Bone Painting Coroner

I felt strongly enough to post a review. This is mystery story that feels uncomfortable to read with interesting, but unlikable characters.

Here are the reasons to get into the story:

  • The mysteries are interesting and have complicated plots
  • The female lead is an intelligent, coolheaded person
  • The translation is good
  • The world building is very good
Here are the reasons to avoid this story:

  • The female lead's ability to obtain knowledge from bones may break your suspension of disbelief
  • The female lead's refusal to improve her situation may frustrate you
  • The male lead's "romantic gestures" may remind you of sexual harassment (I'm not a fan of this type of forceful male lead)
  • The female lead's mindless pursuit of the truth, disregard of her own life, and poor handling of consequences may frustrate you
  • The pace of the story is slow
I can't put up with being frustrated by the female lead's circumstance so I'm stopping here.

This story is solid. The main character is a sleepy dungeon master who exploits his outsider view of how dungeons function to great effect. Check out if the comedy and dungeon construction interests you.

Interesting premise with a passable start, but it ultimately falls to poor writing and poor direction. The main charater basically hangs out in his dungeon and lets things happen. This would be fine if the events were interesting, but the writing is prohibatively uninteresting. There are better stories, such as Lazy Dungeon Master or The Bound Dungeon.

This story is worth looking at. The MC gives off a feeling like "I could solve all these problems if I just put in some effort" but coasts along instead, satisfied with his current place. He's dragged along by an abusive, prideful hot girl who is all tsun, no dere for now. For the first volume so far, it's set up so that it feels like a bunch of stuff is going on in the background, but really they just talked and studied. It feels interesting even though nothing really... more>> has happened so far. I'd give it a chance if you like the main two characters. <<less

This story is worth checking out. The main draw of the story are it's characters and world building, with tragedy on the side. Most of the characters are interesting and their interactions even more so. Torture disguised as experimentation and Yanderes are basically a cheat for making an interesting setting. The writing is quite good in terms of the Yanderes and despair, but is a bit lacking in other areas. This leaves long stretches of relatively generic isekai fantasy. I suggest you try it out and see if you find... more>> it interesting.

I suggest you read from one tragedy point to the next in continuous blocks, because the long stretches of mediocre parts pass quickly when you read them in bulk and allow you to get at the nice, juicy despair. <<less

All the characters are well fleshed out, believable, and entertaining to read about. All the events in the story are consistant with the internal logic of the story and the characters are consistant with their base personalities. The main character is really fun. If you're looking for drama (I've read up to chapter 35), this is not the story for you. It is a slice-of-life about a precocious (due to her past life memories) young girl who is trying to enjoy life to the fullest.
