★★★★☆ [4/5 stars]

The angst is real in this novel. I thought it was as lighthearted as Fake Slackers but I was proven wrong. My eyes are all swollen because of all the family and relationship drama, and even though the last few chapters were spent getting all the things in order again and giving us the fluff we need and the MC and ML deserved, my swollen eyes were not recovered. Imagine how much I've cried to maintain my swollen eyes until the end. My heart also ached a few... more>> times. I really wanted to listen to the audio drama, but unfortunately, there are no available translated audio dramas. This is my second school life/coming of age BL novel I've read but this is my first time reading an 'angsty' one and despite all the tears I've spent, I have no regrets!! Trigger warning for h*mophobia. But all in all, highly recommended!! <<less

really good if you like slowburn, it didn't feel weird considering they were supposed to be a family since I only realized the dad and woman were romantically together towards the end of the book. If that makes you feel icky keep on reading anyways you won't be disappointed lol. You might be really sad and angry but not because of that.

This is the first time I've read a web-novel by Mu Su Li.
Well written and detailed. Slides of Life.
We can call it a coming of age story and it's really too close to reality.
School time. Exam. Friendships and problems around them.
Great slide of life damnei to refresh the mind from the angst heavy danmei.
Although still need a handkerchief because the conflict is close to reality. ;')

This book made me feel like I'd lived a childhood that wasn't my own - I highly recommend listening to "第七年 The Seventh Year 某某" and "给某某 To A Certain Someone" songs after this (they're songs from the A.D of this book) and it'll make you feel so many emotions.

If you're like me and you look back on your days of youth with fondness, then all your nostalgia will come rushing forth with this book. Highly recommend - a book that's etched on my heart forever.

This is so well written, it makes me feel like I'm watching a school drama.

I love our leads interaction so much. The characterization is top notch. They both came from a single-parent family but still grew up pretty well. They're good at studying, have a sense of responsibility, pretty filial, and not being violent in every turn unless for self-defense. Rather than a character turning black because of some circumstances, I prefer this kind of plot. Even though they have lost so much, have been let down so many times,... more>> they can still love and care about other people around them with all their heart.

Our Young Master Sheng is a lovable little menace. And as being mentioned many times, he has a soft heart. It first shows in his interaction with his father. At the start, we all know he doesn't really like the idea of having a new mother. But he can still joke around with his father, paying attention not to say anything hurtful or outright rejecting his father new relationship. As the story progress, this becomes his distinct personality. He's the type that always think before he speaks. Even when he's unhappy, he never turn that negative emotion to others, doesn't want people he loves to get hurt.

Sheng Wang is just THAT protagonist in a story, you get that? A ball of sunshine and fluff, the one that never blackened no matter what happened.
Spoiler

That's why even after his father and Jiang Tian's mother forcefully broke them up, they still feel regretful and their heart aches to see him smile again because he is that lovable.

[collapse]

For Jiang Tian, I think the description said by his mom near the end of the chapter suits him so well.

"Every time, he would quietly stay within where she could reach him, like a steady but quiet shadow."

He's just really selfless and gentle. Since he's used to being abandoned, he never expect anything from other people. But there's no resentment either. He would feel hurt and unhappy but he never blame others from walking away. He acknowledge it himself, saying he only know how to give with all his might, don't know how to demand something.
Spoiler

When Sheng Wang realized he might love Jiang Tian and purposefully distancing himself, even then, Jiang Tian doesn't get angry. He goes quiet, questioning Sheng Wang, but when Sheng Wang is obviously distressed and hurt, his heart aches for Sheng Wang and he stops questioning.

[collapse]

There's another line I love, "After so many years, he still never managed to learn how to keep someone; he could still only use awkward, and stubbornly s*upid methods. It had never worked, but he still wanted to try nonetheless."

Just from the lines, you can grasp how Jiang Tian is as a person. He might comes off as cold and rude and socially awkward, but he actually the one who needs being pampered the most. Again, he doesn't know how to reach out. That's why it's a relief Wang-zai is a soft-hearted busybody who calls out to him on that night on White Horse Alley.

Spoiler

I saw review talking about their parents. For Jiang Tian's mom, I think her action is understandable, with the way her husband and her once-closest-friend treated her and what not. I can understand Sheng Wang's father action too but when I read the part where he forcefully brought Sheng Wang to his mother's grave, that's really crossing the line. That's just so low. He doesn't have the right to do that, especially since he's kind of half-abandoning Sheng Wang because of business.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Also, I really really didn't want to compare. Especially since this is (imho) written so much better. This novel actually reminds me of Addicted at first, the setting with being step-siblings, one of them loves sleeping in, etc. But we all know how Addicted turns out, all those dog blood and non-con and yeah. I'm glad for how this story evolves and ends.

[collapse]

I love the story and I love the leads. Maybe will finally start checking out Global University Entrance Examination because I have been putting that on my reading list for sooooo long. <<less

Read this, stopped, read again, stopped and finally finished it since it's completely translated (love the translation and even the translator notes that added to the experience, thank you translator!). Mainly because I do read other reviews and got myself super scared about the upcoming angst. It was such a build up (in myself) that I put off reading multiple times.

Oh the angst hit like a truck, for a few chapters, but it was NOT as bad as I thought and got better faster than I expected. And the... more>> resolution was MUCH better than I expected! It was within the boundaries of being realistic yet soft enough to get you to feel like it was a good enough ending.

What I really liked about the ending part regarding the conflict:
Spoiler

when sh*t hit the roof, they actually had friends that stayed supportively. People are open-minded here, even Sheng Wang's colleague in the 6 yeaars later timeline or Jiang Tian's shixiong. Also, despite the big negativity on the parents side that had many people agreeing that they were not very good, it was almost a knee-jerk reaction from typical old mindset parents. Though I'm going to say I disliked Jiang Ou more even though SMY did the actual separation of the 2. There was still glimpse of gradual acceptation from them in the end that I was (actually) not expecting!

[collapse]

Despite the ramping up of the angst in the last 20% of the book, majority of the book had a lot of light-hearted school content and I really liked the main CP dynamic and with their friends. The little things they do for each other really shine through right till the end and that HEA is well-earned. Overall a good read. <<less

I love the story, the tempo and the emotional roller coaster ride. Qingtranslate did a great job with the translation.

The only thing that made me disappointed was how the love affair between Ji Huanyu and Du Cheng was described as disgusting and everyone kept mocking them every time they tried to apologize. I don't expect Jiang Tian to show filial piety towards his father but at least can't they just sit down and talk nicely over tea or something?

I'm into a slow-paced romance, so this one is really my cup of tea. I love how 'the love' between them isn't shaped too fast and I think it's much more logical that way. The daily life conversations between the MC and ML build up their feelings towards each other, leading to a more meaningful relationship and I guess that's the main point why I love this kind of plot. And I like the ending too, even though the pre-climax chapters seem a bit too rush, at least in my... more>> opinion. So they affect the character development of the MC and ML. But overall, if you are into a slice of life, you can give this one a shot. <<less

In the starting, it was bland. For me, the pacing was too slow, the narration was too descriptive, and the characters were kind of monotone.

I generally tend to stay away from High School dramas but for some reason, I took this up on a whim, and I cannot express how glad I am for having done that.

It might be a little too plain at the start, but with that comes a sense of serenity that pushes you to reminisce about the time you were back in school. As an Asian... more>> who went through a similar school life (not as intense, fortunately) and got out of it not too long ago, I had an amazing time bingeing through this book. The characters, the scenes, the settings were so familiar that it made me feel nostalgic. As the story progressed, it delved into deeper, raw, and more meaningful topics apart from just school life.

The characters of this book might have been monotone (only in the start), but they grow on the readers so much, one can't bear to see them frown, much less in pain. What surprised me, even more, was the little angst and heartache present in the plot. At first glance, the story as a whole seems like a slice of life, but beyond the layers of words is a world filled with circumstances that bring a sense of exhaustion and desperation.

This is more than just a book with a 'Yaoi' tag. It is a book filled with life and love. A must read. <<less

4.5/5 for me

Spoiler

To me, the ending didn't feel rushed... I kinda understood what was going on. They were forced to separate so therefore when they met again, they didn't really have a reason to NOT get back together. They were both independent adults now. No parents that could meddle in their relationship.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Which brings me to my issue with this book. The parents. I HATE THEM! Jiang Tian's mom is a good-for-nothing. She actually fell ill just bcs she found out her husband cheated on her? Please. She's not the only one to have this happen to her! Then it angered me how she started having this prejudice over gay people just bcs of her ex. Yeah, he was a scum, but not everybody is like that! Her reason for not wanting Sheng Wang as Jiang Tian's boyfriend is ridiculous. She treated him like her son? Really? You haven't known each other for even a year. Also, apparently she wanted to compensate the fact that she wasn't there for Jiang Tian through Sheng Wang??? The hell? When she found out about Jiang Tian and Sheng Wang she fell ill again! And then it was still Jiang Tian that had to take care of her?! Why? Just why? I don't understand why he had to take on this burden. SHE WAS JUST A BURDEN TO HIM! She didn't rake care of him at all yet he had to take care of her... RIDICULOUS!

[collapse]

Spoiler

Sheng Wang's dad is a manipulative scum. He actually forced them to break up. And I also read a review saying that Jiang Tian agreed to it. He did not. He didn't want to let go. But he had to. Sheng Wang's dad didn't leave them a choice. Jiang Tian chose to transfer so that it would be easier for Sheng Wang. The dad forced him to go overseas! The hell!

[collapse]

Spoiler

Anyway, what annoyed me the most was that they still got to stay in touch with Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian, both of them actually still caring about them after what they did to them???? They both suffered so much because of them! It was so unfair! It would have been much better if both had cut off contact with their parents... it didn't feel satisfying this way... they didn't get what they deserved

[collapse]

Spoiler

Also, someone said that there was no character growth. Apparently that Sheng Wang changed throughout those years and he was back to his old self when he met Jiang Tian again. I disagree. Sheng Wang matured but how would you want him to be around the one he loves? He was being his actual self. He was happy. As for Jiang Tian... he was already pretty mature. And he also knew how to care for people. He was always on his own, give my boy a break would you?

[collapse]

In any case, other than the good-for-nothing parents, I actually enjoyed the novel! I mean it! It made me cry a lot. The relationship between Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian was so beautiful. I just felt bad for their suffering. They didn't deserve all that <<less

I've finished reading this novel a while ago and I couldn't get it out of my head it's so beautiful! Many ppl might skip this novel thinking this is weird cuz they're supposed to be brothers (they're not) so I'm here to tell you GO READ IT! Also the homophobic thing might be offputting which is also false!

cuz 1. Their parents in this don't deserve that type (if any) of empathy NONE I've never seen a shady father and a white Lotus mother in my life. They were forced to... more>> live together after being alone for 16 years so their parents could play home sweet home? Are you f*cking with me? I hoped this was a face slapping novel just so I could see them get retribution but alas the MCs are super sweet

2. The writing is beautiful it's translated beautifully and you can just feel things. The descriptions are so nice to read!

3. It's good to see students actually studying in high school that's what I like about Chinese novels that there's actual things included what students go thru

4. I wished there was more sweetness at the end! But the extras came through with that so I've no complaints. <<less

I had high expectations before reading this one. But I won’t say that I didn’t enjoy it.

The first half was basically about daily life, school, studies and all. And maybe that’s why it got boring *to me* So basically the first 53 chapters let me a little down but later half was really good. It gradually becomes interesting.

To be honest I actually find the ML’s mother unreasonable. If she didn’t show signs of character improvement near ending I’d prolly dislike her the most

I love reading Mu Su Li’s work. I love QQGK and Copper Coins. Maybe because I read these two masterpieces before this one so I had a bit high expectations. Although it didn’t catch up to my expectations but I’d say it’s still a good one.

This novel is one of the best thing I've ever read.

If you want a heartwarming romantic story set in high school that will make you go "why do I not have a relationship like theirs" and that will make you cry then this is the perfect story.

I know the plot may seem like it sucks, especially for the h*mophobia and that they're step-brothers but trust me, it doesn't, and trust in musuli.

it took me a while to write a review for mou mou. But i'll do it now.

I speed read the first and second book, because it was endearing seeing how sheng wang and jiang tian were attracted to each other, but they couldn't realize because of their own ideas and traumas.

I thought the angst would be worse, I'm not saying it wasn't painful but I definitely expected something that'd leave me crying for 2 hours straight and with a headache.

Spoiler

Anyways I was glad msl didn't drag the separation for many chapters bc it felt like hell

[collapse]

The part that felt the worst was the fact that everything that happened was due to the selfishness of the adults, they were victims of other people's problems and traumas.

In the end, I'm so glad they decided to not care anymore and just be happy with themselves, if their parents love them, they will accept them anyways. They stopped sacrificing themselves to please the adults and that's what matters <<less

A Certain Someone, this title really fits the book.

The first thing you'll notice about MouMou is that it's full of humour, slice of life, heartwarming chapters, a good amount of funny face slapping, and, of course, romance!

Mu Su Li did a brilliant job with this fantastic work. It's really, in capital letters REALLY, refreshing to read a bl novel that doesn't try to be cliche in its depiction of high school life. What makes this book so full of lemons is the fact that it's not cliche, thus making it... more>> stand out as specially well written in both terms of drama and romance.

The characters, on the other hand, are well developed. Shen Wang, being the top A's hardworking student who loves to face slap everyone with his peac*ck (novelupdates censored peac*ck lmao) character; Jiang Tian as the cold smart student; Gao Tianyang and Chili playing as the old married couple, and many more!

The only thing that misses out is probably how Shen Wang's childish highschool character immediately emerges back once he and Jiang Tian went back in the future. Besides that, however, this book made me burst out either laughing or crying like a barbarian in every chapter! That's just how good the book is. The slow yet exciting flow of romance and angst, it's like a spell that lures you to want to read and read and read more!

And to add, it's the perfect book for those who enjoys reading bl novel about high school life and prefers to read between 50 to 100 chapters. <<less

Mu Su Li is amazing; she is a talented author, and I admire her works. This novel isn't an exception either. The novel is beautifully written. Story is touching and emotional. What I liked is that the novel is realistic and the characters are well-rounded, and because of that, the story became moving. Nowadays, most novels describe how everyone is supporting same s*x relationships, friends and family members are so understanding, which is nice to read, but unfortunately, it is not true. But that's not the case in this novel.

The... more>> story begins when both MC and ML are still teenagers. MC's father and ML's mother are going to marry, so they begin to live together with their children. MC is a lively person who loves teasing other people and is also smart and hardworking. ML has a cold personality and doesn't interact with other people much. At first glance, those two have nothing in common and often quarrel, but as time goes on, their relationship becomes better and they begin to understand each other. As the plot develops, one can see that both MC and ML are lonely, and their parents really let them down. MC's father thinks that he is a good parent, but he made many mistakes and never considered MC's feelings. ML's parents are selfish and have never cared for him; his childhood was really hard. Yet neither of them showed their weaknesses until they met each other. They find solace in each other.

Usually I hate stories with separation, but here it was heartbreaking yet unavoidable and made the story more realistic, heartfelt, and wholesome. The entire story is perfect, and there is not even one sentence that is unnecessary or out of place. The story is sometimes really funny and sometimes really heartbreaking. It gives you the feeling of observing the lives of two living, breathing human beings; you can't help but cheer for them and worry for them. It's an enjoyable read that I would recommend without reservation. <<less

read moumou, it's so beautifully written (and translated). you won't regret it.

this is the work that makes me fall in love with musuli's writing and ended up binge reading all her series that has english translation.

I was unable to move on for days after I finish moumou. I didn't even pick up a new danmei right away because I can't move on from jiang tian and sheng wang. it's that beautiful. I cried a lot while reading this, especially near the end.

hell, I even cried during the part where jiang tian and sheng wang is celebrating jiang tian's 25th birthday– their separation and love for each other left that big of an impact on me. I still can't reread their happy high school days without feeling a tinge of sadness even though this novel has a happy ending....

[collapse]

the characters are very well written and relatable. you'll find yourself falling in love with sheng wang, and then along the way, as sheng wang fall in love with jiang tian, you'll fall for him too. her character depth has always been one of musuli's strong point (the side characters are also very realistic and alive).

I can write a whole essay about moumou but I don't even know where to start and when to stop. all I can say is just that it's so beautiful and bittersweet that it's been a week since I finish moumou and I still occasionally cry over jiangwang.

It's a pretty good story. It has a LOT of fluffy, but I was waiting for angst so I got slightly surprised.
