A Reversal of Unrequited Love

I believed that my husband was gradually opening his heart, even though our marriage was the result of my unrequited love.

“So, who is the father of the child in your womb?”

I was immediately stunned by this sudden question. As soon as I announced my pregnancy, his response struck me.

“Why, why would you ask that? It’s your child after all…”

“Hyacinth. I could not have embraced you.”

“…..”

“Let’s get divorced after you give birth. This is the maximum leniency I can show, not exposing your infidelity.”

I am honest with him. That night, we were clearly together.

I gazed at him bewildered, but his impassive face was as calm as an icy wall.

“…Why did you marry me?”

“Did I want to?”

I had no choice but to accept it.

The truth that all my previous struggles were pointless, and the reality that my efforts had no impact on him whatsoever.

I was the only one clinging to a relationship as fragile as a sandcastle.

At first, I expected the novel to be boring, but to my surprise, it turned out to be quite engaging. The interactions and dialogues between the two main characters were dynamic, and the male lead made the most of his second chance.

This novel holds a cherished place in my heart. I love both leads (which is rarely the case in novels like this). While neither of them is perfect, they both strive to navigate their challenging circumstances. The ML, in particular, initially resistant to the forced marriage, often appeared indifferent, in contrast to the other MLs who were mean and downright cruel to their spouses right from the beginning.

However, I do have to acknowledge that his actions following their intimacy (which he had no recollection of) were undeniably cruel. The hurtful words and subsequent actions were unnecessary and deeply damaging to her and their almost non existent relationship.

The novel's regret arc is done tastefully (!). The past is not conveniently brushed aside; the ML continually grappled with his actions and their enduring consequences. Their story of regret and reconciliation unfolded gradually, allowing for a realistic portrayal of their emotional journey as they both confront the weight of their past in their current lives. This was the case for the ML especially. His past also didn't excuse his actions (!).

Spoiler

The first side story, recounting the aide's POV of what happened to the ML following the FL's su*cide, was deeply haunting. The ML's raw emotions were truly palpable—the regret, the self-blame, you name it. I think it explained really well why the ML acted the way he did in their second lives.

If I have one gripe about this novel, it's that it ended way too soon for my liking. But that's only because I love it so much! Thank goodness for the side stories though! <<less

I love this novel solely for the ML's suffering. Halfway through, it switches from their first life to their second life after ML treats MC like tr*sh!

But the surprising thing is, is that it's in HIS perspective. He's miserable, unhappy, and absolutely HATES himself for everything he's done to MC.

It's not often we get the perspective of ML's in these kind of novels, especially when they regress, and I highly recommend it for anyone that's feeling particularly sadistic and wants to see a man grovel.

I loved this novel.

I like such melancholic tragic-style novels but the problem is to achieve that result, writers make characters dumb which takes away the joy of reading. I hate when tragedy strikes due to the utter incompetence of the MCs /MLs, when they don't put in any effort.

Compared to that here we have an MC proactive but within her character limit. She expresses her feelings and doesn't hold back, which is refreshing compared to the recluse-anti-social characters.

The only thing I hope is that the writer won't make ML's redemption... more>> easy. At this point, I can't see how he can make up for what he did.

That's another thing I hate in these novels, where they set up the ML to do such messy things but take an easy way out with the redemption. They are forgiven, well because they are the ML? I would be satisfied even if they live estranged forever as long as the Duke realises his wrongdoings. If that's not possible I hope he grovels at her feet for years because I can't see how her trauma will be healed easily with a sob story. <<less

It was heartbreaking and beautiful. Both leads are flawed in their own ways and they strive to overcome their flaws. I especially loved how the story ends.

One thing I appreciate about this one is that the ML didn't actually really do anything to harm the FL directly? Nothing that didn't make sense anyways. Like it's one of those things where everything piles on top of each other to create the absolute worst circumstances possible despite both leads having understandable thought processes & if even one of those circumstances had changed or just not happened at all the first life probably would have turned out okay in the end IE.
Spoiler

if the princess' nanny had still been there when it was discovered she was pregnant and could have admitted to drugging him into consummating the marriage, if the head maid hadn't overheard the FL talking to Jeremy, if he'd come back sooner, even if just after all that the baby hadn't been sick and lived more than a few days so FL would have had time to mend her health and come out of the volatile post-partum period cos girlie was not behaving like a wholly sane person towards the end there

so I ended up rooting hard for their do-over lol
