Description

I, the Duke’s daughter Carol Ambrose, one day suddenly had my engagement broken by my fiancé his Highness Reyford. I completely don’t have any recollection of harassing or trying to push anyone off the stairs though. But since it’s a good opportunity, I think I’ll propose to the Knight Captain I’ve yearned for ever since I was young. Because towards the white bearded and 62 years old knight captain Wilhelm-sama, there isn’t a single frivolous rumor and he’s still a bachelor.

Although it does sound cute and refreshing, I mean after so many stories with the same progress, I have a little... Maybe a big problem with this one.

The main character speak times after time that the one she actually loves is wilhelm and at first I thought it was like that and she was just a super cute maiden in love, BUT whenever she's with Wilhelm things get reeeeaaally sketchy.

Up until where I read, chapter 17, he doesn't have feelings for her and when he tries to convey... more>> that or when she realizes she is being intrusive, she goes "oh I would kill myself" "I would give up on happiness and things like that, and wilhelm clearly gets uncomfortable and accepts the situation with a lowered head.

Do you see the problem? The main cute fluffy character feels more like cunning manipulative b**** who knows the guy will do anything for her to be unharmed, and uses that to make him and WILL use it against him to get that she wants (him).

Of course, it doesnt feel like the author is writing like like on purpose, BUT THAT MAKES EVEN WORSE, there will be no love or fluffy moments, not real ones, just a girl getting what she wants and a guy prisoner in a relationship where he is afraid of being at fault of everything that may happen to her. <<less

I was tempted to be put off by the age difference but...

1) Female MC has a very good reason for liking this older guy! (that s*upid prince)

2) Somehow manages to be innocently cute and fluffy!

3) Wilhelm Aibringer-sama is such an upstanding gentleman that the world 'pe*vert' is smote down within his presence automatically!

A pretty good novel so far. I like that the heroine is strong-willed yet still acts her age. I almost didn't read it because another reviewer said she is manipulative due to her threatening to kill herself to get him to do what she wants. But
Spoiler

later that's cleared up as something she learned from romance novels. Her mother also set her straight that the way she was acting was wrong. So yes the author purposely put that end there for a reason.

I say give this novel a chance.

If you like, please read my spoiler. I have summarized the entire plot of the story thus far at chapter 96.

Summary:

Almost like your typical isekai novel minus the transmigration part, our MC (Carol) is the Duke's daughter and her engagement with the Crown Prince was annulled to the public. A Baron's daughter stole the Crown Prince's heart, but our MC is not sad, instead she is happy. The MC can finally free herself from the tedious Queen training and be with the man she loves, the 62 year old Knight... more>> Captain. But the journey to love is never smooth.

MC: to put it in a nice way, she is an innocent, naïve, virg*n Mary (absolutely no character development whatsoever, her life is all about love love love the ML)

ML: to put it in a nice way, he is a pure, loyal, bland knight (absolutely no character development whatsoever, his life is all about fight fight fight for the country)

Spoiler

As mentioned by many reviewers, the beginning in which the MC threatened the ML with her life was very toxic, but this was immediately clarified in the next couple chapters. The MC's mother lectured the MC on why she was wrong and to reflect on her behavior. The MC realized her mistake and apologizes to the ML for her reckless actions. Afterwards, the MC does her best to court the ML by making lunchboxes for him and doing her best with her medicine/pharmaceutical knowledge (learned when she was doing the Queen training) by lecturing knights on first aid/hygiene/health.

All was good and dandy until the Author suddenly rushed the plot. The Crown Prince decided to find trouble with the MC and threatened to kill her at the Duke's Mansion when the MC and her mother was no longer polite with the Prince. And following that, the Prince was arrested and stripped of his title as Crown Prince. The Baron's daughter that stole the Prince's heart was forced to be a maid for the MC. This all happened in one chapter!

Then after that the Empire is suddenly embroiled in a war and the ML is sent to the frontlines. When the army came back in triumph, the ML was announced dead and the MC turned into a crying mess in which the Father proposed for the MC to engage to the new Crown Prince, which the MC agrees to in her depression. If this is not crazy enough, on the day of the wedding with the new Crown Prince, the ML suddenly shows up as the groom and says how he survived and just returned so he didn't have time to tell her even when literally everyone else besides the MC knew about the ML's surprise return. Following that, the MC fainted on the spot from the shock, wakes up, and proceeds to get wedded to the ML. Don't worry, the worst is yet to come. On the first day of the wedding, instead of the finally awaited sweetness and fluff and mutual affection, the MC goes to the ML's residence and sees what a crappy mess his house is. Like the ML really couldn't have cleaned up his residence for his wedding?! So on the first day of marriage, the MC and her servants literally just cleaned the ML's house, for the entire f*cking day. I don't know what the Author was thinking, but this has got to be the worst way to spend your honeymoon. Not only did the MC end up cleaning the house, but the ML was called to work, so he left the entire day on his wedding night. On the following day, the ML got even more work and only came back in the morning drunk as hell with the smell of perfume and a woman's name-card in his pocket. Can you believe this crappy plot. I was finally expecting some sweetness and fluff now that they are finally together, but the Author has to add in useless drama, an irresponsible ML, and a naïve MC. This has got to be one of the most frustrating story development I have ever read in my life.

[collapse]

Overview:

I am dropping this novel. Absolutely done. How is this novel a light and fluffy read?! There is so much drama in the later chapters that it can turn into a soap opera. The author tried way too hard to add different elements into the story that the plot is just a rushed mess. <<less

It's a good romance even though the author plays a little bit too safe by adhering to commonly established working plot so people who reads a lot probably can guess the structure of the story easily. The story itself is rather light so it's decent for quick read and entertaining but on the other hand almost every conflict is resolved rather fast. Maybe it's like salad, easy to digest and fresh but for people who's hungry it's a little bit unsatisfying.

Okay, I've been peeking forward in the raws and I think this will turn out to be a really cute story. Not sappy like so many romances, and hopefully not very "Hallmark Channel" *shudders*

It reminds me a lot of Marietta-hime. The premise does, at least. The play on the otome game-like beginning made me chuckle, although I'm not entirely certain that was the desired effect.

Liking this so far, I mean out of the translated novels this takes an interesting spin on the whole "otome game" (this story isn't otome btw) cliche start. The character also sounds smart and has a logical, kind, and cute bearing that the MC from common sense of a duke's daughter has. Looking forward to this piece of fluff :)

5/5 until further chapters are released

Can someone please slap MC so hard. She is forcing poor old gentlemen. She is mental ret*rd and crazy. Why people think this heartwarming and cute. Is this force marriage is sweet and fluffy cute to people's eyes. I hope this novel don't blind people to think forcing is cute.

Its not to my taste, but it is a good albeit fluffy story. Carol is a pretty sensible, but innocent protagonist, she swallowed down her desires and gets engaged to the prince; only for that idiotic prince to break his engagement and denounce her in front of many. Free from her shackles of queenhood, she takes her freedom grabs onto Wilhelm as soon as possible! And thus we start Carol's journey to woo Wilhelm.

Overall, it's pretty light hearted and if anyone is concerned over the age gape, Wilhelm is a... more>> gentleman through and through, who tries his best to dissuade Carol. Carol's also likeable, she's not one of those hyper, "my pace!" Protagonists, she's smart but not a schemer, and generally pretty down to earth, albeit a bit naive and tries to employ romance novel tactics sometimes. My only "complaint" would be the one chapter explaining how Wilhelm was best friends with her grandfather, and came to see his best friend's family like his own (he originally saw Carol as his granddaughter and was mad at the prince rejected her in such a way). With that kind of chapter, it gave me extremely mixed feelings about a girl whose like a granddaughter coming after you and really would have rather preferred them to be acquaintances at first.

And, for anyone whose wondering about the end pairing/hoping some other guy comes in or whatever:

Spoiler

Carol really does end up with Wilhelm in the end!

Being a young woman interested in forbidden romances, I was excited about the vast age difference in this story. I wanted to know how the characters, despite being so different, would interact with each other.

In the end, it feels like a story written by a 13-year-old (mind you, I only read to chapter 24).

It's as if she will not accept Wilhelm (62) not accepting her. It does not matter that he does not like her, she will stay annoyingly at his side, but if he says he does not like... more>> her she will cry and threaten to bite off her tongue. At this point, it's not like he has a choice but to accept her. Uggggh... She is an idiot, dense, naive, and annoying.

I would not have minded her being like this so much if Wilhelm (62) was not just as big an idiot. He ALWAYS gives into her, never correcting her behavior, and from the beginning already seems to have fallen for her pushiness. Despite being a hardened-war-hero he believes weapons should not be used when patrolling. He says it is because weapons should not be used against citizens... But do they not patrol to protect citizens? If you were a soldier, patrolling the town and you came upon two young children being kidnapped to be sold into s*avery, pulled along by 5 large men with nothing to lose you would want a sword to protect yourself with. I say 'protect yourself' because that's probably all you could do at that point, let alone save the kids.

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa......................

FOOOL!!!!

In Conclusion...

Carol is adorable. She is hard-working and tries hard to be understanding. Wilhelm is loyal and pure. The character ideas themselves are not terrible. It has a good amount of politics, even. Yet, the innocence overshoots the basket by a mile. It is overwhelmingly simple and hardly realistic. I was quite disappointed.

If none of this bothers you I'm sure this would be a great, fluffy story with a savory romance if you were to continue reading. <<less

Starts as a nice, fluffy sort of love story. Lost interest after the heroine hinges her whole existence on another person liking her. The repeated statements "I'll kill myself if you say you don't return my affection" are a pretty terrible character trait.

I'm sure it'll eventually turn around, but... hard pass.

Finally, it's over. I really couldn't stand MC anymore. She is so childish and naive. In the ealier chapter, she threatened ML with su*cide when he didn't accept her. But after being reprimanded by her mother, she slowly became more mature and stronger and that's when I started to root for her.

But she acted childish again after their marriage. She knew from the beginning the risk of being ML's wife. She's bound to be lonely because he'll be so busy with his work (that's why he didn't want to have... more>> a family in the first place). Instead of being supportive, she sulked everyday and even complained to her mother. No wonder ML still couldn't treat her like a mature woman. I don't think she should marry (anyone, not just ML) if she still acted like that. What if someday she has a child when she herself is still a child (both at age and behaviour) ?

In fact, my favorite character in this novel is not MC or ML but MC's mother. I love how supportive she is. She also respected her children's choices and decisions despite how bizzare they are (for example: MC's decision to marry ML and MC's brother's love for his servant who is 10 years older than him). But it doesn't mean she's perfect though. Sometimes she could be negligent towards MC's safety. For example: Robert's case. I knew he's her older brother (and MC's uncle) but how could she let her beloved daughter gone anywhere near him when she knew that he used to be a s*x offender? He even harassed MC once but no action taken towards him and the result was: MC was kidnapped by him and almost r*p*d. Well, at least ML came and saved the day. <<less

It's okay, but there's as much chemistry between Carol and Wilhelm as you'd expect from any romantic relationship between a 16 and 62-year-old. Which is to say, none.

The affection feels almost disturbingly one-sided on the part of Carol, and while it's cute, I never managed to grasp the fluffy romantic feeling the author is angling towards because their relationship feels like a grandfather with his granddaughter. Since it is a 46 year age gap, that's not surprising and I can't fault the author for coming short on such a challenging... more>> task, but I'd only really recommend this if you're really into massive age gaps. <<less

After finishing re:zero Wilhelm-san you have a new job now huh... Wait I thought you're married!?

Well anyway onward with the review.

I must say that it gives me a breath of fresh air away from the common xianxia and wuxia genres much to the chagrin of others who like but who am I to judge. Well like the others say it is indeed a good story and a bit different to the normal "otome" styles. If you guys want to breathe a fresh air away. Read novels that has slice of... more>> life like this novel. <<less

Well, the threat of su*cide is what made me completely not gonna read any further, it is the only reason. Otherwise I am sure I would have enjoyed it, which was supposed to be a fluffy kind of romance.

It is just that NG and to be frank, I have nothing positive to say to anyone who does not see it as major con at least and I do not think I have to elaborate on why such a thing is quite possibly the worst that can happen in a "fluffy"... more>> romance.

I really am tempted to make an exception to my "no rating unless absolutely perfect" way of doing ratings (rather sticking to systems like Steam's which are binary recommend/not recommend) but I shall resist it, merely only noting how awful this is in comparison to other BS that is pulled in other works. To close to real? Quite possibly but also an affront to the very sub-genre.

Mayhaps the LN version does not have it but once released, it can not be forgotten nor really forgiven. I've got my works with psycho- and sociopaths doing their stuff but this is not one of them. <<less

The crown prince (ex-fiancee) is so s*upid and annoying. Tsk. It is better for them to be run over by the other kingdom if he is an idiot. Plus the girl who became the new fiancee is dumb too. Lol. MC was a spoiled brat at the previous chapter. E. I did not gave a rating, for now.

Look, it's fine and all, kinda cute. But MC is too immature and I didn't feel like she learned from her mistakes. I liked the ML tho, he's actually a great (and poor) guy, wished he could have had someone nicer to him.

Spoiler

Not sayings she isn't nice to him, she is, is just that is kinda stalker/creepy, she just seems obsessed not in love. I LOVE age gap, but in this novel the 'woman' is just too young and act younger than she actually is
