Reader beware: This is a BE story about a breakup and parental death. It is not a romance. The tags are all wrong.

I'll try to correct the tags as soon as I post this. If the tags are accurate when you're reading this, then it worked. If they aren't accurate, well, I tried.

The tags, though, are not why I've given this story such a low rating. That's for the plot holes and character inconsistencies. Despite its length (complete at 15 very short chapters), it's impossible to connect to any of... more>> these characters because they seem to change every other chapter. For instance:

Spoiler

Wei Yan [protagonist's ex-boyfriend] starts the story working ??? Some job ??? But when it's convenient for the plot, he's suddenly studying medicine. By the end, he's in some sort of business and has the leverage to get our protagonist her new job simply by putting in a good word for her?

[collapse]

But sure. Let's say he's a medical researcher or something. Stranger things have happened. But threads picked up early on are dropped and new ones are picked up seemingly at random. For example:

Spoiler

The titular tattoo that can't be removed? He starts getting it removed in Chapter 4, although that's the only mention of that plot point. Does he get it removed? Does he get back with his ex? Has he been cheating on our protagonist the whole time? Who knows! It's never mentioned again!

And in the final chapter, apparently our protagonist once wished for a normal life and has a thing for growing flowers? Which was not a thing in the early chapters (I double-checked before posting this because, surely, no self-respecting author would be so sloppy with something so short, would they? Yes, my friend. They would, they did, and it is.)

[collapse]

There's no consistency, closure, or resolution anywhere. It's beyond frustrating.

Props to the translator. They did a great job with what they had to work with, but there never was a good blade made of bad steel.

This is a story of a young woman who loves a man who cannot forget about his ex, who repeatedly chooses the ex over her—even when she is sick and even when her father is dying—and who constantly reinserts himself into her life even when she no longer wants or needs him there. They don't get together. There is no redemption. No satisfying conclusion. It's a short, miserable story whose protagonist loses her lover to his ex-girlfriend just in time for her father to die. Thankfully it's short enough that it doesn't waste much time—read if you're interested in a bad ending with zero payoff. Maybe it'll inspire you to write something better. It certainly didn't for me. <<less
