A Fake Holy Mother in the Zombie Apocalypse

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

Bei Nuan found herself in an apocalypse novel that didn’t have a romantic pairing and became the holy mother female supporting character that specialized in being a drag to the team. In the end, she sacrificed the team to save a city of people and was cursed out by the readers.

Bei Nuan: I know the male protagonist and the plot. I’ll definitely be good at playing the female support character’s second chance.

There was a ding in her head. The task of the Holy Mother has begun. Play the role of a holy mother in front of the male protagonist. You can leave this world when you get to 100%.

Bei Nuan: “…”

[Although I do good things every day, I’m really not a good person.]

***

The male protagonist, Lu Xingchi, had a bug-level existence and easily crushed everything, but one small detail left his team being wiped out.

The first thing he did after he was reborn was to plan on throwing that holy mother white lotus into a pile of zombies.

But, as the days dragged on, he found it harder and harder to do so.

***

System: New task unlocked: Within the next 24 hours, acting like a holy mother in front of the male lead will not give you any Holy Mother points. Acting like a holy mother in front of Male B, Male C, and Male D will get you double Holy Mother points.

Bei Nuan: There was such a good thing?

Lu Xingchi discovered that that girl, who had solemnly vowed yesterday, “I’ll follow you every step of the way. Every second that I’m separated from you is a waste of my life,” had disappeared.

Love the couple. Scratch communication is key, they got bluetooth connection. Whatever MC can't say but want ML to know, he knows with just a look.

ML is every introvert's dream man. If you're looking for a ML that can love you and read you like a billboard you even when you're lying and keepings secrets, this is it.

Overall, a very light read. No drama but we get some action and humor to spice it up. Some anti-climatic moments but it doesn't ruin the story imo, since I'm here for the... more>> romance. Don't expect information dump about the "other world", author just gave enough to keep the romance going. <<less

It's a light-hearted novel where MC follows the system's tasks to the letter, but not the spirit of it. For example, the system will give the task of saying XYZ dialogue, and she will creatively execute that task in an utterly absurd way, so that no one takes it seriously and won't be mistaken as a holy mother action.

I enjoyed reading the author's mostly uplifting take on how people react to the apocalypse.

I'm used to reading book transmigrations where the main character is fixated on avoiding death flags and being... more>> overly cautious around the male lead. Its refreshing to see that FHM's main character is heedless about upsetting the male lead. Having died once to an accident, she wants to enjoy every minute as if its her last. She's not worried about upturning the original plot.

The humor/mood of the story reminds me a little bit of Zombieland (2009 movie). The main cast of characters aren't threatened by the zombies and treat the apocalyptic world like a walk in the park, and the author of this story describes the zombies as energetic marathon runners. <<less

The translated chapter 41 is the end of ch 14 in the original, this kind of chopping up of chapters is really misleading and feels very clickbaity...

Apart from that, it’s a really fun novel so far (though I’m only at ch 14/121...), I like the pacing and humour. Tried continuing to read mtl, but it wasn’t very readable, might come back in a few years to see if it’s been fully translated, will probably take a while to release 360 1/3-chapters.....

Really enjoyable and funny story! The MC, someone who due to circumstances has learned to only care about herself, is transmigrated into a zombie apocalypse novel as the annoyingly "saintly" character, and is is given absurd tasks by a system that she must complete. I laughed out loud multiple times while reading it. It's a lighthearted read, with a devoted ML and no major misunderstandings or annoying characters, and a happy ending.
Spoiler

The ML is OP not only in terms of zombie-killing ability, but also in terms of his reliability and understanding of the MC, which I appreciated as someone who detests misunderstanding tropes in novels. He often figures out ways to secretly help her complete tasks while also messing with her, all while she's unaware he even knows she has a system.

[collapse]
There are also a few instances where thought experiments are brought up and the question of what it actually means to be a good person, which can be a bit interesting. There are some issues with weak character building outside of the main characters and some weak plot moments, but I give five stars for overall enjoyability.

I actually liked this more than I thought I would!

Although they’re in the middle of a zombie apocalypse the story itself feels very relaxed because the ML and FL are basically OP. The ML is OP because he’s reborn with metal controlling abilities and the FL is OP because as long as she completes these mini tasks (which are unrelated to her greater mission of having to appear like a Saint-like person) then she’ll be rewarded with temporary powers. I’d argue that one of the most interesting parts of this... more>> novel is watching her trying to complete these mini tasks because they’re so weird and random. For example,
Spoiler

there are collection tasks like collecting “a girl’s tears”, “a boy’s sweat” or “a lover’s comfort” which lead to some funny moments. There was also a time where she had to get like five different people to imitate animal calls for her lol.

[collapse]

I liked the ML well enough. I thought that he fell for the FL kind of fast but it was really great that the author made him super sharp because it made for some great moments of dramatic irony. Because he was so sharp he could pretty much always figure out what kind of tasks the FL was given without her saying it and both secretly help her complete them while messing with her for fun.

I also liked the character of Du Ruo a lot too because he was a good dude and his gluttony and eccentric logic was hilarious. The other two members of the team needed more fleshing out in my opinion but it wasn’t like they were ever annoying or unlikeable.

My biggest critique is probably the ending because
Spoiler

I thought it was wrapped up too quickly. I thought we’d see her father in person at some point and I thought the jewels that she had been collecting should’ve had some sort of significance because I thought it was too much of a coincidence for her to be given precious gems after major plot points.

[collapse]
. However, overall I enjoyed the story. It’s probably not a 5/5 but I gave it a full score to boost the ratings because I definitely thought it deserved more than a 3. It was a fun take on the apocalyptic genre. <<less

I love this novel.

I agree that the settings and plot is pretty cliche and there's many similar stories but in my opinion, this novel pull it off quite well.

This novel is hilarious and there's many funny moments that actually made me laugh out loud :>

Spoiler

My favourite moment should be when the MC mistook a cat as the target of her mission and used various ways to try and figure out what the cat's wish is 😭

[collapse]

The side characters are all adorable too and my favourite is Du Ruo because he's effortlessly funny 😭

As for the romance,

Spoiler

it's fast paced and as someone who read novels with countless misunderstandings and chapters before the romance took a step forward, I was legit surprised when the ML confessed to the MC after like 30 chapters.

I was like, "Where's the drama ?, the misunderstandings ??". But I really liked how the romance progressed between the two <3

[collapse]

All in all, I enjoyed this novel very much and if you wants to have a few laughs and fluff while reading, I definitely recommend this. <<less

It's hilarious, not something you take seriously. I really enjoy the ridiculousness of it. Spatial powers are fun to read about, especially when gathering materials for survival. I'm at 33 chapters in, with the original novel, not translation.

Add: I don't follow the translator's chapter numbering as they split up a single chapter in pieces. I recommend reading this after a year or so long since some of the 'chapters' are released at certain days/times, or you can just MTL it if impatient.

I'd say you can buy chapters in advance, but... more>> it's too expensive for chapters that are cut up, especially since it seems like they're PER chapter (s) and not a subscription. (You can check, I was too lazy to do it. I honestly can be wrong most of the time since I don't check.) <<less

This novel was chaotic and fun lol~ Just like what the tags suggest the novel contains a lot of reborn and transmigrated characters with abilities (tho not all) and it was fun to read~

Spoiler

Though ML might be quite disgusted and easily judged FL at the beginning, after observing that FL seems quite different from the OG Bei Nuan and that FL seems like a cute little duck following after him (the mother duck), he fell for her really fast. As much as he was trying to not force FL to do anything, his feelings exploded when the scene described in the summary happened (where FL has to be a Holy Mother in front of other male characters), and somehow confessed his feelings. His love for the FL was extremely passionate but at the same time extremely careful since FL keeps on pushing him away (FL only does so because she thinks that she'll be leaving the world after the mission and their love is just hopeless). He's very smart so he understands FL's weird antics immediately and tries to help her out in some way.

FL was an adorable and funny character. She might seem cold as she doesn't really care if someone dies from a zombie so she thought she was similar to one of the villains in some way. After all, she initially viewed the people in the novel as just mere characters that she didn't have to care about. Later on, after meeting their teammates and the other people along the way to the safe zone, she developed empathy towards the people in that world. Though I believe that she started to trust and view the world as real when

Spoiler

FL inferred that ML knew she wasn't OG Bei Nuan and that he knows about her system and her missions and that ML was possibly reborn and had his system and missions too.

[collapse]

That was also the start of her opening up to ML and of them being officially together.

I really liked the plot twist that

Spoiler

FL's system (and possibly ML's? I dunno) was actually her adopted father that she treasured and thought had died. He made FL the true protagonist of that world and gave her a house and some other stuff as a birthday gift.

This is a very entertaining novel. Lots of laughter. But please do throw your common sense out the window after going into the story for your own benefit.

FL (I LOVE HER) is cute, funny and smart. As it says in the description, she is sent to another world to do tasks. I dont really like the "system" concept stories and tasks. BUT she handles them perfectly. They are not embarrassing and cringe worthy. They feel very cute. About ML (I LOVE HIM). He is perfect. Very smart, strong and witty.... more>> I love the way he teases her all the time. He will be reborn and he will have a system and a mission to complete too. AND lots and lots of fluff fluff fluffff....

The romance feels very natural and real. This doesn't happen much in Chinese novels. Every kiss is regarded as such a BIG thing. Its very normal for a couple to kiss many times. (at least for me...) They kiss and hug so many times and this feels like a real relationship. Also in many novels, the FL acts like a victim when it comes to physical intimacy. She doesn't like doing it and feels like a its a sin. It feels like the ML does it unilaterally. BUT here the FL was different. She really liked kissing and wanted the physical intimacy with the ML too. She tells him everything she wants or sometimes the ML being super smart at reading her realizes that the FL wants something and does it for her.

I loved all the supporting characters. All their stories are nice. Every relationship is nice. There are no supporting male or female leads (so you dont have to feel bad for anyone :-)). No jealous crazy girls or guys around. I liked how the ML gets jealous at small things. But he never asks the FL to change because of this. He tries to change himself.
Spoiler

Since she likes eating. She is always very enthusiastic towards a supporting character who is very skilled at cooking. The ML gets jealous of this and tries to learn to cook so that she can come over and fawn over him.

[collapse]

I felt FL system tasks a little annoying sometimes. And there are some things which dint make sense (EVEN with my common sense starting at me from outside my window). But it all comes together in the end. I loved the twist in the end.

Spoiler

The FL sees the house of her original world in this world and gets some keys and other stuff from banks which her father has saved for her in the original world. This dint make any sense to me when I read it, However, at the end its shown as the father of FL will also have become a system after his death. He will see the FL get hit by truck and spend all his points to get her to another world using a system and he leaves her a house and other financial assets for her in this world so that she can live a free and happy life.

[collapse]

Its a really good read. You are not going to regret it. Go for it.!!! <<less

This story is so much more fun and hilarious than the summary makes it out to be. I don't know what's up with CN novel summaries. They're always so misleading and tr*sh.

The MC is bright and hardworking. Even though the dialogue she has to say is cringe, she grits her teeth through them.

The other cast/her team are tolerant. Everyone is easygoing, or at least patient. Lol, they're all honestly great and smart and likable.

The most pleasant surprise is the ML, who has a degree in psychology. He was actually able... more>> to tell pretty early on that MC is not the same as the one who got his entire team killed in his previous life. His ability to see through people's hearts/lies is almost preternatural.

And MC and ML's relationship moves at a good clip. They're both adults and the relationship feels like one between adults. They act on their attraction for each other, but don't immediately formalize their relationship. If only because MC has plans to return to her own world after she completes the story.

Spoiler

There are multiple reborn people. It seems like all of them got a power when they did. And judging from ML, they all got a System too. ML's power is metal control, so he's super OP but clever about how to use it.

It feels like a strange... alien conspiracy since the zombie apocalypse supposedly started due to a meteor. MC seems to be the only transmigrated one though, with multiple tasks to fullfil her role...

In the og, the virg*n mary led to humanity's only hope being destroyed. So possibly, she was deliberately replaced by MC. Hm...

[collapse]

Anyway, the story is great. If you were putting it off like I was, because of the summary, give it a chance to chapter 4 at least.

Side note: fuyuneko's translation is great but they split chapters into multiple parts... So I guess what I'm saying is, it gets good as soon as chapter 2 in the raw. <<less

Although it updates in parts and chapters are off of the actual pace, I respect their great translations and frequent updates.

This is a good light hearted read for those who don't like angst. I usually don't read her novels and prefer sweet novels without much major conflict so my review may be biased.

Please keep in mind that this isn't an in-depth or serious novel and is actually quite fluffy. Romance is definitely there, CP respects each other; chapters are split into parts so Chapter 100 could really be chapter 40... more>> (not sure).

Anyways am just a Rom-Com fan who prefers fluff over drama. 👍 <<less

The FL is smart and interesting. Despite being forced into the role of a "Holy Mother", she's anything but. In fact, there were times when she thought she was someone without emotion. She is logical and caring of her teammates but definitely not Holy Mother. FL is also capable of getting herself out of most dangerous situations spectacularly. Not having a physical power nor prowess to do much damage, she uses her smarts and can be extremely calm in situations where she doesn't seem to have any leverage.

ML is... more>> a piece of work lol. He's intelligent, very intuitive, and OP. He doubted FL's identity since the beginning. He has incredible control over his powers and it's funny how he keeps threatening to drop FL off at a safe spot but is obviously heads over heels for her... No matter what form she's in... Ahem.

I love these types of apocalyptic romance stories. The fluff here doesn't overpower the plot but there are still enough doting and fluff moments that will move your heart. Also, the comedy is on point.

TL is marvelous but I finished with machine translation since TLs have slowed down. I will definitely revisit this story once Translations moves along again. <<less

Though the humor is stellar and the adventure is exciting, I don't see what's so different about the aspect of her being a holy mother with the past life and the plot is pretty much a dry staple of the ori!plot with some minor changes.

Spoiler

The ML wasn't allowed to change his adventure trajectory while the MC wasn't allowed to be ooc. In short, you're just reading the slightly revamped story about a not-so-original plot. It doesn't differ much from how the past life went on but now with some extras they missed out on the ori!plot

[collapse]

It's like a version of director's cut.

I actually liked the idea if the ori!MC reincarnated too, instead of being transmigrated from another world. I'd imagine she has some regrets since she's actually a real holy mother instead of someone who acted like one for a boring reason of avoiding truck-kun.

If it's the ori!MC equipped with the space ability and futute knowledge of the plot like the ML, I'd say that it'd be quite a touching story about a real Lady of Light correcting her mistakes. I found the current MC boring and ditzy. <<less

The start is not promising at all and I doubt the josei tag since this so far reads more like an apocalypse fanfic by a teenager. It's not a horrible story, but it's really hard to convince myself to keep reading when the initial impression has already killed my enthusiasm. A rather interesting but fast story about the end of the world and the woman who has transmigrated into a "cannon fodder" character. Unfortunately, things move a little too fast which detracts from the story.

The MC is Bei Nuan, a woman who transmigrated into a story about the ML, gained a system and a space ability. As per the system, she needs to perform various acts that are Saint-like to increase her Holy Mother (or virg*n depending on the translation) points. If she completes these tasks and fills her bar... more>> then she will get to return to her original world just before she died and get to continue living. Due to this, she often acts a lot nicer than a normal person. However, she is still a good person at heart and tries to help those around her who are nice in return.

The ML is Lu Xingchi, a man who was reborn and gained the ability to control metal. At first, he has no intention of being around the MC. Even plotting to toss her at the first available moment. Over time, however, he begins to fall in love with her and begins to go out of his way to protect her. He is a bit clever and tries to worm his way into her heart when he realizes his feelings for her.

Spoiler

Being reborn, he knows exactly what the previous MC was like so he realizes that she is not the same woman he knew. This helps speed up his affection, making him fall pretty fast after that.

He does take advantage of various events to manipulate the MC into developing her feelings for him (she was already interested but it helped it along) such as him flaunting his nudity when he realized she was hiding while invisible).

[collapse]

The story begins with the MC arriving in this world just as the Apocalypse starts. The hilarious moments begin immediately when the MC realizes that she has an invulnerability (basically a "noob" halo) until she meets up with the ML. Her first thought process is fairly straightforward in that she won't go meet him and just live out her time leisurely. This of course is the first of a long list of things that backfire for her plans but ends up working out for her in the long run. In fact, the story is almost completely comprised of the MC messing up accidentally but then winning.

Spoiler

From her first meeting with the ML's friend that leads her to the ML all the way to accidentally turning herself into a zombie temporarily leading to them discovering the mutant zombies.

Almost every time the system gives her a task and she completes it her way, it looks like it's going to screw up for her but then it works out even better.

[collapse]

The zombies are faster than the typical shuffling types and then there are the mutant zombies who are far more clever but most of the powers are among humans. And some are pretty terrible because they have that power. For the most part, the people that the MC helps turn out to be good people. Of course, it helps that she has the ML on her side as he is an utter powerhouse.

Spoiler

As the story progresses, we encounter a whole bunch of people who were reborn. Most of them gained powers but there is one person who simply exchanged his power for having a healthy body (he had been in a car accident prior to the story that rendered him paralyzed from the waist down and blind).

There are some people with nifty powers like the ability to make the viewer believe them to be a person they were the closest to (the ML kept seeing the MC while the MC saw her dad) or the villain who could become a shadow-like entity. Then there were people with the shittiest powers ever. One guy could silence people and another kid could see what was invisible.

[collapse]

Then the ending hits and I'm not sure what to make of the twist.

Spoiler

Turns out her father is a system who agreed to go to a crappy world in exchange for her being given a chance at a second life through the systems.

There is a second twist in the story with her being the actual main character of the story she read and not the ML like she thought. In fact, everything has been leading up to her making the singular choice from the story.

She gets brought to a room where she must choose where a weapon will target. Sacrifice her friends or destroy a village. Only this time, the stakes are worse as her friends (including the ML) can see/hear her decision before she makes it and the village also contains the guy working on the zombie cure.

Of course, being a good person and being in love with the ML, she decides to destroy the room instead. While this should have killed her, she ends up getting her happy ending as this was the right choice (and the only successful person to complete the Holy Mother experiment). She ends up back in her world just before she died with a healthy body and her space ability intact.

Only for her friends to show up and bring her back into the zombie world.

[collapse]

The main issue I have with the story is that everything flows quickly. They only ever spend a few chapters in one location (that really seems to be a theme with these Apocalypse stories) but there isn't really a logical reason for them to move on. We eventually do find out why the group needs to keep moving but there isn't even a fake reason given other than the ML wants to keep moving on.

Spoiler

Turns out he also has a system and must spend a certain amount of time at each location he went through on his previous life. Which is really just the system's way of ensuring the MC gets a chance to do what she needs to do at each point of the story.

[collapse]

Then there is the after-story stuff which can be skipped as they add nothing to the overall story.

Otherwise, I definitely recommend this as an apocalypse story but it's not very deep. <<less

so far its actually good? I had good laugh and both ML and FL seems smart and likable.

I saw someone complain about how the author describes the ML tho but I see no problems with it when I read it. Sure, its the typical handsome ML description but its the first chapter holy cow, so chill! Should the author skimp on describing their characters?? Especially since its the ML? That would be weird to me. There's other novels out there that wouldn't stop at first chapter when describing their MLs... more>> so this is pretty mild compared to that and not a big deal (have you read Malicious Empress?🙄) I don't even know why I included this in the review hahah. The story is fantastic~

Spoiler

At first, the FL seems a bit unreal... she seems distant in a bubbly kind of way.. her personality and worldview seem kind of strange in the apocalyptic world.

But then, we get to know her thoughts and story more, and it just makes sense... she's a treasure~

ML seems cold and unfeeling too at first, and his attraction towards FL seems a bit abrupt. Again, as the story progresses, we can see that he's too clever and smart for his own good..

He also persists in his effort to chase what he believes is his happiness... even when he got rejected every time, he never gives up.. and so the attraction between them makes perfect sense~

[collapse]

In this story, the romance is super awesome. I love it from the start till the end (even though there are dramas)...

The friendship between the characters was also fab! But what I like the most is the humorous tinge of the plot twists and setting.. even though the overall mood of the story is kind of bloody, I find myself barking a laugh often. I love the witty writing of the author..

All in all, a very very good story~ 🌈🫧

yeah there were some seriously cringe second hand embarrassment moments but knowing it was the genre I suffered through them, learned to laugh (a lot, maniacally), and learned to love these characters and this world. Had a serious moment where I hated all romance novels for giving me too high expectations of relationships - where can I find a tacit, mutual, endless kind of understanding? Where is the s/o who can read my expression and my mind with a glance? This kind of fairy love is setting readers like me... more>> up for failure, ok! - But in the end I do like an author who neatly ties up their plot holes and loops them into a tidy bow. Always feels rewarding to see something revisited chapters later. I knew what I was gonna get walking into this novel (a lighthearted read about a zombie apocalypse romcom) and am grateful to takeaway the pleasure and joy that I got from these hundred chapters. <<less
