Solid Hunter/Gate and regression story with underdog getting stronk. Doesn't drag on too much with the MC's training in order to get as strong as he was in his past life - good balance between "details about powering up" and "something actually happening and moving the story along". MC doesn't get too OP too fast, and the growth and contributions of the other people around MC are shown (though MC is still the badass who comes to sweep and save the day, it's not like everyone else is useless). A... more>> lot of MC's success has come from how he's either underestimated or unknown and that he has trained, organized backup.

Unlike other stories where the MC is ostensibly part of the military but that setting is more of an excuse to make the MC a badass with hundreds of subordinates, the military setting in this story actually matters. Being in the military also means that the MC isn't a lone wolf and occupies a perspective not seen too much in player/dungeon stories. While he doesn't tell people about his secrets, he's always working together in a group of people; he isn't going around and taking on gates and secretly training or secretly investigating the bad guys because he can't leave where he's stationed at will; he's in a leadership position and is responsible for giving orders to people while also subject to higher-ups as opposed to being in a position where he can do whatever he wants. This is what The Dark Mage’s Return to Enlistment wishes it could be.

May not be the most unique premise (and the first couple of chapters are honestly not that great, their quality is a disservice to the rest of the story), but the execution is solid and the military elements give the story a unique flavor not found in too many other novels. One of the other reviews indicates that the story starts to suffer is it gets dragged on, but I haven't gotten that far so I can't judge. Even if it does, with a likeable MC, interesting secondary characters, and a plot that keeps me wanting to see what happens next, this is a solid player/dungeon story. If you like the genre and want an entertaining story this is an excellent pick. 4/5 at worst, 5/5 for me personally. <<less

The novel isn't bad and the premise is interesting but the author lacks the ability. Doesnt stand out from a typical KR dungeon novel. Super serious MC carrys entire world. Lacks the cool battles or funny jokes of the better novels in the genre.

Many topics/abilites/people are forgotten about. It felt like the author didn't plan out the story with how the scale grows. Around ch100 there is heavy event fatigue as there is only constant fighting, no downtime or character moments. I think that also explains the pacing change around... more>> 180 to finish the novel quickly.

This is the perfect sort of second chance novel to me. The MC is rapidly growing and kicking bu*t using all the experience and knowledge he gained before regressing. I love watching him use his relatively weak ability to the max to achieve incredible feats.
