Definitely don't think the story deserves so many 1 star ratings. I wonder what's the rationale behind those votes. For one, the story is quite unique. I've ever read other modern supernatural BLs but this story holds its own.

The supernatural and slight horror aspects of the story appealed to me. It's probably too early to comment about the plot but c35 in, I can tell that I like the flow of the story, there's mystery and suspense. The bigger picture is slowly revealed as you read on. There's no lazy... more>> info dumps and excessive/ repetitive descriptive passages that indicates bad writing. I can feel the budding chemistry of the two leads. From the get go, what we see is the MC one-sidedly detests his husband (ML) and is making use their marriage of convenience for revenge while the ML is totally unbothered by what MC thinks and persistently shows his concern for MC in a Low key doting manner. I really like the ML of this story! ML is a mature and slightly OP character. He is aloof and v professional at work. Which makes him all the more funny when he goes OOC and focuses on certain details during the most inappropriate times that really reveals how much of a love struck fool he has become for the MC.

Nothing about their backstory has been revealed yet and thus I don't know why and how ML fallen in love with MC but author gave us so many hints along the way, and my anticipation builds up!

In response to dona's criticism about the 'lazy' lack of explanation on the accepted Male to Male marriages in the story–

To me, this point is inconsequential as the world is obviously paranormal and not aiming to be a realistic parallel to our world and thus, why should it follow our societal norms? Certain aspects when explained so very detailed like teaching a 3yo is simply a put off. Not everything needs to be spelled out to be understood! <<less

This story doesn't deserve a 1 star review, as of chapter 27. I understand why people might have rated it low in the beginning. The MC looks like he is a jerk, but he is really a hedgehog with a soft underbelly who became that way due to a poor upbringing. The ML looks like he teases and likes the MC for no reason just because that's how these stories go, but the author has set up the clues for a complex past between the pair. There are signs that... more>> characters will develop, the villains are abundant, disgusting, and mysterious, and there is a nice lack of inserted exposition. So, less over-explanation than usual for now. I recommend reading this lightly, without knee jerk reactions to typical developments as they may have reversals, and see if the author will veer off the path of the Gary Sue romance into a well-developed plot. <<less

This novel had really good potential with a unique blend of exorcism, horror, and cultivation elements. There was some really exciting build up with all the character introductions and the whole mystery behind this marriage.

THE MC: I actually found him likable. As the official first son of the prestigious He family, the MC is basically a spoiled rich kid with a haughty attitude. In spite of his bad attitude, his apparent compassion and devotion to his mother was very touching. As you learn about the origin of his nickname, you... more>> can't help but sympathize with his helpless situation.

Spoiler

The MC's nickname, good-for-nothing, was coined from his stunted cultivation which was considered an embarrassment as he was the heir to a prestigious exorcist family. This more or less brought about the schemes from the step mother and her children

[collapse]

THE MAIN CP: I had a first good impression on them. It was amusing to see the ML making smart remarks to taunt the MC and blow his fuse. I was eager to see how their relationship would develop with this undesirable marriage

Well, I was disappointed.

By chapter 30, you already learn everything there is to know about the characters and villains. By that point, it's just a matter of watching the gradual downfall of the villains. Everything is pretty predictable. The whole set up of the schemes is poorly planned out (on the author's part).

    • The stepmother and her children are all just inherently evil and antagonize the MC at every turn.... The very definition of 1D villains.
    • They seem to be blindly scheming with no definitive objective. The stepmother and her children do their scheming separately from each other and even seems to conflict with each other sometimes (lmao).
    • They're so disorganized to the point that they can't get anything done and everything becomes smooth sailing for the MC. (It's so contradictory that the whole grand scheme behind the marriage only resulted in the MC gaining the backing of the most powerful character in the novel, the ML)
    • In the spoiler box below, I've listed all their schemes. (and how s*upid they are)
Spoiler

1) He Jin, the MC's younger half-brother, repeatedly attempted to mu*der the MC. He even started to dip into demonic cultivation which is taboo in their family. He Jin could risk being shamed and disowned if he was exposed. Why would He Jin resort to extreme measures that could backfire on him when there is no clear benefit? Even the step mother opposes this scheme, but she's mostly unaware of her son's activities so far.

2) A Jade Pendant was discovered sitting alongside the ashes of the MC's mother in the cinerary casket it was kept in. It was explained that this pendant was made into an evil vessel that absorbs the residual 'Qi' of the deceased to nourish the owner, Qiao Peiyu, the stepmother. While I agree that it's pretty f**ked up to try to nourish yourself from the dead, why would the step mother feel the need to resort to this taboo method? As a low born woman who got into the family via unsavory methods (seducing the MC's father), her own status within the He family had nothing to do with her cultivation level nor will it help her gain any legal claims to the He family property.

3) A second purpose of the jade pendant is that it stunted the MC's cultivation. It was hinted that she intends to have the MC mu*dered. If the stepmother stunted the MC's cultivation to make him easier to kill, then isn't she causing her own shortcomings by marrying him off to the most powerful character. To make matters worse, the MC recovered his cultivation by breaking that pendant, effectively negating the jade pendant scheme.

4) The marriage was devised by the stepmother. She wanted to marry the MC off to another family so that the MC would have less claims to the He family property. Her objective seems to detract when He Yu, her only daughter, takes interest in the ML. She even comments that if she had known that He Yu would be interested in the ML, she would've tried to marry her off instead of the MC. The stepmother even starts devising a scheme to have He Yu seduce the ML. If that was the case, then what was the purpose of marrying the MC off to begin with?

5) The Welkin Upender is the He family heirloom that is given to the first son. By birthright alone, only the MC has the right to inherit it because he is the son of the first wife. Any scheming from He Qin is pointless because he was born from the second wife, the stepmother, even if he is the firstborn son of the He family. I don't see how colluding with He Jin to manipulate the MC into ruining his father's birthday party would get him closer to inheriting that heirloom. It makes even less sense for He Jin to be resorting to demonic cultivation since virtually has no chance since he's than the other two.

[collapse]

The relationship between the MC and ML became dull after the marriage with just monotonous interactions. Their act of intimacy seems so superficial and done on a mere whim. The MC seems even more emotionlessly detached and more unmotivated as the novel progress despite his progression in cultivation. <<less

The world building is really unique, there world is mix fantasy and reality, the characters are really good and no one is going ooc! Like most of the side characters haven't been introduced much but they just give the feeling that they have character, they are alive and they have a purpose to do in that world.

The idea of the MC being weak to strong is pretty common but how its revealed isn't at all cliched.

Overall this is a SUPER UNDERRATED NOVEL.

The translation to is superb but there are someterms... more>> which I don't get so i'll just search it up then i'll know.

But still... The translation is superb

Update (64)

I love how this novel has a story and the flow and direction where the story is going is very promising, like there a build-up of charcater development and the plot of events revolve around the problem that the characters are facing, the main antagonist is also mysterious and I felt really intimidated with him and I believe thats what makes this novel good is because the characters are believable and their feelings are very much real for me. <<less

I dislikes the MC, He Zheng. Can't stand this type of ppl. Max annoyance! I cant emphatise with him (unfortunate I guess) Oh well- the character is definitely not my cup of coffee

Since I can't stand the MC, the ML is automatically dumb (for me) ! Bwahahahaha

Well, the liking of the story does depend on the characters of ML and MC where, MC of this story nowhere likeable as a boyfriend material, but the love between the ML and MC is so pure and addictive, I am kinda jealous. You have to understand we have already benchmarked a likeable character for mc's and ml's in the novels and it is definitely not a good idea, not all the people are good and likeable where their past, relationships between family, living environment greatly influences.

This story... more>> is definitely thrilling, fend of the devil, and to those who are not going to read the story because you don't like the MC, please don't. Read the story. MC tries to change for the better after meeting ML and they both love each other to death at the last chapters of the main story. Their are side stories also. Some stories may seem you can't seem to continue farther then that's okay, but please don't drop the story for mc

And I really liked the story <<less

It's not bad. The novel focuses on the supernatural with MC being a so-called good for nothing who has to marry a powerful ML due to his step-mothers scheming. MC isn't very fond of ML, or anybody for that matter. He´s got a short temper.

So apparently male-male marriage is common here and I usually have low tolerance for this type of setting. Mostly because it indicates laziness from the author with the plot and it just makes everything too convenient for the characters. It´s fine if there is an explanation... more>> for it (like in "The wife is first") but if there isn't then it's just a fail.

update: I dropped it. <<less

I loved it! I love the MC naughtiness and lazy ass personality. I love how extremehe was with his likes and dislikes, he was black or white, never gray. His love was deep, not only for the ML but also for his friends and family, it was great to see how he was growing and getting matured, to the point where he was finally selfless. The ML was the typical cold and aloof and OP character, who waited thousands of years for his fated one. I cried a lot, I... more>> also laugh a lot, and it was definitely worth the reading. The side characters are also lovely, don't miss this great novel! <<less

I’m not sure why the rating is so low... but I decided to read this when it was available to read for free although I still ended up paying for chapters...

The ML is as usual, a golden thigh. He is the most capable, amazing person but decided to marry someone who was known as a ‘tr*sh’. The MC is arrogant, easy to anger and stubborn but he gets better the further you read. Their relationship doesn’t start off the best; and why it happens is a bit unbelievable but I... more>> prefer it to the usual yaoi where one partner is a ‘dog’ type (loyal, loving etc) whilst the other expresses their ‘love’ with physical and verbal abuse.
I highly recommend this novel though, and will read it to the end. <<less

Actually when I first read the blurb, I wasn’t too sure about it. But I’m glad that I read it. It’s actually getting more interesting the more chapters you get into. Especially when the MC and the ML get together

This book is awesome. The plot is progressing into a wonderful story with a mixture of the supernatural element that keeps you suspended. I love the relationship of the main couple, it’s realistic, and they aren't embarrassed to portray their love.

The raws I've found was only until this chapter. MAN, this novel is actually THAT GOOD, despite its short length. Very unique, now this is what face slapping should be. MC is very cunning, and doesnt rely on the gong. I wanna spoil but what's the fun in that???

Its really interesting and mysterious and I like that the romance didnt take too many chapters to be established. It just doesn t have a complete translation without the need to pay and for me the mtl tranlsation really doesnt work that well for this novel so I'm putting to rest to wait for either when I have the money or when a free translation comes up.
