After the Affectionate Second Male Lead Reincarnated

It was in the twentieth year of transmigrating into an abusive novel that I found out my husband, Pei Du, was reincarnated.

Every encounter we had since my arrival was meticulously planned by him, because in his previous life, I had repeatedly framed the female lead.

He even married me to prevent me from marrying the male lead, thus ensuring the happiness of the male and female leads.

This was all because my original character was an utterly wicked villainess, an obstacle on the path to the protagonists’ happiness.

But that wasn’t me. I had become close friends with the female lead, sharing everything with her, and I kept my distance from the male lead. Eventually, I married the most affectionate second male lead in the novel.

However, while everything else was true, that last part was just what I thought.

Pei Du was indeed affectionate, but I forgot that his character’s deep affection was not directed at me.

The day I discovered Pei Du’s hidden diary in the imperial study, I left the palace to find the female lead.

When Pei Du found out, he hurriedly came after me and drew his sword straight at my back.

The blade approached from the nape of my neck, cold and close to my pulse, with his icy voice behind my ear: “Stop, don’t go near her.”

It turned out that the always gentle Pei Du could also be so ruthless.

I like the execution of angsts and misunderstandings. After FL's realizations, she's still pursued her mission and been decisive on her actions... she didn't allow ML to emotionally hurt her again.

Spoiler

FL (Zhuang Qing) was transmigrated in body Jiang Luo Yu (OG Villainess) since kid, this was her supposed last mission which to saved OG FL and turned tragic novel to sweet romance. While doing the mission, she fell in love to ML (Emperor Pei Du) who was OG 2nd ML in OG novel plot. She then married him and decided to live longer in the novel world. For years, they've been like a sweet royal couple

But it turned out ML was rebirthed too. He knew FL's body is Villainess so married her to stop her "supposed" schemes.

The chapter 1 begun when the truth abt ML trying to kill FL bc he misunderstood her and thought will kill the OG FL. Fortunately, FL already read ML's notes and knew him being rebirthed and faking love.

When they already confessed their identities, knowing that FL is not OG villainess but also saved him and other FL's works to save other characters... meanwhile, he only did her bad like faking love, making her drink infertility medicine, etc.

I love how ML's regret was too late. FL didn't allow herself to open up to him and just focus on her mission. Even after death, ML's soul can only seen moving forward in her life in real world and marrying other guy

[collapse]

For ML's part, regret was too late. He destroyed his chance to have the love and happiness in his 2nd life. I'm glad how this ended.

This why I sometimes prefer short stories bc of being saved from further frustrations and prevent seeing for FL's early sufferings and unrequited love. Author didn't allow readers to ship them and cut off hope in chapter 1. <<less

Fantastic translation and top tier angst for how short this is.

Spoiler

I kinda wish OGFL was more resentful and petty and never told FL's real name to the scummy ML

All in all, I love that FL buckled down on her decision and made a clean break after completing her mission. That's queen sh*t right there

I'm so glad scumbag ML didn't get a redemption arc. I love that there's so little mercy for the the misunderstood/mistook past events tropes.

Doesn't matter if it's ML, FL, secondary romantic interests, or cannon fodder, if all their affection and sentiment hinges on that single, albeit pivotal, moment in their life and their "love" flips as soon as the name from their memories is replaced, they deserve little to no redemption in my books. They've usually dragged an innocent third party deep into their messy lives by the time they realize, just like with FL and scum ML here.

Ick.

"Groveling for your forgiveness" stories always hit the spot for me, provided the story didn't drag on for too long and the characters being wronged knew their worth to eventually leave for their own sake. Needless to say, this one is just perfect if you agree with the points I mentioned before.

One thing that I'm kinda conflicted about

Spoiler

After ML died, he became a ghost and was forced to watch the FL move on with her life in the worst way possible (for him I meant, not her). In the end as he cried his eyes out and prayed for her happiness, it kinda left a bad aftertaste in my mouth. Did he really deserve such punishment? He didn't know that she's not the villainess he knew after all. But then it dawned on me, he had been with her for 20 years or so. He had more than enough time to get to know her better, but he didn't. He was so blinded by the past that he failed to see the present. So yeah, it's well-deserved. He's paying for the 20 years she wasted on him.

[collapse]

Ending this on a lighter note, I really love FL and ogFL's friendship though. The story didn't reveal much as the focus is FL and ML's relationship, but you can see that they really cherish each other. <<less

I loved it. This was just the kind of groveling angst I was hankering to read. People might have mixed feelings about the ending but

Spoiler

damn, was it good! I'm so glad FL didn't end up with him and stuck to her guns the whole time. ML totally deserved what he got and the last part of the extra where the figurative salt was rubbed on his wounds was *chef's kiss*.

[collapse]

A solid 5 again from this translator. I'm really loving these short but very good stories that they've been translating.

"At 3 am, I'm driven to share my story, deeply resonating with Zhuang Qing's journey."

My own tragic first love in 2017 echoes some of her experience—falling for someone I initially disliked, just like Pei Du, who wove a web of lies that lasted 8 months in a toxic dynamic. Our tale was like a Wattpad story, with me as the 'good girl' to his 'bad boy, ' but it ended in shattering heartbreak, not a happy ending. The aftermath was even more devastating, as I suffered s*xual assault by one of his friends, a trauma still haunting me today, leading to a disassociation from life I'm still trying to overcome.

Years of seeking answers only added fuel to the fire, as I discovered that my misery was merely a convenient tool for manipulation, exploiting my childhood experiences growing up in an abusive household. Yet, this story brought unexpected healing. Zhuang Qing's second chance at happiness touched my heart, and Pei Du's regret brought tears. I mourned not for his attempts at redemption, but for the years Zhuang Qing, or presumed Jiang Luo Yu, spent trying to change his perceptions, to pour all her overflowing love on him, dream of something that had him in it, and give up her only comfort zone to be the rhythm to his song only to realize the happiness she knew and worked so hard for was just a cover up to save someone else's too good to be true fairy tale. I wonder if others like me and countless Zhuang Qings will ever receive a genuine apology and second chance from those who hurt us, like Pei Du's belated regret or a heartfelt acknowledgment from my own past. Thank you for sharing this story; it has helped me process my emotions, find closure, and maybe, just maybe, a path towards reassociation with the life I once knew."] <<less

I loved this story, it was a simple summary of what normally would have been explained in around 100 chapters maybe even more but still it dipicted the emotions of the characters neatly.

And I am so so so much happy that that kind of a tr*sh didn't get a second chance.

Knowing FL was happy really happy but not with him was satisfying 😌

Really really satisfying

Especially after reading many novels where I expect FL to break up only for her to end up with the scrumbag.

The ML deserves the ending.
Spoiler

If after a decade or more of marriage you can't tell that the person beside you isn't the same as the one from your memories, and you actively work to hurt them, you don't deserve them.

The emotional journey I felt while reading this short story warrants 5 stars. This is a bittersweet short story about a women who finds out her husband and companion faked his affection for her and has always seen her as an enemy.

I'm amazing at how much was depicted in only a couple of pages. The ending is so satisfying!!

Spoiler

I once thought that there was absolute trust between Pei Du and me, but as our secrets gradually exposed, I realized we had never fully trusted each other.

I didn't want to spend the rest of my days living under constant suspicion and self-justification, so our relationship could only end here.

I don't feel bad for the ML at all-
Spoiler

after spending years together, how do you not realize the soul of your wife is not the same as your previous life or maybe she has changed for the better? Even after finding out the truth, he still didn't ask for her real name... cruel is too simple of a word to describe him.

On the bright side, I loved the mc's relationship with the female lead and their genuine bond. <<less

7/10 personally I think this book has so much potential to be one of those heart-wrenching long historical book. As for such a short-length book I felt it was a little rush or incomplete that the FL just died like that.

What complex ending!

It was satisfying but I still kinda feel complicated about it!

Pei Du failed to realize the actual soul beneath Jiang Luo Yu's body and in turn, lost his true love. But I guess, if you can't even distinguish between a mere persona from previous life and your own wife who is wholeheartedly good to you, then it's on you. He led a tragic life afterwards but it was all his fault. So can't blame anyone else.

I loved Zhuang Qing, the FL, and Song Yan Yu, the OG FL's... more>> bond though. <<less

The story would have been more compelling if the original villainess had been kept in the storyline. This decision would have led to an unexpected and gripping twist, adding layers of complexity to the conclusion. Taking everything into account, I would rate it 3 out of 5.

I cried not because the MC and ML aren't together but on how cruel the ML was. For 20 years of their marriage, he ain't and can't tell the difference between the original and present? The hevk. This novel kinda unbound the other side of transmigration cliques.

4.5/5 Delicious angst about a ML’s belated realization of love and regret, and MC’s decision to let go. The extra I felt was a little much, ... more>>
Spoiler

since I think leaving it open and making him think she died would have been better. I say that not because I pity the ML, but because I think seeing her happily in love with another would give him closure and lessen his guilt. I want his angst to be like an open bleeding wound that never heals. I guess it’s a matter of personal preference.

AAAGHHHH I SHOULD'VE READ THE TAGSSS!!! THE TAGS, I SAYYY!!!! WHY DO I ALWAYS FORGET TO CHECK😭😭😭💔

I honestly don't know how to feel right now. Like, I was happy that Zhuang Qing found the one who truly loves her, but I also cried because even with the late redemption of the ML, he didn't meet a new person but instead had to watch FL live out her life with another person instead of him. I mean, he kinda deserves it, but it still made me cry. My mood swings are... more>> so shallow🥲 <<less
