Advent of the Archmage

Description

Link was the top Archmage in the entire server. He had just defeated the strongest boss, the Lord of The Deep, Nozama with his party. However, instead of going back to town, he was transported to a secret location with pixelated CG.

It sort of felt like a vacuum, and within it came a glorious and commanding voice that calls himself the God of Light.

“Link, would you be willing to be the saviour who will pull the World of Firuman out from the churning abyss?”

What a huge mission! If it was in the real world, Link would have rejected it immediately. However, he was bent on being the hero in game.

“Bring it on!” Link answered confidently.

“Then, best of luck.”

And so begin Link’s journey of magic, friendship, betrayal, love and despair in the ever changing World of Firuman.

Finished the entire thing a month ago and I decided to leave my review for future readers.

The story begins with the MC being transported to a VRMMO game world in another person's body along with said person's memories and a game system bestowed by a God to facilitate MC power ups and plot progression. Pretty cliche start but what captured my interest was the amount of work author put in for the battles (albeit only the first few arc). It is a first for me to read a mage casting... more>> spells in the right places using their brain (as a mage is supposed to be intellectual) instead of spamming damage spells like usual.

That said, the rest of the story felt bland because the MC himself has no purpose he sets for himself other than following the mission God gave him to defeat a certain enemy. While every arc already has its general progression and conclusion placed in front of the readers since it's written in the typical game quest form with rewards. An example of what I mean would be something like "Find the ring to stop the marriage from happening (reward 10 points) " thus we know he will find the ring no matter what the twist and the marriage will definitely not happen, causing whatever is written to reach the end of the quest mostly a text wall.

Another problem would be inconsistencies in the story. There is a lot of them which includes plot, characters, skills, etc. An example would be the amount of needed skill points to learn magics in the beginning and middle part of the story. The rest I cant remember in detail since it's been a month or so.

A problem I have with the author is that he took my greatest joy in reading this because after the first few arcs, MC conveniently learns how to use a sword and in the later chapters, MC majors in being a swordsman while magic is mostly there to assist in his swordsmanship (so much for the title being Descent of the God of Magic). Oh, the ending is also very rushed.

Well, as the translator for this novel, I think it'd be more weird if I didn't promote my novel.

DGM (Descent of the God of Magic) is an action novel. Our MC, the best magician of a popular MMORPG, is transported onto Feloma continent, a world of fantasy with swords and magic. He is equipped with nothing but his former experience in the previous game as the best magician and a game system. And his mission is to save Feloma continent from the dark forces threatening to destroy it.

Every chapter is... more>> more than twice the usual fyi. (Hits 2.5 words sometimes until I condense my translations)

While DGM follows the generic template of an OP MC, the enemies are rational and don't act on their emotions, unlike typical Xianxia characters. Enemies are also quick-witted and not brain dead, even outsmarting the MC sometimes. The plot is very good and especially original. The first arc (~27 chapters) only describes one night.

The MC is also levelheaded and quick on his feet, and every character has their own unique quirks and you actually remember their names. They are also introduced at a good pace, not 5 different characters with different backstories squeezed into a huge wall of text. Most characters are also more than what they let on initially, some with tragic backstories that actually impact you. Not the typical 'entire family slain and he has to avenge his parents and 1, 000 siblings' sort of overused cliche. And they're actually integral in fights and plots, not some useless potato like in The Magus Era. World building is also a tiny part of this novel, it describes the various regions and alliances, and introduces the magic system and theory to the readers later on.

Now, our MC.

MC doesn't grow at an insane speed either. Instead, he is constantly handicapped by his low comprehension and level of spells, and has to think fast in situations. And he isn't all-powerful and whatever bullsh*t, he actually gets surprised at times. His growth in power is gradual and progressive, just right. The fight scenes are also brilliantly crafted, some are epic while others are sheer intense standoffs with both sides hatching ideas in split seconds to crush the other opponent. If there's anything about this novel, it's the fight scenes. The most of the best fight scenes I've seen come from this novel, hands down.

Well, personally, this is a solid 4/5 as far as I can see. The quality thus far beats any Xianxia novel I've seen before (including Coiling Dragon, ISSTH, Stellar Transformations and whatnot) except for WMW maybe. They're both uniques in their genres.

However, the novel is getting more and more cliche, and even repetitive. You know what's going to happen before it does, and it's simply not fun anymore. Wrote more about this in a comment on chapter 38 I think. But still, this is a really good read, still above average. Unless you detest the magic genre in general, then this is the perfect novel for you.

I heard the MC picks up a sword later on, but that's like 400 chapters in I think. Considering that every arc is like 100 chapters+ <<less

This novel is really intense. By that I mean it keeps you on your toes throughout the chapters. The plot is not predictable, even with the missions given by the system, situation always changes and anything can happen. The world is very dark and there are innumerable tragedies, dark plots and politics which keep happening around the MC all the time. MC is a pretty busy guy who keeps fighting just to survive. Enemy is like Hydra, you kill one head two more takes it place. He quickly starts getting... more>> OP but that does not make the fight any easier. Every fight is a struggle and very well described by the author.

Cons

Author absolutely sucks at romance. Anyone who looked at the harem tag expecting a big harem here would be disappointed. In fact there is no harem here. This world and the MC is totally not suited for this sort of tag.

Spoiler

He sleeps with 3 women in which he kills one of them and the rest two is just shown in ending part together in the most vague terms

[collapse]

Ending is rushed. Late part battles become typically xianxia styles with all the immortality crap and powers.

It is entertaining to read and in the end that is what I need from the novel. 1 star gone for the rushed ending. <<less

Honestly, the noel is unbearable with too many plot holes right from the start. I do usually read up to around 20 chapters until a review but honestly this one was terrible.

For example,

Spoiler

the MC goes around knocking people out so that they wake up after the assassins would have arrived. This means that they would be unconscious with no chance to fight back against said assassins. Later, while facing two supposedly highly trained assassins, the MC somehow fights back with level 0 magic and kills both the assassins. The MC then kills a few more people without any sort of reaction as if it's completely normal. Somehow also gains the ability to fight in real life just cause he was good in the game. The absurdity of it all goes on and on, and this is only in the first few chapters. I get that the MC is supposed to be special, but the dude was just a hardcore gamer in his past life, not some alpha special ops leader. A guy for some reason breaks his penis from falling down, I mean come on, seriously? Either the guy was having a raging hard on in the middle of a city-wide massacre or the author just doesn't use common sense.

Overall, a thoroughly disappointing novel, either meant for a brain dead audience or written by a brain dead author. <<less

This is not a bad story, but the fights which were interesting and original in the first arcs have just become ridiculous and can only get worse from this point on imo.

Spoiler

In the begining, casting a spell takes time and how the MC uses the spell determines his victory over stronger enemies, I liked that part.

Now, his thinking speed is that of a supercomputer: "There are still 0.05 seconds left before the tip of the sword touches Celine's body, Link thought. I still have time! "

From now on, every enemy without super-speed that breaks the sound barrier should die instantly without realizing that the MC started to fight, and the fights that are supposed to be meaningful should be walls of text detailing nanoseconds by nanoseconds reaction... which sucks imo.

[collapse]

Anyway, the author killed his story, so this is where I quit this novel. <<less

The author has not planned this out clearly at all. He changes settings at least twice for no reason because he didn't plan out how he would start his story correctly.

Also, everyone sucks the MC's d*ck. Hard. The MC is somehow amazing and super stoic and gives an aura of awesomeness even though everyone says he's plain looking af.

I can't even list the amount of cringy sh*t. For instance, the author goes on a one paragraph tangent fro the POV of a side character about how "cool" the MC is.... more>> All the MC did is say "hey can you stop shouting at the guard" to him when he was getting mad at the guard. Then this side character is like "WTF THE MC IS SO GODDAMN LEVEL HEADED HE IS SO COOL" and then I sh*t you not the author says "he would remember this moment for years."

Goddamn author. Jesus. <<less

Binged it in 2 days. I must say I'm glad I read this novel after night ranger. I was so disappointed with that novel, I dropped it months ago. The MC is cool headed which is a plus for me. He doesn't wantonly kill people if they doesn't give him face like other CN MC. For example he didnt kill his brother although he used to make him and his mother suffer for years.

The battle in the first 100 chapters are awesome. You can see how the MC kill managed... more>> his spell and limited mana and use tactics to kill stronger opponent than him. The system are ok but not too overpowered. It just give the MC points to increase max mana and buy some spells. But I'm a bit disappointed with the battle with that level 8 demon. It was build up really nicely with a lot of foreshadowing but the MC killed him in just one move.

Romance is a bit forced tbh. And kinda nonexistent in the end.

The system is not that complex. People just get stronger when they learn higher level spell. It's the way you use the spells that counts.

My favourite part about this novel is that the way it balanced the chapters from fast paced battle to relaxed crafting or learning spells chapters. I hated night ranger because the MC constantly moving to find better gear and fight villains. Even I feel tired when reading it.

Overall is an okay read. Give it a try. <<less

None of the nonsense you would expect from a normal Chinese novel (no offense, just a different in preferences based on culture). No constant stroking of MC ego and describing how perfect everyone looks and acts etc.

Plot is amazing, magic isn't mechanical though it seems so at first. 1# best cn novel I've read!

Plot: A pro gamer transmigrates into the body of a magician apprentice in the RPG game world. Realizing the time of the game is about to start, he is able to predict what will happen. There is also a skill system.

Characters: Main character is a planner and uses magic cleverly. By chapter 28, two potential harem members have been introduced. Those two do not have much personality but do have background stories.

World: RPG-like western fantasy, but written from a Chinese perspective.

Read this for lighthearted action where the enemies die without... more>> blood. Though the MC is leaning toward being overpowered, it isn't to the degree of one-hitting everyone; actual battle happens. <<less

This is like finding the perfect girl then discovering "her" to be a man.

First arc is amazing. MC uses magic in intelligent way. Techniques matter more than power levels. Story is fast paced, action is well done, plot is nice and there's little info dump even though it's the first chapters. I really got excited thinking to have found a gem amidst all the garbage in qdian but everything falls apart after.

The start of east academy arc is still good (mercenaries small arc), but later the MC stops using the... more>> game system, becomes a magician shut-in and the plot starts to drag becoming slow-paced.

There's no more intelligent spellcasting and everything boils down to spell levels vs character level. "No spells under lvl 5 will work on the demon because he's lvl 5" etc. Mana doesn't matter anymore as he always have enough (with rare exceptions because plot) and the micromanagement of casting time becomes ridiculous like other reviewers have said.

Because the MC is so freaking amazing like the author reminds us every chapter, he makes his own magic which usually is one lvl stronger than regular magic, defeating stronger beings with said magic while everyone is in awe of his amazing power (everyone else is just incompetent and adds little to the plot). In summary. It becomes regular xianxia trash in a new skin. Fortunately there are no noisy young masters, but everything else is similar including the writing with long exposure/infodump paragraphs that adds volume but nothing else to the story.

It's very sad. If the author kept the story going in the first arc's direction this would be an excellent novel but it just became common rubble. 3 starts only because of the first arc, otherwise it's just a one. <<less

Came for the cover. Stayed for the story.

Simple as that. I saw it on Qidian. Gave it the 10 chapter test. EASILY made it to the end with lots of binging and coffee and bathroom breaks.

Overall pacing is nice, the MC does NOT get too OP in the opening chapters, but does have cheat knowledge and training to get him through the hazards. The writer does a good enough job that I can almost believe in the plot armor.

My view on plot armor is that it's like the hot bikini... more>> fantasy armor: You KNOW it's there, you can SEE it, you wonder if it does any thing? Other than get your engine revved, but you KNOW it does something. It only requires you to get really really close to see past it and realize it actually has some value. BUT otherwise, it's seemingly skimpiness lets you believe that it's not really there.

Besides there is always plot armor. That's a story. duh.

Overall if you like a kind of OP MC person who gets sent to a world based upon his old game and so he knows stuff about it that helps him survive.... you should give this a try. <<less

3.5/5, tentative early review.

Not poorly done. Nothing done really well either.

The characters and relationships are pretty shallow and forced. He forms lifelong bonds and budding hopeful romances within minutes or hours. As this is clearly going to be a harem, the romances will certainly be shallow. None of the secondary characters stand out and their roles seem forced.

The storyline is very cliche and has been done many times already. Gamer takes over the body of a game character in a game turned real with an OP cheat ability. At chapter... more>> 33 the first arc is already over after saving the day and being a hero, and now the second arc and the next legendary quest has started. Like the relationships the plot feels forced and rushed.

While it has its lacking points, it's not a terrible filler read. It's a bit above average with little filler at this early point. <<less

I like the idea of the story. However the execution leaves me wanting. The plot armor is very strong with this one. If MC is in any sort of trouble he just 'buys' a spell on the spot and solves the issue. Need to defeat someone stronger then you? Yup got this spell right here that nobody has ever mentioned before that will solve all your problems!

I read the raws and this is a pretty good novel MC is a player in the a popular MMORPG that got transported to a world just like that game much like the Breakers.

The story start with him take over the body of a poor magic student in the middle of a massacre made by Dark elfs planing to kill the whole town and is up to our MC to try to stop this or just gain farm them.

The good part is the magic system and the battles Link is... more>> a master player so he can kill elites using only level 0 magic spells, can't say much about the side characters because so far only the girl the guy that own the body the MC took over loved but she look ok. But the whole point of the novel is the MC trying to reach the peak of magic and kill the bad guys on the side since the MC loved the game he doen't have a problem in being stuck in this game world. <<less

A pretty good story with a half-decent protagonist, at least better than most. Where this story really shines is in its world building and multidimensional characters. It certainly suffers from "plot creep" quite a bit, where new and more powerful enemies and problems get introduced just to keep the OP MC in check. If you're worried about the harem-y vibe that the story gives off, don't worry. Mr. MC is very loyal to his partner.

It's a good read that's probably worth your time.

Now to why I'm really writing this review.

Are you tired of paywalls?

Can't stand to lag behind nearly 200 chapters because people need to make money?

You should follow the rules, participate in all the activities that get you Spirit stones for free, and read a chapter or two a day.

But, through the magic of the internet, you can read it all for free.

edit:

Actually there are a fair number of places even on just the first page of google that are offering all of the chapters as they update. Even this one I listed is now like, the fourth google search result for "advent of the archmage"

I'll keep it hex encoded, 'cause I don't know if there are rules for posting links. If this site ever goes down, I'll find and put up a new one

One of the best webnovels. Guy gets transported to game world. Gets a cheat system and saves the world from demons. It’s similar to night ranger except night ranger focuses on knowledge of future events to gather strength and gear. Archmage focuses more on cheat system and skills and the future knowledge gets progressively unimportant quickly. Levels aren’t really important nor are there even stats. Just skills and how fast and powerful they are. The combat is also more well thought out and not just a straight up fight. The... more>> MC is mature and knows to advance or retreat when required and also makes peace in view of the greater good rather than simply smack them in the face. The only flaw is how a gamer could be so calm in such a dangerous and unfamiliar environment so quickly but that’s just me splitting hairs. No novel is perfectly in line with preference or our idea of logic and it’s still better than a useless wuss of a MC. <<less

A wonderful story. Consistent world building and characters. The ending is a bit rushed but apart from that it is a good read. Characters are sensible and multi-dimensional. The level system becomes a little fuzzy towards the end. But there are no conspicuous plot-holes.

Started off quite strong, but as of chapter 285 things are really starting to go downhill...

Author makes every human other than MC utterly retarded. Doesn't make sense how the humans are still alive and have a large territory when without Link they're useless. Also Link isn't too smart either tbh

Spoiler

Whenever Link captures important villains and gives them to the guards to send back to the city, they ALWAYS escape, it's so predictable and Link doesn't seem to learn, he should just kill them or escort the guards, but instead he decides to just let them get rescued so that he has more time to study.

[collapse]

Another big problem is that the author is so bad with power levels

Spoiler

Nana is a magic puppet who was semi-legendary, defeating people with divine arms and level-8 characters with total ease, and then Link upgrades Nana with some space time powers and epic equipment, and then somehow she can't even kill a random level-7 demon?? Even though she shat on Wavier who could take hits from Level-9 spells??

However the world is cool, MC pretty badass, and abilities are fairly interesting

It's been 300 chapters and only the recent 20 chapters or so have been painful to read, the rest is pretty cool, there's still time for the story to get back on track

Overall 4/5 <<less

Just finished Advent of the Archmage; I found it to be reasonably enjoyable. Though not the greatest book (see: Brandon Sanderson's Way of Kings), it's good enough that I don't mind a 5-star for sake of the "Should I read it or not?" factor. Please note, this rating is only relevant if you're looking for something that fits the tags the book comes with. Namely things like a game system, crossing over into another world, and a rather powerful main character.

Worth noting - Side characters are developed. Even if they... more>> start weakly introduced or oddly inserted into the story (ie. Love interests), they for the most part develop into individual characters with their own interests, motives, specialties, and so on. There are defining interactions with his best friends, of both genders. Many of them separate from Link, the main character, for the purpose of seeking their own path.

Won't say too much, but if you're looking for a decently lengthy read to keep you busy for a week or two, this is a fair one. Isn't perfect compared to great books like the Chronicles of Narnia, but then again, it's plenty good for a webnovel. <<less
