I’m Really a Superstar

This was by far one of the most disappointing novels I've ever read. It started off with some decent ideas but they all went to sh*t because the author simply wanted to insert random xianxia tropes to make it more appealing to a wider audience.

As someone who really doesn't care very much about racism, I was genuinely surprised by how much this book contained. I've read some seriously stupid sounding novels with content like this and they are all on the same level. They portray Chinese people and culture in... more>> this holy light and disparage people of other races. I understand that the author has to blow his own horn about how great Chinese people are to make his audience feel better, but the stupidest part about doing this is the situation his protagonist finds himself in. He isn't exactly recreating Chinese blockbusters is he? He's ripping off classic Hollywood films wholesale and finds time to disparage Americans. It's almost a meme at this point how ironic it is when you're blatantly plagiarizing intellectual property from a country you feel is lower than your own to make your protagonist seem absolutely godlike in the eyes of the people.

I feel this goes over most of the audience's heads and a maybe even the authors. News Flash: If Chinese culture and cinema is so great, stop ripping off stuff from other people and use only your own sh*t. See how far you get then. <<less

Forty Millenniums of Cultivation

Honestly loving it so far. The MC is very realistic and believable. Although it's set in the future, it still has a standard feel as a cultivation novel. His first enemy is the typical rich young master but I hope that changes sooner or later. It would be boring if this turned into PMG. Everything is explained via science, or the best sciency explanation possible for futuristic tech/cultivation wise. I'm thoroughly enjoying it and can't wait for more.

The personality that the author gave the MC is beyond infuriating. As countless other reviews have already foreshadowed, this novel is all about the author building hope for the MC and then dashing it to the ground because reasons. All the other characters don't like the MC for any particular reason other than he's a "commoner", which leads to a huge amount of bullying and the like. For some reason, our MC is Jesus/Buddha reincarnated and won't lift a finger against those who actively seek to harm him.

Spoiler

Given that he possessed the body of a boy who's mother was repeatedly and brutally raped in front of him when he was a child and all the rage that is fueling his very existence, there were a lot of more interesting paths the author could have taken. For example, he could give the MC a bipolar personality, calm, meticulous and aloof some times, and brash, spiteful and enraged at other times.

IMO it would have been much more interesting to see how that might've actually fueled his growth as a person. Instead, he's the perfect pacifist who barely utilizes violence to solve a problem despite violence sometimes being the only way to solve the problem.

[collapse]

Other than a boring MC who makes the reader rage at how stupidly naive and pacifistic he is, the side characters honestly aren't that much better. Every single girl just happens to like him (for no reason in particular) and all the guys seem to hate him (again, for no reason in particular). He's beset on all sides with the harsh realities of feudal society and yet he does absolutely nothing to even improve his own situation. I get the reasoning of he's a little guy and he can't change such a morally corrupted society, but at the same time, it's pretty stupid to also say that he has no individual thoughts of selfishness to achieve a better life for himself. He simply runs away from all of his problems instead of confronting them, which I think is the primary reason why so many people dislike this novel. <<less

The starting of a great TJSS novel. The main character is distinctly different from the likes of Tang San, Lei Feng, Zhang Gong and Hao Chen. He's kind of like a mix of all of their strongest personalities. He displays a laid back attitude like Zhang Gong, a cunning attitude like Lei Feng, a determined attitude like Hao Chen, and an air of intelligence and maturity like Tang San. The blending of personalities make him one of my favorite characters. I really look forward to reading more about his adventure.

I was very excited at the start and I still am for the rest of the story as the MC goes about his business. The one thing I noticed how the author specifically made his talent absolutely trash and was a little disappointed that the MC does not have something that would improve his perception to help him be better at martial arts. You would think after 3 lifetimes, he would gain more and more knowledge, but that doesn't seem to be the case as for some reason, the author... more>> made him an idiot as well.

Spoiler

He took what was basically 3 lifetimes to take care of a single village chief, which is stupid beyond belief. He justifies it with monologues about how the government will investigate and the like, but truth be told, he doesn't even make sue of his perfect future knowledge to even strategize a way to kill the chief without being involved. Hint: Leak to the Moorim all the secret silver he has left and hide yourself when you do it so no one knows who leaked it. That would've solved the problem and the government wouldn't care because he was hiding money from them too (he deserved it).

[collapse]

I just hope he utilizes his knowledge more often and not remain a complete moron. Later on, I'll be coming back and editing this review based on how the story progresses, but until now, 4/5. <<less

I really like how this novels been progressing so far. The MC is not arrogant, but he has a certain panache when it comes to dealing with his enemies. We are following his journey from his really sh*tty background (pretty much a jungle) to his rise in the world of cultivation. The antagonists are not competely stupid. They maintain a rather realistic sense of pride as human beings, not being afraid to admit that their talent is lower than the MCs. His personality is abosl**ely magnetic, drawing... more>> in many people with his charisma and reputation alone. I can't wait to see how the journey continues. There are a lot of things not mentioned such as his parents, his sister's background, just anything about that summary, so the potential is definitely there. I definitely recommend this to anyone who likes ATG, ISSTH and other similar titles. <<less

While it is very slow in the beginning, it gradually builds up the story. Sometimes though, he really disappointing me for a supposedly miserly person. He doesn't bother to keep aware of his surroundings causing him to get taken advantage of quite easily. It frustrated me beyond anything, but I learned to look past it. If you can handle REAL build up and story telling, check it out.
