A.) Protagonist with the ability to think critically (about at least some matters), or is quirky. 

B.) ML that is not entirely one-dimensional. (No r*pe, and *usually* no dub-con...I say this because it is a common trope for ML in a consenting relationship to become 'temporarily insane' which leads into a dub-con scene).

C.) Plot that is not extremely contrived or shallow. Or if it is, in an entertaining manner! I might go as far to say a plot one will be interested in, besides only seeing the Main Couple interact.

D.) Writing, dialogue, and settings that are detailed, instead of short lines that can be summed up to- "Protagonist is dense, naive, and cute, ML is so loving and protective!! Aw!"

That is the gist.

-Not all novels listed have been fully translated, and so I am going off of the content of what I have read. Endings and relationship dynamics can also make or break a story in the middle.-I enjoy ancient setting more, so I haven't read as many modern.
