It's always brave for an author to tackle the real world of politics when building a fantasy world. It's not easy to fully develop a fictional world when dealing specifically with issues like the economy, agriculture, foreign affairs, and such things while also dealing with character development and romance.

This novel fails to deliver on all fronts. The world building is simply not to code, and the characters are all shallow.

It's not that the premise or story are at fault; the writing and development just make the whole thing boring and... more>> unlikable. <<less

Pretty self-aware for a story of this genre. Less of an escapist fantasy and more of a satire with a solid plot.

The world building isn't quite as complete as it could be, but may be expanded on in the future.

General impression: Fun.

I'm so glad this wasn't dropped after the author changed his mind about things.

The strength of this story isn't the story, but how it's told. Every chapter makes you think "well that was silly, " but you can't stop reading til you catch up. The writing is charming (and well translated). It's good for a laugh - a really good laugh.

Check the tags, and understand that this series does a good job with pretty much all of those tags.

This is a FUN series, which I recommend reading the latest translation of, and you'll absolutely fall in love.

The storytelling is detailed yet concise.
The characters are all unique, motivated, and given depth (to the extent possible in a fast paced wn).
The plot is slice-of-life, but still manages to feel like it's progressing naturally.
The writing itself is witty and clever - you will likely laugh quite a bit.

Overall impression: On... more>> a scale of one to ten; Lys. <<less

It's a good example of an op MC who tries to stay out of things and let the world do it's thing. The characters are pretty interesting, but the chapters can feel overly descriptive. A lot of the exposition could use a tldr at the bottom, because it can feel quite repetitive. If the story picks up and the ratio of exposition to character interactions increases in the near future, I will increase the rating from a 4 to a 4.5 or 5.

I'm 3 chapters in, and it's pretty good so far! General impression: The author is pretty creative and seems to value pacing, the flow of the narrative is pretty smooth for being so descriptive, and the translation is very readable.

Just read 7, and I'm basically hooked. The writing really is catchy - gotta know what happens next!

One of the must-reads of the genre I suppose.

The actual neutrality of the MC is refreshing. Other characters are a bit 2D, and I can see why he doesn't particularly like anybody. Biggest complaint is the unneccesary timeskip where he goes from 'pretty strong' to 'basically superman' and readers are expected to suddenly remember a bunch of new characters whose introductions were skipped. Odd choice, author.

General impression: Good story, tolerable level of cliches, starting to drag, future uncertain.

This series is like a really good cup of coffee with 1 or 2 too many teaspoons of sugar.

The setting is loosely pulled from reality, and even introduces the reader to some indigenous peoples and their struggles during the colonial era - a pretty uncommon element in light novel plots. Some historical aspects are 'cleaned up' to make for a smoother, less 'gritty' read.

The 'fairy-like' sami people from northern finland and norway are not quite as described in reality, though the fashion is pretty much on point. And things like hunting, war, and other gritty realities of the era are somewhat romanticized - as if aiming for a pg rating

The characters are well developed. Everybody has their strengths and weaknesses, and they all interact pretty naturally. Dialogue is easy to follow since everybody speaks with their own personality.

The plot... The stuff that happens is pretty entertaining. It takes slice-of-life to a bit of an adventurous level. It can be frustrating at times to follow the chronology. Each volume is peppered with chapters from the distant past and future which are meant to provide insight into current events but would be better off told in order.

All in all, pretty nice, relaxing read, though maybe a little to relaxing considering the setting. <<less

General impression: It's pretty good, but could be better.

It seems like it could be a tighter story - it's hard to keep up with what arc is currently going on, and some characters feel forgotten at times. However, it's a lighthearted adventure with an op MC, so it's not hard to forgive the shortcomings of the story as a whole.

I've enjoyed this a lot so far.

While it's a good example of a political thriller, I don't think it is the most interesting story, and it can feel somewhat lazy at times:

With all of his intelligence and knowledge of future events, It feels like he should be better able to control the course of events without relying so much on others' cooperation.

However, there are unique strengths to this series:

It's enjoyable how much his past life affects his decisions and choices. It really makes the character feel complete (though morbidly insane). And MC really does manage to be charming despite his evil-ness, making you constantly second-guess whether you fully understand him.

Looking forward to the direction the MC takes this journey. <<less
