Arifureta Shokugyou de Sekai Saikyou (WN)

Starts fairly strong in world and character building, but suddenly falls off a cliff as the story opens up. It's so abrupt you'd think that it was an entirely different person writing.

I stuck with it for quite awhile afterwards, hoping the writing would improve, but it became worse and worse.

I Have a Mansion in the Post-apocalyptic World

Not sure if I can bare reading any more of this. Reviews say that it gets better, but right now it reads like bad Fallout fan fiction. Everything from the setting, technology, and even plot lines are ripped from Fallout with cringe worthy additions like including Roshan the Immortal from DOTA2 along with the typical power fantasy revenge aspects.

Just reading the story can be painful. Fallout itself is very self aware that its culture is a satire and doesn't treat its' science and technology seriously, but "I Have a Mansion..."... more>> tries to explain subjects the author has no grasp of at all in the most painful of ways. Worse still, these explanations serve no purpose and aren't necessary to the story in any way at all.

The characters so far have just served as one dimensional power fantasy props and this lack of depth and understanding seems to permeate much of the story. <<less

Release that Witch
May 30, 2018
Status: c795
This is easily one the best stories on this entire site. Release that Witch takes the premise of a reincarnated in a fantasy world story, but sets it in a realistic world with a fairly accurate depiction of science, technology, and industrialization.

You might read some reviews that criticize the plausibility and how realistic the depiction is, but you need to consider this in context of all other stories of it's kind: it's likely that there is no other story on this site that tries to adhere to the reality of... more>> engineering, industry, and science more than this novel and I say that as someone who has a background in the sciences. Its obsession with the history, trajectory, and details of industry is what makes it even possible to criticize how accurate its depiction is. You won't see these kind of criticisms of other stories on this site because they do not provide even a remotely plausible setting and events, hence you have to entirely suspend your disbelief. Not so with Release that Witch.

Release that Witch delivers a light novel like story with a bit of a touch of capital L literature. From one perspective you have characters who's motivations and actions are exaggerated and implausible, from the other perspective you have far more varied characters who are actually driven by hopes and emotions that are established and comprehensible as opposed to just paper thin arch types and tropes, which comprise the overwhelming majority of stories here. You can tell that its' characters have been tempered by a perspective outside of the author's (and that's a good thing) and while the narrative definitely has the underpinnings of a power fantasy and is self serving to a degree, it tries to deliver more.

Does it succeed? Debatable. It starts a bit awkwardly, and takes some time to find it's legs, but what's certain is when it does, Release that Witch delivers a unique experience that no other story here even attempts. On those merits alone, you should give it a shot. <<less

It's pretty much Dungeons and Dragons the web-novel. A bit much on the rule and setting dumps, especially since most of them have no actual impact on the story, but I guess that's true of Dungeons and Dragons in the general though.

Bringing the Supermarket to the Apocalypse

Bringing the Supermarket to the Apocalypse, oh yeah and our protagonist is a expert in martial arts, and he magically is a cultivator, and he's one of the stronger ones immediately, and everyone's an asshole but our hero... you know what? Forget about the supermarket as soon as the story begins because this just another cookie cutter cultivation story.

Advent of the Archmage

The premise of the story is a common trope of being reincarnated to a game world with a wealth of knowledge of the game and future, but what's different about Advent of the Archmage is the execution. The setting, characters, and events are all things you've seen before but way in which magic and the world is presented is unique, the characters, even though they fit various tropes, are are fleshed out in interesting ways.

150 chapters of a 769 chapter web novel is too soon to say whether or not... more>> the story and characters will remain interesting and the quality of writing decent, but for now, it's a decent read. <<less
