After Marking the Protagonist A

Ji Chenxi — in the original ABO novel, he’s the arrogant royal cannon fodder Alpha who ends up dying miserably after fighting the protagonist gong over a man.

But after suddenly finding that book in his hands and reading it to the end, Ji Chenxi calmly finished the last sip of flower tea in his garden, then showed up just in time to drag the protagonist gong, who was losing control of his pheromones, away from the banquet.

Why fight over the protagonist’s lover? Forget that. He went straight for the protagonist gong himself — cutting the problem off at the root.

As for Chi Zhuo — he was a lunatic, cunning and cruel, the unquestioned king of the underworld. Everyone feared him, avoided him like poison. Yet one day, this venomous snake Alpha ended up ‘marked’ by a stunning, beautiful little Alpha.

The sharp burn of liquor mixed with the soft scent of roses, filling the room with heat and desire.

At first—

Ji Chenxi (frowning): “Reel in your pheromones.”

Chi Zhuo (gritting his teeth): “Believe it or not, I’ll snap your neck.”

Later—

Ji Chenxi (frowning): “Tell your snake to stop coiling around my spirit beast.”

Chi Zhuo, pinning him down and kissing him with dark eyes: “Too late.”

Their spirit beasts: a black mamba and a snow leopard. Venomous snake × big cat — a deadly match.

One-line summary: Long-haired, commanding beauty (top) × scheming, dangerous boss (bottom)

Theme: There’s no such thing as luck falling from the sky — only hidden effort no one sees.

– AA pairing

Mixed feelings about this because the setting isn't my usual taste. It's interstellar technology-level A.B.O. With royal succession schemes and plot. The 'romance novel' part of it doesn't have a huge presence (though it's there since Ji Chenxi uses it as a reference periodically to connect a few dots). The original protagonist shou has a very low presence, only appearing periodically with mutually acknowledged low chemistry.

The dynamics between the MC and ML are pretty combative due to their natures. In this setting, alpha scents repel each other, their personalities and... more>> instincts tell them to dominate. A later situation turns MC's scent into a dependency for ML, which is where I started to question the genuineness of the start of their relationship, though it's not really acknowledged much and somewhat addressed at the end.

The top/bottom aren't actually crystal clear because they both are tops going at each other, and ML is considered the bottom since he tends to be the one in the relationship that gives in. They do have s*x a few times, but the smut isn't portrayed much or very very glazed over. I do think they switch near the end. In terms of dynamics, I feel like they're written with both typical traits of tops/bottoms (though people tend to call MC shou-typical characteristics due to his appearance and floral-scented pheromones). I have mixed feelings about how they're written.

The summary and novel cover doesn't make it clear and the initial scene may be influenced by his upbringing, wariness and curiosity, but I came into the story thinking MC was the stoic-protagonist type and double-took when he was more crafty, shameless, sly in front of the ML (particularly when trying to get one up on ML in a fight since it's 2S rank vs 3S rank).

Spoiler

I also kind of think he's not a terribly good [boyfriend] to Chi Zhuo -- low response rate, says one thing for one reaction to finish with another meaning/action, and so on. Early on, I say it's ok. Chi Zhuo is dangerous, he could be pretending to be docile and ready to bite when you least suspect it. Later on, I still give MC's actions a bit of a side-eye, since it's still the ML making an effort in the relationship while it feels like MC only gives ML the time of day when ML reaches out first.

[collapse]

But anyway, MC's appearance says smiling gentleman, but his nature is pretty sly, teasing, and script flipping. He has the arrogance of a young alpha, and is in the game of royal succession. ML is the aloof tyrant type, but he bends a lot for MC.

I don't think it's a bad novel since I didn't drop it and read it to finish. AxA dynamics make it a bit more interesting! Maybe someone who likes futuristic settings will like it more. <<less

As if ch25 I recommend this novel! The story has been interesting and the translator is doing a really good job. I was really excited for spoilers so I tried machine translation and it definitely wasn’t up to par XD

There’s been a couple chapters now so their relationship is developing. What I liked about them both being alphas is that they are both cunning and go toe to toe with the give and take. In a recent chapter MC bites ML and says something like the one who is kinder... more>> loses but then ML returns the favor hahaha

Even from the beginning they thought each other were interesting.
Spoiler

There was a scene in the beginning where mc’s best, a leopard, licks the ML and everyone is shocked because it means he likes him. This was shocking because they were arguing but the cat shocked his true feelings, feelings he denied hahaha
