Everyone said the Demon Lord had a green face and fangs, ate raw human flesh, and enjoyed transforming into beautiful women to bewilder mortals, then gouging out their hearts when they were off guard.

People also said the Senior Sister of the Chongxiang Sword Sect, Fu Lingyi, was gentle and kind, treated others with courtesy, and greatly cared for her fellow disciple sisters. Merely passing by her felt like basking in the gentle warmth of a spring breeze.

The two were like fire and water, completely opposite, absolute sworn enemies. To the death.

Until that day, the Demon LordYue Jin annihilated the entire Xuanyu Sect, sparking widespread outrage. Righteous path sects united to suppress the Demonic Path.

The Demonic Path was completely wiped out, and the Demon Lord vanished without a trace. However, in the forest not far from the Demonic Path’s main stronghold, Fu Lingyi found Yue Jin, who hadn’t managed to hide.

Yue Jin, whose cultivation base was temporarily crippled after suffering qi deviation, bit the bullet and acted: “Who are you? Where am I?”

Fu Lingyi wore a gentle smile: “Is that so? You don’t remember me?”

“I’m your dao companion, my dear. Come back with me to complete our dao companion ceremony.”

Yue Jin was speechless.

‘My sworn enemy’s words are too shocking! How do I even respond?’

As the largest sect, the Chongxiang Sword Sect’s Sect Leader was in prolonged secluded cultivation. The entire sect was managed solely by Senior Sister Fu Lingyi.

The Demon Lord’s favorite pastime was provoking the Disciplinary Hall Sword Sect every few days. Relying on her slightly superior cultivation techniques, Yue Jin always pushed Fu Lingyi back, forcing her to lose face completely in front of all the disciples before decisively ending the fight and leaving. She relished this.

That day, the disciples of the Disciplinary Hall Sword Sect watched Senior Sister leave to join the encirclement and suppression of the Demon Lord. She returned the same day, unexpectedly bringing back someone with amnesia.

That person looked exactly like the Demon Lord, yet the Senior Sister announced she would form a dao companion bond with this woman.

First, she subjected the woman to various humiliations, making her lie on cold ice during a heavy snow night. Then, she pretended to forget about her, not even providing food.

Seeing this, everyone gradually understood. They realized she was treating the woman as a substitute for the Demon Lord, venting her past grievances.

But later, the relationship subtly changed.

The Senior Sister began smilingly feeding the woman and dressing her. She even went so far as to warm her bed.

The woman also changed from her initial bewildered fury to becoming increasingly embarrassed and blushing, no longer daring to face the Senior Sister.

Unexpectedly, one day, she simply vanished.

The Senior Sister’s eyes turned red; she searched everywhere like a madwoman, without finding a single trace.

Yet, a year later, she heard news of the Demon Lord reappearing.

6/10 (Above average, but not really special)

A mostly standard xianxia novel, more focused on relationships than power progression, and with a notable level of comedy. The progression of the relationship between the FLs worked, but some more effort could've been put into fully fleshing out the mindsets and details leading to some of the character decisions. Backstory directly related to the FLs was done alright, if nothing special, but some of the later character backstory dumps felt a little abrupt. Some moments were resolved or portrayed in ways that... more>> don't really match with the stakes, but generally these moments are treated with comedy, which helps to smooth over what would otherwise feel jarring.

Spoiler

The relationship progression was mostly believable when considering the characters involved, but it could've used a bit more backing in the story. It makes sense logically that since Fu Lingyi had what appeared to be a deep hatred towards Yue Jin, Yue Jin would be very biased against believing that Fu Lingyu truly loves her, especially with the testing that Fu Lingyi does at the start. However, it would've felt more solid if we had gotten a bit more of Fu Lingyi actually demonstrating unusually high amounts of hatred for Yue Jin. In comparison, the worry about Fu Lingyi finding out she had kept her memories from the start may be a more silly worry from the outside, it's backed up by how much Fu Lingyi gets unhappy with Yue Jin for hiding things from her in the story.

Having the backstory split up into parts was a decent pacing mechanism and worked to integrate it into the story somewhat. However, sometimes the backstory is just inserted when the characters have a free moment rather than truly being integrated and triggered by related events. An example of integration is when Fu Lingyi stroking Yue Jin's head transitions from the memory of Yue Jin having her head stroked when she was picked up in the past. This sort of thing helps to make the backstory feel like it naturally comes up in the plot rather than being forced into the story. On the other hand, a lot of the backstory blurbs near the end of the book feel very forced. Many of these scenes are effectively introduced with "I know what happened, let me tell you", followed by a short comprehesive overview of past events, which feels awkwardly inserted for the sole sake of advancing the plot.

There are also events in the book that feel like they were resolved oddly. Sometimes, these are moments where the author chooses to advance the plot via comedy in a way that might not be expected for a more plot-focused scene. These are fine and a reasonable path for a book to take. An very cut-down description of an example is when a subvillain is about to silence the group, and the junior sister comes in. Instead of trying to take control of the situation in any way, the hidden villain is continually interrupted by the others talking and ends up stalling the scene until proof is given that exposes the villain, and only then does the scene really advance. The comedy does enough to smooth over the suspension of disbelief, and alters the tone enough that the scene works.

On the other hand, some scenes don't have this excuse. In general, a lot of the later scenes to do with the fortune telling sect leader associated with the Heavenly Dao feel like awkward ways to just push the plot forward and don't have enough distraction to hide it. This is where a lot of the problematic backstory blurbs come in, and in general while the "Heavenly Dao is mysterious, can't say everything" excuse worked well enough early on as a comedic limitation for the fortune telling characters, it was starting to wear pretty thin by the end.

In general the side characters also suffer from these problems. The side-CP did not get nearly enough to really flesh out the characters and ended up feeling like they didn't justify their screentime, even with the dedicated extra chapters. The fortune teller felt way too much like just a plot device. The demonic sect in general felt a bit flatter than it seemed like the story was intending, considering the occasional reference to deceased members. Finally, the villains were either completely flat or all their personality came from singular backstory blurbs.

Haha the MC and FL have such a hate love relationship, like the misunderstandings are so silly but not annoying or dragged out.

MC is such a cutie lol, which is funny as she is the demon king and has the capability to be intimidating. The thing is she’s never a dominant person even when she tries to be and it’s funny

Spoiler

After gaining her powers back she comes and takes FL as a hostage and imprisons her which is typical of obsessed lovers however FL makes her do loads of cutesy things like cook food and give her a massage and constantly makes her flushed and stutter due to her shamelessness where MC is just a little shook

[collapse]

My only grievance is that

Spoiler

the memory loss was brought again by MC so late into their relationship like you didn’t need too plus I did wish the reveal of MC being FL long lost playmate was also done faster

[collapse]

Regardless it’s mainly cutesy though it gets dark at times especially as MC is a mortal for a bit and made to do bad things by FL (staying out in the cold with no food which is silly and dangerous) and trust me you’ll be cursing the fl’s sect out because what on earth? How can the MC, a demon king, have more mercy on its people than the supposed ‘righteous’ sect?

Still, the main couple’s misunderstandings of each other is what forms the most angst especially as it’s there actions that hurt each other. It’s all good near the end though, just a bit sad to see the FL lose trust in MC and vice versa.

So do I recommend? Idk it wasn’t as tension filled and harmonious as I would like, but then again relationships in rl are never either so, it’s an okay read

3.5/5 (rounded up to 4 since it’s not a 3 star story) <<less
