The God Slaying Hero and the Seven Covenants
June 10, 2016
Status: c22
People in this world struggle to kill basic monsters like goblins and orcs despite them being common foes that come out all the time. None of the heroes can fight the actually difficult opponents despite their overpowered goddess cheats. The MC whines nonstop about wanting to protect everyone, but instead of putting his power to real use his solution to save people is to wander around saving a minor amount of people at a time or random villages. And despite lackluster responses to everyone all the time, everyone adores the... more>> MC and constant time is wasted with his repetitive whining or people repetitively raving about how great he is. <<less

Your typical s*xless novel where everyone wants the MC but calls him a pervert for even sniffing close to any action. Could have been good with more dynamic action or without the aforementioned BS, but maybe this will still work for some slice of life fans.

Summoned As a Hero, but I Got Betrayed

Pretty much the same as every other version of this story, but with a metric crapton of porn added into the plot. For people way into porn writing, I think you will enjoy it a lot. For people looking for some epic twist on the usual iterations of revenge plots or a story flouting cliches, that seems unlikely to happen.

This is a very early review so I will happily revise if the plot actually goes anywhere significantly past wish fulfillment + porn.

I really think people are trying too hard to find serious, identical novels to other top cultivation novels. This is simply better than novels like My Beautiful Teacher, or any other various bodyguard style novel. It has a steady tone, a steady pace, and the characters make sense and multiple people besides the MC are real characters with defined personalities and independent lives.

The MC needs not rely on cunning, shamelessness, or any other gimmicks to live his life, which seems to be the problem other reviewers who love xianxia cliches... more>> are having. He just deals with the situation in front of him as required, has fun, and has a little bit too much of a soft spot for family and friends. I look forward to how this develops, hopefully he has a worthy adversary eventually because the only flaw is that it is too much of an easy ride, and the MC is too perfect and untouchable.

If you want a light comedy with a heartwarming tone that does not rely on nonstop deus ex machinaes/cheat powers, this is a pretty good fit. <<less

Altina the Sword Princess

I really, really like the dialogue. Clarisse's lines in particular are constantly great. But the response of the MC to EVERY SINGLE romantic come on is "uhh durr hurr I don't care for women in particular". Because of this, outside of the military/political plot resolutions, no real character growth can exist because everyone instantly falls for the MC's intelligence on sight without any possible chance at actual action. The reason it is to try to suck readers into caring if Altina & the MC will get together or not, but... more>> it's an awful way to plot it out - either they should actually grow together romantically (even if it stays pure, just sincerely discussing their relationship at any point ever), he should move onto somebody else, or romantic partners should stop being thrown at the MC right and left and bogging down the novel without any actual resolution. <<less

Kuro no Maou

I don't understand the low rating for this one. I guess people feel the MCs don't talk enough or feel the yandere angle is too forced?

The war situations, various fights and course of events, the enemies and allies are all very interestingly set up. And while this work does spend a lot of time with people being completely remorseless jerks - lots of people who are brainwashed into mindless or selfish killing machines, or the people doing the brainwashing discussing their unholy holy war being naturally the correct thing to... more>> triumph - when this actually tries its hand at comedy like chapter 176 it does a really good job.

This work is not original enough to be a perfect triumph of writing or anything, but it is a fine read nonetheless. This work does an extremely good job of having constant conflict without the MCs just mindlessly ramping up power or always pursuing some new magical technique, no boring, meandering cultivation explanations.

Also, the cursed item histories are fantastic! <<less

Netooku Otoko no Tanoshii Isekai Boueki (WN)

The writing is not HORRIBLE, but is extremely, tiresomely repetitive. The MC is cowardly and horrible at making money and negotiating in a story about doing business... He gets a harem handed to him (because of the cliche setting, not because he does anything impressive), but as with so many of these cliche tsundere freefalls you can tell that he is not going to actually succeed with any of the women for an incredible amount of time.

None of the other characters have particularly great personalities either since the author is... more>> fairly poor at writing stimulating dialogue if not about the plot or general situations, so I really cannot see any way this is worth reading. <<less

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku o!
June 15, 2016
Status: v5 epilogue
I mean the harem but total s*xless "made literally for anime" environment is a bad cliche, and then you know every time the party saves the day that it is just going to lead to something bad. It is ok for a joke, but that is exactly what it is - just OK, not good.

By volume 4-5 the "harem" members are just constantly treating him terribly. He may be a bland loser MC, but that is really a lazy "joke". Honestly this would be a much cuter and smoother read... more>> if the man MC was left out altogether. <<less

This is relentlessly funny, close to the most a series has made me laugh in just 24 chapters. The initial setting may be cliche and the MC's life may be going rather too smoothly as far as power ups, but he seems to be headed down the path of the protagonist who gets jerked around by other people being horribly overenthusiastic which is usually a solid place to go to for comedy.

The dialogue is well written I see no chance that this stops being funny and interesting going forward.

EDIT: It... more>> stopped being funny. Getting to trainwreck levels of "typical hetare mc" recently... idk how to rate this anymore. 5 star vol 1-2 + 2 star vol 3 lol? <<less

A story with ONLY unreasonable people. That's every character, every bit of plot, and every bit of dialogue just stemming from people utterly disregarding each other.

And every character they run into belongs to a gang. That... isn't a very good running joke or plot device.

Honestly I wanted to leave this with a funny review like "people need to keep in mind is that this is actually a paradoxical tale about a man who follows every single moral his grandfather ever preached just because his grandfather had multiple women, even though everything his grandfather preached makes him a terrible square and hinders his attempts at flirting 100% of the time he takes the morals to heart.". Because this author does write good comedy to some extent and it is fun.

But honestly this would be a... more>> much more fun work if not for your typical "every single antagonist, even after being beaten bloody, refuses to back down and instead doubles or triples or quadruples down on the antagonism" thing. It really drags things out and is just exhausting. <<less

I Reincarnated Into a Vending Machine
July 6, 2016
Status: c23
This dude is putting more work into being a vending machine than I put into living.

But realistically I am unsure how far they can really take the plot. So far the relationship between the two leading MCs has been pretty great, but it is hard to imagine many more interesting adventures coming without some sort of shakeup. If it just stays in a slice of life pattern or "slowly powering up" pattern then this story, while pleasant, is not going to be as good as it could be.

I’ll Live My Second Life!

This story has well written dialogue that would normally suit a higher rating. Unfortunately none of the characters are particularly fun, and since neither Fii's attitude nor her mistreatment makes much logical sense, the story ends up meandering quite a bit. Fiiru being almost entirely absent from the story so far also greatly reduces any intrigue - I assume this is to make it easier for readers to accept Fii and the King having a romantic relationship later (my guess not a spoiler), and if that ends up being the... more>> case I find that to be extremely poor plotting/writing to me. Even if that is not where things end up heading, excluding Fiiru from the plot to this extent makes the setup flimsier and less substantive. <<less

Unfortunately this is really badly written. Besides Luser, not a single character really has any individuality after an entire volume, and even he is not really "fun" just the one who has the most definitive personality. This is just one of the driest works I have ever read, utterly mundane.

Dragon-Marked War God

It's like every other xanxia, only if you took out every bit of flourish. The MC powers up and everyone spends time circlejerking him, but the details are sparse, the action is sparse, the cultivation is entirely generic. Besides the ruthlessness, this doesn't have a single original selling point, but either way it doesn't have any good writing.

This is a bit of an early drop so I can hardly claim with complete confidence it never improves, but I also can hardly guess how it would.

Personally I always find these lazy/pessimistic MC types to be very lame unless there is an extremely good writing style or sense of humor, and this one just goes much more the slice of life route so it isn't for me at all. If I had to say there is one good thing, at least

Spoiler

the main characters actually sleep together relatively quickly for once, so much more decisive than a bunch of other harem comedies out there

Hero? I’ve Long Stopped Being One

So basically some sort of mix of OPM (for the powerup style - just happens and becomes impossibly stronger than everyone else) + Samurai Flamenco world setting (the rest of the setting, including both the alien parts & corny fights & dense MC). Hopefully it will have some funnier jokes or bring something funnier to the table later! Will have to wait and see.

Dragon-Blooded War God

Status: c100
So the start. Apparently, despite being a child genius who was the best in the clan, because his dad was a cripple and his mom hated him he got no resources and was taught no techniques. Usually when novels go with the cliche abandonment setup at least usually the parents love the kid if alive, even though the entire other world does him wrong. In this case, the dad barely talked to him in his life, and his mom openly despises him and does everything in her power to do... more>> him wrong.

The real killer is that he gets in a fight every f**king breath he takes. At least in other novels there are actual reasons like people wanting the MC's unreasonably beautiful women. To give 2 good examples, a random herb shop worker? Ends up f**king hating his guts (this is mentioned over and over just in the 2 times they meet) within the span of about a paragraph of meeting him for reasons like... probably being a country bumpkin. In another case, and this one is really special logic; so he has a blood feud with this one family blah blah cliches, but the best part when random boss of the people he's in the feud with guy shows up to piss on him, a woman who wants his attention and randomly has "super connections" ends up hating the MC for taking a SECOND of pretty boy boss's attention. These are just the problems he ends up with in the victiny of his life or death blood feuds!

If there is one thing that may have potential, the romance seems fine or even nice. But no reason to stick around through all this other crap just for that. As far as comparing it to PMG (which it is about as bad as), although the rate of picking up fights for no reason is as bad as PMG, at least the fights are not quite as bad. <<less

Overbearingly tsundere harem members (who treat the MC with disdain only to be eternally forgiven) and an "always nice" MC makes for a pretty cookie cutter, mediocre novel.

Legend of the Cultivation God
September 8, 2016
Status: c154
Very, very slow paced and deliberate. The world is desolate as far as cultivation talent despite tons of people cultivating, so while it does a good job at building relationships, it also explores the amount of powering up in 150 chapters that most works do in 5-20. The deliberation makes for a nice view of the journey... it just may not be a very good journey.
