This novel is probably the most satisfying Dungeons and Dragons type of webnovel you will read. I read everything up to the most recent translation and most of it is very satisfying. If you like the D&D genre and are looking for a well executed environment, plot, and characters then this is a must read. Its quality is excellent.

Pros:

1. Great world building, includes structure of powers in the world and the ranking of powers, includes rough overview of political landscape and the races.

2. Satisfying plot building, MC's goals and driving... more>> forces are established in the first volume as an anchor for the story.

3. Great side characters that are unique and impactful. Antagonists are well written, some are cannon fodder type of idiot baddies while others are smart and scheming and take a long time to defeat. MC's helpers and friends each have their own personality and a lot of screen time. Primary love interests are very unique, powerful, and interesting.

4. The author put a lot of time into telling a story, not just filling the page with garbage and pointless words. Very little (almost none) of the story feels like the author is just padding for the word count. You can immediately tell of the quality and skill of the author and it doesn't drop off either, it maintains it.

5. Plot lines involving politics, kingdoms, aristocracy, wars, and power struggles are all very well executed.

6. Mature aspects, bloodly and gore filled battles and sexual scenes are included throughout the novel but they do not overpower the story.

Warnings: (I don't see this as Cons but it might put some people off)

1. This novel has elements of tragedy, especially with regards to the harem. The story's female characters do not blindly fall in love with the MC and blindly stay faithful to him. This novel presents more realistic characterizations of women. Some are pure and innocent while others are scheming. Some are faithful but have their own goals and dreams. Others will betray the MC to quickly further their own goals. A few are weak women who will be influenced and manipulated by the MC's enemies.

2. Hint of NTR. Don't run away, let me explain. Many relationships the MC has with women are not love but purely lust and physical attraction. There's only a few women the MC truly loves and they do not betray him. There are some side chicks who are either weak willed or have their own agendas that betray the MC by sleeping or loving other men. I do not view this as NTR in the context of the story, because the MC himself wasn't committed to a relationship with those women in the first place.

3. After initial world building and plot building is done, there gets to a pretty stale part where the MC is just building up his army and territory by fighting one forgettable enemy after another. It gets pretty repetitive so I skipped over these parts. However, if you have the patience, some enemies actually are more impactful later on in the story and actually play a part in plot later in the story.

Cons:

I really don't have any XD. <<less

Against the Gods

Hands down the best xianxia novel out there. Ignore the reviewers who give this novel 1s as they trolls who think Martial God Asura is an amazing piece of literature.

The story is not complete but even reading the first "part" of the story (900+ chapters) will leave you incredibly satisfied and wanting more. Here are the major points worth noting in the story.

  1. The story is in a self contained world, the MC is reincarnated but within the same world. No bullsh*t loser male from Earth reincarnating into another world with some unexplained power that has nothing to do with the world he is in. The MC's OP powers are intricately tied to the story and the world that the author creates.
  2. The story is driven by emotion. The MC is not a cultivating robot who only cares about cultivating, he is not a monk that can't get a girl to save his life, he is not a saint. The MC is cultivating to protect his family and to protect his women. He is willing to go to hell and back to save them and/or avenge them.
  3. The powers the MC has are really really interesting, his powers are very OP but it actually does not detriment the story because he is constantly risking it all in life or death battles against opponents 1 or 2 realms higher than himself.
  4. The plot doesn't make you want to punch the screen like many other novels.
  5. The female characters are not useless, the harem members each have their unique strengths and they often help the MC instead of just serve as "decoration".
  6. Very active community of followers and supporters of the novel, including a wiki community.

Transmigrator Meets Reincarnator

Novel is extremely overrated. The generic story where everybody hates the female MC and is out to humiliate her, ruin her repuation, get her raped, kick her out of the house. Etc. The husband she marries is a giant douchebag.

Female MC's primary method of solving problems is her weirdly proficient culinary skills. Half the novel is about food and how amazing food wins over friends and defeats enemies. Its ridiculous. The female MC also just lets male characters literally walk all over her. When the Female MC has s*x with... more>> her husband, its literally the dude pretty much raping her every single time. There wasn't a single description of her actually enjoying sex. Really really bizarre.

The male lead / husband's personality is atrocious. Somehow female lead still falls in love with him. Too much emphasis on so many different servants but they don't add anything to the story at all. Way too much emphasis on food. <<less

This novel is simply difficult to read. The author is incapable of stringing together an interesting plotline that drives the interest of the reader.

He also fails at story pacing. He injects way too many useless dialogue into the story. The MC joins a mercenary crew of 3 people and its good and fine to establish character traits and behavior through banter. Its NOT good when that banter goes on for literally 5+ chapters. Its useless text at that point.

The characterization of the MC is atrocious. He is a coward. He... more>> is moody. He is irrational. He makes zero sense. <<less

The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor
June 21, 2018

Some people may like it, I did not.

The story about a sculptor who is basically a god at every single thing, and on top of that he can make OP sculptors that are apparently "super artistic" and give "a lot of buffs to players". I just found the whole premise of the story really dumb. Its just the standard MMORPG story where the MC gets all the main story quests, gets all the rep. Gets all the exp, gets all of the gear. These kinds of stories are absurd and... more>> stupid for someone who has actually played MMORPGs. Such stories need something else to grab my attention, and this novel just doesn't have any of that. I find this novel similar to Overgeared, there is a large percentage of people that will like it for some reason but I don't like it the same reason I don't like Overgeared. <<less

2.5/5 but I'll round it up to a 3. General premise is a reincarnation story with a twist that the female main character (FMC) already lived the same life before as a reincarnator with some OP cheats. Its still cliche that she became the empress but then fell out of favor to a concubine, lost her position, lost her children, and lost her life. I think there's a couple novels with this exact reincarnation premise.

The author put a twist into the 'meta' by allowing the female MC to not become... more>> full bloodthirsty mode. She still has her heart and kindness. She saves the male lead (ML) who actually killed her in her previous life and decides to mold and train the ML. She also forgives the crown prince who she married in the previous life and became emperor. She decides to still support him but not be romantically attached to him.

The meta shift is pretty interesting to read, however, there's some stuff with the novel that are disturbing and that I can't digest.

  1. The FMC is a princess and supposedly half siblings with the ML and the crown prince that she married in her previous life. The twist is that her mother was pregnant before marrying the previous emperor so she's not blood related. However, before either the ML or crown prince knows this, they already lust after the FMC, their 'sister'. The ML even kisses and molests her in her sleep when they platonically sleep together in the same bed.
  2. The ML in the previous life was a homicidal maniac due to the abuse and neglect he received up until his teenage years in the palace. The FMC decides to change this by teaching and training the ML starting at 6 year old and showing him familial love and affection. However, the ML still ends up as a homicidal maniac. Except this time, one that loves the FMC instead of hating her, facepalm.
  3. For a person on her third life (real life, transmigrated life, reincarnated life), she has a terrible time picking up on the lustful gazes of her army of male acquaintances. Up until ch200, the FMC has friend zoned every male who love her or lust after her. This includes the ML, crown prince, a prince of another nation acting as a spy, and some other men.
I won't discourage people from reading this novel since it does have meta shift compared to similar novels. However, just be mentally prepared for the above points. <<less

Legend of Ling Tian

Pretty good. The novel is full of plots, schemes, and different powers trying to defeat each other with smatterings of cultivation and martial arts scattered within. Its a plot driven novel, not a cultivation driven novel. Its about a reincarnated/transmigraded dude who has some OP martial art cultivation knowledge and decides to take over the new world he is in.

Some parts of it are weird. The beginning is a struggle to read because there's so many chapters of the MC as a reincarnated/transmigrated 5 year old with all the memories... more>> of his past life. So its basically an OP toddler smacking grown men around and teaching them how to train martial arts. Kind of ridiculous. After a large time skip the novel gets a lot more interesting.

The romance is ok, at least there is romance, unlike some celibate cultivation novels. Sometimes its pretty unbelievable, basically all pretty females are attracted to the MC. Also this random beggar girl the MC picks off the street to be his servant becomes one the most beautiful women in the continent... sure.

Warning, the novel has a lot of chapters dedicated to dudes having drinking parties or poem reciting parties, they are pretty pointless and you can skip them. <<less

The quality of the writing is very good. The prologue was very well written and it set a very dark, seedy, every man for himself tone for the apocalyptic world. The first ~10 chapters setup the MC very well, explained some powers decently, explained the environment and the monsters and the society. It was a really really gripping start to the story and very promising.

Then the author decides to throw everything down the drain with a 50 chapter plot sequence of complete absurdity. Some people are interested in the MC's... more>> mutant powers, they start chasing him, they go to the shelter where he stayed and proceed to destroy it and slaughter the people inside, even though he's not even there and they didn't do anything to help the MC. The MC runs, the group of people keep chasing and keep killing villages where he stayed. The MC manages to turn the tables and kill some of the bad guys, forcing them to retreat. What do the bad guys do? Get even stronger reinforcements and keep chasing. The process repeats, follow MC, slaughter some town he stayed in. MC defeats the bad guy team. The bad guys get even STRONGER help to hunt the MC. "Face palm". Whats funny is that the MC is forced the joint the same organization that was hunting him down through a really weird and unbelievable way.

I would have given this story a 2, but after the MC joins the organization, the story does improve somewhat. <<less

The Two-Faced Venerate Emperor

Status: c900
The initial premise of the novel, a fat chick using her fat to cultivate and cultivation through eating was really fun to read. I think the first arc where the female MC is still in her city and interacting with the main male love interest are pretty well written. Their interactions are funny. Solving the mystery of the murders happening around the city is pretty interesting. After that though, a lot of weaknesses start showing up.
  1. The female MC is incapable of defending herself from a variety of situations. She ends up always needing either her main male love interest or an army of other strong men who love her. Get ambushed? Need a strong man to save her. Difficulty speaking up for herself? Need a strong man to defend her. Exploring a secret realm for resources? Need a strong man to help her. And these men love her or want to jump on her but she somehow can't get them off her tail. Lastly, almost every fight she somehow gets captured and needs one of her men to save her last second.
  2. The main male love interest isn't even that attractive but there is literal army of young women who want to jump on his tool and an army of clan patriarchs and clan matriarchs that want to give their daughters to him. They all hate the female MC or want to scheme against her. It was bizarre to read and creates artificial conflict for the female MC and main male love interest. For example, the main male love interest doesn't even like women for a long time but his mother is planning who is main wife is, who is main concubine is, and basically all these ladies are ranked themselves based on their looks/cultivation talent into which rank in the harem they will be, without the guy's input.
  3. The female MC has an army of 'other' men that want to get with her and will protect her. Like I mentioned before, these other men are used to save the female MC from her uselessness but its also very annoying to read. The author doesn't seek to foster any sort of female harem because the female MC has no feelings for these other men. If the author wanted to write an actual female harem with a strong female MC that has relations with many men, that would also be fine. I'm not against female empowerment. But the female MC only loves one guy but still needs to be saved by other men which is just stupid forced plot.
  4. Fat chicks are fun and the joke was fun but its only used in the beginning and then forgotten. But obviously the author is biased against fat chicks and the joke is only used twice in 900 chapters and the second time is really only for a very short time and doesn't really count. After the female MC stops being fat, the joke is dropped. I think it was a missed opportunity to explore which would have added a lot of depth and thought to the novel. Instead, after she stops being fat, female MC just becomes more and more beautiful. I think it would have been way more interesting if the female MC alternated between skinny and long periods of being fat. That would have explored how the main male love interest would still be attracted to her or not, and the same for the 'other' men.
  5. Cultivation through food was pretty interesting in the beginning, sort of like Toriko (japanese manga). Then it just got pretty much sidelined for male/female drama between the horde of 'other' men and chicks who want to jump on the main male love interest.

This novel is literally a waste of time. You read it, and a hundred or two chapters later, you are left wondering why you are even reading this garbage. You try to analyze what part of the novel is keeping you entertained, and end up with the answer that there is literally nothing interesting or engaging about the novel.

This is not a hyperbole, this novel is worse that Martial God Asura. At least MGA fooled me into reading 1k+ chaps. This novel fails in all aspects.

  1. Cheat skill - really really boring and really weak, its almost a detriment to the story
  2. Plot - the author is incapable of stringing together a coherent plot line that can engage the audience
  3. MC personality - absolute garbage, generic, boring, weird, incomprehensible, all of the above
  4. Romance - the females are all annoying, their dialogue is annoying, their behavior is annoying
  5. Enemies - literally just terrible, can't even bother to read

This novel is very underrated. A novel about crime solving using a slightly OP cheat system that gives him tools to assist crime solving. But the system is not infallible so the MC is often put in life or death situations which allows the reader to get really engrossed during the fights. The MC still often uses his own smarts and deductive abilities to solve crimes. The crimes themselves serve as mini arcs in the story, providing readers satisfaction when a crime is fully solved.

The characters in the story are... more>> pretty interesting, they are characterized very well and jump out of the page. The way the MC interacts with people is also hilarious but not in a parody sense. The novel has serious plot but with constant scattering of laugh out loud comedy. The interactions between MC and the female lead is also hilarious and enjoyable to read. <<less

Tempest of the Stellar War

Frankly, this novel is just doesn't have a huge amount of redeeming qualities.

The MC's journey is not compelling. The MC's cheat power makes him literally the most talented young master in the entire galaxy. What else is there to do? The MC faces no risk, there are no enemies. No challenge. What is the goal of the novel? No idea.

Apparently, when the tag says early romance, it means REALLY early. The princess of the galaxy apparently just falls in love him when he is a nobody, in chapter 10?. And... more>> she's also super faithful to him, for no reason. That in-itself isn't too terrible but their romance also has zero challenges, no other prince or talented young masters to challenge the MC for the female lead.

Mech battles, this novel would actually be decent if it was real mech battles. But its not, its virtual simulation mech battles. Basically, the MC is a god at mech battles and wins every battle. Also its video game so death and losing has no meaning. There is no suspense. No tension, no challenge, garbage story. <<less

Its a decent novel in terms of writing and translation quality.

In terms of kingdom building plot, it is very lacking even compared to "The World Online" which is really similar to this novel. The power-ups the MC gets are really weird. There isn't any good "antagonists" to help the MC grow. The Harem tag is a lie b/c there isn't even a hint of the MC even noticing any girls in 200+ chapters. Interesting world building in the beginning but around the 200 chapter range it becomes a slog with... more>> no goal in sight. <<less

The Charm of Soul Pets

Definitely a very unique novel. The first arc where the MC is alone and against the world, it is quite enjoyable and refreshing. However, the story falls apart quickly because the plot lines afterwards is uninspiring and all it is is the MC going against "young masters".

Also, the author spends an abnormal amount of time describing the stage and level of soul pets, purely to pad the word count. It was tolerable at first, but after hundreds of chapters of the author describing pets and their phase and stage, its... more>> just dumb. <<less

Low quality comedy novel. Don't read it with any seriousness.

As standard with all female MC novels, there is a male romantic interest with serious mental problems that can't help but sexually assault the female MC. But the female MC is somehow powerless against him because he is handsome, a price, really powerful, blackbellied, etc. Etc. Its really really painful to read.

The interaction between the female MC and her Jesus level son is pretty funny to read, but after 100 chapters of it, it gets really old. And their interaction doesn't... more>> change. They are just cute together and they love and protect each other. That's fine, but spare me from reading anything beyond 100 chapters and I'll throw up. <<less

This novel is pretty good in the beginning. If readers enjoy court/imperial politics/drama then this novel executes this plot line very well as the MC is the hedonistic young master who suddenly becomes a genius and has to save his clan from enemies.

Some nitpicks, the plot moves very slowly. The author completely fails at writing any female character or romance at all. The cultivation system is whacky. The cheat system is also whacky.

But, if you enjoy a story driven by plot, intrigue, schemes, and not just young masters slapping each... more>> other, then this novel is quite refreshing for a while until the nitpicky parts come in. <<less

Ancient Godly Monarch
February 3, 2019
Status: c1500
Ancient Godly Monarch (AGM) is a pretty peculiar novel. I rate it 4/5 but with a caveat. This novel is enjoyable to read if you like watching an OP MC who literally can never die, slaps young masters, humiliates arrogant basatrds and just slaughters evil people left and right. In the sense of satisfying the target audience with a wish fulfillment, action packed, and mindless time wasting novel, then this is a good novel to read.

The "main" story arc of the MC trying to find out what happened to his... more>> parents is horribly executed and you can basically just ignore it.

The "side" stories all basically involve the MC's women somehow being fancied by every young master that he meets. Basically, they want to steal and f**k his women, and kill him off at the same time. Thus conflict arises, the clans backing the young masters are brought into the conflict. The MC must escape or get backing from another equally strong clan. He goes to some secret realm to train. He then powers up to kill the evil young master, all his supporters, and finally destroys the enemy clan.

Rinse and repeat.

The twist to the "side" story is when the MC's women either get kidnapped for long periods of time and he has to rescue them or they are whisked off by a higher power to "train" and the MC has to power up to follow them.

Very very repetitive.

However, the writing quality within the repetitiveness is quite good. If you actually take any one of the story arcs by themselves, they are quite good (like 50-100 chaps). The romance between the MC and the few women he actually loves and marries is also good. The rare times that the author decides to actually be creative with the plot also adds some interesting parts to the story.

This novel is extremely average if you are very familiar with the xianxia genre but there are some good points that pulls it up to a 4/5. <<less

Ever feel like ripping out your hair because the plot is super forced and stupid? Here is a summary of the first 200 chapters. MC teams up with a bunch of people to survive the apocalypse, in that group is another dude who is a complete d**k and later becomes evil and wants to kill the MC. Somehow, this evil dude constantly has "good" people as his followers. The MC's group split off from the evil dude's group but the two constantly fight each other. Every fight, side characters that... more>> are developed over tens of chapters die. The evil dude somehow got super powered up and his group is also strong as f. The fight ends, a lot of subordinates on both sides are dead. Through some stupid plot line, the MC isn't able to finish off the evil guy and he escapes. They later meet again with new subordinates, new powers, and these subordinates die again, the evil dude escapes again. Rinse and repeat.

Makes you want to reach into the screen and just slap the author. <<less
