who is the uncle of the guy the MC was clinging to. At first, ML and the MC have few interactions, but after the forced marriage of ML's nephew, the MC realizes that he can no longer try to use him to avoid the wedding. The MC's family takes advantage of this, but the MC is saved by ML. Because ML's family is also pushing him in terms of marriage, ML offers the MC a fictitious marriage. The MC agrees.

After this marriage, the characters themselves and their relationships change. The MC, thanks to ML, feels safe: he understands that he no longer needs to humiliate himself in front of anyone and that ML will give him the security and freedom that he lacked. The MC begins to value himself more and begins to study (which he didn't do because he was busy trying to avoid an unwanted marriage). Due to the fact that ML is a patient and understanding partner who didn't limit the MC's freedom, the MC becomes more confident and no longer allows others to humiliate him.

The MC himself is a caring, devoted and gentle partner. It's thanks to his attempts to improve relations with ML that the walls that ML built collapse. And now we have before us not a cruel and cold businessman, but a caring, patient and loving partner who takes care of the MC, but at the same time the MC can do whatever he wants as long as it doesn't harm his health (yes, I love the fact that ML and the MC give each other freedom, and not one locks the other up like a canary).

The development of the relationship between ML and the MC is very smooth and doesn't look strained, and their characters, as I said, change in the process of this relationship: ML learns tenderness, and the main character, on the contrary, acquires some cruelty, but still has a kind heart, just no longer spends his kindness on those who aren't worthy of it.

Definitely a wonderful story. <<less

I love how straight forward the story is. The plot, the main characters, and the drama.

There's no unnecessary drama. Even the evil characters and annoying characters was there withing reason and destroyed in rather satisfying way without exaggerating things nor downplay it.

The annoying scummy character (that I'm sure anyone who had read this novel realize who I'm talking about) himself was written quite well. Almost turned evil, but because ML literally beat him and can destroy him, he didn't in the end. His thought process when he realized he can... more>> never get what he want because he's different from ML was truly satisfying conclusion.

ML and MC here was flawed character and we can see that clearly. But the development in relationships and the character growth of MC was truly splendid and clear I'm end up proud and happy for them.

Anyway this novel is truly wonderful and Heartwarming and I end up Loving it Sooooooo MUCH!!! <<less

It's a romance story focusing on the healing and growth of MC (and a bit of ML). It was a nice read. Definitely hate MC's biological family and ML's mom and Shen Minghuai is actually a bastard (we learn later on why he didn't properly help MC) because he can't take a no. Clearly the MC has an abusive and sad experiences but we don't really get the impact of it because it's spoken a bit offhandedly by the MC. He's definitely strong for being able to grow so uprightly... more>> after all that. But also, understandably, lonely and insecure. ML helps him be a confident cutie who pursues his own interests. But the relationship between MC and ML is great. Love that. I was worried the story was too short but it was actually perfect <<less
