The Failed Swordsman Who Became the Strongest After Spamming the 100 Million Years Button

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

There was a mysterious old man who approached the failed swordsman with the “100 million years button”. A magic button which can achieve the same effect as training for 100 million years if you push it.

The failed swordsman who pushed the button had his doubts, but immediately felt tremendous power rising in his body. So he pushed the button many times.

However it was a cursed button. The moment it was pushed, he was confined to the 100 million years prison of time. The first 100 years were devoted solely to training. After 1000 years he had forgotten why he swung his sword. He stopped thinking completely after 10,000 years had passed. After 100 million years he became crippled and finally managed to return to the real world. At the same time losing all his memories from the past 100 million years, the only thing that remained were his sword techniques. “I can become stronger just by pressing the button!” or so he thought and pushed the button many times after that. Foolishly trapping himself in that 100 million years of hell each time.

As he continued this loop, he began to think “If I destroy this world, will I get out of here?” A few billion years later, he finally escaped from the loop.

This is the story of a failed swordsman trying to make a name for himself in the world.

For now, four star, because I like the characters and the main plot, even if there are plot points I don't like as well as issues with the power system and the power progression of the main character. Actually, scratch that. I don't feel like the main character's power progression is what is wrong. What I feel is that they are too weak for someone who trained for a billion years in a world where swordsmanship can be its own magic. I also dislike that the author effectively replaced the... more>> swordsmanship with magic. Those are the main problems with the story.

Make note that the main character is not one of those MC's who is really powerful but still has trouble against weaklings, it just seems like the billion years thing was unnecessary and ridiculously ineffective for his martial improvement, and instead most all of that time training ended up going to magic! <<less

well if your onto this novel thinking MC is OP, yep that right for a few chapters, after that its just your usual see me grow stronger kind of novel. As for the fight, well MC take to like it really and every fight scenes is very repetitive, you go first segment, then goes the 2nd and so on and on then the MC go all full force at the near end of the fight. Then repeat this kind of generic fight scene, 18x as of chapter 125.

tl;dr its boring,... more>> not worth of re-read, its just fine if you finish reading other novels and you want to read other as a refresher <<less

This novel started out great. MC trains for nearly 100 million years, becomes super op. Or so it seemed.

Spoiler

The first big fighting arc: the tournament, and he has trouble fighting another kid his age. Like, he can do Iai faster than a 50-year-old Iai measurer veteran can see, which was sub 0.01s (avg was 0.7s), yet he loses to some punk kid?

[collapse]

And I swear the author probably realized he'd nerfed the MC too much but didn't know how to fix the story anymore. So instead went with a deus ex machina.

Spoiler

Now the MC has a hidden side, that is super op, but uncontrollable. Somehow reminds me of a ripped off version of Hollow Ichigo.

[collapse]

Yeah, as a reader who's accepted the premise where an MC trains for 100 million years, I'm expecting an absurdly OP character. But this story's now the cliched "superhero with a weakness, which is also his strength, and is a double-edge sword that the hero will probably spend many volumes trying to master".

Great start. But the author then screwed it up by changing the one thing that attracted me to it in the first place: wish-fulfilling story where a talentless person becomes unparalleled after training, and crushes all the arrogant scums who were born with talent. Ymmv. <<less

Garbage. Starts with an interesting premise, but the author is terribly inconsistent and can't decide whether the MC is tr*sh or godlike. He breaks every school record, then gets manhandled by a random "genius" kid. He's trained for billions of years, but the gap between him and everyone else, you'd think he had maybe a 5 year head start. And then they take that premise and throw it away by having him have a transformation into some merciless shounen trope with long silver hair and some kind of curse mark... more>> under his eye that's infinitely stronger than he is normally, completely tossing out the entire premise of him being OP because he's trained for literally billions of years. Billions of years of training are inferior to talented 15 year olds and random ass-pull forms. Our MC can swing a sword so fast a 50 year veteran expert can't follow it with the eye, but he's completely toyed with by another random kid from another school.

Again, cool premise dragged down by a bad and inconsistent author. <<less

This story is garbage. I tried to give this a chance, but the author just sucks. I'm putting the main issues I had up to the point I read in spoilers because I need to get this off my chest.

Spoiler

The main character trained for hundreds of millions of years then gets dropped back at the exact point he started from. The novel shows that he keeps the body training he did in the other world because he is able to make a trip that normally takes him three hours in ten minutes. He then nearly loses to a 15 year old girl with no special powers despite all this. Then he gets challenged to a duel by a b*tchy girl who wants the loser to become the winner's s*ave. He barely beats her then she goes straight from hating his guts to inviting him to live in her room that same night. Then we get a tournament arc where the character's opponent tries to mu*der a spectator before the match, and nobody says or does anything about it. So, is this a world where the strong can do whatever they want? Then they have their match and the opponent tries to kill the MC. The MC activates a superpowered split personality and tries to kill the opponent in revenge. Then, the next chapter is the opponent getting a month suspension from school for two counts of attempted mu*der, and there's people trying to get the MC expelled for trying to kill a guy who already tried to kill him. So, apparently there are supposed to be rules in this world but they're just applied arbitrarily because f*ck it, what the hell is worldbuilding anyway? I just couldn't take the s*upidity any longer and dropped it.

So basically... This is a poor man’s Chivalry of a Failed Knight, or not even that. I can accept the myth that training by yourself without pressure testing can make you weak as you can’t differentiate what’s fantasy and reality. However, he clearly proved himself multiple times that his techniques are legit stronger than anyone can even comprehend. He’s basically doing flying slashes with ease at this point.

You’ve probably read too many times about his power inconsistency, but my problem is not even that. I mean, within the span of... more>> a few chapters, it takes the whole Stella plot line from Rakudai and turns it into something so cliche that I know actively hate the generic fire princess who fought him. I’m starting to wonder if this was even supposed to be written good or not.

His mentality is too unreal even if you use Anime standards. Being isolated for one year usually impacts a person’s personality and morality, but this guy comes out of it the exact same as when he goes in.

The same goes for his first win. He doesn’t become confident after finding out that he’s super strong now. The MC just acts exactly the same as when we first see him. There’s not even a bit of realistic character development or growth in sight.

Lastly, you can only be so untalented before you become inept enough to require you changing where you put your efforts. If he still struggles against someone despite being as old as a planet, then he needs to get out of the academy and find some normal work since being a swordsman isn’t cutting it. Hopefully, this turns into a better story... but I’m not sticking around to find out. <<less

Going to preface this by saying that my actual score for this series would probably be about a 4.3. It's an entertaining read and while it doesn't keep me on the edge of my seat waiting for updates like some other series it is one I've come to expect to brighten my day a little bit. As far as the MC goes he's a hardworking likable individual and I often find myself entertained by many of his qualities not related to swordsmanship such as being a world class cheat when... more>> it comes to card games.

The MC is an herbivore but it feels like a more natural fit for him given the lack of ecchi themes and characters in the series. Also, I would say rather than being fullblown OP he is OP enough to get by and has all the potential to really shatter the worlds reasoning at some point. The author wants to drag out his development over time but not write in any over dramatic turns that would make it frustratingly slow.

A single complaint I might have is the lack of character development for the character Rose, she honestly just kind of exists and the author should really flesh her out better. <<less

Please form your own opinion is what I always say.

C'mon, you mean to say that after reading 10 chapters you can say with certainty that it deserves a 1/5? I doubt.

If you're looking at this page right now, you know exactly what you're looking for: Some op guy, swords and shounen shit.

On to the review now:I like it. It starts off strong. It has some weak parts but it does somewhat explain why it is so. MC is basically insane (in not a very bad way). He's been stuck in... more>> there for a billion years but his 'training' seems to be locked away and he unlocks it through 'willpower' and 'resolve' and all that shit.
Spoiler

His sense of time is gone. He is actually sent to prison for another 100 years in his mind while fighting some dude but he spends it training and thinks it wasn't enough.

[collapse]

MC is a kind of a generic op guy but he's not unlikeable.

The power scaling is comparable to Dragon Ball Z/Super as in there's always someone stronger so take it how you will.

The side characters don't get enough time imo so that's a con.

Well I'll keep reading it until it shits the bed and it becomes boring so yeah.

Like I said in the beginning: Form your own opinion. Don't listen to me or anyone else, trust me. Every review place sucks ass. MAL? 8/10 and the next one is 2/10. NU? 5/5 and the next one is 1/5. Who do you believe? No one and you read it yourself. <<less

Great premise, could have explored interesting concepts. Instead it's almost a carbon copy of Ichigo's (from Bleach) or Ikki's (from A Chivalry of the Failed Knight) Power with the EXACT situation as Xenoblade's protagonist. The explanations for the events that happen make no sense. We get no background on the world, why is there swordsman? Is the modern world technology powered by magic or somehow guns or ranged weapons were never invented in this world. How are high school student so powerful without them being put into a STRICT military... more>> school? (At Ch17. The MC hasn't recived one lesson even though he has been in school for over 3 years and in a new school for a week. Somehow they have one, one hour classes per week?) <<less

This actually seems quite promising. The depiction of the hell he takes to acquire his power is pretty interesting. Hopefully the author continues with this sort of writing moving forward. Another good sign is that this novel is rated very highly on Syosetsu so give it a try!

Just 2 chapters in, but it's pretty good so far. Much like the translator, I was worried that it would become another generic OP protagonist novel, but it seems a little more than that.

For starters, although he becomes stronger by pressing the button, he's essentially thrown into a living hell. Chapter 2 is dedicated to showing just how badly the immense amount of years he's forced to stay there takes his toll on him. He eventually loses his mind and forgets everything except how to swing a sword. Then he's... more>> forced right back into the world again.

The chapters are very long compared to other novels so hopefully the translator will continue working on it. <<less

I create this new account just to rant on this s*upidity.

I'm sure everyone already reviewed this tr*sh accordingly from the garbage quality of this idiocy. So, I will cut this short.

The author is an idiot who couldn't make a consistent OP MC. What's the point of training for billion years if it end up as your typical "Power Trip" bullsh*t in every generic Shounen genre? Just... why? That idiot make a premise for interesting OP MC but throw it all to make another generic Shounen's power trip bullcr*p that no... more>> one asked for. s*upid power up and plot armor have been thrown a lot into this sh*t.

Also, the harem is just like every garbage tier of Harem genre. Just a bunch of NPCs falling over an pushover beta MC for boring and tasteless reason.

In the end, I regretted reading this up to 100 chapters because I've nothing to read anymore. The fact this tr*sh made it to publication surprised me. Did the Japanese have this low taste regarding their interest in novel??? <<less

I really want to give this novel a chance but the author is making it very hard for me.

It's not the fact that the character doesn't appear to be as strong as he should be after a billion years of practice, I assume the author has a good reason for that and it will be explained eventually.

What's ruining this novel for me is that after 120 chapters, despite numerous events which should have resulted in mass fatalities, nobody has died.

Who cares if the villain run rampant if all that it... more>> means is they cause a bit of minor property damage that will be repaired after two weeks of story time?

How meaningful is it really if a mother sacrifices her life to save her daughter if her sacrifice just gets reverted on the next page? She might as well have saved herself the inconvenience because no matter what the main character was going to arrive in time to heal everyone anyway, even the characters we thought the villain had already killed.

On the other hand the "nobody is allowed to die" rule does explain why the villains always survive. The fundamentally can't do any real harm anyway so what's the point of trying to stop them permanently? Might as well just let them escape each time so the author doesn't need to bother inventing new ones. <<less

at around c260 idk I don't remember they actually develop bit why he still suck even after having trained 1 Billion years and another fun fact is that they just kinda drop interesting world building info from time to time like the fact that holy knights says that the world has a end and that the MC village doesn't exist on any map

I see where people can't get into this novel because the MC got bullied and couldn't learn swordsmanship, but could some how survive so long in the other world for not 100 million years but a billion years. I have to ask how you refused to accept that but are good with other parts of the story? They have jet planes, but the main weapons are swords, hello that isn't strange? the story isn't too good (at all really) but if you just want a novel to waste your time on then this isn't too bad (when I say waste I mean it this is garbage) there are several things they could change like instead of him being too OP (he is just tr*sh who swung his sword for 1billion years or something) make it so he has a few strong abilities but his body and magic are very bad (make it so he has to get strong even with a... more>> tr*sh body) maybe have an arc with him fighting monsters and training his body against them like in the beginning after the end.

I would have enjoyed it if they kept him weak but he still has his sword skills from training. Like maybe he has strong pressure (u know that bullshit) but the mysterious thing about him is that his body can't keep up. Or even that he isn't able to fight others too well (not used to pvp) and can't see through feints or dodge sword swings and the basis of the novel is he is getting stronger and slowly getting to the level his sword skills are at.

you could even keep the part where the old guy and his mum know each other a scenario:

(sorry in advance for the spelling and grammer. It's been like 3 days since I've slept)
1. He is still from a family of nobodies who have no talent at the sword but as it turns out his mother had ties to whatever organisation sealed the old man (time oldie) and that organisation fell but his mother was asked to run away and keep some item or something hidden from the old man. Fast forwards to the future the old man is semi free but can't interact with the world to much so he can't just walk up to the mother and kill her to steal whatever item, so he goes after her son the MC and tries to cripple him by breaking his spirit (but underestimates the will power of a main character, that bullshit) and MC escapes the training room with 100 millionish years of sword training. Now this is only sword training and his physical body didn't leave only his ego so he only has the sword technique he got from normal sword training lets call it 100 years enlightenment (cause I just read a ton of wuxia novels) so now we have an MC with moderate cheat abilities (he can almost hold his own against genius sword users) off to the duel, MC will not be able to win but will get close to it humiliating cannon forder A. The reasoning behind this is because he has no experience in fighting others (cannon fodder A is moderately talented has trained since childhood and has lots of experience in winning fights against strong opponents hence the arrogance) and his body can't keep up with his skills. (He learns this after injuring himself which decreases his fighting prowess causing him to lose. But not without gaining much attention from people in the shadows) after being kicked out of the academy he signs up for the tournament hoping to maybe catch attention of the knights and get sponsored into the army so he can send money back to his (perfectly normal, with no hidden backstory of any kind) mother. After gaining a little knowledge in dodging or feints (like "ding" - you obtained e rank dodge. And academy people are like "ding" - you have a rank dodge) nothing too high level. After getting through by the skin of his teeth last battle his is finally about to fight bounty hunter rose. Onlything is his stamina is drained and he is barely able to hold on dodging some of the more obvious attacks to his vitals (may I remind you he is about 14-ish and hasn't been given any formal training so his body is less then the average trainee) after being knocked out of the ring and literally knocked out. The headmaster of one of the best sword schools decides to enroll him into the school (the future one where he picks up harem members like nothing). During his encounter with princess (the annoying one) instead of provoking her and making a bet the MC calmly explains his side of the story defusing the princesses temper (he does not have the whole I'm super strong arrogance because he knows he is weak) MC is in same class as he was in book (even tho he is weaker) and begins to train his body like everyone else, he duels with his class mates and slowly gets a little stronger ("ding" - you are now d rank) during this time Rose the bounty hunter (the one he fought at the tournament) is interested in him and trains with him sometimes (the reason for her interest is not like it is in the book {she is interested in him cause he the first one to beat her} but because his sword techniques and usage is amazing but his body and ability to fight others are bad which confuses her as someone with his level of skill should have dueled alot as training and should have a better body from the sword training. Her interest increase when she sees his practice sword swings.). Anyway, it is now time for mana trainign (this is held back from some minor reason. It is an excuse to let MC get a little stronger) and MC is taken over by his sword ego. The sword ego is taken down by the teacher with some difficulty (not to much seeing as he is still weak and the body can't use all the 100 year enlightenment skills {year I'm keeping the name}) the sword ego is better at fighting pvp and more vicious, this whole debarcle attracts the princess's attention seeing as she's more of a magic user than sword user and wonders how mc's sword has an ego and tries to investigate him. She asks for advice like she did in the book just later on (this is because during his rampage the princess tried to stop him before the teacher did and she basically got one punched) she learns that she should focus on training her sword technique. The MC body has trained much more to lets say c level he can use his abilities to 30% of their former strength and 39% when he pushes himself (lets be fair here those abilities are something created from millions of years of training). It's time for the duel with the other school and it'll go basically the same way. MC beats illusion guy and kinda reveals to the readers that he's more broken than he lets on (this can become plot for alter on) and now it's off to the fight with super strong guy (the mean one who hurts mc's feeling in the book {immature bastard}) I know there is someone else but I hardly remember him so who cares. Any way MC gets thrashed, all while his enemy mocks him for believing that he could beat talent with willpower and training. MC goes all out 39% all the way but is beaten by the guy's ice ability. Because of his recless use of ice mc's friends get hurt and he can't do anything about it (which is the main reason he used the training button. To keep his family safe) something cracks inside him (which can maybe be the start of him relying of the sword ego because he believes he isn't strong enough) and sword ego takes over. The excess mana healing his injuries (mana cloak or whatever they call it is with increase his physical abilities while it is used so he can use 45% of his power 60% when pushing it) ice guy get's thrashed by MC and almost killed until rose and princess whats her face arrive and try to stop him (you know the whole power of friendship schtick) it works (but it won't work later on huehuehuhuhuh more stuff for later on plot woohoo) and MC falls unconcious. After he wakes up he learns that he will have to be punished for destruction of part of the arena, attempted mu*der of ice dude, and attacking fellow student (his sword ego when trying to egg on MC while his body was taken over). This is start of the adventuring arc where he will go and kill monsters with rose and the princess (they want to help him cause they feel guilty for getting punished for hurting them when he wasn't in control) for the adventuring arc it will just be MC meeting random minor characters that won't have roles later on, and him training getting stronger by fighting monsters and training with rose and princess who in turn also get stronger when he points out a couple flaws in their techniques and fighting styles. (And thats basically where I'm at in the novel) <<less

First of all, this is not up to most of the reader's expectations. Still judging by the reviews there are some who (don't know who) like this kind of "thing". Not to be judgy but man! I wasted my good time.

Second of all, do you believe anyone can stay sane after a million years not to mention a billion years!?. Granted if it was a few hundred years but a billion! He might as well as die when he is back to normal. Come on, who would want to live... more>> another 100 years when he/she have lived for billion years and remembers how he/she lived.

Lastly to top it off the MC stays a fxcking imphhh.... (Can't put to words actually) maybe something like this, when he is a wimp, he is also a moron and then he is also a piece of sh*t but he can also be fxcking dense as hell. Point is I really didn't think all s*upid personalities to be together so much so that I am having trouble what to call the MC. Back to the topic, the MC should have at least ruled over the world for all I care if he have practiced a billion years to be a op character and here it says he is defeated. Damn this is so contradicting that I just want to say I would have died on the spot if someone defeated me when I have experienced hell, Only "if" by the way. And the way the story is going who wouldn't if anyone is given the same circumstances.

I just hope the author patches some holes here and there in his plot, character and maybe everything that it just makes it unbearable to read. I don't know, he have come this far why not try again till the end.

P. S not to mention the author doesn't know which civilization he want his story to go on, talk about choices huh?. <<less

I don't understand all the hate the MC gets from the other reviewers. They expect him to be amazingly OP with all his training, which he is, but they don't grasp any of the other factors presented in the story. It seems like they want some isekai protagonist that beats everything with one hit. I personally like that even though he is OP, he still needs to try in the more difficult fights. The character growth was also enjoyable to see; seeing Allen go from having zero confidence in himself... more>> and his ability to having friends and slowly building his confidence in himself and his swordsmanship is nice touch to the story in my opinion. I would say don't pay attention to the reviews and give the story a read and see how you like it. <<less
