Quickly Wear the Face of the Devil

This is one of my all time favourite BL novels, and Chinese web novels in general. I love the episodic nature of the novel and the cynical MC. My only complaint would be that the last arc/epilogue felt rather rushed... But it's still an amazing story

Get Lost! I Don’t Have a Traitorous Disciple Like You

I do have a weakness for stories based on online gaming provided they are not based on real-life games like LoL (those tend to be incomprehensible to non-gamers like me) . This one though is more in the style of Just One Smile is Charming a.k.a Love O2O, my very first C-novel and a top favourite even now. So it has a virtual setting and all the usual quests, PvP duels etc, without going into details of specific moves, detailed descriptions of specific strategies etc. Also the focus... more>> is predominantly on the interactions between the MC, the ML and the latter's guild members. I for one enjoy this sort of stories more, but if you prefer books that are more gaming-heavy, this may not be the book for you.

What I liked:

  1. the game world, a very realistic and immersive holographic one
    Spoiler

apparently you can even experience physical sensations, both painful and pleasurable

    [collapse]
  2. the ML's guild members
  3. the realities of being in a relationship of this sort (it is a BL novel) is handled fairly realistically, as opposed to novels where everybody and their second cousin is gay.
What jarred:

  1. the way the MC's personality and psychological problems are handled is totally unrealistic.
    Spoiler

for instance, both a professor who is presented as a sort of mentor to the MC and ML, as well as the ML offer ridiculously childish "solutions" to what is a fairly serious psychological trauma, instead of advising the MC to see a therapist, which I strongly feel is needed

    [collapse]
. In fact, the relationship between the MC and ML would be improbable if not downright impossible in real-life with the MC's condition; at least as long as the MC doesn't receive some sort of professional therapy.
  2. the dynamics of the relationship between the MC and ML
    Spoiler

the MC is both emotionally and s*xually cold. Nearly every instance of the love-making between the two is initiated by the ML, that too a bit too forcefully for my comfort. It doesn't feel very healthy

Unprecedented Pill Refiner: Entitled Ninth Young Lady

This book is a wonderfully light-hearted romp. If you are tired of the usual sister vs sister, stupid fiance, revenge heavy plots in the usual books of this genre, then this is a perfect read for you.

The MC is truly shameless, in the best way. She does what she wants, but has her own principles and bottom line, which she never crosses.

The usual gender roles are wonderfully reversed, and the MC both 'bullies' and 'pampers' the ML, with his full (though discreet) consent of course ;-)

There are some really... more>> lovable side characters and the story arcs are quickly resolved with zero filler chapters....

The translators are doing a wonderful job and I can't wait to truly savour the book a second time through their translation (vs my first machine-translated read through)

All in all, I highly recommend this book and this particular translation of you're looking for a fun, relatively quick read. <<less

Every Vicious Woman Needs a Loyal Man

this could have been a great story, but somehow it never really lived up to it's potential.... which was sad. I was especially disappointed with the MC's character

Spoiler

She's supposed to be a re-born 27 year-old, but she's way too childish for that. Moreover, the relationship between the MC and the ML leaves a lot to be desired

A short light hearted read about a shou with clear priorities.... Lol.

Please find be put off by the length.... It is meant to be a short story after all.....

As long as you accept the length and the limitations that come with it, you'll find it to be a cute, fun read

You Are Still Here

this story put me through an emotional wringer.... but it was also deeply satisfying. the two main leads are both flawed and human.... they make mistakes and hurt each other and other people, not all their mistakes are magically wiped clean by the end of the story and they do have to live with the scars... but life goes on. In the end, they are able to find peace in a large measure, which is the best we can manage in this imperfect world.

Be prepared for a large amount of... more>> angst all around. this is not a fluffy book by any means. but it is satisfying in a bittersweet way. Highly recommend if you are looking for a realistic, bittersweet but ultimately hopeful love story <<less

To Be A Virtuous Wife

To think I passed over this several times because of the summary. This is a great novel with a fantastic translator. I really liked the author, but the translator's skill is exceptional. I would happily pay for such a translation and if ever she decides to make an official ebook available, I'd buy it without a second thought.

This was a nice though short read. Because of the length, there wasn't much character development and many of the characters aren't fleshed out. This is a pity since both the male lead and the second male lead could have been truly memorable characters. Fortunately the female lead is a strongly sketched character who was a delight to get to know. I instantly fell in love with this damaged yet determined young woman with her wit and self-deprecating humor. She had a delightfully wry and cynical world view that was... more>> really fun to read. The male lead is the perfect complement to her and I was really sad that we couldn't get to know him more. I also felt that the story was really rushed towards the end with too many plot developments for what is essentially a novella/short story. It would have been better if the author had taken the time to fully flesh it out. I would love to see a drama version! <<less

A Slight Smile is Very Charming

This novel will always be special to me because it's the one that opened my eyes to the world of c-novels and the wonderful translators who work selflessly to make them available to a larger audience.

I stumbled upon 'Love O2O' and instantly fell in love with WeiWei, Xao Nai and gang....I've watched that drama multiple times and it's still one of my go-tos when I want something light and fluffy. But I did feel that there were a couple of flaws (a couple of annoying side-characters and stories and a... more>> bit too passive heroine) so when I found out it was based on a novel, I was keen to check it out. And I fell instantly in love. I think the best part about the novel (and drama for that matter) is that they never pretend to be anything other that what they are: a cute, fluffy, slice-of-life/romance about two young and like-able people meeting each other and finding out that they would like to spend their lives together. No drama, no grand ambitions, no life-or-death struggles, but rather underlining the fact that an ordinary life is still beautiful and needs no embellishments <<less
