When A Mage Revolts

I don't like this story. The author did seem to pay attention to the characters besides the MC which is interesting but the rest he completely failed my expectations.

At least to me there was not a single character I could like or relate to. MC is annoying and most of his actions left a sour taste in my mouth. All the characters besides Michelle seem dumb, the MCdespite the danger of the church and knowing about the consequences of practicing magic is just too relaxed and laid-back for a normal... more>> guy who was transported in a new world without a decent cheat. Though he claims he doesn't have the hero halo to protect him he is still too reckless provoking situations. For a normal person being kidnapped and experiencing so many terrible things would make them frightened or traumatized, I think this novel lacks in the psychological factor.

  • The most upsetting thing to m is The fact there is no strong reason to justify the main character to be a mage. It was explained that it was because he was an otaku and it was always his dream, but I think even Otaku are normal people and for normal people who most of their lives don't witness war or don't know about violence witnessing oppression will cower facing this choice for the first time. Sure, he learned it for self-defense but in my perspective a normal person who is law-abbiding would avoid delving upon it even under the threat of a curse of the witch. Why he fights for? For survival? I would believe that if he wasn't so sh*tty on his decisions. To return home? That would be a believable reason. To save the mages? For f**** Pete's sake you were tortured by mages why would you develop a good will and save them? Do you have a stockholm syndrome? If it was for himself I would believe it.
One of the things that annoyed me is that even though its explained that it is a western fantasy setting, the characters act and speak like dumbasses. Nobleman and royalty distinguished themselves because of their manners and different ways of speaking so I at least expected that the so called "ladies" introduced would act like their social position entailed instead... It felt like the "ladies" were male characters crossdressing.

You could argue and say this has humor so it shouldn't be taken so seriously. However I can name many novels who can balance the humor, tension and development better than this one like "World of Cultivation", "Experimental log of the crazy Lich" and etc.

I don't know how I was able to endure reading till this point but I can no longer keep going. <<less

This story started out good but the author doesn't seem to have any idea what is doing. If I had to resume this in topics than it would be like this:

Spoiler

- Dislikeable Main Character:

She doesn't earn anything by herself. Every single power-up, treasure or whatever rare item exists on DKCW's universe its easily obtained without Su Luo having to work a sweat or suffer to obtain it. Moreover the plot-armor is ridiculously inconsistent and even though she is supposed to be a former assassin she doesn't act like one. Both her psych and behavior remembers me of a little kid trying to act mature but failing.

- Horrible side characters -

The topic says it all. There's not a single character on the story who isn't archetypal. The bullies are the same as ever with their beloved howls of #inserts obnoxious voice# "Are you seeking death?!" "Die trash"!
Because I'm a xianxia-trash I was not really surprised or had my sensibility offended for the lack of effort the author put in writing the villains:

1. There isn't a single female character who is written on a positive light, besides Su Luo herself. Every single female on this story follows this pattern: 1.1 Loves Nangong Liuyun and hates Su Luo 1.2 Looks down on Su Luo but is interested in getting Nangong Liuyun.

2. Also, if you are a male character than you also fall in this two categories: 2.1 Familiar of the villainess thus an asshole by association 2.2 Like/admires Su Luo at first sight with no reason or logical explanation.

If you mix the two topics together you will have the tension of this story. Villainess offends Su Luo/ wants to steal love interest; MC or Love interest humilliates villainess; villainess wants revenge; drags family but ends up humilliated or losing life/body part.

3. Nangong Liuyun is an abusive asshole bordering Gary Stu territory. In the begining his macho-front and the soft side reserved for Su Luo was kind of cute but now... now I want a weapon to shoot him if I ever manage to crossover to his world. He is forceful and doesn't respect Su Luo at all or other people besides himself, which makes him unlikeable to me.

[collapse]

The only good thing about DKCW is the translator. Alyshu has been doing a great work, not only he has an excelent work ethic - it means the chapters are released as scheduled or at least he will update his status - but also its well edited. <<less

I read until chapter 115. It started really good but slowly besides still being your typical Xianxia, it became horrible. The MC is unlikeable, Qin Er, who was supposed to be his driving force faded into the background, the villains are the typical "Go! Die trash!" As for his harem, its also constituted of your typical "beauties" whose only use its ornamental. There is no character development to speak off, so even if I wanted to find some redeeming point about this novel I truly can't. I'll just drop all... more>> together and wish good luck to the brave souls who are willing to keep going. <<less

The best novel i've read in a while! Basically this is a parody of your common xianxia plot elements, MC is not particulary strong but uses his brains to get out from most of his situations.

What to say about this thing... It can't even be categorized in the same realm of the successful Cnovels.

It's just plain terrible. I don't understand how the translators have the commitment to go through the chapters disguised as torture devices.

First of all, I don't really care if the novel is following common plot devices. A good author is the kind of person that is able to rebuild a old cliche into something refreshing... Or at least make it believable.

The beginning was not good. The MC is an asshole, I don't... more>> feel it's strange that so many people hate him or look down on him. Reading his povs made me hate him. His actions do not make sense. Not only that but it feels like the author is trying to brainwashing us into believing that he is the real underdog.

Like, no. He is not an underdog. In the current world he lives there is no reason to hide his talents, when the Mu family won't even see him as a threat despite his magic power- which he just had awoken. If the MC is so dumb, please don't put much faith in the IQ level of the other characters.

Dropped at 20 characters. I'm not going to rate this novel for the sake of the translators but consider yourself warned. <<less

This is one of the best transmigration novel currently being translated. If you are sick of 1 dimensional characters, dubious plot and plot armors, and generally cliché revenge plots this is for you. The heroine is not your typicall "strong", "cold", "ruthless" transmigator that adapts to everything like a fish to water. Instead, Bai Xiang Xiu is a normal person who struggles to adjust to the new world while looking for someone's "tights" to stick in order to survive. I don't know about the villains, but the side characters currently... more>> presented have their own quirks and the world building is extremely realistic. BXX monologues are also absolutely hilarious and while she's dense she's definetly not stupid. Personally love the fact the female lead is "weak", but she has a steady personality and can clean up her own messes and that she has actual moral code unlike other heroines she's not selfish - Mei Gongqin, DMCW, etc.

As for the love interests, I really love Long Heng - ehehehe. Hopefully he is the male lead, though Song Quianyu is not bad himself. The romance is buildup in a realistic pace and the fluff and interactions between the BXQ and her love interests is absolutely delicious! This is definetly a must read! <<less

Krystal Jung in the cover of this book definetly called my attention. This is supposedly an original work so I was a bit curious to read but until now there is nothing that made me interested regarding this "novel". I read several asian fanfictions with this kind of plot so I don't think it brings anything new. The way the author writes isn't bad but the plot is also pretty average. Again it's too soon to make definite judgements, the story can become more interisting in the next chapters, but... more>> honestly I don't think i'll wait to see, since this is not something I usually like to read. <<less

I won't be rating this for now, because I still think its too early to judge this one, even so its something I would recommend for the kpop references which I appreciate and believe it makes this story somewhat worth reading. "Somewhat" - its the key word - besides that I cannot really say that the plot or even the characters are refreshing. The build-up is so-so; characters are very archetype - the main character don't add anything new to what i've read until now from other Korean novels with... more>> game-elements. It's entertaining but there's nothing that stands out and if you are looking for something with a "wow-factor" than this isn't your novel. If you love kpop like I do or you simply like this type of settings - Second-chances plus game elements and showbiz than you will like this one. <<less
