“Strout, from tomorrow on, you have no job to do here.”

“Do you not get it? He’s saying you’re fired.”

At the Mages Academy, the extroardinary genius Magecraft Artifact Artisan Werner spent his days developing new Magecraft Tools.

The Magecraft Tools he designed were all revolutionary.

He increased the notoriety and fame of his Academy and had plenty of funding.

ーーbut.

One day, suddenly, envying his talents and blinded by the potential profits of the upcoming Magecraft Tools, the President of the Academy and his supporters expelled Werner from the Academy.

Without any other options, Werner ventured into the wilderness and decided to continue his research in peace there.

He had enough money saved up, and he is still receiving royalties from his previous inventions.

He had no doubt that he could live at his own pace this time without worry or concern.

On the other hand, without him, the Research Division of his Academy was unable to successfully develop any further tools from Werner’s previous research and was in a state of panic!

The President of the Academy and his supporters struggled to meet deadlines to even publish a poor quality Magecraft Artifact and were at a complete loss.

The exasperated Kingdom’s politicians began plotting to pull Werner into their organizations, and an underground religious organization began making their moves to go after Werner’s inventions……?!

With a Dragon and a new female disciple, aiming for peace and safety, a comfortable and behind the scenes daily lifestyle, Werner’s isolated research life begins!!

This is a pleasant surprise. You can guess what kind of novel this is from the title and this sort of thing is totally 'my cup of tea'.

What I particularly liked is that the MC isn't as clueless as they usually are, and there is also an actual PLOT!

This is gentle stuff, with challenges easily overcome and villainous mobs given comeuppance. 5 stars for being a great example of this kind of novel.

This is kind of fun but a little too slow-paced. The MC is one of those airheaded protagonists who doesn't realize that they are ridiculously OP and gets fired at the start because people are jealous. After that things go badly for the people who fire him and he does just fine. It is pretty standard but this story is actually a little disappointing with how they implement it. The MC seems to be heading towards some sort of hero story where he will be facing off with a demon... more>> lord or evil empire or something. There isn't any real interest in his firing, and I think the author just included that part of the story to get views. At least it was wrapped up quickly and completely.

After that, we are just left with "airhead OP guy gets the girls and lives an autistic life". He just kind of keeps doing what he has always been doing and really doesn't seem to understand other people or have friends. He has a sister who cares deeply about him and the royal family is also interested in making sure that he is comfortable to do whatever he feels like without actually asking him to do anything. He meets a girl and a dragon (both are on the cover image) and I assume one or both will be love interests at some point. As I mentioned before, there is some sort of evil magic stuff going on that will either be a demon lord, evil empire, or both, but the MC isn't really threatened because he is so OP.

The story is mindless and relaxing I guess? Give it a shot for fantasy and magic but don't get your hopes up for the part about him being unjustly fired. <<less

Ok... at first, I was annoyed by the nature of the MC (beta JMC-takes everything with his head down-doesn't want to make a fuss)

And then his master began writing letters and I understood why the MC is the way he is, so with a justification written I was still annoyed but accepted his character and it made it "bearable". ... more>>
Spoiler

His master always reminds him he is "stronger" than him to humble him and keep him in check since he's also very powerful, it's a brainwashing of sorts to keep his ego in control... I think he might be more powerful than his master and his master saw it and feared it, but he's not malicious in his intent, he's over 1000 years old so he might have seen what could happen and decided to "train him to be in control all the time"

[collapse]

And then I saw his reaction when he met the Crown Prince and the way he handled the situation, and I understood his reasoning more and that finally washed away my feelings towards his "self-belittling" character which in retrospect isn't "self-belittling" at all when you consider his actions when faced with an irrational opponent.

Spoiler

He's the 4th son of a powerful noble family that doesn't want to use his connections or influence to get what he wants, he tries to achieve EVERYTHING with his own power and not relying on the social position of the people that favor him, always following his moral standards, is completely tied by the rules of nobility and follows the "hierarchy" with a STRICT set of values, in the end, he COULD push through, but doesn't want to do it that way... a STRONG person that doesn't exert his strength because he knows he could destroy everything... this is shown when the prince asks him "what happened?" and he answered, "what happened is way too trivial to bother someone of your stature" so the prince called forth one of his retainers, a count, and our MC had no qualms to tell him what happened, and it was dealt with appropriately taking into account the chain of command and the measures according to the "kings-law", basically, "proportional response" or in a sense "because I can destroy everything I need to be careful to NOT destroy everything" something like "he is magnanimous because he doesn't want to exert his force on other people".

[collapse]

AND THEN trough a letter the master explained the setting, the main plot, the mayor goal of the MC... and I burst out laughing...

It all started to "click" for me, and I began thinking again about the previous chapters and found the "humor" in them, when at the start I wasn't really "getting" it.

So yeah, the "reasoning" kind of works, it's kind of forced trough actions but I can see it working within the rules set by the author, but the nature of the MC still is a "beta JMC" in the end... so I can understand why it's not for everyone even if it's well explained and reasoned trough, it's still the same character we've all come to loathe from other stories.

In the end, I find it "OK" so I'll keep on reading, it's fun that it haves a "goal" and a "direction" even if it took us like 30 chapters to get there so I'll stick with it, stars will change according to how much I'm enjoying the story, so far, it's OK, so 3 stars. <<less
