Before her death, Qun Qing hated the powerful official Lu Hua Ting the most. She hated him for assisting the new emperor and for being cunning and insidious. She thought about him day and night, and tried her best to defeat him, but she was not his match. In the end, she became a cannon fodder in his hands.

After Qun Qing died, she saw the princess of the fallen country that she had protected with her life, crying and leaning on the new emperor’s chest: “Qing Qing is dead, what should I do?”

The new emperor kissed her: “You will be fine, just love me.”

The powerful official Lu Hua Ting, with deep scheming and brutal means, was invincible among the struggles of power. He was tired of seeing the ugliness of human hearts and lived a boring life.

Looking back on his life, the only thing that left a little impression on him was the mu*der of a spy female official by poisoning when he was 26 years old.

For the love of the princess, she sacrificed his life for the country and schemed against him several times. Lu Hua Ting was silent for a while, and curled his lips coldly: “She said she won’t fight, so the fight is over?”

I'm enjoying this story a lot. It definitely gives you the feel of a bunch of interconnected schemes coming to fruition.

Regarding what the other reviews said about the synopsis being misleading, I think it is semi-misleading yeah.

To be clear: when it says that MC, "leav[es] behind ten years of careful planning and treading on thin ice, " it means that MC stops single-mindedly working super hard and sacrificing her own interests to protect the princess she was serving and restore the country and instead starts paying more attention to people... more>> who actually treat her well while working to achieve her own personal goal of

So basically not a story about MC retiring, but also not a story where a supposedly smart MC fails super hard at getting out of a situation when that was supposedly their main goal. <<less

I don't think that's a spoiler, but just to be on safe side.

Qun Qing is an amazing character. And she's not super OP, and she realizes that in her position as a maid, there's a lot she cannot interfere in.

Her position as a maid + female spy makes so much sense, because no one in that era would expect a woman to be involved in assassinations, so she was a perfect spy all-out.

In the first timeline, she'd have succeeded if not for the Princess. In the second timeline, she's just a girl trying to get out.

She's definitely not a stereotypical female lead, and while there's that, her character is in-line with era sitting. She's very realistic, and I like that.

Like I said, In the second timeline, our FL just wanna get out of drama, and she doesn't hate the ML (since her hate was a result of her loyalty towards the princess now she has no loyalty, so no hate), she wants nothing to do with him, because she knows he is cunning. She admires him as a strategist (even in the 1st timeline), so she'd rather not stand at odds with him, except she already is at odds lol.

The male lead, we barely get a glimpse of him, but

This is definitely a title to keep an eye on. It's also a welcome change from the usual fare of webnovels. The plot is interesting, the prose is sharp, and the characters are fascinating.

The FL is smart and cunning, but not overly OP. She is a skilled spy and an intelligent schemer, but she's not OP. She makes mistakes (and admits it), she has blind spots, and she knows that events may change now that she isn't following the script in her second life. It's also a breath of fresh... more>> air to see this expanded perspective -- how she's noticing more of what's going on now that's she's no longer blinkered by her blind loyalty to the princess. It's hard for the reader not to cheer this capable person on now that she's recognized she was used and now is trying to free herself.

The ML has been on the down-low, only getting some more action in the latest chapters (as of ch. 16). We know that he's also regressed. Thus far, he's the beautiful but cold schemer type, the kind that pulls all the strings and won't hesitate to kill to get his way. Yet it's clear that the FL has left an impression, one of respect despite being enemies. They certainly don't like each other, and with FL trying to leave all this drama entirely, ML is back to chasing her down.

I imagine the romance will be a slow burn. But the intrigues and the drama seem like they'll keep us entertained for awhile.

As for the translation quality: It's pretty good, especially for a historical novel! It's easy and smooth to read. Characters and places are consistent throughout so far, and there's little confusion on who or what is being talked about. Kudos! <<less

I read farther ahead a little bit more than the translated chapters And I have to agree with the first review in the sense of the synopsis is very deceiving. I pretty much waited the whole novel expecting her to like break out and find her own life and protect her people and stop being f*cking caught up in all of his political bullsh*t by being someone's pawn to do the dirty work while also being persecuted for the work at any time.... Because that's the type I like you... more>> know and someone is living for themselves and that's kind of what the synopsis seems like but granted this novel isn't completed yet so maybe how long it took wasn't that long in the grand spectrum of things because I suspect this novel is probably going to go to about 300 chapters if not late 200s. But

The fact that it's not like that at all like she just basically gets caught instantly because of event s not due to herself well kind of but still... And she kind of just is also pretty attached to the idea of revenge still so she's not entirely free in that sense to truly protect the people around her and live her life. Obviously the book does set up the fact that just breaking out of the spy club isn't necessarily going to be easy so I understood that but her willingness to go back to the palace and work it's just kind of strange to me. I just feel like this synopsis was setting up something totally different and expectation and I literally like was so excited you know waiting for her to break out and be free and that's like what was interesting me the most and it just wasn't like that LOL she just left and came back I think in less than three chapters. I think she came back within like 3 days technically in the book world maybe 3 to 5 days or something well she was caught by the third day. Anyways and she kind of willingly let herself go from various reasons. But it's kind of contradicting because she initially was saying when she got back into her rebirth was that she wanted to just let it all go even if people are provoking her right and making it hard for her to live.... I just don't think that's still like the temperament that she came back to rebirth with And the temperaments of the synopsis wasn't my expectation. So that was kind of disappointing. But I mean to be honest the fact is she would have to get married to the male leads somehow so I understood that she had to return but I just didn't think it was going to be That fast.

I think there's a lot of details to this novel that don't quite match up in the sense that although you do feel like she's clever and that she has a sense of proportion and that she has a sense of danger which is all needed for a good book.... I don't know the writing still doesn't feel that clear to me or the translation isn't. But both kind of. But still I don't think it is as clever as the author thinks but at the same time there's so much happening that it kind of makes up for the fact lines aren't clear.... I don't know if that's explaining it well. The translation is pretty much I think AI generated edited MTL with some notes there are some parts that get cut off too which is interesting but hopefully gets better I don't know. I think it would be pretty helpful to have a chart for the people involved.

The first review is correct in the sense that this is enemies to lovers trope but honestly I don't know when they're going to be lovers... Even when you find that their attraction may be palpable... These guys are just not interested like that at the moment. I think they're more interested in killing each other and making sure that happens more than anything else. More like they can't let anyone else kill each other but the other person. It's kind of like low-key yandere. I think mostly especially on the ML side. Although I find the writing a little unclear for its events and meaning, the pacing is quite good and still leaves me interested although I waned off a bit. So I might pick this up again and hopefully just finish it when it gets completed <<less

Compared to other rebirth stories, this one is slightly different.

The FL is not an empress or princess, but is the spy of a fallen dynasty were she was a companion of the princess.

Similarly the ML is a bastard child of a noble family seeking revenge.

As usual there are a couple of holes in the storyline and a few inconsistencies, but it reads ok.

I am at chapter 102 but I m starting to get a little bored for now.

This is not a romance novel. It is a deeply plotted espionage/political/throne-fighting novel with a huge cast of characters in varying shades of grey. The reader, along with the characters comes to understand that revenge isn't straightforward, or satisfying.

I'd say the romance is maybe 2-3% of the story. (We don't even get a kiss until close to the end.) It's extremely well written but put me through an emotional ringer.

Honestly, the summary deceived me. I was feeling frustrated, and after reaching chapter 20, I became even more frustrated. The story makes you feel like you’re trapped in a cage you can never escape from.

Our heroine, despite deciding to leave everything behind, ultimately couldn’t escape the palace or the spy organization. I don’t want to continue because I can already predict how most of the upcoming chapters will unfold—I won’t see her breaking free and enjoying her life until many chapters later, after a long time, if it even happens... more>> at all.

Maybe she would have finally escaped and gotten away from all of this, but the someone definitely held her back, keeping his eyes on her, which made me feel suffocated. <<less
