Pretty decent novel to read. The story itself was interesting due to the fact that it's kinda a reincarnation without any OP cheats or system given to our protagonist at all.

The MC has just used his own wits and smarts to face the trials that he was experiencing.

Also some people might be put off by the first few chapters but if you'll just give this novel a try and get past those chapters, I'm sure that you guys might also like this novel too

One of the better reads out there. The setting and premise is kinda cliche but the execution is good and the main character is unique among most protagonist. The first few chapters are cringe as hell and inconsequential, just ignore them and read on.

Typical of transmigration themes, our MC was an ex-soldier who died and finds himself in a fantasy magic world filled with fictional races like elves and beastmen. The world has traces of our modern day civilization like the policies, governing and technology but its minimal, you'll understand... more>> this further into the story. Unlike most novels, our MC has no talent for magic nor swordsmanship. Theres also the multiple other worlds interconnected in a web and transmigration is a known thing but kept secret. This is basically the overarching plot.

Battles and combat is not the focus of story, at least for the first hundred chapters. Though there is some action to be had for now and I believe future chapters will have more armed confrontations (seeing where the direction of the plot is heading towards as of the latest chapters). The story revolves more on conspiracies, governing, politics and bureaucracy for now, serves more for world building and as a prelude.

Since our MC has no talent, he can only rely on his wits, intelligence and cunning. He also has flexible morals, does not shy from good and bad, he sees the world in shades of grey and not just in black and white. He keeps up a facade so that no one knows what he is planning as he believes that everyone can't trusted. Most of the obstacles he overcomes are due to his resourcefulness by thinking outside the box. He is frequently described as a lunatic due to his extremist views and especially his extreme actions (remember, MC has no superpower or talent so he has to resort to using his brains and do the crazy to survive).

Spoiler

When Isaac was made Lord of a corrupt and decaying city where he'll be executed if the city does not profit, he instead turned it into a Las Vegas with legalized vices such as casinos, high class prostitution and other types of entertainment. He fooled the syndicates and reined them in but still allow them to run the city however made it mandatory that children must be fed.

When the city became prosperous and was attacked by a Duke hungry for the profits, Isaac became an arsonist. The city does not have walls nor a standing army so he barricaded the slums, lured the enemy army in and set the city on fire burning the army to death and also a quarter of the city. Now he can develop the slums at lesser cost too. When the emperor questioned him about the arson, his answer was if he was gonna die and lose what he had built, he might as well destroy the city so no one will get it.

Isaac allows his subordinates and partners to embezzle state funds and told them to make sure its not too obvious but he actually uses it as blackmail material to control them.

When the emperor tried to strong arm Isaac into being his minion, Isaac puts out impossible demands, stabbed a royal guard in the neck and casually inform the emperor that he should be prepared to pay the price if he wants to make use of Isaac.

When promoted to a Director of Security and had to set up a team, Isaac told the council he does not need agents and soldiers who are spies or traitors from other factions. Instead he needs dogs who would follow his every command. On the first day of training, Isaac opened fire on the recruits (elites from other divisions) as a form of survival training, ended up killing/crippling a few which triggered the observers into stopping him but they got relieved of command for intervention as Isaac planned. He then proceed with ranger training (like forcing them to eat food thrown onto the muddy ground, basically like dogs. Yes, this is actual ranger training for those who've never served in the military before, youtube and wiki ain't gonna show you all the nasty stuff) for these recruits to pit them against each other as he was banned from direct killing.

When deserters tried to escape, Isaac blew up the airship killing them and also losing the only transport for retreat. However its not on a whim as unbeknownst to many, there were traitors and enemies within the ranks.

When the portal opened and the world was about to be invaded, Isaac ordered his team to fire into the portal to bait the enemy to send in the armored column instead of soldiers. He had dug a hole in front of the portal and the tanks end up being crushed on top of each other and buried in the hole. He then executes an enemy officer in front of a captured surveillance drone as a welcoming message.

When the Heads of other departments send their messengers to invite him, Isaac shot the messengers and send them away to inform their bosses to come in person instead of sending lackeys.

[collapse]

If you've read the spoilers then you'll understand the author's genius in creating such a protagonist. Some may questioned how is Isaac allowed to do all this but the desperate and dire situation demands someone like him. The council needs an extremist, an insane psycho, a terrorist to counter the dangerous forces lurking within and without. They need unconventional means to fight the unorthodox threat. When threatened with torture or death, Isaac is unmovable and told them to just execute him as he has got nothing to lose but he will make sure he goes out with a big bang. Isaac is like a sleeping dragon, dare to disturb his slumber then prepare to face the consequences. He does not like being used and makes sure there will be collateral damage if the different factions want to use him, as he is no hero, just a human with no magic or superpowers. His actions may be mindless, crazy, extremists stuff but in reality they are all cunningly calculated.

Unlike most other novels, this novel is more grounded and down to earth in terms of world and story concept, it is believable and realistic. There is maturity in the writing and narrative (I'm NOT talking about blood, gore and sex). Revenge is pointless, bury the hatchet if there are benefits to be had, like how MC takes in back traitors and still works with organizations who betray him because these individuals are talented and these organizations are still useful. Just renegotiate the terms but with the MC on the upper hand. There is no trust or allies but only those who can be used, just like how our MC suspects (and rightfully so) even his close subordinates and how the different factions use each other. There is no perfect victory. Everything has a price (even victory) and sacrifices are made by both you and your enemy. There is no "You killed my family, I'm gonna kill you and your nine generations, relatives, cat, dog and neighbors *clench fist* *Cry with burning eyes*" or "We are brothers for life, me and my family and my nine generations and my cat and dog will die for you" or "I defeated the evil god without anyone dying". The point being, there are no childish narratives here (unlike 90% of the garbage novels out there). Success is measured in blood; yours and your enemy's.

The secondary characters have very unique personalities, they are normal on the outside but twisted on the inside. They get some character development and there are good amounts of interactions between them. However its still lacking but kinda understandable seeing as how trust is an issue especially for MC. Most of the character focus is still on the MC, which is fine to me cos he is totally unlike all the other novels with protagonist blessed by the heavens with god given powers and people worshiping them, so I don't mind the MC taking the limelight. The main highlight is the synergy between the side characters and the MC, its contradicting, in a way their relationship is extremely dysfunctional and skewed but at the same time harmonious and robust. Their personalities are opposed to one another but funnily compliment each other well. Isaac's crazy extremist actions & train of thought drive these characters insane but its intentional too as Isaac is basically trying to break these characters mentally.

I highly recommend this novel, there are other positives but I won't make this review any longer. That said I feel this novel is kinda short at just 377 chapters it seems. Also recent chapters have had the MC getting a overpowered artefact that allows him some magic capabilities which has kinda made me worried as I do not want this novel to turn into the usual cliche superpowered MC kinda story. <<less

This one is kind of a bait and switch and then switched again.

Many readers reading the prologue should have their hopes up for that war action and whatnot, but..

It quickly changes its gears towards a more of a city building kind of theme.

... more>> This is at a state where the MC just want peace and quiet in the 2nd life.

Most people stopped here and rage quit but..

It will turn its gear around and start giving what you expect and want in the prologue at chapter 70+

The loose ends of the world building also gets fixed and the story gets really interesting from here onwards

Besides bad characterization and dumb plot, as previously discussed by @WinByDying, I also have another big provlem with this novel: the pace.

When they change from a plot point to another, this novel has the single worst transition that I ever read in a korean novel. It's pretty similar as seen in bad essays, where one paragraph feels disconnected from one another, and new ideas are just tossed into the air. This makes the whole sub-arc and arc transitions feels extremely artificial, as there is no 'filler' from a sub-arc to... more>> another, helping reduce the feeling of a 'plot queue', where another plot point is inserted, as soon as one has ended.

Although it's bad, at least it's miles better than most chinese novels that I recently tried to read. <<less

One word: Fascinating

This is not what I would expect from a story at the level of just a light novel. Right, this is not light at all. This novel depicts the story from a realistic aproach. Too realistic even, that I began to rethink about humanity as a whole.

You can't judge book by the cover, they say, as I almost missed this gem because of the plain book cover.

This novel is not perfect, I'll admit. Especially about engineering logics and the like, as I'm presuming the author is no expert... more>> at that. There are just a few plot holes, because later when you think you found a plot hole, it's revealed as just a clue about some plot twists, so after it happened a few times you began to think deeply about each words of each chapters as it can be a clue for something. Sometimes I even have to go read the previous chapters because when I found unthinkable plot twists, I began to search for the clues I'm missing out of curiosity. And believe me when I said that almost all chapters have their own plot twists or surprises, or both. You might hate this if you prefer light story with op MC, as the story itself is full of traps and clues about future plots, while the MC himself doesn't have any shred of talent and motivation about magic or swordmanship studies. The way MC survives is through plots, schemes, machinations, and back-stabbing.

Well if you have already read the novel description you'll know that the MC is a lunatic, but I'm telling you this right now, his lunacy is beyond your wildest expectation. He already experienced death once while expecting himself to go to hell, so evem when he's reincarnated he still won't pull any break even if he know he's going straight to hell. You could say he's even welcoming it, while trying to pull as much enemies as possible to accompany him to his trip to hell.

This is a dark story, so be prepared as any characters at the story could die at any moments. The death of the characters itself doesn't feel like it's just author's excuse to forcefully change the story or anything, as other authors did. Each part of the story is seamlessly joined with each other. Applaud for the translator team too, for their perfect quality translation and their explaination about each of the difficult subjects so the reader can understand the story better.

And you know what, the author is as much of lunatic as the MC (not in a bad way). Half of the total volume can be considered as character and story introduction before the starts of the real plot, and it didn't drop the novel value at all. Rather, it give the story as much details as possible, increasing your immersion and empathy to each character backstory. Imagine it, all that details in the whole novels while keeping the skewed logic and plot holes at minimum. It happened to MC too, as he's one who doesn't mind to cook his devious schemes for a long time, and then when the plan begin, hell would let loose at all his enemies. Well there are a lot of lunatics too beside the MC, so some plot twists happened here and there to pull the MC legs.

True, you might think that some of his scheme is irrational, but what would you expect from a lunatic anyways?

This is my fave so far, as the author is the first one I found to write such a beautifully crazy story.

Minor spoiler, some of you might avoid this novel because you hate the harem tag, but don't worry as you can't expect any romance from the MC, as he is a crazy lunatic from the start to the very end.

Spoiler

If you really hate harem, just don't read the second half of the side stories. The side stories itself are not crucial for the main plot, as they're supposed to satisfy your curiosity about things not being told in the main story. For example, the past of someone that doesn't make sense if the author forcefully try to explain about, so the author just told them over the side stories.

[collapse]

This is one of the novel where the author didn't ruin their own novel by rushing the ending. You could even not reading the epilogue and can still be satisfied because of the realistic open ending.
Spoiler

In fact, the epilogue is a plot twist too. The clue of it came from unexpected place, because it's small enough to miss.

[collapse]

Just a warning tho, neither me nor the author is responsible for you if you became a lunatic too after you read the novel. <<less

A fun read ☺️ I like how they ended this. I feel like All questions are answered at the resolution of it all. And all characters are fleshed out that you can like/hate even the smallest side characters. What I mean is every character have a real purpose, a part they play in the story and not just filler characters. I specially like Isaac's character. As he wasn't swayed by others, and really hold onto his character. Which is "I don't really care, unless you bother me" type. And that... more>> once you cross him, he never really go easy on his enemies end even go beyond crazy, no matter how close they were with him in the past. <<less

Simply funny seeing 1-3 stars reviews from people who only read the earlier chapters, touting plot holes and edgy. All the "plot holes" are addressed in the later chapters, and the stakes are getting more and more insane each arc, especially the latest arc.

Only read if you are ready for the long haul.

This novel is very much worth the time to read, many of the usual tropes are gone, and instead you get a really original and intriguing story. There are many times I disagree with the mc's plan, action or response to events, but even disagreeing it made no difference on my enjoyment, it really was all very fresh and interesting.

The ending was very well written, the side stories after the end were fun and gives you a glimpse at the world after.

Recommend it for anyone who loves mystery

, they are beeing filled in the most recent chapters. So it feels like the author left the holes there intentionally since the readers weren't supposed to know infinetly more then the MC.

Spoiler

Overall the MC is beeing described pretty good during an exchange in the first arc between a girl that can see the true nature of others and our MC:

“... Lazy.”

“Lazy? I think that’s perfect.”

Isaac laughed once more, but Kunette hadn’t finished speaking.

“... Lazy. A lazy, sleeping monster that has shackled itself until someone bothers it.”

Isaac had a complicated look when Kunette finished her words.

This novel is nothing like the description sets it up to be. Just look at the tags and you'll notice.

Slowly, the true nature of this WN reveals itself, and I must say it's depressing. Scheme within a scheme within a scheme, with a secret organization within a secret organization, and so on. The author teaches us not to trust anyone and anything, which is fine, every character being against the protagonist goes along with the main theme of the novel — Defying destiny; it's just that it gets old real... more>> quick. The plot takes like 70 chapters to pick up the pace, and by then, the author reveals much of his cards. Many of the twists end up being completely predictable, partly because of foreshadowing (or the author just telling us "this is the bad guy!") and partly because we start to see a pattern.

I'm just here, finding myself thinking that every character is an evil as*hole and nothing matters, so you probably should commit lifen't. Still, because the author isn't afraid to toy with their characters, there's some pretty badass and absurd moments for our MC, wich is what keeps bringing me back.

This is not the perfect novel but it's really entertaining, and although I would've preferred if it were shorter, it's worth sticking around. <<less

Author does not understand polictics or history and he is probably a normal IQ teenager who has no clue what a smart character is. All this novel has is wannabe smartass MC with lots of dumbass characters sprinkled on top. Cant believe some people rated this 5. Story is incoherent and dull.

Okay, let me just explain a few things right out the gate.

  1. Isaac is bat sh*t insane
  2. Isaac is a c*cky, apathetic as*hole of an MC.
  3. The two points above are exactly why I adore him.
The first 5 chapters do an excellent job of building up the core of Isaacs character, and the way it delves into and fleshes it out later on in the story is done really well too. His basic approach to life amounts to "feel free to kill me, but you can be damn sure we're going down together"... more>> which is just... So entertaining. It gives such a unique atmosphere to the story, you never feel worried about the MC losing or dying, you're simply excited to see how he f*cks up the enemy's plan as much as humanly possible.

Not only the MC, the side characters are decent enough on their own too, each one is given enough depth to not feel bland and even the minor ones are still relevant in the story a while after they were introduced, which is really cool. I think this story's interpretation of elves is great too. Their long lives making them not wise and secluded but boisterous, hungry for unique experiences and indifferent to the short lived races. The support character hold up too. Each holds a unique role and have enough presence to be memorable. Reisha and Kunnette are the closest thing to a typical 'harem' situation but there's a firm line marking that they aren't love interests. Love interests as a whole don't fit in with this type of story so don't expect any o' that.

Then there's Rivelia. She acts as pretty much the opposite of Isaac's everything. Diligent, talented, beautiful, serious, boatloads of authority and so very pure when we first meet her. Her clashes with our nihilistic, lazy MC are just beautiful to see. So far she's been utilised really well and I cannot wait to see where she ends up.

Now I'm just gonna say some spoilery things I adored, so don't mind me.

Spoiler

First off, the entire gambling to win the waterways strat was amazing. enjoyed every second of it. Next, the scene where he's just massacred a whole group of knights and then central shows up. And, Shockingly Reisha is on there side!?!?! What will our MC do after realising that one of his few 'close' acquaintances is on the side of the organisation which literally just kidnapped him!? What else other than point his crossbow at her and pull the trigger immediately, with a reaction that amounts to "oh look, another target". My sides almost split from that.

Oh, also that time where Rivelia was the only one who asked Isaac if he was doing alright after the kidnapping incident was way more adorable than it had any right to be. The ship would be sailing immediately in almost any other novel but unfortunately the hull has a couple holes in it called "Rivelia's absolute hatred for Isaac" and the port's crew are not going to patch it up.

It's also really interesting how Isaac keeps using 'Hero' to refer to Rivelia. Especially with how it almost seems like he's trying to fan her hatred of him to even greater heights or showing her exactly how f*cked up people can become by using himself as an example. Perhaps it's going to end with her killing him after he becomes known across the world as the insane heartless slaughterer that he is? He does put an emphasis on how it's not when you die that matters, it's how you die. Or he could just be acting like he usually does, I cannot tell but I like to think about it.

[collapse]

Okay, another thing used really well is the MC's intelligence. Some stories with big brain characters make them too smart, they predict and have a counter for everything under the sun, but Isaac (the story, not the character) has a great balance of the MC flexing his big brain muscles and getting a genuine wrench thrown into his operations. The MC's brain may be big, but it's not massive. Also it is very insane, so a lot of the emergency plans add up to 'Oh, I'm f*cked. Where is my gasoline?'. He's mostly calm and apathetic so the times he's genuinely surprised or panicked have real impact. His thought process is the right balance of realistic and absurd which improves the atmosphere of the story a lot too.

Okay, I have things to do so I'll end it here. If you're interested in the series, read the first 20 or so chapters. You'll probably find something you like. And if you don't, move on. Simple. <<less

This review is basically a counter-argument to some of the criticism for this good novel.

  • MC is not a smart one, but he knows how to read the situation between the lines from his experience.
  • As for the unrealistic scenario in the beginning of the series, why does it have to be based on a real-world scenario? This is fiction, and it was only meant to give an idea on how MC came out to be.
  • MC treats his transmigration as a vacation not a second chance in life, so the negative reviews saying he has no drive, lazy, lacking motivation is correct but not because of a s*upid reason, simply because he has no reason to be a standard badass MC meant to conquer all odds. The person himself already has no qualms of dying, so why bother to be a productive one, that's also why the initial chapters had a part of slice-of-life into it.
  • Some of the major characters being 2-dimensional and lacking motivation has a reason but minor spoilers:
    Spoiler

The bear, the cat, his sunbae-nim, one of his staff, and another boss in the slums were agents meant to monitor him, so them lacking motivation is because they don't have one, it was only a mission for them from the beginning.

  • The college administration having no power over him, they don't want to bend the law just to accommodate a single person and he's not even part of the student body which is the biggest problem, also adding the fact that he is an

A very different kind of transported to another world novel.

Our MC reincarnates into a World of swords and magic but has no Talent for it (like most people). His only advantage is his knowledge from his previous life and even that isnt too much of a cheat.

The novel starts really slowly with MC doing very little for a long time which honestly just helps build the characters and World. When MC runs into problems he will show his true colors. He doesn't really have a Moral compass and very little... more>> is off Limits for him. Pair that with his crazy ideas and you get a very scary opponent no one wants to Face.

Because MC doesnt have a cheat it means he unfortunately gets a very thick plot armour at times where he could easily be killed but won't be for I guess reasons?

Other than that the story is great. Often times you will feel like things don't really make sense but as you get more and more information a lot of things start to make sense. The ending was also great. There were a lot of twists and turns before it reached a satisfying conclusion where everything is explained.

8/10 can recommend.

Do NOT fear the harem tag. There are some girls around the MC but there is barely any talk about romance. <<less

Bit of a slow burn, but the pay off looks VERY promising. Most of the early chapters show you the Mc's state of mind, personality and way of handling things and all that so far is him holding back he's already cruel, conniving and devious but at chap 150 though you finally get a glimpse of his "potential" and I am sO for it.

Entertainment value is fine for the early chapters but it can get tedious. This novel is sensational, if you like novels with OP protagonists this novel is not for you. The novel focuses more on the development of the story, gradually revealing mysteries and building the world, the main character is crazy and insane, extremely pessimistic and a genius. The first chapter is pretty cringeworthy for various reasons, but you'll swiftly get an idea of the MC's character and after 5 chapters of inane war background story the 'real' story starts. By chapter 12 you start to look forward to what else this crazy MC's brain can cook up.

I just hope the author won't let me down. It's a possibility... After all... The prologue really was cringeworthy.
