I decided to write this review as I felt there was not much buzz about this book, which is a shame. I think people who likes DE, TMW and similar books will enjoy this. Unfortunately people have also reviewed this negatively because of this comparison as they felt that it is a ripoff of those. I want to say two things about that. (1) This was written before DE or TMW so you might say they ripped off TE, although considering all books are derived from Taoism I would suggest... more>> people read books about Taoism if they want "authenticity#. (2) A lot of people enjoys DE and TMW so comparing a book to it is actually quite good if it is done right.

TE does it right. Is TE a great book. Just like DE, TMW etc I would say no, but I still enjoyed reading them. I have lost interest in Chinese novels for a while and only rekindled my interest when I started reading TE. So much that I started MTL. It has all the same mistakes like the other books with familiar tropes. I do not understand why Chinese writers insist on writing harems when it's pretty much the same "jadelike beauty" with different names. But it has given me some surprises by not going the route I was expecting and I quite like that 400+ chapters in some secondary characters have turned up a couple of times so they have not been forgotten yet in MC's road to excellence (like so many other books).

The translation quality is good. I am what they call a grammar nazi and so far there has not been many things that have made me cringe. Another thing is also the speed of translation as one chapter is posted every day so far.

To sum up I have read pretty much all the Chinese novels that have more than 300+ chapters translated. Add that on top of the whole QI debacle has made me pretty tired of Chinese novels and I stayed away from them for months. So for TE to rekindle my interest, it can not be that bad right? I honestly would have given this 4 stars but for drumming up some support I gave one extra. Normally, unless they are really good, I just don't write any reviews. <<less

I don't know why, even though I enjoyed them at the time of reading, the majority of KR novels don't leave much impression after I have finished it. So far PTO have bucked that trend. I found the first 4-5 chapters kind of slow and boring. The world did not seem interesting. But then the story started to grow on me and I am really rooting for Tiyo, the gnome. The MC is kind of boring but I like his alterego Crockta the orc. I find myself invested in that... more>> mmo world. If you like Korean novels and VRMMO then give this a try. I think it is worth it. And do not forget it is a Rainbowturtle translation. That girl has mad speed. <<less

So glad Gravity picked up this novel when it was dropped by the original translator. This is definitely one of the best novels I have read. The writing is superb and the characters are characters and not plot devices. Even the antagonists have their reasons for what they do and are not simple cannon fodder to feed MC's ego (the MC from PMG comes to mind here). My only regret... it was so good that once I caught up with the translation I could not wait and read the forums... more>> for spoilers. You do not want to read the spoilers as this is a story well worth reading at its own pace. Now all I can do is let the chapters accumulate so I can binge read it.
Story wise it is great but also on a writing perspective it holds such a high standard. I definitely hope that more people discover this novel and push up its popularity. <<less

World of Cultivation

This is one of my must read novels. It took me a couple of chapters to get into it but as you can see from my username, I love the MC. He is not the usual, OP arrogant MC or the self righteous scholarly type. Instead he is this little money loving freak who also loves cultivation techniques. The translator does a good job as this does not seem to be an easy novel to translate. However, it could be difficult for new readers to digest jingshi, jindan, and other... more>> terminology. I can understand why the translator chose not to translate those as it preserves the integrity of the language. The release date is awesome and I pretty much read it every day within 1 hour from release as I look forward to next chapter.

The world is different as you have yao and mo who are fauna based races and beast based races that compete with humans for territory. They each have different cultivation methods. This novel talks a lot about different cultivation methods and forging/arrays etc. There was an arc that was pretty much city building and now it is on army building. The cast is vast and so far some earlier characters makes a return later so they are not discarded. Please give this novel a try as it is definitely one of the better ones out there. <<less

Emperor’s Domination

Have read all the translated chapters so far (ch 164) and it is one of my must read novels. There are familiar tropes here with arrogant op MC and people telling him he is trash as well as ridiculous numbers. Thankfully, so far, the numbers have not gone to IET's level (author of Desolate Era etc.). As for the arrogance, unlike a lot of other novels, this MC has a right to it as he is literally 1 million years old and has accumulated a lot of knowledge which he... more>> uses to dominate his enemies (hence the title). He is powerful but he makes plans, using his knowledge of the various secrets to destroy his enemies. This is arrogance done right, unlike PMG (Peerless Martial God) where I just wanted to beat the MC up for being a hypocrite.

What makes this novel a fresh breath to me is the world building. The cultivation is different and there are a lot of hints about fanciful places and races. Even though not much has been told about them they are around, making this world not just another human dominated world. The latest chapters are in a burial ground with incredibly powerful undead and the descriptions are so much more fantastic then the general D&D novel of skeletons, zombies, mummies and vampires.

So are there anything bad with this novel? Some reviewers said it is the same trope over and over and others complain about characters getting ditched. So far, the translation has not reach that yet so I can not say. The only slightly negative thing I can say is that he can go into detail on some things like the cultivation that can be a bit much. But otherwise it is an extremely exciting and fantastical read that I highly recommend.
Also, the translator does a good job and has decent release schedule. I am very picky with grammar, spelling etc but can only remember maybe 5 instances in all 164 chapters. So please give this novel a try as it is one of the better ones out there. <<less

This is such a fun read I wished I could read Chinese so I could finish this. It took me a while to discover it and I regretted that. Trust me people, give this novel a try. It is such a fresh breath from the plethora of xianxia/xuanhuan stories out there. The MC is funny and his troll army is awesome. You get insights on so much Chinese culture and there are so many laugh out loud moments. The translator does such a great job giving links on the Chinese... more>> culture/meme/songs etc mentioned that you get another aspect/understanding of the story.

I love the way he scolds the people who offends him and pretty much publicly destroys their faces. It is so satisfying. I wish there were more novels like this out there as I am pretty burnt out with the xianxia/xuanhuan genre.

Edit, as of 24 Oct 2016 I could not wait and read the machine translation to around 900+. I found myself laughing out loud so many times in the latter chapters. This series just gets better and better. Personal opinion - some chapters around 200+ and 400+ was a bit boring for me as he was in a period of struggle. I did not like the hacker arc or the Japanese arc. But as for the rest. Seriously, you need to read this laugh out loud story. Once I catch up to the release I will go back to the translation as Legge and CKtalon does an amazing job, not just with the translation but also giving links to the poems, songs etc that were mentioned and thereby giving even more understanding and immersion to the story. <<less

ISSTH, such a classic. Before I read it I saw a lot of people on noveltranslations (reddit) recommend it and after reading it I can understand why. What a journey. It starts out slooow as other reviewers have warned, but once you get past the first arc (chapter +70ish) it introduces you to a crazy world and even crazier universe. I loved the alchemy arc but, although I liked the story, I did not start to love it until somewhere around late 300 where I found myself laughing out loud.... more>> I expected action, hardship, maybe even tragedy from this genre. I just did not expect Meng Hao to be such a troll or Lord Fifth to be so shameless.

ISSTH is a classic to me because it is so far from a western fantasy it can get, filled with eastern and daoist themes. The monsters, the gods, the settings are incredible. Yes, in the end the numbers starts to become ridiculous with skills that can turn you to incredibly tall giants etc. But it does not give the IET vibe (who just gives me a feeling that he is throwing out numbers) but rather a sense of just how friggin awesome and powerful these figures are.

I have one pet peeve though which is the usage of the word "shocked". In some chapters I started to get annoyed with all these people who were "shocked" by Meng Hao. Either the author needs to expand his vocabulary or the translator does. Mind you, I am not criticizing Deathblade (the translator). His release speed is insane (two chapters a day, consistently, and sometimes three). But that is not all, if you try reading machine translation of ISSTH you will realise how fiendishly difficult this novel is to translate. DB does an amazing job. I am very particular about the grammar, spelling etc (hence my pet peeve) but the translation is of exceedingly high quality. Given the release schedule that is a mean feat.

I really believe everyone who reads this genre should read ISSTH. I am in awe over the author Er Gen and wants to read his other stories, expecially Xian Ni (Renegade Immortal). However, I heard that it is tragic and I do not like those so I will wait until the translation is finished on Xian Ni before reading it. I also heard the translation on Xian Ni is not of the same standard as ISSTH, which just shows how good DB is. <<less

I was looking for novels with lots of chapters and this had +400 and a lot of people recommended it. What the hell? This is such a garbage. I sympathized with the MC at first but in the end I actually wanted to join the people who wanted to kill him. The writing is utter rubbish as it is just same repeat of "you are trash! Arrgh! *Dead*". The MC kept telling people how shameless they were for the way they act in almost every encounter I felt that the... more>> author must have a copy paste for that dialogue. Everyone is arrogant but honestly, I find the MC to be the worst as he becomes a hypocrite.

There was a huge controversy with the translator disappearing for months with little to no info on whether the novel was dropped. I am not going to go into that except say that when she was translating, her release schedule was incredible. Maybe once the story is finished translating I will go back to finishing it. But that has more to do with my OCD personality than actual interest for the story. <<less

A scifi/superhero type of novel. Rare when most translated novels are xianxia/xuanhuan. I find this novel to be a fresh breath. The pacing is fast and it reads like a DC/Marvel comic. I got hooked on it as it was so easy to get into the story. Another sci fi novel I read is Skyfire Avenue, but although it is good I find SA to be a bit slower in pace. GDN has a lot of action, super powers, space ship etc. I hope more people will discover this novel... more>> because it is such fun read. <<less

Coiling Dragon

My first webnovel. There are better ones out there (Ze Tian Ji, World of Cultivation, Transcending the Nine Heavens, ISSTH, Emperor's Domination) but when I first read it I felt like my mind was blown. It felt like I read a hybrid of superhero comic book/martial arts a la Crouching Tiger. The story was absolutely amazing after having read pretty much all the major western fantasy stories such as The Wheel of Time series, The Malazan Book of the Fallen (I highly recommend that one).

Having now read other stories I... more>> would say that the author IET is the Michael Bay of the genre. His novels are bombastic and the numbers he throws out are ridiculous. But despite the flashy action, his stories (Coiling Dragon, Stellar Transformation, Desolate Era) lacks substance. It does not mean that they are not enjoyable, just as I enjoy a summer block buster. For people who have never read a Chinese webnovel I highly recommend Coiling Dragon as it starts out similar to a Dungeons and Dragon novel with magicians and warriors. The names are westernized so easier to remember. I even recommended my friend this novel. It is a good novel. Just know that there are even better novels out there after finishing reading this. And one huge plus going for this novel is that it is completely translated. <<less
